James Stewart returned to MGM for 'The Stratton story'. Stewart's underplaying and Sam Wood's direction kept out all the gooey sentiment from the sad story, based on fact by Douglas Morrow and Gary Trosper, about a baseball star who loses his leg after a hunting accident and how he overcomes the tragedy.
Along with Stewart was June Allyson, Frank Morgan, Agnes Moorehead and Bill Williams were in this Jack Cummings production which was well reviewed and a big moneymaker, especially in the U.S, well baseball is their sport. Van Johnson and Gregory Peck were considered for the role of Monty Stratton, thank God they picked Jimmy, his average man of the day, someone you sympathise with persona worked like magic.
