Cop Out Trailer Is Here!

23 December 2009 11:06 PM, PST

It's the moment lots of you have been waiting for: the first proper look at Kevin Smith's new film, Cop Out, starring Bruce Willis and 30 Rock's Tracy Morgan.Formerly known as A Couple Of Dicks (stupid Us TV networks and their advertising rules), the movie follows a pair of NYPD 'tecs as they get tangled up with mobsters, a stolen baseball card and a sexy female witness. Though you'd be hard pressed to guess most of that from this first glance. And how is it? Er… Based on the evidence of the trailer, it would be better off if we referred to it as Studio Produced Cop Comedy Drama 6179. There are some slick titles, a fast-cut montage of scenes that show Willis and Morgan bickering (and point up that Sean William Scott and Morgan work better as comedy partners than the leading duo), with the processed feeling of generic comedy. »

Repo Men Trailer Gets Bloody

23 December 2009 12:47 PM, PST

The first trailer for Universal's new sci-fi action thriller Repo Men has arrived online and you can see it in handy, embedded form below, assuming you're of the correct age (stop laughing). The R-Rated promo means there's plenty of blood, guts, boobs and bad language for a film that feels like the organ donor scene from Monty Python's The Meaning Of Life via Repo! The Genetic Opera, but with 100% less singing. We're in a near future world where human organs can be replaced fairly easily, but the cost of paying for them is crippling. Life-saving procedures require heft credit outlay and when the owners of new hearts/livers/whatever can't anymore, that's when the repo men are called in.Enter Remy and Jake (Jude Law and Forest Whitaker), two of the best in the business. They're happy to trade quips and slice up delinquent organ owners, but things take a »

Taylor Lautner Going On A Vision Quest?

22 December 2009 11:20 PM, PST

Now that he's a hot property outside of the fevered imaginations of Twi-hards thanks to New Moon's success, Taylor Lautner is being liked to a whole swathe of new projects, including this latest one, a remake of 1985's coming of age wrestling drama Vision Quest. The original starred Matthew Modine as a high school wrestling star who falls head over heels in lurve with the slightly older female boarder (Linda Fiorentino) who arrives to stay at his house. His relationship with her ends up interfering with his sporting dreams. Tch… Girls, eh? Always with the interfering with the sporting dreams. This new version is beg spearheaded by producers Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, who have been part of team Twilight since the first movie and who are also developing action thriller Cancun as another possible Lautner vehicle.Perhaps they could also find a place for his current squeeze, singer Taylor Hicks - after all, »

Jeff Smith's Bone Set For The Screen

22 December 2009 11:12 PM, PST

Sherlock Holmes producer Dan Lin has been talking to Collider, as the Baker Street detective gears up for his Boxing Day unleashing. And while several future projects come up for discussion (the live-action / animation Tom and Jerry origin story among them), what's especially caught our attention is word that Jeff Smith's cult comic Bone is well into development. The strange and wonderful graphic series involves Fone Bone, Smiley Bone and Phoney Bone, smooth white creatures exiled from the never-shown Boneville after Phoney's hapless mayoral campaign. Hounded by locusts and rats across the medieval fantasy land of The Valley, they're eventually sucked into a world-saving hero quest against a Dark Lord. And if that synopsis sounds a bit meh, take our word that it does nothing like justice to the impressively sophisticated 1300 page epic, published between 1991 and 2004, which starts out as basically slapstick and gets more and more serious as it goes on. »

Brendan Fraser Suffers Furry Vengeance

22 December 2009 11:10 PM, PST

The first trailer for developers vs animals comedy Furry Vengeance has scampered online for your viewing pleasure. Oh, Brendan Fraser… Really? Has your career truly come to this? A slapstick-laden wannabe laugh riot that sees a driven property magnate planning a new housing subdivision that will wipe out a swathe of Oregon forest. Somewhat naturally (pun entirely intended, so there), the local fauna isn't too thrilled with the idea of losing their home, so some of the critters decide to fight back. Since this is one of those trailers that seems to want to give away the majority of what it considers the "best" jokes and all of the plot, we can assume that Fraser's Neal Lyman is convinced that saving the environment is more important than making money. On a positive - we hope - note, the movie features the work of The Hangover's Ken Jeong and Daily »

Sex & The City 2 Trailer Online

22 December 2009 10:48 PM, PST

In case you were wondering, no that tagline is not a mis-spelling and does not mean the Sex And The City sequel trailer will find Sarah Jessica Parker and co locked up - they're actually off to the desert.Plot details in this first promo are thin on the ground, so there's no actual explanation for why Carrie and the girls are strutting around in the sun, though  we do learn that it's two years later and "things you thought would never happen in a million years" have occured since we last saw them. So it's anyone's guess - Samantha getting hitched? Miranda giving up complaining? Charlotte going postal and taking out 15 people at her local park with an Ak-47? Yeah, probably not the last one, but we just know a lot of you are now hoping that will happen. This definitely looks like one for the fans - take »

Keira Knightley Takes The Talking Cure

22 December 2009 10:47 PM, PST

Talk about your indie cast dream teams: Keira Knightley, Christoph Waltz and Michael Fassbender have all signed on to star in David Cronenberg's adaptation of The Talking Cure.It would appear that Cronenberg has shuffled his cinematic version of Christopher Hampton's play to the top of his active pile after thriller The Matarese Circle died in development when Tom Cruise opted to do something else instead. Now, though, Australian distributor Hopscotch has nabbed the rights to Cure and Cronenberg has lined up his impressive cast for a story that chronicles the fathers of psychoanalysis - that would be Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung - and their complex relationships with a beautiful patient. Bet Keira's playing Freud. It's been a long road for Cronenberg on this one - he's been attached since at least 2007, but now it looks like he'll finally be flying to Europe early next year to kick off shooting. »

Karate Kid Trailer Kicks In

22 December 2009 11:26 AM, PST

Hollywood may be slowly shutting down for its Christmas nap, but the flow of trailers continues with the Karate Kid remake, starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. The new version transplants the story of a lad facing down bullies to China, and re-imagines Daniel-san in the form of Jaden Smith's Dre Parker. When he's attacked by some of the local youths, Dre is saved by Mr Han (Chan), who agrees to tutor him in martial arts. Cue a montage (because, as Team America taught us, every film needs a Montage) of Parker learning to fight back.A lot has been changed around by the looks of it (hopefully enough that we won't be constantly comparing it to the 1984 pic and Pat Morita), but there's still one quick nudge at the original, with Mr Han stopping a fly. Just not in the way you remember.Take a glance and decide »

Knight And Day Trailer Is Here

22 December 2009 9:10 AM, PST

Coming off as a cross between a Mission: Impossible movie and a high concept rom com, the first trailer for Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz' big cinematic reunion, Knight And Day, has arrived on the web.Directed by 3:10 To Yuma/Walk The Line's James Mangold, the film finds former Vanilla Sky co-stars Cruise and Diaz in what the official synopsis suggests is a glamorous and sometimes deadly adventure where nothing and no one – even themselves – are what they seem. Amid shifting alliances and unexpected betrayals, they race across the globe, with their survival ultimately hinging on the battle of truth vs. trust.”On screen, that boils down to the pair meeting when Cruise takes out a plane-load of bad guys and keeps intruding on Diaz's live, to the somewhat shocked reaction of those around her, like pal Marc Blucas. Not everything about the promo works, but Cruise is back to his twinkly, »

Peter Jackson Developing Mortal Engines

21 December 2009 11:35 PM, PST

Wellington's Dominion Post, a newspaper published in the New Zealand home of Peter Jackson's Wingnut Films and the Weta Workshop, has broken the news that Jackson and Weta are working on adaptations of Philip Reeve's Mortal Engines quartet (known as The Hungry City Chronicles in the Us: so let's hope we get to keep the UK titles and there's none of that Golden Compass nonsense).Reeve's series of children's novels takes place in a steampunk post-apocalyptic future where cities are mobile and perambulate the planet devouring each other for fuel: a system amusingly called Municipal Darwinism. The St Paul's Cathedral-topped London is the strongest of these Traction Cities, in a world where "old tech" is extremely sought after. The first novel, Mortal Engines itself, in a very small nutshell, involves an assassination attempt within the Historians Guild; the challenging of apprentice Historian Tom Natsworthy's value system, when he »

Bryan Singer Talks X-Men: First Class

21 December 2009 11:34 PM, PST

Now that he's officially signed to develop and direct the film, Bryan Singer has begun to talk - at least, to drop hints - about mutant prequel pic X-Men: First Class.Chatting with the Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog, Singer admitted that while he couldn't talk specifically about the story (it's still a secret), he could lock down what part of the X-story it would cover. "It’s basically about the formation of the X-Men. How they began and the relationship between a young Xavier and a young Magneto."And since it'll borrow elements from Eric Lensherr's longer life, it's even more likely that the Magneto origin movie will be shoved back on the schedule as Fox concentrates on this. "This story would probably utilize some of the Magneto story because it deals with a young Magneto, so it might supersede that because this would explore that relationship between a »

Elm Street and Friday 13th Updates

21 December 2009 11:23 PM, PST

Readers, do not be concerned. The Nightmare on Elm Street re-shoots are par for the course, and Friday 13th Part 2 3D is still on the Platinum Dunes agenda. You have nothing to fear. Or perhaps everything.Dunes producer Brad Fuller, updating the production company's official blog page, has set out to lower the all the raised eyebrows that followed the announcement of Elm Street reshoots in the wake of its test screenings. "We're doing a couple of days, and everyone seems to be making a big deal out of it," he says, going on to point out that every single Dunes film to date has gone through a similar process. He won't specify what exactly is going before the cameras for the second time, but says "the fans' input has always been valuable, and suffice to say we listened."Meanwhile at Crystal Lake, there's an eerie silence (chi-chi-chi ka-ka-ka...) Bounty Hunter Trailer Arrives

21 December 2009 11:22 PM, PST

Ah, the high concept rom com: throwing attractive people together in wacky situations since the dawn of cinema itself (well, since the 30s at least). And now we have a trailer for the latest incarnation - The Bounty Hunter, starring Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston. How does it look? Much like Fool's Gold, or Hitch, two of director Andy Tenant's previous movies, and again finds two sexy actors bickering, scrapping and generally trying to prove they have chemistry together. On their own, Butler and Aniston have done some good work, but on the evidence of this trailer, we're not yet sure they work as a pair. Butler's contending with a slightly awkward American accent and Aniston appears to be falling back on her usual blend of nervy/cute tics. The basic premise of the promo - which snuck out over the weekend - finds Butler's dogged bounty hunter assigned »

Marmaduke Teaser Online

21 December 2009 11:21 PM, PST

Start filling out your Oscar pool entry for 2011, folks - the first Best Picture contender is officially here. Wait… No, sorry: wrong story. It's the Marmaduke teaser, and it's now on the magical interwebs.Yes, the latest chatty animal film is heading inexorably for us like a giant meteorite, and there's nothing we can do to stop it. If course, this is only a teaser, one that introduces us to the hefty pooch of comic strip legend who now has Owen Wilson voicing him.Like the Chipmunks, it's clearly going to be aimed at the kiddies and there's no way to judge the final film's quality from a teaser. But really…. invoking The Oc? Just go and watch it (it's short) and judge for yourself »

Kick-Ass Red Band Trailer Online

21 December 2009 3:59 PM, PST

Those of a sensitive disposition may want to look away now because a new Kiss-Ass red-band trailer is up online and it majors on Hit Girl, a 12 year-old with the violent tendencies of Oldboy and the potty mouth of Malcolm Tucker. All the rest of you feel free to enjoy a festive treat with Chloe Moretz's kicking, shooting, and kicking so more as she tackles a mass of unsuspecting villainy. Kudos too for finding time to sneak in a cheeky milkshake with her dad and mentor, Nicolas Cage's Big Daddy, amid that welter of feature-rearranging.Based on Mark Millar and John Romita Jr's comic-book series and directed by Matthew Vaughn, Kick-Ass is set in a world populated by ultra-violent and, in the case of Aaron Johnson's wannabe crime fighter Kick-Ass, not-quite-so-ultra-violent vigilantes. As you probably know by now, we're really rather excited by it in this part »

If you've been waiting patiently to learn when you can finally see Edgar Wright's adaptation of cult graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim, here's an early festive treat - the film will arrive on August 28th.The Playlist got hold of an email greeting sent out by Universal, which revealed the release date (the Us date is still in flux, but current thinking points to either the same day or possibly a week earlier).   For those who have let the Pilgrim mania wash past them, there was also a handy primer on the plot of Scott Pilgrim Vs The World included in the message: "Meet charming and jobless Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera). A bass guitarist for totally average garage band Sex Bob-omb, the 22 year-old has just met the girl of his dreams... literally. The only catch to winning Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)? Her seven evil exes are coming to kill him. »

Hawkman Next For Warners?

21 December 2009 10:09 AM, PST

Andy Warhol famously predicted that one day, everyone will get their 15 minutes of fame. If he were alive today, he'd be very confused as to why he's in a coffin, but he'd also announce that every superhero will eventually be turned into a film, especially now that Warners has apparently set its sights on DC's Hawkman. The team over at Pajiba have a source that points to the studio shoving a film based on the be-winged hero into development. It's still a rumour at this point, since Warners has yet to officially announce it, but following the creation of the massive entertainment conglomeration once WB swallowed up DC, it was only a matter of time before all the comics' company's books were thrown into the script pile. Hawkman is one of the decidedly lesser DC heroes, first created for the pages of Flash Comics in 1940 by Gardner Fox and Dennis »

Tony: London Serial Killer Trailer

21 December 2009 8:33 AM, PST

So, serial killing, eh? It's not exactly a gold mine of ever-so-dry, ever-so-witty punchy prose, harmless quips and debonair wordplay, but it does seem to let the likes of Anthony Hopkins deliver Oscar-winning performances, so there's a fine line to tread.Gerard Johnson's macabre, serial-killer thriller then. Played by newcomer Peter Ferdinando, he's called Tony, he's got a fiercesome 'tache and definitely should have gone to Specsavers, and he's got, shall we say, some 'issues'. Check out the trailer for the critically-acclaimed Tony below.Tony is released in cinemas on February 5. »
