'New Moon' Nearly Gets Blind Sided In The Sunday Box Office Report
11 hours ago
1. "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" ($42.5 million)
2. "The Blind Side" ($40.1 million)
3. "2012" ($18 million)
4. "Old Dogs" ($16.8 million)
5. "A Christmas Carol" ($16 million)
The Thanksgiving holiday weekend proved a favorable occasion for vampire enthusiasts and family drama lovers alike as "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" and "The Blind Side" emerged in the top two seats at the box office by Sunday's conclusion.
"New Moon" may have shattered records left and right during its opening weekend, but the much-buzzed Sandra Bullock starring "The Blind Side" did quite well for itself under the gargantuan shadow of the "Twilight" crowd. One weekend later, the two films are performing almost equally as "New Moon" finished the weekend with $42.5 million and "The Blind Side" roped in $40.1 million.
While "The Blind Side" was unable to fully dethrone "New Moon" — even though it did steal the first place seat on Thanksgiving day — the heartwarming tale overcame Roland Emmerich's big budget disaster flick, »

'New Moon' Roundhouses 'Ninja Assassin' In The Saturday Box Office Report
28 November 2009 2:15 PM, PST
1. "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" ($17.9 million)
2. "The Blind Side" ($16.2 million)
3. "2012" ($7.1 million)
4. "Old Dogs" ($6.9 million)
5. "Ninja Assassin" ($5.7 million)
It was always my understanding that ninja were so fearsome that no foe or monster — vampires included — could withstand their stealthy skills, but my preconceived notions have been dashed by the box office debut of "Ninja Assassin," the WB's latest action epic produced by the Wachowski siblings.
Despite all the ninja goodness promised by the film's premise, "Ninja Assassin" couldn't topple the supernatural romantic powerhouse that is "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," which remained the decisive victor at yesterday's box office. Instead, "Ninja Assassin" face-planted in the company of "New Moon" and its competitors — which is not an unprecedented move for ninja, mind you — by landing in fifth place with a mere $5.7 million, bringing the film's cumulative total to $13.5 million since Wednesday.

Thanksgiving Turkeys, 'Ninja Assassin' And The Pixies In Today's Twitter-Wood
25 November 2009 5:02 PM, PST
Thanksgiving is a time for giving and making sacrifices, even if you're Jason Reitman and that means giving up your first class seats on a flight for the turkeys being pardoned by President Obama tomorrow. The "Juno" director tweeted a pic today from his travels, leading a pack of other photo posts that included John Hodgman's view from a Pixies concert last night and Denise Richards showing what she looks like while getting her hair highlighted.
Scope those out after the jump along with a discussion about the title of "Ninja Assassin" by Edgar Wright and Bryan Lee O'Malley, Eliza Dushku "World of Warcraft" nerdery on display and more. It's all in the Thanksgiving Eve Twitter-Wood report for November 25, 2009.

'Star Wars: In Concert' Is All A Fan Could Hope For
25 November 2009 12:00 PM, PST
I don't know if many have gotten to check it out, but "Star Wars" has been on tour in recent weeks. Really, "Star Wars": In Concert, a nationwide (plus Canada) series of concerts celebrating composer John Williams' magnificent score for the six movies in George Lucas's long-running sci-fi franchise.
I was fortunate enough to check out last weekend's show at Nassau Coliseum, on Long Island. It was a jarring day actually, as I caught a 10am screening of "New Moon" that morning -- a Packed house, I might add -- before jumping on a Long Island Railroad train out to the show. I wasn't sure what to expect, having only read that (1) a symphony orchestra was involved, (2) clips from the movies were involved and, most excitingly, (3) Anthony Daniels -- who played C-3Po in every movie -- was serving as some sort of master of ceremonies. Here's What You Need To Know About 'Ninja Assassin'
25 November 2009 11:30 AM, PST
From MTV.Com: "Ninja Assassin" starts off with one of the coolest and most gruesomely entertaining movie scenes of the year: a claustrophobic attack from some masked killers who slice, dice and decapitate their way through some unlucky gangsters, spraying blood around the room like they're firefighters trying to extinguish a four-alarmer.
From there, director James McTeigue ("V for Vendetta") and his star Rain take us on a global treasure hunt in which the nominal goal is vengeance but whose real aim is to kill as many people in as insane a fashion as possible. Run-and-slash sword fights on a busy highway! Armed-soldier-vs.-ninja melees! Spooky, flashlight-assisted battles that leave you hoping never to run into a ninja in a dark alley. The film barrels into theaters on Wednesday (November 25), and here are five things you should know before checking it out:

'Ninja Assassin' Is Out On Friday, So Let's Hear From Chuck Norris On His Favorites In Martial Arts Film
25 November 2009 11:00 AM, PST
"Ninja Assassin" is only the latest in a long line of fine martial arts films. Chuck Norris knows a thing or two about this. And if you don't know why, he'll punch you back into one of the decades when his contributions to martial arts cinema were still young. Because you don't mess with Chuck Norris.
What you do with him is ask what his favorites in martial arts film are. And then you don't dare disagree with him. Because he's Chuck f--king Norris, and he won't stand for that guff.

Who We're Thankful For In 2009: Sam Rockwell
25 November 2009 10:30 AM, PST
From MTV.Com: Was there a more inventive performance in 2009 than Sam Rockwell's in "Moon"? Or, we should say, the performances of the many, many Sam Rockwells who show up in this sci-fi mind-bender about outer space, isolation and technology? The actor took a risk with first-time director Duncan Jones and the gamble paid off big time: The movie was one of the coolest of the year and Rockwell has rightly been mentioned as a potential Oscar candidate.
So MTV News must express our gratitude during this week in which we are giving thanks to the best films and brightest performances of the year. But when it comes to Rockwell, we're also thankful for a movie we haven't seen yet: "Iron Man 2," which he filmed this year and will arrive in theaters in 2010. In a recent chat, Rockwell looked back at "Moon," forward at "Iron Man" and with »

Exclusive: A Big Batch Of Images From 'The Art Of Tim Burton'
25 November 2009 10:00 AM, PST
As you regular readers know, a Tim Burton career retrospective recently kicked off at New York City's Museum of Modern Art, an exhibit which will be running until late April of next year. It's perfect timing then for Steeles Publishing to release their beautiful coffee table book, "The Art of Tim Burton." I recently had the opportunity to thumb through this thing, and it's gorgeous. Both the way it is designed and the quality of the images contained within. We've managed to get a bunch of those pics to share with you, exclusively on MTV Movies Blog. Negative 'New Moon' Reviews Won't Rattle Director Chris Weitz
25 November 2009 9:30 AM, PST
From MTV.Com: What do you do after traipsing around the world for two weeks promoting a film, especially one that soared to a $285 million worldwide opening weekend? One might assume that you take a long, long nap. Not "New Moon" director Chris Weitz, who sat down for one more interview to discuss his fears about the release and his reaction to negative reviews.
"Nothing surprises me in terms of reviews," Weitz told Entertainment Weekly. "Having been a reviewer myself, there are only two ways to spin this story. You can either be the one guy who says this is a great movie, or more likely, take a more jaundiced view of the whole thing. And given the media blitz that has accompanied 'New Moon,' it's rather unsurprising. I do wish there was more appreciation for cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe. I think he's a genius, and I think he made something beautiful. »

'American Ninja' Leaves Us Thankful For Awesome In Today's Sick Day Stash
25 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST
Call them "cult classics." "Guilty pleasures." "Comfort movies." We all have a mental rolodex of flicks that may not be terribly popular but, for one reason or another, they resonate in a very special way. Maybe you saw it at the right moment. Maybe you just see gold where everyone else sees feces. Whatever the case, these are the special favorites that you keep stashed away for sick days. Here are some of ours.
With "Ninja Assassin" hitting theaters this week, it seemed the perfect time to put the spotlight on one my favorite masterpiece of sick-day cinema: 1985's "American Ninja."
Directed by Sam Firstenberg and starring Michael Dudikoff, Steve James ("I'm Gonna Git You Sucka") and veteran '80s ninja movie star Tadashi Yamashita, "American Ninja" was on such a heavy rotation during my childhood that I wore out several copies of the film on VHS. While it spawned at least three sequels, »

Ryan Reynolds, The Actor We Are Most Thankful For In 2009
25 November 2009 8:30 AM, PST
From MTV.Com: Ryan Reynolds might want to quit while he's ahead. How else can the man top 2009, when he starred in two of the 10 highest-grossing movies of the year ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and "The Proposal"), as well as the critically lauded indie "Adventureland"?
Then again, the 33-year-old can't go into hiding anytime soon. This year, he signed on to two big-budget franchise flicks, "Deadpool" and "Green Lantern." Lucky for him, fanboys couldn't be more excited to see his takes on both iconic comic book characters. As Thanksgiving approaches and we dole out gratitude to our favorite actors and filmmakers of the year, MTV News is delighted to dub Ryan Reynolds as the guy we're most thankful for in 2009.
In an exclusive chat, the man himself discussed reworking an iconic comic book character in "Wolverine," making the biggest rom-com in history with "Proposal," and what the future is going to »

'New Moon' Weekend Two Projections, And What That Means For 'Eclipse' And Beyond
25 November 2009 8:00 AM, PST
Earlier this week, I considered the absence of female-oriented blockbuster fare in today's Hollywood. The staggering weekend success of "New Moon" and the "Twilight" phenomenon overall both point to the value in catering event films to a wider market of viewers. It's a point driven home by the fact that James Cameron's "Titanic" still owns the number one spot on the list of top-grossing domestic box office performers now, more than 12 years after its release.
Clearly, a mix of action and romance works wonders for building a crossover audience. The first "Twilight" film was more than a modest success with its $70 million opening weekend, but "New Moon" doubled that figure. It leaves me wondering what we can expect for the franchise moving forward, and how "New Moon"'s second week numbers might inform our understanding of the possibilities. Not content to wait, I got in touch with Jeff Bock, »

'Breaking Dawn' And What The 'Twilight' Stars Want
25 November 2009 7:30 AM, PST
From MTV.Com: With the box-office success of "New Moon" and fans eagerly anticipating the June release of "Eclipse," it looks almost certain that "Breaking Dawn," the final book in the "Twilight Saga," will hit the big screen. But there are two big questions surrounding the potential film: Who will direct it, and will it be split into two movies?
MTV News spoke with the "Twilight" stars last week at a New York screening of "New Moon" and asked them to weigh in on the saga's future.

Woody Allen Plays A Tune For 'Superbad' Director Greg Mottola In Today's Daily TwitPic
25 November 2009 7:00 AM, PST
I'm a fan of Greg Mottola. I'll never forgive him for moving the setting of this year's "Adventureland" away from my childhood home of Long Island, but he's a fellow Islander and I just can't stay mad at him. Plus, Mottola can bring the funny like few others can. "Superbad" is laugh-out-loud hilarious and "Adventureland," despite its shortcomings, manages to strike a fine balance between the crass hilarity of its predecessor and the more gentle trappings of a teenage love story. Plus, "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart is central to the story.
Mottola is also a fan of jazz, as this morning's Daily TwitPic illustrates. While out the other night in New York City, he caught a performance from no less a personality than Woody Allen, accomplished filmmaker and notable jazzhound. After the jump, you'll find the picture that proves it.

'V' Episode 1.04 Recap: 'It's Only The Beginning'
25 November 2009 6:00 AM, PST
Episode Title: "It's Only The Beginning"
Written By: Cameron Litvack & Angela Russo-Otstot
Synopsis: FBI Agent Erica Evans (Elizabeth Mitchell), Father Jack Landry (Joel Gretsch), secret Visitor Ryan Nichols (Morris Chestnut) and the trigger-happy Georgie (David Richmond-Peck) set forth on their first mission as a rudimentary resistance upon learning that the Visitors' plan to institute revolutionary healing techniques secretly spells disaster for humanity. Unbeknownst to Erica, her son Tyler (Logan Huffman) is being seduced by Lisa (Laura Vandervoort) and her mother Anna (Morena Baccarin), leader of the V's, for a still murky plot. Elsewhere, Chad Decker (Scott Wolf) and Ryan's girlfriend Valerie (Lourdes Benedicto) get shocking medical news, while the Visitors' premiere medical officer Joshua (Mark Hildreth) is forced to commit an unspeakable atrocity towards an ally.

'Funny People' Takes The Stage, Tom Hanks Finds His 'Demons' And More, In The DVD Report For Nov. 24
24 November 2009 4:00 PM, PST
It's hard to believe, but Judd Apatow, the mega-filmmaker who has changed the face of Hollywood comedy, has only directed three films. Having made his mark in television ("Freaks & Geeks," "Larry Sanders") and some screenwriting, Apatow finally exploded into the theatrical world on the back of 2005's "The 40 Year Old Virgin." "Knocked Up" would follow in 2007, and then in 2009, "Funny People," a decidedly more mature comedy that straddled serious dramatic elements. Now arriving on DVD and Blu-ray, will the pic -- which stars Adam Sandler as a dying comedian who mentors younger upstart Seth Rogen -- finally grab a wider fanbase than it found in cinemas?
"Funny People" features a strong audio and video transfer, and comes in both theatrical and unrated versions. Extras are plentiful as well, with the two-disc edition featuring filmmaker commentary, on-set diaries, gag reels, deleted and extended scenes, featurettes on subjects like stand-up, vintage prank »

An Official 'Breaking Dawn' Announcement Is Looming...
24 November 2009 3:30 PM, PST
The signs, it would seem, are everywhere. It might just be the worst-kept secret in all of Hollywood. So, why hasn't the "Breaking Dawn" movie been announced yet?
For starters, according to the Hollywood Reporter, Summit Entertainment just announced a television deal with FX to broadcast four "Twilight" films. Rob Pattinson told us that the movie might be filmed in Portland. Ryan Seacrest's radio show recently furthered the rumor (heard from a Summit exec's wife at a nail salon, mind you) that the final "Twilight" book was being split into two movies. And then there's the fact that it would be preposterous that an opening of $143 million in could be ignored and everyone would just release "Eclipse" and call it a day.

'Avatar,' Woody Allen And A Tweet From Prison In Today's Twitter-Wood
24 November 2009 3:00 PM, PST
If you read Twitter-Wood for the pictures, you picked a good day to stop by, because I've got a veritable Twitter slideshow set up for you today, starting with a Woody Allen jazz performance and including but not limited to Emmy Rossum in a turkey hat and Shakira hobnobbing with Larry King.
You may or may not have known that "Pulp Fiction" writer Roger Avary was currently serving time at Ventura County Jail in California. His tweets from inside recently came to my attention, such today's where he introduces a new neighbor. Check those posts out after the jump along with Richard Kelly's question about "Avatar," Dane Cook's problem with Adam Lambert and Michael Showalter's feelings about "Bad Lieutenant." It's all in the Twitter Report for November 24, 2009.

Val Kilmer On 50 Cent: 'I'm A Criminal... And He's My Friend'
24 November 2009 2:30 PM, PST
From MTV.Com: 50 Cent is a busy man — he just released a new album, Before I Self Destruct, and film of the same name, and he's working on several other movies in various stages of development. He's also an unpredictable man — as evidenced by his double-take-inducing appearance at last week's "New Moon" premiere. So, it makes sense that the rapper/actor/mogul would show up at the American Music Awards with Val Kilmer as his "date," eager to tell everyone that he's even busier and more unpredictable than they think.
"It's exciting," he said of the 2009 AMAs, walking down the red carpet alongside a grinning Kilmer, who could best be described as being dressed like Truman Capote's evil twin. "We came out here to enjoy the festivities. Val and I are going to sit and see what's going on. Are you wondering why we're together?"

James Franco Makes Out With Kirsten Storms On 'General Hospital' -- 11/24 Recap
24 November 2009 2:00 PM, PST
Okay... several things are going on right now, so let's get right to the break down.
Maxie and James Franco do a flirty dance of words in his studio, where he tells lie after lie and suddenly she grows a brain and believes none of it. Maxie kind of "gets" Franco's creepy facade, and is even turned on by it. There's more kinky blindfold action, and then there's action of a different sort. You know, the kind that will cause Spinelli's heart to break into a million shards like the glass Maxie dramatically throws to the floor.
Elsewhere, Lucky questions all the mob-related fellows in Port Charles. He starts in prison with Anthony Zacchara, and Anthony learns of his failed hit on Sonny, as well as Joey's death. Wah wah. Then, Lucky moves on to Sonny, who is surprised that Joey's body was posed at the crime scene. Finally, Lucky »
