5.0 out of 5 stars The series is hilarious. Highly recommended., 5 Nov 2000
By polona.stanek@siol.net (Ljubljana, Slovenia) - See all my reviews
It is a gem, based on the novel Tom Jones by Henry Fielding, picaresque journey of a foundling who is good and honest by nature but inexperienced and due to this fact forced to sin by concatenation of circumstances. He often inadvertently ends up in bed with women, for example, although he wants to be faithful to his beloved Sophia. Because of foul scheme by his half-brother Blifil Tom is forced to leave the home of his guardian and has to go trough many ordeals before the truth of his origin and stainless character is revealed. The novel is brought to the screen perfectly. The story is told by omniscient narrator and lacks no comical elements. According to ideas of the age of enlightenment the rational and prudent person is also kind and just, which holds good mostly for the middle classes. Especially wicked an without morals is, of course, the aristocracy. If you want to have a good laugh, the simplest solution is this series. It is hilarious. The performance of Brian Blessed in a role of Sophia's father, irritable uneducated squire without manners, matchmaking for his daughter with help of his cunning sister, is unforgettable. Highly recommended.
