Hugh Jackman is currently arguing with Daniel Craig every night on Broadway in the play A Steady Rain, but he's not going to be going from there directly back to his Wolverine claws. In the meantime he's got his eye on Real Steel, a movie that has several crazy things going for it. 1) It is directed by Night at the Museum's Shawn Levy. 2) It is about robot boxing. 3) Its director is comparing it to Rocky. Yes, Levy is apparently fearless and is comparing Real Steel to the most famous boxing movie of all time. In an interview with Sci Fi Wire, Levy said, "It's faithful to the [original Richard Matheson] story in that that story was very much about a down-on-his-luck, slightly desperate journeyman who works in this robot boxing sport and who is desperately needing redemption and one last shot. The movie is more Rocky than Transformers." Levy also ... »

You probably didn't see The Box. I think that's clear. So I'll reference I Am Legend as something from writer Richard Matheson with which you might be familiar. The sci-fi author even wrote some Twilight Zone episodes early on, and his latest film adaptation, Real Steel, may star Hugh Jackman as a futuristic fighter battling robots for his last shot at glory.
Director Shawn Levy - clearly not one of the first hundred choices on my list for something like this - tells Sci-Fi Wire that Jackman is the front-runner to play the lead role in the film. The news came during an interview for the DVD release of Levy's Night at the Museum sequel. See what I mean? Way down on the list.
In the story, human boxing has gone the way of...well, heavyweight boxing. So instead, people watch robot boxing. I don't buy that, personally, because where's the catharsis? »

While on the rounds promoting the DVD for Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian director Shawn Levy was asked about Real Steel, a sci-fi film that would see Hugh Jackman boxing Rocky-style against robots. From Sci-Fi Wire: “Hugh Jackman plays a former boxer who can therefore no longer do the only thing he was [...] »

As we heard not long ago, Hugh Jackman is trading in his razor claws for some metallic boxing gloves for a futuristic action-drama called Real Steel. The movie is described as "a Rocky-esque tale of a fighter who has to reinvent himself when human boxing becomes obsolete, replaced by 2000 pound human-like robots," and director Shawn Levy (A Night At The Museum 1 & 2) gives a bit more info to Sci-Fi Wire. The movie is apparently based on story by Richard Matheson (I Am... »

Director Shawn Levy has revealed more about his upcoming sci-fi movie “Real Steel”, which is being described as “a father/son action drama set in the near future, surrounding the sport of robot boxing.” If that sounds familiar, it may be because the movie will be based on a short story by the prolific sci-fi/fantasy writer Richard Matheson (”I am Legend”, among many, many others), who previously adapted his story into a “Twilight Zone” episode in 1963 called “Steel”. In the interview, Levy says that the movie won’t be an all-out robot action movie ala “Terminator” or “Transformers”. He also confirms that the top candidate to headline the film is Hugh Jackman. Levy is known primarily as a comedy director, so this will be his first non-comedy role. Which is good news to anyone who was afraid Levy might turn this thing into a PG-rated gagfest ala the silly »

I know I shouldn’t be so hard on Shawn Levy, but it’s infuriating when there’s a director in Hollywood who’s so successful and has no ability whatsoever. I’m not talking about journeyman directors who don’t have a particular style or clear artistic drive. Levy is a director who can have a budget and an army of talented actors and still come out with a crushingly mediocre film that snuffs out imagination rather than kindles it.
So when I read about how he wants to make his upcoming robot boxing movie Real Steel to Rocky, I’m not encouraged. Hit the jump to read his confident yet astonishingly non-sensical ideas for his movie.
With Hugh Jackman attached to star, Real Steel is about a guy down-on-his luck who works in robot boxing sports and takes one last shot at the title while re-connecting with this son. »

Sir Ian McKellan has disappointed X-men fans by insisting he won't appear in a spin-off sequel based on his character Magneto.
The veteran actor starred in three X-Men films as the magnetic villain and movie bosses are said to be planning a new movie to reveal the character's beginnings.
The project will follow in the footsteps of X-Men Origins: Wolverine which featured Hugh Jackman's X-Men alter-ego.
But McKellan, 70, is adamant a spin-off featuring Magneto will not involve him - he's too old to play such a demanding part.
He tells EmpireOnline, "There's meant to be a Magneto script floating around, but I've not read it, so I suspect it wouldn't involve me. I think it would be about the younger Magneto, and the most I could hope for would be to top and tail that. They can't have someone whose face is as lined as mine any longer!" »

Back in September we heard that Night at the Museum and Date Night director Shawn Levy might be doing a movie called Real Steel, which depicts a world in which people get their kicks watching robots beat the hell out of each other. Then we heard that Hugh Jackman was the frontrunner as the lead role. Now Levy is out promoting Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian on DVD, and he's confirmed that Jackman is who he wants for the lead. He's also talking more about the plot, which he says is "more Rocky than Transformers." Robo-Rocky? Oh, joy! The script, originally by Dan Gilroy, but rewritten by Leslie Bohem and then John Gatins, is based on the same Richard Matheson short story that became a Twilight Zone episode called Steel, starring Lee Marvin. Levy says they're staying true to the original prose story, and that he's putting »

Let's be quite honest with ourselves: The people aren't choosing quiet art-house movies or no-name character actors – they're choosing Twilight and True Blood and anything else that involves a vampire in some way, shape or form. The nominations for this year's People's Choice Awards have been announced, and not surprisingly they're filled with Twilight-related names. In fact, out of all the movie categories, only two do not feature Twilight: Favorite Breakout Movie Actress and Favorite Comedic Star. But when you sneak on over to the other categories, you'll notice that Robert Pattinson is among those vying for Favorite Movie Actor (alongside Brad Pitt, Hugh Jackman, Johnny Depp and Ryan Reynolds), and Kristen Stewart is in the running for Favorite Movie Actress...

Who needs critics? Who needs experts? Since the dawn of the internet and the democratization of entertainment, who really needs someone to tell them what is good and what is not good? Clearly, the people who made up the list of nominees below -- the 18 million voters of the People's Choice Awards -- need some assistance. It is sad -- void of great drama such as Mad Men and full of teenie-bopper schlock like Twilight -- but also triumphant, as it makes me feel great about my own job security. Thank you America, for once again proving that you need me. The 2009 People's Choice Awards will air on January 6, 2010 on CBS.
