If Jesus gets to show up two months early for Christmas, with his goddamned Jingle Cats CDs and Jim Carrey movies, then I decree that we here at Sound on Sight can make Halloween last just a little bit longer. So, even though it's almost mid-November, who's to say we can't still have a little spooky fun while the rest of the continent buys Nintendo DS games for their Mongoloid nephews. Tonight, we take a look at two films from cult director Richard Stanley, Dust Devil and the newly released Blu-Ray of Hardware. We're also going to take a look at the new collector's edition of 80s genre comedy Night of the Creeps, and the theatrical release of alien abduction chiller The Fourth Kind. listen now [1] Download the show in a new window [2] Listen on I-Tunes [3] RSS feeds [4] Sound On Sight Forum [5] Twitter [6] Facebook [7] Visit Severin films to pick up »

You Can't Stop Progress. Hardware Directed by Richard Stanley In a post-apocalyptic future somewhere in a radioactive desert, terminally ill Moses Baxter (Dylan McDermott) has just returned from scavenging for whatever waste he may find that could be of use to him either back home or for sale. Along his journey he discovers some robotic parts from some unknown android which he brings to his dope-smoking sculptor girlfriend Julie (Stacey Travis) as a Christmas present. She incorporates it into her latest piece, but neither of them is aware that the hardware is actually a robot programmed to kill humans. After settling in and reconnecting following his long absence, their reunion is cut short when the robot awakens, reassembles itself and resumes its original purpose as a government-sponsored population control droid. Despite few similarities, Hardware was dismissed by most as a rip-off of The Terminator. In fact, the film was heavily »

Bearing a snarky, double-take title and a premise like a glazed pig on a platter, Grant Heslov's "The Men Who Stare at Goats" can't help but get us salivating -- be it Chayefskyian satire or schizoid paranormal headtrip or Coenesque destiny farce, we'll gobble it down, especially if it is, as this movie is, based on reported fact. American military new age telekinetic absurdism! The brown-acid substance of reporter Jon Ronson's book by the same name is the dizzying crucible at hand -- too ludicrous and all true to resist, and yet so much the sum of its chortlesome vignettes that filming it would require either the cargo-cult undergroundism of a Craig Baldwin or the imposed narrative arc of an over-punctuated Hollywood biopic. Regrettably, Heslov and screenwriter Peter Straughan and producer/star George Clooney have opted for the latter. Which is to say, the madness has been dressed for dinner, »

“This is what you want…this is what you get…this is what you want…this is what you get…” Public Image Ltd. chants under the end credits of Richard Stanley’s Hardware. If what you’ve been wanting for the last decade is a worthy disc release of the 1990 sci-fi shocker, what you get from Severin Films’ recently issued two-dvd set and Blu-ray is everything you could imagine, and a few things you probably couldn’t.
First and foremost is a fine 1.85:1 transfer that holds the hyperstylized, vibrantly hued visual scheme (described by Stanley amongst the extras as “rock ’n’ roll lighting”) extremely well, with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio that’s equally aggressive. Stanley’s command of sound and image elevates Hardware above a basic storyline that he freely admits is derivative of any number of past genre films, citing everything from spaghetti Westerns and classic science fiction literature »

Despite their self-appointed pedigree as "The Criterion of Smut," Severin Films has carved a comfortable niche for themselves over the past few years as a reliable distributor of cult classics and obscure, overlooked gems. Unquestionably, their highest-profile release to date was a domestic DVD (and later Blu-ray) for Enzo Castellari's Inglorious Bastards, which inspired Tarantino's film of the same name (albeit different spelling). But they've released and reissued a number of terrific, highly-anticipated movies, almost all of which appeal to a unique and specific audience, even if they don't always register to mainstream viewers with the same excitement or awareness.
All of which brings us to Hardware, one of the company's latest releases. Though I hadn't seen it since it was first released on home video in the early 1990s, Richard Stanley's science fiction-horror film has been celebrated over the last two-plus decades as a modest masterpiece and a true cult classic, »

The 1990 killer cyborg movie Hardware, now available as a 2-disc DVD, is important for various reasons: the low budget film's successful release in the U.S. helped bankroll a then-fledgling company called Miramax; it made a semi-star out of the largely unknown Dylan McDermott; and it also features a cameo from Carl McCoy, lead singer with U.K. goth-rockers Fields of the Nephilim, whose unearthing of a robot head in some post-apocalyptic desert wasteland at the start of the flick ultimately proves bad news for pretty much every other character. Okay, maybe McCoy's cameo isn't all that "important" an event »

A twisted post-apocalyptic world transcends into a life beyond frightening. Hardware comes alive as the Richard Stanley's most profound work of big brother controlling a desolate wasteland and turning it into a playground for the ultimate killing machine. Played out like a metal or grunge type music video, this psychedelic dream takes you into a surreal setting only to bend and twist your mind, warping it in order to prepare yourself for what the M.A.R.K. 13 has in store for your delicate flesh. »

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner Bros.) A true highlight in digital restoration technology, Warner Bros. restoration of the 1939 classic is cause for celebration. The Technicolor of the late ‘30s looks as though it was shot yesterday, and is especially stunning on Blu-ray, which was produced by scanning each of the film’s original Technicolor camera negatives using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final “capture” master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film’s previous DVD release. Judy Garland’s Dorothy is charming as ever, and the entire cast: Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch, are all stellar. Four disc set bonuses include: Sing-along track; Documentaries and featurettes; Two 1914 silent films produced by Oz author L. Frank Baum, based on his stories »

If you haven’t seen Richard Stanley’s 1990 futuristic action flick “Hardware,” then shame on you. Thanks to the fine, upstanding folks at Severin Films, this hyper violent sci-fi thriller is available on Region 1 DVD for the very first time. To help promote this fantastic release, co-stars Lemmy (Taxi Driver) and Iggy Pop (Angry Bob) have reprised their respective roles for a series of kick-ass promotional clips, both of which are genuinely amusing. Even if you haven’t had the pleasure of investigating the film for yourself, they’re still a blast to watch. My advice: Pick up “Hardware,” as well as Stanley’s underrated horror flick “Dust Devil,” as soon as possible. They’re both definitely worth the investment. »

Falsely but understandably advertised as "The Terminator for the nineties" and loosely based on the 2000 A.D. comics (making it a precursor to Judge Dredd), South African-born auteur Richard Stanley's cult-beloved feature debut had only a fraction of the resources James Cameron did for his Ahnuld-pocalypse. But even in its meager limitations, Hardware is both more cynical and conscious of human indignities as a horrific cyberpunk vision of the future. In this ruddy post-apocalypse, lawlessness pervades the land and Big Brother is always watching via omnipresent closed-circuit cameras, but there's no anti-fascist revolution underway; we compliantly voted the bastards in, just as effortlessly as we decimated the environment so that only the fittest scavengers survive. Technically, the villain of Hardware (and here's where that original comparison gets made) is a murderous combat droid called the M.A.R.K. 13, which »

It's another awesome week for DVD releases gang. First up is Pieter Van Hees' Belgium thriller, Left Bank (review, amazon), and dark slow boiler that our own Hal McDermot said was "good at combining the familiar with the unsettling."
Then of course we have a couple of apocalyptic flicks, one classic and one soon-to-be. Richard Stanley's 1990 Pa android shocker, Hardware (exclusive clip, amazon), gets an overdue royal treatment from Severin who have lovingly restored the film and stuffed it with extras. As soon as my copy arrives I'll be posting a review so stay tuned. The soon-to-be classic is of course Kyle Rankin's comic tinged bug-pocalypse romp, Infestation (review, amazon). This is one of those film that does so much with so little and has so much fun doing it that you'd feel like kind of a jerk for dissing its shortcomings. Don't let the bad DVD »

Ahead of their October 13th DVD & Blu Ray release of Richard Stanley’s 1990 sci-fi epic “Hardware”, the fine folks over at Severin Films have produced a new promo video featuring Lemmy of Motörhead. In the video, Lemmy recreates his cameo role from the movie as a cab driver recalling nostalgic memories from the past as he drives through a now dystopian wasteland. It was the movie that stunned audiences, shocked the MPAA and marked the debut of one of the most uncompromising filmmakers in modern horror. Golden Globe® winner Dylan McDermott (The Practice, Dark Blue) stars as a post-apocalyptic scavenger who brings home a battered cyborg skull for his metal-sculptor girlfriend. But this steel scrap contains the brain of the M.A.R.K. 13, the military’s most ferocious bio-mechancial combat droid. It is cunning, cruel, and knows how to reassemble itself. Tonight, it is reborn…and no flesh shall be spared. »
