Sundance Photo/Trailer Preview: Obselidia
35 minutes ago
Director/screenwriter Diane Bell's Obselidia is one of 16 films selected from 1,058 submissions for the Dramatic Competition for the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. Described as a "save-the-world love story", the film tells the story of a lonely librarian believes love is obsolete until a road trip to Death Valley with a beguiling cinema projectionist teaches him otherwise. Shot on the Red Camera, featuring a score by UK musician Liam Howe (Spin Spin Sugar, 6 Underground) and starring a mostly unknown cast Gaynor Howe (Home and Away), Michael Piccirilli, and Frank Hoyt Taylor. Sundance calls the film "soft spoken, profound, and disarmingly charming" offering a "rare and humane lens through which we can view a world increasingly preoccupied with and inhabited by extinction." A few more photos, trailer and poster, after the jump. This Week In Trailers: Violent Blue, Tony, Snabba Cash, Portrait of a Zombie, The Ghost (Domovoy)
Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Violent Blue Trailer Consider this my Christmas present to all of you. A lot of times I present movies that appeal to me on some level and try to explain, »

No word on if Pavic will be making his prints available for public purchase, but you can view some of the art in the series, after the jump. /Film UK - Future Gangs, a Serial Killer, Amy Adams, Danny Wallace and It’s a Wonderful Afterlife
10 hours ago
Coming to you weekly from my vantage point in good old Blighty, it’s Slashfilm UK. Anglos and Anglophiles rejoice as every Friday I’ll be bringing you a round up of news, links and coverage specific to the motion picture comings and goings here in the UK. Sometimes we’ll be talking about films that have already played in the Us, other times it will be films that won’t make it to the Us for a good while yet, and from time to time you’ll read about films that will never make it to the Us at all. This is going to be a short one because, well, it's that time of year and I'm sure /Film UK isn't particularly high on anybody's list of priorities. A promise is a promise though, and last week I said there would be an installment on Xmas day, so there is. »

Watch This: Skhizein, an Incredible Animated Short Film
21 hours ago
I was browsing Reddit this morning when I came across the following description for the short film Skhizein: After being struck by a 150-ton meteorite, Henry has to adapt to living precisely 91 centimeters from himself. That description didn't make much sense to me, but, finding myself incredibly intrigued, I watched the 13-minute short and was completely blown away. From the concept to execution, this short film is beautiful, haunting, and thought-provoking. I would talk more about the premise, but it's conveyed amazingly well through the film itself, so your best bet is to just watch. Hit the jump to watch Skhizein and for some of my brief thoughts on it. Skhizein tore up the festival circuit back in 2008, where it won dozens of nominations and awards. Regrettably I didn't catch it back then, but thanks to the magic of Vimeo, all of us have the opportunity to enjoy it now. »

Are you a fan of the movie Home Alone? /Film reader Tom H sent along word that you can now follow the McCallister family as they fly off to Paris and discover they left their son Kevin at home, alone. The Home Alone Twitter project follows the characters in real time in an alternative dimension where all of the characters have access to Twitter accounts in the 21st century. People who are interested can follow 22 different characters or just watch the the twitter-list to see how they interact, chat to each other and tweet their thoughts and feelings. You might also want to check out some of the individual twitter accounts, which are all pretty elaborately set-up. For example, check out the page for Buzz McCallister. Kevin McCallister just sent out a twitpic showing a photo of van in the driveway of his neighbors house, but he "thought the Murphys »

Sundance Photo Preview: Blue Valentine, Starring Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling
24 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST
Derek Cianfrance's directorial debut Blue Valentine will premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival as one of 16 films selected from 1,058 submissions for the dramatic competition. Written by Derek Cianfrance, Cami Delavigne and Joey Curtis, the screenplay won the 2006 Chrysler Film Project contest, which came with $1 million of funding. The story is about "love lost and love found told in two parallel moments in time." Described as "an intimate, shattering portrait of a disintegrating marriage", Blue Valentine is about a couple who use one night to try and save their failing marriage. Here is more information from the official Sundance description: On the far side of a once-passionate romance, Cindy (Michelle Williams) and Dean (Ryan Gosling) are married with a young daughter. Cool Stuff: Olly Moss’ Lost T-Shirt
24 December 2009 8:00 AM, PST
The DamonCarltonAndAPolarBear.com Lost-Inspired art viral has come to an end, but that doesn't mean that the goodies are completely gone. You might remember that one of the 16 Lost-inspired posters was created by 21-year old UK artist Olly Moss. We've featured Moss many times on the site in the past, and is probably best known for his popular t-shirt designs which have spread across the interwebs (the Spoilers t-shirt and a series of retro movie poster remakes that we previously featured in Cool Stuff, and Shoot The Baddies). Olly Moss's Saul Bass inspired poster for the character of Locke is titled "Locke's Secret" which featured the subtitle "Just Don't Tell Him What He Can't Do..." sold out in record time. Gallery 1988 has printed some t-shirts featuring the design. The bad news is that you can only buy it in person at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles on 7020 Melrose Avenue. »

First Look: Nicolas Cage in The Hungry Rabbit Jumps
24 December 2009 6:00 AM, PST
Janice Wong caught a photo of Nicolas Cage filming a scene for his new film The Hungry Rabbit Jumps. The dramatic thriller tells the story of "a man whose wife is the victim of a brutal crime" and "subsequently becomes entangled with an underground vigilante organization." Roger Donaldson (Thirteen Days, The Bounty, The Bank Job) is directing, while January Jones and Guy Pearce co-star. Here is a note from Wong: On the day I was finally going to go to Blaine Kern's Mardi Gras World, I hopped on the free ferry to Algiers on a whim. When I found out that the Mardi Gras World there had been shut down and moved to the other side of the water yrs back, I had half an hour to kill til the ferry could take me back. Wandering around, I stumbled onto a movie shoot with Nicholas Cage Bahahahahahaha! I spoke to »

Kevin Smith Discusses Why Cop Out Replaced A Couple of Dicks
24 December 2009 12:11 AM, PST
We just recently covered the first trailer for Kevin Smith's latest film, Cop Out --- a film whose original title, A Couple of Dicks, was gathering similar controversy to Smith's previous Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Fans pushed hard for Smith to stick with the title since it was announced, but we always knew that the studio could change their minds at any point. We even knew about the safer placeholder title, A Couple of Cops, which was to serve as a last resort if they couldn't sell the film with otherwise. But instead of that bland filler title, we got the ironic Cop Out. And now we finally know how, exactly, Smith decided on the title. Speaking to the EW Hollywood Insider blog, Smith said that Warner Brothers ran the title by the big three television networks, ABC, NBC, and CBS, and the response wasn't exactly what they wanted. »

Toy Story 3: High Definition Clip and 29 High Resolution Photos
24 December 2009 12:11 AM, PST
Earlier this week, Disney aired a short clip from Pixar's upcoming film Toy Story 3, and we shared a low quality version online. Disney has just sent us links to the High Definition digital file of the clip, which you will find linked/embedded after the jump. If you haven't seen it yet, you need to. And if you have seen the clip: trust me, you haven't really seen anything until you've watched the clip it in high def. Along with the clip, I've included a gallery of 29 high resolution screen-captures -- many of which would make for good computer desktop wallpaper. If you're a Pixar fanatic like me, then you will certainly appreciate all the small little details. For example, look at the pencil markings on the door in the picture above. And it seems like Pixar has really outdone themselves with Andy's room, which since the last time »

Kevin Smith’s Cop Out Movie Trailer: These Guys Really Are a Couple of Dicks
23 December 2009 6:18 PM, PST
This week, there will be no news, only trailers! Kevin Smith has always written his own movies, until now. When he signed on to direct A Couple of Dicks, for Warner Bros., eventually retitled Cop Out, the project was an interesting move, if nothing else. Could Smith work purely as a director for hire and channel the energy of Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan into something that might resemble a film he'd make on his own? The just-released trailer isn't making much of an argument for 'yes'. Check it out after the break. This is one unfunny trailer. The "smarter than Batman" line got a giggle, and...yeah. That's about it. Though not generally a fan of Smith's I liked Zack and Miri and was hoping this might end up being a turning point for the director. But what I see here looks like a bad in-character 30 Rock sketch where »

Have Disney Canned Their Philip K. Dick Adaptation, King of the Elves?
23 December 2009 5:32 PM, PST
There's absolutely no official confirmation of this yet, but several rumours and a clear change to an official website suggest that Disney have ditched their long in the works adaptation of Philip K. Dick's short story, King of the Elves. The film was being directed by Aaron Blaise and Robert Walker. When I was out at the animation studios in Burbank earlier this month there was a lot of great-looking Elves artwork dotted about the place. What looked like CG tests for the elf characters showed a great deal of detail and texture, more akin to something like Avatar than a more stylised Pixar picture. As the only images I saw of human characters were sketches or hand drawn concept art I'm not sure what the ultimate aesthetic plan actually added up to. Interesting note: you can see from the storyboard sketch above that this would have been another »

Sundance Photo Preview: High school
23 December 2009 3:00 PM, PST
John Stalberg's feature directorial debut High school will premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival in the Park City at Midnight category. Many people are comparing the film to The Wackness, another pot dramedy that played Sundance a couple years back. Michael Chiklis plays a smarmy high school principal who suddenly institutes a zero-tolerance crusade, introducing mandatory drug tests for all students. Failure of which will result in immediate expulsion. Matt Bush plays a straight-arrow valedictorian named Henry Burke who normally would have nothing to worry about, except he just tried marijuana for the very first time. I'll let the Sundance description take over: With his college scholarship hanging in the balance, Burke begrudgingly teams up with charismatic pothead Travis Breaux to do the only thing they can think of to neutralize this threat—get the entire student body stoned. In his debut feature, director/cowriter John Stalberg Jr. percolates »

Rumor: Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood, Terminator 2 and Star Wars Going 3D?
23 December 2009 3:00 PM, PST
We've heard rumors before that George Lucas is working up a 3D version of the original Star Wars films, and those rumors are back again. This time, though, they've brought some friends - new rumors of Terminator 2 getting dimensionalised, and a claim that Ridley Scott is "breathing down the neck of executives at Universal to get them to approve making a 3D version of his new $200 million epic, Robin Hood". Studio Canal owns the rights to Terminator 2 and it's reportedly their plan to have a re-release in 3D. Is that good idea? Well, maybe. It all depends on two factors, I believe: how hungry the exhibitors are for 3D material, and how quickly home 3D systems are adopted. If there's a 3D T2 but nowhere to screen it, because everybody is still 'flat' at home and the 3D screens are filled with new pictures, then it won't matter »

Battle: Los Angeles Set Photos
23 December 2009 2:12 PM, PST
A batch of photos from the Louisiana set of Jonathan Liebesman's Battle: Los Angeles have been discovered online. The photo features Aaron Eckhart as a Marine staff sergeant, and was taken on base in Camp Horno in the 53 area of Camp Pendleton on December 17th 2009 by Jonathan Hoffon. For those of you who don't know, Battle: La is an alien invasion story, which is presented as an intense real-time war movie from the perspective of a group of Marines. It has been described by some as "Blackhawk Down" meets "Independence Day". See more from these photos after the jump. The photo below was taken by manwithscaryspouse (via io9), who said that the "Mushroom cloud of fire" was caused by a bus explosion. The sequence was shot in Shrevesport, La (the other L.A.) in September, before production switched to "more pyrotechnics in Baton Rouge neighborhoods in October, including areas »
