Kim Raver cuts into a "Grey’s Anatomy" relationship

7 October 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

I admit it — Grey’s Anatomy has drawn me back in.

I do feel a little like I’m betraying Brooke Smith, but Callie and Arizona are too adorable to resist.

However, one thing about the show really, really bugs me: the relationship between Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Owen (Kevin McKidd).

Granted, I am not a good judge of sexiness in a man, but I just can’t see this creepy guy with her. Every time I see them hold hands, I grimace. I had to leave the room when Cristina tried to seduce him with her black lace underwear. And trust me, I wanted to watch Sandra Oh in that sexy underwear.

Tuesday, EW.com’s Michael Ausiello revealed a casting tidbit that gives me hope that Owentina (yes, that’s really what fans call them) may be a bit shaky. Starting Nov. 12, Kim Raver will join Grey’s »

Watch This: Joel & Ethan Coen's 'World Cinema'

10 September 2009 8:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

In 2007, a film called Chacun son cinema was created for the 60th anniversary of Cannes (briefly mentioned here). Like a Paris je t'aime for the cinematically minded, the film collected 33 shorts from directors across the world capturing their feelings about cinema. The collection was any movie-lovers dream -- David Lynch, Gus Van Sant, Jane Campion, Atom Egoyan, Elia Suleiman, Wong Kar Wai, Lars Von Trier, and even the Coen brothers.

After Cannes, it screened at Tiff and other film festivals across the world, and got two region 2 DVD releases. But not only has there been no Region 1 disc for the North Americans eager to see the film, the Coens' World Cinema also got shafted -- not appearing on the StudioCanal DVD and not listed on the Pyramide DVD -- even though their short was a part of screenings.

But now the short, in its entirety, has popped up online and it's awesome. »

Come Watch the Coen Brothers Short Film 'World Cinema"

10 August 2009 10:32 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Anne Thompson at Thompson On Hollywood has just posted an entertaining three-minute short directed by Joel and Ethan Coen that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007 along with 32 other shorts in the Chacun son cinema. The short is called "World Cinema" and features Josh Brolin in full-on Llewelyn Moss form as he decides whether he is going to watch Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Climates or Jean Renoir's The Rules of the Game and Grant Heslov (director of The Men Who Stare at Goats) plays a theater employee helping him make his choice. Brooke Smith ("Grey's Anatomy") also appears at the end. Give it a peek directly below.

Tues Top Ten: Pregnancies

4 August 2009 8:30 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

In honor of Penélope Cruz's recently announced pregnancy and the DVD release of Lindsay Lohan's latest Labor Pains (don't everybody rush out to snatch it up at once. I promise you they'll have enough copies) in which she fakes a pregnancy to keep a job, I thought a top ten list celebrating the miracle of childbirth -- or future childbirth rather -- was called for.

But first a bit more about Ms. Lohan. Rich at fourfour collected the Labor Pain lines that were more applicable to Lindsay the celebrity than the character she happens to be playing.

...not that Lindsay plays characters these days. The Actress wrapped things up with Mean Girls, only The Celebrity lives on.

DVD Review: Take a Bite Out of ‘The Hunger: The Complete First Season’

22 June 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – “The Hunger” is one of the more unusual entries in the history of the TV anthology series, a personal favorite sub-genre of this writer raised on “The Twilight Zone,” “The Outer Limits,” “Tales From the Crypt,” and “Amazing Stories”. It has amazing star power, a loose relation to a great ’80s horror movie, and enough thrills to entertain, but has been largely forgotten by TV history.

DVD Rating: 3.0/5.0 “The Hunger” aired in syndicated form from 1997-2000. It is not directly based on the film of the same name but does feature some loose relations - horror theme, David Bowie hosted season two, and the Scott brothers (Ridley and Tony, who directed the film “The Hunger”) produced.

The Hunger: The Complete First Season was released on DVD on June 16th, 2009.

Chandra Wilson butches up Broadway

8 June 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

While Chandra Wilson might be in limbo for the next season of Grey's Anatomy, she's not going anywhere out of the spotlight. Starting today, she'll be playing Matron Mama Morton on the Broadway production of Chicago, a role made famous in the film version by Queen Latifah.

Wilson recently spoke to The Advocate about her new role and what could be coming up for Callie and Arizona on Grey's:

On Mama Morton's butch qualities:

When someone new takes over a role, the company doesn't change anything from the script, but they do lay it all out there and let people take from it what they take from it. So sometimes, depending on who's playing Mama, it might sound crazy calling Mama butch. I decided that I'll give Mama her look, her walk, and her demeanor, and then I'll let the words fall where they fall.

Interview with Sara Ramirez

6 May 2009 6:25 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

I was thrilled when AfterEllen.com asked me to interview my friend Sara Ramirez, the Tony Award-winning actress and star of Grey’s Anatomy. We met for lunch at The Abbey, a huge and mostly gay bar and restaurant in West Hollywood. Sara showed up not just on time, but early. She wore a baseball cap, sweatshirt, leggings, and no makeup. She ordered a salad and asked them to hold the olives. When it arrived covered in an abnormal amount of olives she said nothing and ate it anyway. Gotta love this girl!

We spent a few hours talking about everything from Callie’s personal proclivities to the amazing foundation that Sara just started. We discussed her rise to stardom, how she deals with Hollywood, and what animal she’d like to be. Hint: it’s not a cougar.

AfterEllen.com: So you pronounce your name Sada, correct?

Salma Hayek brought an energetic Valentina to the farmers market in La yesterday. They played in the petting zoo with the bunnies before stopping to take a look at the horses and later enjoying a yummy snow cone. The duo looked happy as they rode around in a little train with actress Brooke Smith. Salma recently announced she's working on an affordable beauty line, though she and Valentina have plenty of natural beauty to spare. Jessica Capshaw Extends Contract In "Grey's Anatomy"

27 February 2009 11:14 AM, PST | icelebz.com | See recent iCelebz news »

Jessica Capshaw's stay on "Grey's Anatomy" has been extended. The 32-year-old actress, who showed up at Seattle Grace hospital as pediatrician Arizona Robbins last month, has singed a deal to appear on more episodes.

According to EW.com, Capshaw has inked a contract to appear in all remaining episodes this season with an option to return as a series regular for the ABC medical drama next fall. She was initially signed for only three episodes.

Capshaw's Dr. Robbins has been linked as a possible romantic interest for Callie Torres, played by Sara Ramirez. Her stay in the show should answer those who are criticizing the show for being anti-gay after it got rid of Callie's first girlfriend, Dr. Erica Hahn, played by Brooke Smith.

Capshaw is perhaps best known for her role as Attorney Jamie Stringer in the now-defunct legal show "The Practice."

Jessica Capshaw stays on "Grey's"

26 February 2009 3:24 PM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Arizona and her butterfly-decorated scrub cap will be perking up Seattle Grace awhile longer.

According to EW's Michael Ausiello, Jessica Capshaw has signed a contract to appear in all remaining episodes of Grey's Anatomy this season, with an option to return as a series regular next fall.

No other details — like whether she will be required to wear roller shoes in every episode — are available, and no official announcement has yet been made.

Capshaw joined Grey's Anatomy last month as pediatric surgeon Dr. Arizona Robbins for an initial stint of three episodes. She indicated an interest in the hospital's resident bisexual woman, Callie (Sara Ramirez), but then turned her down for a date when she discovered Callie was still in the exploratory phase of coming out.

We don't know if Arizona is gay or bisexual — so far she has kissed Callie, and been seen on a date with a woman »

"Grey's Anatomy" processes the Calzona kiss

11 February 2009 6:30 AM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Well, we all saw the smooch. So now, in the grand lesbian tradition, the processing begins. A preview of this Thursday's episode of Grey's Anatomy features Callie (Sara Ramirez) telling Addison (Kate Walsh, in town for a very special, very hyped multi-episode crossover arc) what happened in — where else? — a chapel.

When last we saw the nascent lesbian couple Calzona, sunny Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) had laid an unexpected kiss on celibate Callie in the bar bathroom. After making her interest abundantly clear, Arizona exits with a beaming smile, leaving the bewildered but also smiling Callie to stare stunned at the stalls.

Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello has an exclusive clips of Callie and Addison discussing among other things God, hot peds surgeons and butterflies this week. As Addison worries that God doesn't know who she is, Callie says her own little prayer:

Dear God, I need your guidance. I kissed a peds surgeon. »

Breaking: ABC Pres. disses Melissa George and Brooke Smith, says Callie will soon be in a "dedicated lesbian relationship"

16 January 2009 1:31 PM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson faced a series of questions about Grey's Anatomy's revolving door of characters after the ABC panel at the TCA Winter Press Tour today (Melissa George just announced she was leaving the show, Janina Gavankar quietly departed, and of course, Brooke Smith was famously fired in October).

Here's a transcript of the exchange, which took place in a hallway after the panel (thanks to AfterElton.com's Michael Jensen for reporting back!):

McPherson: Melissa George was a guest for one episode.

Reporter #1: ...so many guests just leaving — no, she was in more than one episode.

McPherson: I'm not going to answer the question, that's an absurd question. The only person who has left the show is Isaiah Washington.

Reporter #2: Brooke Smith.

Reporter #3: Melissa had contracted for 8 to 11 episodes, and she hasn't gotten 8 to 11 episodes.

McPherson: She didn't contract for that many episodes, »

ABC President Steve McPherson says Tr Knight not leaving "Grey's Anatomy" ... at this point

16 January 2009 11:56 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

T.R. Knight as Dr. George O'Malley on Grey's Anatomy

We've all heard the discussion about T.R. Knight being unhappy on Grey's Anatomy and wanting out of his contract. Knight hasn't had much to say about it of late, but ABC president Steve McPherson answered a couple of questions for reporters today. Here is what he had to say:

AfterElton.com: Steve, can you comment on T.R. Knight's status on Grey's Anatomy and rumors that he was unhappy and wanted off the show.

Steve McPherson: Yeah, I'm not going to comment on behind the scenes stuff. I think everything that has been out there  ... stuff gets said that is correct. Stuff gets said that is wrong. I just wish everyone would do their jobs and worry about the show

Reporter: Will he be with the show next season?

Sm: At this point? Yeah, I've got no reason not to [think] so. »

Grey's Anatomy</i>" style="margin:0 5px 5px" />As one blogger succinctly put it, Grey's Anatomy seems to be saying goodbye to any character who has ever listened to an Indigo Girls song. George's character, an old college pal of Meredith's, was introduced just as Brooke Smith's ...
