Collin talked about sequels (read here) and now let us talk about all these remakes! At the 2008 Nifff (Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival) in Switzerland, I talked with filmmakers - Hideo Nakata, Xavier Gens and Jesus Franco on what they thought on all these remakes that seem to be coming out these days. Hideo Nakata alone seemed prime to talk on the subject after having his original Ringu reworked so many times I’ve lost count on its mutations.
The Jesus Franco piece may not be immediately accessible, but after repeat listens I think you can get at the very real beating heart of cinema that he is speaking about.
Interview after the link bump.

Zombies. You love ‘em, I love ‘em, and yes, even Frontier(s) director Xavier Gens loves ‘em, which is why he’s produced a film called The Horde. Twitch Film managed to pin the man down during the Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival, where he gave them the first details about the film.
Of course there’s more to it than just zombies, as cops and robbers come into play as well. The Horde is set to roll in September under the direction of Yannick Dahan & Benjamin Rocher, and they're still looking for the undead. Lots of the undead. Check out their profile on Facebook for one open call (it's in French, but translating should be a breeze for you, all savvy and all), and their MySpace page for another.
One word of warning: They are looking for running zombies so if you decide to try out for it, make sure you're in shape,

The brutal French splatter film Frontier(s) opens with footage of riots in the Paris suburbs in response to the election of an extreme right-wing candidate. It then transitions from the frying pan into the fire, as four hoodlums flee the authorities for the countryside and wind up in an inn operated by cannibalistic neo-Nazis. That juxtaposition is what passes for social commentary in the film, which otherwise commits itself to a relentlessly ugly and derivative reworking of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Along with films like Á L'Intérieur (Inside) and Haute Tension (High Tension), Frontier(s) represents a mini-movement of Hollywood-slick yet fashionably outré French horror that seeks to beat its extreme American counterparts at their own game. In this particular case, director Xavier Gens (Hitman) probably should have aimed higher. For all practical purposes, the election-day riots are a red herring, since the gang of four, having just.

This week sees the return of the Wachowski brothers, Tarsem Singh ("The Cell") and Henry Bean ("The Believer") to the big screen, not to mention new films from documentarians Nick Broomfield ("Tupac and Biggie") and Doug Pray ("Scratch"). On the other hand, after running around Tribeca, we still need to catch up on last week's releases.
The idea of the spunky teenage boy succumbing to the allure of an experienced older woman is the kind of Hollywood golden goose that launches major careers (think Dustin Hoffman). But when the roles are reversed, the result is the directorial debut of David Ross that sees an entrepreneurial high schooler (Katherine Waterston, daughter of Sam) and her friends turn their babysitting ring into a call girl service, realizing there are alternative ways to pay for college besides waiting tables. It stars when one local dad (John Leguizamo) goes

Another French gem is finding its way to DVD on May 13, thanks to Lionsgate Home Entertainment. Arriving at retailers everywhere after a small theatrical run this spring is Xavier Gens' incredible Frontier(s) (review). The art can be found inside, but no specs have been revealed thus far other than that it will be presented in 2.35:1 widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio (French with English subtitles). Set in France, Frontier(s) tells the story of four friends who are entrenched in the Paris riots. They have stolen a large sum of money and are heading for the Danish border. On their way, they check into a motel where things appear to be too good to be true. They find that looks are deceiving as this motel rapidly turns into a house of horrors run by a Neo-Nazi family.
