Let's Look Back at the First Six Months of 2008

8 July 2008 3:06 PM, PDT | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Wild and wooly, there was little to love, but a lot to look forward to... A lot has happened in the past six months and while there may not have been very many good movies and there were plenty of bad ones there was much more to remember as well as a lot to look forward to. First off, the writers'strike was finally settled, but as we move into the second half of 2008 the actors are now threatening to shut down Hollywood with a strike of their own. We learned of a new kind of woman out in the wild and she is known as a "Twilight Mom", a term that proved it could wreck havoc on your server should you decide to bash any part of Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" novels or the film based on said material. I wrote an article called "I Wanna Be a 'Twilight' Mom!

Comic Harvey Korman Dead At 81

Actor Harvey Korman, a second-banana comic who appeared in numerous Mel Brooks movies and was featured on The Carol Burnett Show in the 1960s and '70s, died Thursday in Los Angeles at age 81 from complications from a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. Unlike many comedians who are often dour offstage, his daughter Katherine Korman told the New York Times Thursday, her father "was always funny in real life. ... He would like to see how far he could push the limits, making people laugh. If he were here now, he would want us to be joking."

Harvey Korman has left the stage for the final time. The veteran television actor passed away yesterday at the age of 81.

As you probably now, Korman had a very prolific and long career. Many came to know him via his work in Mel Brooks movies like History of the World Part I, High Anxiety, and Blazing Saddles or two of the Pink Panther movies.

Korman starred on several short-lived comedy TV series and was a guest on quite a few others. He appeared in the first Love Boat pilot (featuring a very different crew) and popped up four times on the series that followed. Korman could also be found on The Muppet Show, The Golden Palace, The Munsters, Roseanne, ER, and many other shows over the years.

Comic Actor Korman Dies

30 May 2008 1:12 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Blazing Saddles star Harvey Korman has died. He was 81.

The Emmy Award-winning actor passed away at the Ucla Medical Center in Los Angeles on Thursday after suffering complications from the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm - an often fatal swelling of one of the body's main arteries.

Korman's daughter Kate has paid tribute to her father, insisting he fought hard against his ailing health.

She says, "It was a miracle in itself that he survived the incident (the aneurysm) at all. Everyone in the hospital referred to him as 'miracle man' because of his strong will and ability to bounce right back after several major operations.

"Tragically, after such a hard-fought battle, he passed away."

Korman was best known for his role opposite Mel Brooks in 1974 spoof film Blazing Saddles. But his regular appearances on 1960s TV programme The Carol Burnett Show won him critical acclaim and four Emmy Awards. He also landed a Golden Globe for the show in 1975. He went on to front his own programme The Harvey Korman Show in 1978 and star in a variety of movies including 1995's Dracula: Dead and Loving It.

Korman is survived by his wife Deborah, daughters Kate, Laura and Maria, son Chris and three grandchildren.

Harvey Korman: 1927-2008

29 May 2008 5:50 PM, PDT | From IMDb News

Comedian Harvey Korman, a multiple-Emmy award winner best known for his work on "The Carol Burnett Show" and in comedies such as Blazing Saddles, died Thursday at the age of 81.

According to a family statement, issued by UCLA Medical Center, Korman reportedly suffered complications related to the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm he experienced four months ago.

Korman’s television career spanned back to the early ‘60s, including small parts on such classic series as "The Red Skelton Show" and "The Untouchables". It was not until he began to appear in skits on "The Danny Kaye Show" that he became known for his dry delivery and ease with playing the second banana. Korman joined that show’s cast in 1964 and remained with it until its cancellation in 1967, the same year he joined the skit comedy series that made him a household name, "The Carol Burnett Show."

On "Carol Burnett" the lanky Korman’s claim to fame was playing the perfect straight man to the outrageous slapstick comedy of the other actors in the cast, but mainly Burnett and fellow cast member Tim Conway. They, and the fourth member of the variety show's core ensemble, Vicki Lawrence, spoofed a number of iconic films and television series throughout the show’s run.

"We were an ensemble, and Carol had the most incredible attitude,” Korman said in a 2005 Variety interview. "I've never worked with a star of that magnitude who was willing to give so much away.''

Korman spent ten seasons on "Carol Burnett” before leaving to helm his own series, "The Harvey Korman Show", which was quickly canceled. But the comedy actor soon parlayed his familiarity into a number of recognizable roles on series such as "The Love Boat", "Roseanne" and "Mama’s Family". He also lent his voice to The Great Gazoo on "The Flintstones" in 1966, before finding fame on "Carol Burnett."

But it was his turn as Hedley Lamarr, a clumsy version of a mustache-twirling villain in Mel Brooks' Western satire Blazing Saddles, that film buffs may recall best. He also appeared in two other Brooks comedies, History of the World: Part I and High Anxiety, in addition to playing Professor Auguste Balls in Trail of the Pink Panther and Curse of the Pink Panther.

More recently Korman partnered with Conway for a live show, "Tim Conway and Harvey Korman: Together Again," which toured the country.

He is survived by his daughters Katherine and Laura, his wife Deborah Fritz, and two children from his previous marriage to Donna Ehlert, Maria and Christopher.
