New Eagle of the Ninth Images Will Convince You Channing Tatum is a Roman. Maybe.
Channing Tatum as a Roman Centurion? Okay, let’s face it, “The Eagle of the Ninth” has a lot going against it. For one, Channing Tatum playing something other than a Brooklyn street dancer is a stretch, but as a Roman? He definitely looks the part, what with the hell and body and physicality, but it’s when he opens his mouth, that’s when the problems will start. But hey, maybe Kevin Macdonald (“The Last King of Scotland”) can make it work. Doubtful, but I suppose anything’s possible. Co-starring Jamie Bell, Mark Strong, Donald Sutherland, Denis O’Hare, Douglas Henshall, Paul Ritter, and Ben O’Brien. In 140 Ad, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila (Tatum) arrives from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth. »

USA Network Rules the Basic Cable Roost in 2009
2 hours ago
In the world of basic cable TV, the USA Network is king. The network, thanks to its returning hit “Burn Notice” and new hits “Royal Pains” and “Blue Collar”, topped the competition with the most-watched basic cable viewership for the year. The breezy, easy going net was tops among the heavily sought-after adults 18-49 demo (that’s up 29% from its 2008 numbers), with “Burn Notice” second in total viewers (a whopping 7.19 million) only to TNT’s veteran cop show “The Closer” (queen of the cable nets with 7.75 million), according to 2009 averages. Besides USA, the FX Channel also saw strong numbers for 2009, literally riding original shows like the dramatic powerhouse “Sons of Anarchy” and the comedies “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and newcomer “The League” to higher numbers. Overall, the channel was up 10% from its 2008 numbers. Espn, meanwhile, used the addition of Monday Night Football to give it the second highest »

The Full Nazi Propaganda Film From Inglourious Basterds
2 hours ago
Besides swinging a mighty bat in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds”, Eli Roth also directed the short film “Nations Pride”, the film supervised by Joseph Goebbels and screened for the Nazi elite in a most unfortunate theatre (for the Nazi) in Paris. I’ve got the full Monty here for you from the Blu-Ray and DVD. In it, Pvt. Fredrick Zoller (Daniel Brühl), basically digs in in the worlds most secure tower and picks off American soldiers who apparently did not also have sniper rifles, tanks or feet. Look for the back of Quentin’s head in a cameo at some point in the proceedings. Thanks Cinematical. »

Give ‘em Hell Malone (2009) Movie Review
Russell Mulcahy’s “Give’em Hell Malone” is one of those anachronistic film noir filled with characters more appropriate in ‘40s and ‘50s detective movies featuring heroes with names like Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe. As the film opens, Thomas Jane’s Malone, a private dick with a very big gun that he brandishes expertly, is killing his way through a hotel full of bad guys to get to a metallic case that he has been sent to retrieve. Shot up to hell and back, but still alive, our hero seeks out some answers from his handler Murphy (Leland Orser), eventually discovering that they were both hired by the vivacious lady in red Evelyn (Elsa Pataky). Meanwhile, crime boss Whitmore (Gregory Harrison) dispatches his best enforcer, the brute with a heart of gold Boulder (Ving Rhames) and some other dangerous killers to take back the suitcase by all means necessary. »

A Second Look at Christopher Nolan’s Inception
5 hours ago
We had “Inception” originally pegged as a sci-fi film, but let’s face it, this thing isn’t really all that sci-fi. So, we’re going to start covering it on BeyondHollywood.com more often now as a result. The latest — a brand spanking new trailer for “Inception”, which reveals more of a plot, complete with voiceover narration by Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays a high-tech thief named Cobb in the movie. He’s joined by Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger, Michael Caine, and Lukas Haas. “Inception” tantalizes July 16, 2010. And here’s a fresh poster from the movie released a week or so ago. Looks like Warner Bros. is trying to ape the success of Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” by way of posters. »

The Blackout Poster and Trailer Lurks in the Darkness
5 hours ago
Scared of the dark? You should be. Here’s a quickie trailer and poster for Robert David Sanders’ “in the dark” creature movie “The Blackout”. I’d like to tell you that I don’t want to spoil what is lurking in the darkness and chasing our victims, but, er, the poster sorta already gives that away. Starring Barbara Streifel Sanders, Joseph Dunn, Ian Malcolm, Michael Caruso, Caroline Rich, Anthony Tedesco, James Martinez, John Gorman, Alexis Zibolis, and Ace Gibson. When an apartment building’s lights go out mysteriously, all of the tenants put aside their problems and band together to get to the bottom of the city-wide blackout. Deep in the basement of the high-rise, a hideous breed of monster hatches and begins to wreak havoc. Everyone must find a way to kill the blood-thirsty creatures and survive the darkness before it destroys the world. Synopsis: When an apartment »

Captain America Ready To Roll Without A Cast And Good Green Lantern News
7 hours ago
According to the fine fellas over at Fangoria, principal photography for the as yet un-casted “Captain America” is set to roll in June of 2010. That’s pretty soon. No casting news yet. Will it be Sam Worthington? He’s in everything else. Why not? I’m thinking the good Captain is going to have to be pretty buff so 6 months is going to have to be enough time for someone to get in fighting trim. In other superhero news, the production team is in place for “Green Lantern” starring Ryan Reynolds. These guys are good so I’m hoping the Green won’t be another Wolverine. Thanks /Film for the bullets. Cinematographer Dion Beebe (Memoirs of a Geisha, Chicago, Equilibrium, Collateral) Production designer Grant Major and costume designer Ngila Dickson (Lord of the Rings trilogy) Art director François Audouy (Avatar, I Am Legend, Watchmen, Transformers, the Spider-Man” trilogy) »

Will Taylor Lautner Wrestle His Sweaty Demons In A New Vision Quest?
Millions of screaming teenage girls just might be dying to find out if “Vision Quest” gets the old reboot. “Vision Quest” was a pretty decent 80’s flick where a teenage dude (Mathew Modine) gets educated by a super hot older chick (Linda Fiorentino) while power training for high school wrestling tournaments. Mr.buff Taylor Lautner is apparently the man for this job thanks to producers Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, who worked with Taylor on those shiny vampire movies you might have heard of. No official announcement yet. Stay tuned. Thanks Empire for the rumour mongering. »

The Top 10 Most Pirated Movies of 2009
Regardless of whether or not you agree with the shady practice of downloading pirated movies, torrent sites are probably here to stay. Unless the industry gets its proverbial fecal matter together within the next few years, people aren’t going to buy the cinematic cow when its celluloid milk can be streamed easily from a surprisingly large number of popular websites. According to TorrentFreak, the website which devotes its entire bandwidth to the trends of savvy downloaders across the globe, the following films are the most pirated features of 2009. The list is, for the most part, fairly predictable, though there are a few unexpected contenders sprinkled throughout. Who knew people were that anxious to watch “State of Play?” The mind boggles. In case you were wondering, here’s how the list was calculated: The data for this list is collected by TorrentFreak from several sources, including reports from all the large BitTorrent trackers. »

Is Brad Pitt in Sherlock Holmes After All? Possibly.
28 December 2009 8:58 AM, PST
I have to admit, Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes” was one of my must-see movies. What can I say, I have a man crush on Robert Downey Jr. that’s only rivaled by my crush on Rose Byrne. I haven’t had the chance to see the movie yet, thanks to family who are in town for the holidays, but according to those who have, Moriarty does indeed show up in “Sherlock Holmes”, albeit as only a shadowy figure (unseen face, natch) and an English accent. The guys at Ugo got around to asking Ritchie about Moriarty, and if Pitt was the man behind the accent. Matt Patches: I know there was this big hulabaloo about, Brad Pitt popping up as Moriarty, does he/doesn’t he…and because he plays a pretty big part in the movie, albeit shrouded in shadow, I admit I waited around til after the »

Mister T Pities the Fool that Wants Him to do an A-Team Cameo
28 December 2009 8:39 AM, PST
According to Mister T himself, don’t expect to see a T cameo in Joe Carnahan’s upcoming “A-Team” feature film. Mind you, it’s not about the money, or so the jewel-encrusted one tells Latino Review during a visit to the gym. Yes, Mister T still goes to the gym. What, you think those muscles grow overnight? As to the cameo, Mister T just doesn’t, well, see the point. He said it wasn’t about money, because he turned down the chance to appear in the film before that was even discussed. He said it just wouldn’t be right for him to be in it. If his B.A. isn’t the main guy, then why do it? What’s wrong with the film that they need him to make a cameo? Plus they would market the film with him being in it, and he didn’t »

Repo Men Offers Organ Repossession Without the Operatic Warbling
28 December 2009 6:59 AM, PST
Yes, I am painfully aware that “Repo! The Genetic Opera” has been around in various forms for quite some time, and I’m also aware that its fanbase is somewhat rabid in its devotion to the project. However, I’m not one or them. In fact, “Repo!” was one of the worst genre-related endeavors I experienced in 2009, right next to the remake of “It’s Alive” and Scary Madison’s boring teen slasher “The Shortcut.” In other words, I really couldn’t care less that Miguel Sapochnik’s upcoming organ repossession yarn “Repo Men” shares several similarities with Darren Lynn Bousman’s insufferable gothic codpiece. Besides, don’t they both have Manjula Padmanabhan’s “Harvest” to thank for these borrowed ideas in the first place? Something to think about when you’re unbridled rage is causing your Hot Topic mascara to run down your pudgy cheeks. For the uninitiated, a »

Box Office: Avatar Holds Off Sherlock Holmes, Meryl Streep, and Chipmunk Abominations
27 December 2009 9:11 PM, PST
James Cameron’s “Avatar” is still king of the box office — though just barely. According to studio estimates, the sci-fi actioner that would change the way filmmaking is made for years to come (not to mention the marketing, natch) grossed $75 million in its second week of release, down just 2.6% from its first weekend. That gives the film $212 million in two weeks of release at the domestic box office, and already $615 million worldwide. I think it’s safe to say that the film’s bloated budget (estimated by some to be at the $500 million mark) was well spent. Word of mouth about the film’s wow special effects, it seems, has taken hold of the public. “Avatar’s” $75 million gave it $10 million more than the debut of Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes”, its closest competitor which took in $65 million over a record-breaking weekend for Hollywood. The period action film, a more »
