Trivia:
The original Japanese film's climactic monster invasion was filmed around, and set in, Fukuoka, the largest city on Japan's southernmost island of Kyushu. However, the American version relocated the action in the dubbing to another city in Kyushu, Sasebo, perhaps concerned that their dubbing actors would sorely mispronounce the word "Fukuoka" at inappropriate moments. moreGoofs:
Continuity: When Shigeru and Kashiwagi are in the helicopter searching for Rodan, Kashiwagi is wearing a tie and his head isn't bandaged, but when they go to see the planes bombard Rodan's lair Kashiwagi is no longer wearing a tie and the bandage mysteriously reappears. However, the scene of Kashiwagi and Shigeru in the helicopter was actually from later in the picture and was rearranged by the producers of the American version so that it would make it look as if they were starting the search. moreFAQ

Seismic activity in a Japanese diamond mine unleashes terrors that the miners couldn't have been anticipating. Some of them begin disappearing, and the culprits turn out to be very big, ugly "dragonfly nymphs". But these provide merely a warm-up for the big surprise: a prehistoric pteranodon (dubbed "Rodan" by the scientists on the case) that wreaks the expected havoc.
The movie has a good look and is quite colorful. The special effects are variable, but are always fun nonetheless. The music by Akira Ifukube is beautiful and a real pleasure to listen to. A stolid cast likewise impresses; Kenji Sahara as the likable Shigeru and Akihiko Hirata as the efficient Professor Kashiwagi stand out. Director Ishiro Honda delivers fine suspense as well as good shock moments when the creatures make their entrance. Still, the movie is slow and talky for a while until a slam-bang climax. Then it becomes genuinely exciting, with many effective scenes of total destruction.
Rodan is an enjoyable, pretty fierce creature. It may not be as iconic as Godzilla, but is a fine addition to the canon of Japanese monsters just the same. Overall, the movie is fun to watch.
Paul Frees, Keye Luke, and George Takei supply voices for the English dubbed version.
