Deon Taylor Poised to Spread Some Holiday Fear with Dark Christmas
2 hours ago
I'm one of the many out there who were surprised by Deon Taylor's horror anthology Nite Tales (review here). Despite a few technical hiccups and a truly wretched performance from Flava Flav the flick more than did it's thing. We just got word that Taylor's ready to start in on his latest flick -- Dark Christman.
While details are sparse, we do know that the film goes into production on December 15th in Sacramento, California with Taylor once again at the directorial helm. Said to be the latest entry in his Nite Tales franchise, you can expect a formal announcement and some casting news on Dark Christmas as well as more news on Taylor's other projects Dead Tone and Chain Letter sooner rather than later. In the interim, dig on the trailer for Nite Tales below.

DVD Releases: Dec. 1, 2009: Wield a Knife of Ice by the Deadline Set by the Little Red Devil
8 hours ago
A new month; a new batch of DVDs and Blu-rays to consider. We've used the phrase "mixed bag" a few times before this year, but never has it been more apropos than with regard to those discs that are being released on December 1st, 2009!
A new Evil Dead is on its way -- not that anyone can figure out why. Gremlins is hitting Blu-ray as is the new Terminator flick. And the Brittany Murphy-starrer Deadline, which is better than it has any business being, drops along with a few other indies like Deader Country, Poker Run, and Sins of the Father.
Little Red Devil with Daniel Baldwin and Dee Wallace definitely sounds intriguing, but for my money, the hand's down pick of the week is 1972's Knife of Ice, a rare Italian giallo from Umberto Lenzi starring the gorgeous and glamorous Carroll Baker.
Happy shopping!

First Playdates for Sam Raimi's Evil Dead Re-release
8 hours ago
More often than not, I really wish I'd been born earlier and had the opportunity to see horror classics like The Evil Dead on the big screen. Sure, Blu-ray is great and 1080p projectors excel at replicating the theatrical experience, but they miss the mark. It's just that nothing really compares to seeing this stuff on the big screen with a packed audience of like-minded horror fans. But thanks to Grindhouse Releasing, I'll soon be able to cross another one off my wish list.
Landmark Theatres will present director Sam Raimi's 35mm print of Evil Dead at special midnight shows in Minneapolis, Denver, Seattle, New York, Houston, Dallas, and Los Angeles in the first quarter of 2010. If the film isn't scheduled for release in your area, don't fret, more dates are coming!

* January 15-16: Esquire Theatre, Denver (Official Site)

Deaden Comic Book to Pick Up Where the Film Ended
8 hours ago
2006's Deaden (review here) was a bloody, nasty throwback to the 70s and 80s vigilante flicks, and those of us that dug it can look forward to an expansion of the story ... in printed form.
According to Deaden author Stefan Hutchinson, "It's based on the film that [John] Fallon wrote and starred in but ignores the budget limitations that they had with that. It also deviates and goes into more surreal territory with much, much more violence."
Awesome. And you don't have to take Hutchinson's word for it. Head on over to writer/star John Fallon's official site for a glimpse of what to expect. Sure, they're only in penciled form, but they're looking good. In the meantime dig on this exclusive artwork from the upcoming bloodbath graphic novel.
Keep up the good work, guys. Your hearts are in the right place, and I'm definitely looking forward to this one! »

A Glimpse at the Predators' Home World
Every time we get to do another story on Nimrod Antal's semi-reboot of the Predator franchise, Predators, which is being produced by Robert Rodriguez, we get a little more excited. If only because neither Paul Anderson nor the dark duo of the Brothers Strause have anything to do with it. Ready for a quick look at where our favorite hunters call home?
Texas' Kngb News reports today that Troublemaker Studios recently used Canyon Lake Gorge in Texas as a backdrop for Predators, adding that the location will be used as a portion of the Predators' home planet in 20th Century Fox's Predator reboot of sorts that will be arriving in theaters July 9th, 2010.
"Specifically, they went to a spot that 10 years ago didn’t exist, but after the flood of 2001, when water went over the spillway at Canyon Lake, a huge gorge was cut out of the landscape, and »

Stephen King’s Colorado Kid Heads to Haven
12 hours ago
Stephen King’s foray into hard-boiled noir, The Colorado Kid, wasn’t exactly among his most acclaimed efforts. That’s not stopping the powers that be from putting the story on film, however, as it’s set to become a thirteen-episode miniseries on the Sci-Fi Channel (sorry, I can’t bring myself to adhere to the ‘proper’ spelling).
According to Variety, the story will air under the name Haven under the creative eyes of Lloyd Segan and Shawn Piller – the showrunners responsible for all six seasons of The Dead Zone series. Scott Shepard will executive produce alongside the King-familiar duo, but will they be able to recapture similar success with considerably weaker material?
”Haven" centers on a spooky town in Maine where cursed folk live normal lives in exile. When those curses start returning, FBI agent Audrey Parker is brought in to keep those supernatural forces at bay -- while »

Sam Raimi Helps Filmmaker Fede Alvarez Usher in an Alien Invasion
29 November 2009 11:50 PM, PST
It's amazing how much the Internet has changed everything. Look at filmmaker Fede Alvarez. A while back he put up on YouTube an incredible little invasion based short film called Ataque de Pánico (or Panic Attack! for all you gringos), and now he has a million dollar deal with Ghost House Pictures to have his brand of extraterrestrial apocalypse continue on a much larger scale.
Variety reports that Ghost House Pictures has made a seven-figure deal with a Uruguayan commercials director, Fede Alvarez, to direct his pitch for an alien invasion film.
Most first-time helmers make $250,000, but Fede Alvarez scored his million-dollar deal based on the heat generated by "Ataque de Panico!" (Panic Attack), a four-minute, 48-second short about an apocalyptic robot attack Alvarez directed through his commercial production house for less than $500. After the short found its way to the Internet and Kanye West featured a link to the film on his blog, »
