The Box review (3/5) - The premise turns out to be amazingly simple.

5 November 2009 9:59 PM, PST

What would you do if you were given the opportunity of receiving a million dollars? Unfortunately there is a catch. Someone you don’t know will die. That is the intriguing premise behind “The Box”, a movie that is both thrilling and baffling. Director/screenwriter Richard Kelly has been waiting a long time to spring another mind trip on people like he did with “Donnie Darko”. That was a movie that became a cult classic after going to video. That was way back in 2001. After that, Kelly wrote the screenplay for the universally panned “Domino” and directed the little seen “Southland Tales”. He was due to bring his furtive mind back to the forefront. What better way to do it than bringing short story “Button, Button” by Richard Matheson to the big screen. Matheson’s previous work includes “A Stir of Echoes”, “I Am Legend”, “What Dreams May Come” and countless “Twilight Zone” episodes. »

The Fourth Kind review (1/5) - Every move it makes is a complete misstep and the audience pays for it.

5 November 2009 9:52 PM, PST

Like any red blooded male, I enjoy a good horror film. A horror flick that brings the chills and offers up a good story is a big plus. Horror films that incorporate laughs can also work as we’ve seen with “Drag Me to Hell” this year. The one thing that can kill horror films is pretentiousness. When directors try to be too clever for their own good, it usually ends in utter failure. “The Fourth Kind” is one such film. Every move it makes is a complete misstep and the audience pays for it with an hour and a half missing from their lives. Ever since “The Blair Witch Project” scored big revenues, other horror films have tried to go the pseudo documentary route to varying degrees of success. “Paranormal Activity” just did it with great results last month. Director Olatunde Osunsanmi presents “The Fourth Kind” as fact based »
