On TV: Modern Family

"Unconventional" family units are the most reliable hallmark of the modern sitcom, like it or not. I Love Lucy's interracial marriage led to the single-parent bliss of My Three Sons, which beget The Brady Bunch's sprawling step-family, which led to the tense divorce situation of One Day at a Time, which went on to nearly kill us with that horrible dead parents show On Our Own. My Three Sons: Tune In to a Live Cast Reunion -- Today!

For fans of classic television, there's a unique opportunity for you to listen to, and perhaps even talk to, three members of the Douglas family from My Three Sons!

The beloved sitcom initially revolved around widower Steve Douglas (Fred MacMurray) and his three boys; Mike (Tim Considine), Robbie (Don Grady), and Chip (Stanley Livingston). They were all kept in line by grumpy Uncle Bub (William Frawley), the boy's maternal grandfather.

Bub eventually moves to Ireland because Frawley was supposedly too ill to be insured and had to be let go. Thankfully, Bub's brother Charley (William Demarest) steps in to take his place.

Around the same time, Mike gets married and moves away. Soonafter, Steve adopts Chip's young orphan friend, Ernie (Barry Livingston), and there were three sons in the house (and opening credits) once again.

My Three Sons ran for an amazing 380 episodes and 12 seasons. It's also one »

Producer David Foster has optioned two unproduced screenplays Fancy Hardware and Ghost of a Chance and a treatment After Paris by A.J. Carothers, the late writer responsible for TV's My Three Sons, and films Never a Dull Moment and The Secret of My Success.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Foster worked with Carothers on the projects decades ago and recently came across the scripts while cleaning out his office. Carothers died in 2007.

Fancy Hardware concerns a womanizing salesman in the 1930s. In 1972, Foster pulled together Steve McQueen, Ali MacGraw and director Alan J. Pakula to do the film for First Artists, but it fell apart.

The mystery romance Ghost of a Chance involves a young girl with a memorabilia shop who attends an old movie queen's auction, only to encounter the ghost of the woman's dead boyfriend. After Paris follows an American private eye in the City of Lights who »
