There's a rich (if short) tradition of late night hosts taking note of new ownership at the parent company-- and last night, Conan O'Brien continued said tradition.
Playing off the adjective-laden, multipage press release which formally announced the deal Thursday, O'Brien ended his monplogue last night with a mock sincere recitation of the advantages of the new partnership. And then: He broke out the guitar. And the dancers. And Andy Richter with a tambourine.
It was a twist on the bit David Letterman did back in 1986, when Ge took over NBC and RCA. Letterman -- then the host... »

Chicago – Created by Conan O’Brien and Jonathan Groff, NBC’s “Andy Barker, P.I.” was barely given even the slightest chance to develop a following when it debuted a few years ago. Andy Richter had the worst luck as a sitcom lead, failing to find an audience for the brilliant-but-canceled “Andy Richter Controls the Universe” and then getting the axe again after only six episodes of the promising “Andy Barker, P.I.”. No wonder he returned to the loving embrace of Conan O’Brien when he went to “The Tonight Show”.
DVD Rating: 3.5/5.0
Richter’s last stab at sitcom glory was a clever comedy about a fish-out-of-water stuck in noir-esque action. The lovable sidekick played Cpa Andy Barker, a successful accountant who stumbles into the life of a private detective after he rents a storefront office that used to be occupied by someone more skilled at the seedy side of humanity. »

Andy Richter is the perfect candidate to knock Jay Leno down a peg, particularly for voicing that he'd kinda like The Tonight Show back. Conan's announcer and sidekick admitted recently that NBC is a big ball of sad, so why wouldn't he challenge himself to greater candor? It's like a sport now. Richter admitted in a new interview that Jay Leno's mistiness for The Tonight Show's 11:35 timeslot shows his character -- and he ain't a regular Atticus Finch. »

If you never managed to catch Andy Barker, P.I. when it originally aired two years ago, try not to beat yourself up. Though the show had an impressive cast, led by Andy Richter as a Cpa-turned-private-investigator, and including Harve Presnell, Tony Hale, Marshall Manesh, and Clea Lewis. It was also created by Conan O'Brien and Jonathan Groff. But it only lasted six episodes, and didn't seem to get much push from NBC. Watching it on the newly released DVD, Andy Barker, P.I.: The Complete Series, it's hard not to feel the show could have had legs if given the chance.
All's well that ends well, though, and Richter is happier than ever, paired again with Conan O'Brien on The Tonight Show, getting to do what he calls a "silly little comedy show" without dealing with the backwards world of the sitcom. I spoke with Richter earlier this week »

I admit, I went into Jj Abrams’ reboot of Star Trek (Paramount, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$39.99 Srp) not wanting to like it, based on my less than enthusiastic view of Abrams’ previous work and a healthy level of fondness for Trek (when it was done right - not in the crap Berman/Braga/Voyager/Enterprise/latter-day films era). So yes, I had to be won »

At NBC, the primetime lineup is flailing, Comcast is circling, and Jay Leno is hinting that he'd like his old job back. How are you holding up, Andy Richter? "Things at the network are not in good shape," the Tonight Show announcer confessed to Vulture. "Who knows what's gonna happen. Good God, with the network, and what's happening. I feel like there's storms brewing and we're just clinging to our little Tonight Show buoy trying to put on a funny show and trying to see how it all shakes down." [Vulture] »

For those unaware, one of the best and most poignant talk shows isn’t on network or cable television — it’s actually only on Funny Or Die. The show? Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifiniakis. The comedic relief from such films and TV shows as The Hangover and Bored To Death hosts a satire of bad local interview shows with some of his Hollywood friends, and each are funnier than the last.
Lately, he has had such guests as Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, Charlize Theron, and even fellow Hangover star Bradley Cooper. His most recent episode had the dynamic duo of late night TV, Conan O’Brien and Andy Richter. Zach has a bit of a problem with Conan, and he doesn’t hide it very well.
Check out the video behind the jump, courtesy of FunnyOrDie.com, and be sure to keep your eye on Zach G and his upcoming endeavors, »

Conan O'Brien is a better interviewee than interviewer, as this "Between Two Ferns" interview with Zach Galifianakis shows. He and Andy Richter sat down to chat with Galifianakis at FunnyorDie.com and they touch on everything from The Tonight Show to whether or not Conan touches himself while watching himself. It seems to be all scripted but it's funny (not die). There's a surprise guest star too.

Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifainakis is great. We already knew that. But up until now, he’s mainly interviewed actors known for their dramatic work or at least not known primarily for comedy (the exception being the first episode with Michael Cera). But in this new episode he sits down with two gentlemen who have been making folks laugh for their entire professional careers: The Tonight Show host Conan O’Brien and announcer Andy Richter. However, Conan soon finds that his cute string dance and self-deprecating remarks will not save him. On the contrary, they are his hilarious demise and the stone-faced Galifianakis makes this new “interview” his best one yet. I’m still coughing from a joke that made me literally fall out of my chair laughing.
Hit the jump and check out the latest episode. Now.

This was a sad day at MTV, as we had a death in the family. Ken Ober, the longtime comedian, television producer and host of early MTV game show "Remote Control," passed away at age 52.
Arguably, Ober's most indelible legacy is "Remote Control," which premiered in 1987 and was one of MTV's first attempts at crafting an original television series. The premise was delightfully low-fi: Ober posited that he hosted a media-obsessed game show out of the basement of his parents' house, and he was joined by a cast of characters who wandered through the set (including fellow comedian and former "Saturday Night Live" cast member Colin Quinn, who acted as the Andy Richter to Ober's Conan O'Brien). The show featured three contestants getting asked a barrage of pop culture questions about movies, music, television shows, sports and, of course, music videos. Along the way, the show was interrupted by comedy skits, »

Here are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.
Who would buy Hammertime on DVD? I'm actually asking. Is that something that you would actually watch again after you've already watched it on TV?
There are some good complete series sets being released this week, though: Andy Richter's Andy Barker, P.I., a Rome gift set, Farscape, and a new box for The Sopranos.

Aliens In The Attic (Blu-ray)
Directed by: John Schultz
Cast: Carter Jenkins, Austin Robert Butler, Ashley Tisdale, Robert Hoffman, Kevin Nealon, Doris Roberts, Andy Richter
Running Time: 1 hr 28 mins
Rating: PG
Due Out: November 3, 2009
Plot: A quartet of heavily-armed extra-terrestrials come to Earth to retrieve a previously abandoned doomsday machine. Who can stop them? Kids!
Who’s It For? This is the fluffiest and family-friendliest presentation of a possible alien takeover in eons. The tiny green aliens are scary more than ugly, and the overall violence in the film is for the most part slapstick. My dog would probably scamper down to the basement after a couple of loud crashes, but she has always been a wuss.
Movie:
Aliens In The Attic is a movie of shenanigans from start to finish. Before the title becomes relevant, the kids are partaking in rebellious activity, like giving the online school grades the ol’ two letter grade bump, »

Curious George. Harold and the Purple Crayon. Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. Classics each and every one. Call it a babysitter in a box or call it a great tool for educating your children, either way what we have on our hands here is 19 hours of story books new and old converted to a digital medium. Some of these genuinely are treasures reincarnated in an animated medium while others are newer stories that have yet to prove their heirloom mettle. However, your average tot won’t care as much about the legacy of a given story as they will about the presentation. A majority of the stories found on these 16 discs have received the full animation treatment from the humble illustration origins, but there are a few in the collection which are little more than scans of the pages being panned over by the camera. Thinking outside the box when it comes to naming babies goes part and parcel with being a celebrity, and in their search to come up with the perfect moniker some have clearly pushed that envelope more than others. According to nameberry.com co-founder Linda Rosenkrantz, word names are an increasingly popular way to do just that.
“When looking for a really unusual baby name, many celebrities have started to search the dictionary for a noun or adjective that will define their child, choosing words that have rarely, if ever been used before as people-names,” she explains.

If things don't work out for Project Runway winner Christian Siriano in the fashion biz, he might want to consider a full-time gig as a talk show diva. As the number one guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show today, Christian was fierce, fun and oh-so-comfy that at times I thought Ms. O had her own little Ed McMahon or Andy Richter... but with a lot more style.
Oprah devoted the show to reality TV and the big get was Adam Lambert, the runner up in last season's American Idol. You wouldn't have guessed he was second place based on the assertion by Oprah that he was the top choice of her viewers when asked which reality star they wanted to see on her show.
I know I'm cynical, but I think it was planned. Adam's album is coming out on November 23 and there's already been lots of buzz, including the CD cover. »

Whenever a celebrity cook appears on a talk show like The Late Show or The Tonight Show, it's hardly ever a real cooking demonstration. Letterman will start drinking cooking sherry right out of the bottle or Conan will just go nuts and spread butter all over something he shouldn't.
Last night was particularly crazy, as Conan, Garry Shandling, and Andy Richter helped Paula Deen make... something for Halloween. It gets kinda hectic so I'm not sure what it was.

Funnyman Andy Richter says that his two children William Oscar, 8 ½, and Mercy Josephine, 4, have well-developed senses of humor — but what’s comedy to them isn’t comedy to most adults!
“All you have to do to make them laugh is throw pee and poop into the conversation or make fart noises,” Andy tells Babble. “They love that.”
“When my son started to get to the age of liking jokes, every one we would make involved pee or poop or farting. We thought, ‘Oh my God, we’ve raised a frat-house monster.’ Then we took a »

When you think of Amy Poehler, your mind could veer off into 10 different directions: the star of NBC’s Parks and Recreation, Weekend Update anchor, SNL’s Hillary Clinton impersonator, the baby mama from Baby Mama, etc. Well, if you haven’t already, you should add one more to that list: Bessie Higgenbottom, a senselessly energetic 10-year-old intent on earning every badge in Honeybee Scout history. For over a year Poehler has given her voice to Bessie (complete with a Sylvester the Cat-styled lisp) on Nickelodeon’s The Mighty B!, a cartoon show she co-created with friends Cynthia True and »

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner Bros.) A true highlight in digital restoration technology, Warner Bros. restoration of the 1939 classic is cause for celebration. The Technicolor of the late ‘30s looks as though it was shot yesterday, and is especially stunning on Blu-ray, which was produced by scanning each of the film’s original Technicolor camera negatives using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final “capture” master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film’s previous DVD release. Judy Garland’s Dorothy is charming as ever, and the entire cast: Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch, are all stellar. Four disc set bonuses include: Sing-along track; Documentaries and featurettes; Two 1914 silent films produced by Oz author L. Frank Baum, based on his stories »
