Karyn Kusama's gritty urban drama Girlfight and Kenneth Lonergan's family drama You Can Count on Me (2000) shared the Sundance Film Festival's Grand Jury Prize Saturday night the first tie vote since 1993. Kusama also won for best director, while Lonergan took the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. The Documentary Competition Jury award went to Long Night's Journey Into Frances Day Reid and Deborah Hoffmann's film dealing with the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission's efforts to achieve a lasting peace in post-Apartheid South Africa The documentary directing award went to Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman whose Paragraph 175 documented the persecution of homosexuals by the Nazis during World War 2.
