Casting Bites: Yeardley Smith Goes to 'High School' & More

17 November 2008 3:15 PM, PST | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Just a month ago, we learned that Adrien Brody and Michael Chiklis were heading back to High School -- a rather unique comedy about a high school valedictorian (Matt Bush) who gets high with the school stoner (Sean Marquette), and then tries to use his smarts to get out of an upcoming drug test. Rather then messing with his own results, he schemes to get the entire school stoned to beat the system. Brody's the drug dealer, Chiklis is the principal, and now The Hollywood Reporter posts that Lisa Simpson, aka Yeardley Smith, will play a homeroom teacher while Luis Chavez (Crash) plays a druggie friend of the valedictorian.

Meanwhile, Variety reports that Navy NCIS actress Cote de Pablo is making the jump to the big screen with Scott Speedman's The Last Rites of Ransom Pride. The Calgary Herald describes it as "a violent ransom about a woman trying

tMF 10-day Twilight Blog-a-Thon! - Day Three

13 November 2008 2:34 PM, PST | From The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news

I skipped Day 2 for the simple reason that both the Robert Pattinson's articles are still getting lots of attention from Twilight fans. Now another hot topic has arrived, featuring (once again, drum roll please!) Robert Pattinson! Is his performance Oscar worthy? Meyer says Aye! , some Oscar bloggers and readers say Nay! . This has been going on for years. Movie bloggers and their regular audiences are going crazy over at Oscar Watch - any news about movies, actors, filmmakers, musicians and especially those who decide on when a movie is to be shown (a.k.a. The Big Studios) is analyzed, discussed and debated with an added bonus - they even have statistics to show which films are currently in the running for Best Picture. - - - - - - A word of caution for Twilight fans: Unless you're absolutely sure you can control yourself and can respond 'reasonably

Will Mickey Rourke Pull an Eddie Murphy and Miss Out On Oscar?

Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler

Photo: Fox Searchlight In 2007 everyone was touting Eddie Murphy for an Oscar for his performance in Dreamgirls. He paid back the good wishes with Norbit and ended up not winning as Alan Arkin took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Little Miss Sunshine sending Eddie home with nothing but the $95+ million Norbit made at the box-office. Hey, wait a minute, that's a pretty good consolation prize if you ask me. Of course he had to sell his soul and make a movie that was roundly shunned, but you gotta do what you gotta do, just as the Wayans brothers. Well, this year the talk of the town is Mickey Rourke, he's no longer getting into trouble and he has a bonafide hit on his hands, at least in acting terms. Everyone has been praising his performance as Randy "The Ram" Robinson in The Wrestler

Oscar Update: Defiance, Twilight(?), Australia, Wrestler and New Predictions

12 November 2008 1:38 AM, PST | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Well, last week it was all about Miramax's Doubt as it finally screened and had a few mixed reactions, but didn't inspire Oscar blogger finger pointing so I guess that's something. However, this week all the buzz has been around Baz Luhrmann's Australia as word began circling Fox had forced Baz to change the downer ending to a more upbeat one. I already discussed the original charge and the Fox response, but Baz has also issued his own statement saying: "You really think that on my films people tell me what to do? I don't think so," he said. "On my films I decide." "I wrote six endings and I shot three," said Luhrmann, adding that he decided not to use the ending where Jackman's character dies. "There is a death at the end of this film, but it's a surprise how that works."

With that, I am done with the controversy,

Richard Jenkins joins ‘Dear John’ adaptation

11 November 2008 5:22 AM, PST | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Richard Jenkins has signed on to star in Lasse Hallstrom’s adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks bestseller “Dear John.”

Also on board is Amanda Seyfried, who plays a young woman falling in love with a solider (Channing Tatum) while he’s on leave.

The Hollywood Reporter says Jenkins is set to play Tatum’s father. The film is currently shooting, with Hallstrom directing a screenplay by Jamie Linden.

Jenkins most recently starred in Joel and Ethan Coen’s “Burn After Reading.” He also delivered a strong performance in Thomas McCarthy’s recent drama “The Visitor.”

Final word: Yeah, Jenkins truly is a fine actor, and I can only hope to see him around on the big screen more often.

Oscar Update: Doubt in 'Doubt', Eastwood's First Acting Oscar and Winslet's Works

5 November 2008 2:14 AM, PST | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Following the recent AFI screening of Doubt, which was actually an unfinished print, media that was in attendance was asked not to discuss the flick, but a few nuggets are leaking out here and there and the film remains a high profile feature. Most recently Dave Karger at "Entertainment Weekly" called it one of "three sure shots" at the Oscars this year alongside The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Frost/Nixon. He most recently took the naysayers to task with a recent post saying the following: An intimate character piece, Doubt doesn't boast the expansive production values of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Australia, or even Revolutionary Road. And with crowd-pleasers like The Dark Knight and Slumdog Millionaire in the picture, a tougher film like Doubt could get squeezed out. But here's why I think it may make the final five. It's looking fairly likely that four of the film's actors-Streep,

Angelina Jolie Suprises A-Listers at Hollywood Film Festival

28 October 2008 8:30 AM, PDT | From Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news

It was an exciting evening in Hollywood when Angelina Jolie showed up to hand Clint Eastwood the Director of the Year award at the Hollywood Film Festival Awards last night. Actors like Ryan Gosling, James Franco, Dustin Hoffman, Natalie Portman and so many more dressed up to honor their peers at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The audience was surprised when Angelina strutted out fresh from her recent trip to Afghanistan to speak about Clint. She said: "There are some people in this business that are icons, and we often wonder if, when we meet them, they'll live up to what we imagine them to be. And Clint Eastwood in person is even better. Clint is what every great director should be. He is a great leader. And I certainly would follow him anywhere." Clint returned the compliments as usual talking about Angelina's talent and beauty. With award season still a few months away,

Oscar Update: Best Actor Chatter, Talks of 'Doubt' and Scott-Thomas is Praised

26 October 2008 5:23 AM, PDT | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Yesterday we learned an unfinished version of Doubt will be replacing The Soloist at the AFI Film Festival on October 30. The fact Miramax is cool with showing an unfinished print as an Opening Night Gala film tells me a lot about the quality of the flick. I thought the first trailer was outstanding and have since been looking forward to see this film. Speaking of looking forward to films, Milk was supposed to screen here in Seattle this past Monday, but when Gus Van Sant bailed on his Seattle Pa tour the screening was cancelled only hours beforehand, which now means I must wait until November 6 to get my first drink of the flick, which along with Doubt, looks like one to love. This will mark Doubt's second screening as it was shown to its original Broadway cast plus a few dozen journalists and film industry honchos last night (Oct.

Movie Review: The Visitor (2008)

24 October 2008 7:26 AM, PDT | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Richard Jenkins and Haaz Sleiman in The Visitor

Photo: Overture Films Writer/director Tom McCarthy has found success in banality, by working magic into his stories and treating them as living organisms rather than just movies. Five years ago he gave us The Station Agent a fantastic little film that didn't receive its due when released despite a large amount of critical acclaim. With The Visitor McCarthy has seemingly plucked a character that would have easily fit into The Station Agent and given him his own film. While the storyline is as commonplace as the one used in The Station Agent, it is McCarthy's ability to tweak it just enough that keeps you watching. The Visitor centers on Walter (Richard Jenkins), a college professor you immediately recognize as someone who is bored with his job and his life. When told he will have to head to New York to present

Casting the 2008 Presidential Election

16 October 2008 7:05 PM, PDT | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Forget Oliver Stone's W. (which is sorta boring if you ask me), we are going major and leaving no stone unturned as we set out to cast a feature film adaptation of the 2008 Presidential Election. From the media elite to the folks at the top of the ticket there is hardly a name we leave off this list and myself along with the help of my casting directors Laremy Legel and David Frank have put together a list of names that won't necessarily break the bank of our producers, but represent some of the finest talent in Hollywood and will be put to good use. Currently Eric Roth (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Forrest Gump and The Insider) is writing the script for Steven Soderbergh to direct. Roth has shown the ability to tap into a political thrill ride with The Insider but also shown a more comedic

Psycho, Rear Window and Vertigo If you haven't yet checked out my Movie Magic article from Monday it was inspired by the audio commentary from Psycho and I have yet to check out the special features for either Rear Window or Vertigo, but I did get a chance to watch Vertigo just last night. While Psycho is great and Rear Window may be my favorite Hitchcock film I have no idea what people see in Vertigo. That film is long and for the most part downright boring. I don't think the con pulled on Scottie is all that intriguing and the hokey dialogue is just too much to bear. The AFI recently named Vertigo the ninth best American movie ever made, with Psycho at 14 and Rear Window at 48. Maybe I am in the minority, but Vertigo

Sean Ellis’ The BRøKEN Trailer and Clips

6 October 2008 8:29 AM, PDT | From TwitchFilm.net | See recent Twitch news

There are a number of us around here who were big fans of Sean Ellis‘ directorial debut Cashback.  A solid balance of the romantic, mundane and humourous that made ample use of Ellis‘ photographer skills in creating a rich visual palette for, of all things, a supermarket.  It looks like those visual skills are going to be tossed into the horror film arena with the follow-up.  That would be The Brøken, for which you will find clips and the trailer below the break).  Now the girl in the bathtub is hardly a new or original image in the genre, it is notable that a Glazer/Kubrick vibe is (to me anyway) visible amongst the images.  With a cast like the fabulously underused Lena Heady (who easily has the best performance in 300 and has done solid work in under appreciated gems like Ripley’s Game, Merlin and Aberdeen.  Is anyone watching the Sarah Connor Chronicles?

Review: Burn After Reading

3 October 2008 7:36 PM, PDT | From The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news

The cynical, but incredibly funny Burn After Reading is sure to divide audiences. But then, I'd expect nothing less from the Coen Brothers. Coming off their Oscar winning No Country For Old Men, the sibling auteurs have switched gears with this smart comedy about dumb people.

The goofy plot revolves around two dopey gym employees (wonderfully played by a quirky Frances McDormand and a spectacularly clueless Brad Pitt) who try to blackmail an ex-cia agent after his mysterious computer disc lands in their unsuspecting laps. Malkovich plays his inscrutable G-man with his patented hard-bitten glee. What's on the disc is virtually irrelevant, just the fact that everyone desperately wants the disc, is what propels the hilariously intricate plot.

Like many Coen Brothers efforts, the chaotic Burn After Reading is a love it or hate it kind of experience. Personally, I loved it. This sly, darkly funny take on spy and

MAKING WAVES: Tom Sturridge Joins Cast In Indie Romance 'Waiting for Forever'

24 September 2008 9:26 AM, PDT | From The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news

Even before we put the spotlight on Robert Pattinson, tMF has been covering the acting career of fellow British actor Tom Sturridge (http://themovie-fanatic.com/hotlist/rising_stars/tom_sturridge/). Following a fantastic performance in Like Minds - together with another favorite, Eddie Redmayne - we were disappointed when the producers of Jumper replaced Tom with the more popular but definitely less talented Hayden Christensen. Now, in a bizarre coincidence of sorts, Tom will be appearing in a new movie with Rachel Bilson (who replaced another actress previously cast in Jumper). Here's the good news for all Tom Sturridge fans - this was just posted by The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3i324d533915afe51bafbd5fc55f77357e): Tom Sturridge is starring in Waiting for Forever, an indie romantic comedy being directed by James Keach. Seven more join ‘Waiting for Forever’

23 September 2008 5:14 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Just yesterday we reported Rachel Bilson joined James Keach’s upcoming romantic comedy “Waiting for Forever,” and according to the Hollywood Reporter earlier today, seven more have signed on to star in the film.

Joining Bilson are Tom Sturridge, Jaime King, Nikki Blonsky, Scott Mechlowicz, Riley Smith, Blythe Danner and Richard Jenkins. That’s quite a cast Keach has lined up.

Sturridge stars as the lead character, a young man who prefers not to work and decides to reconnect with his childhood love, a TV actress living in Hollywood (Bilson).

Keach is directing a script by Steve Adams. The low-budget film heads into production next week.

Sturridge’s acting credits include “Vanity Fair” and “Being Julia.” King will next be seen in Frank Miller’s “The Spirit.” As for Blonsky, she starred in last ear’s hit musical “Hairspray.”
