Space. The Final Frontier. A place few were willing to venture with the last two Star Trek: The Next Generation helmed films. On virtual life support, J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot collaborators reinvented the iconic franchise into something hardened Star Trek fans and casual moviegoers without an ounce of prior interest in the series could equally digest and enjoy. His efforts carried Star Trek into a new frontier of success and riches at the 2009 box office, to a place where Paramount's treatment of the Blu-ray Disc release should . and marvelously does - fall into the esteemed category of exemplary.
Star Trek's reboot begins with a huge bang, a knockout prologue that chronicles the birth of James T. Kirk and the death of his father, a Starship Captain (for twelve minutes), all during a surprise attack by a renegade Romulan Nero (Eric Bana). Flash forward a quarter of a »

The cast for Jay Roach's comedy Dinner with Schmucks is getting downright epic. The French remake already stars Steve Carell as the world's worst dinner guest and Paul Rudd as the guy who invites him, and over the past few weeks we've seen names like Zach Galifianakis, British actress Lucy Punch, Stephanie Szostak, Bruce Greenwood and another Brit, David Walliams, added to the crew. Now they've picked up a guy who's been tragically underused in movies lately. Ron Livingston, who popped up memorably but thanklessly in this summer's The Time Traveler's Wife, will join the dinner party in an unknown role, at least unknown by Variety. The story revolves around a group of friends who invite over, well, schmucks in order to make fun of them, and I can easily see Livingston as one of the regular guests ready to lay into whichever poor sap they invite over next. »

Ron Livingston is the beating heart of Mike Judge’s Office Space, a movie that has transcended cult status and is pretty much one of the finest comedies to be released in the 1990s. He’s also pretty notable for the role of Captain Lewis Nixon in Band of Brothers on HBO.
Now, he’ll be joining director Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents) for his new film Dinner for Schmucks.
According to Variety, the film “is an adaptation of the Francis Veber-helmed French film Le dinner de cons, in which a group of bourgeois friends regularly invite the biggest schmucks to dinner to ridicule them.”
The cast that’s shaping up for this film is phenomenal. It’ll be headed up by I Love You, Man’s Paul Rudd and The Office’s Steve Carell, who of course acted together in The 40-Year-Old-Virgin. They’ll be joined »

While we assumed we had already received our monthly casting fix for “Dinner for Schmucks” with the news of Bruce Greenwood and David Walliams joining the cast a couple weeks ago, it turns out that everyone wants a seat at the table for Jay Roach’s upcoming comedy, “Dinner for Schmucks”. The latest addition to the party is Ron Livingston who joins Greenwood, Walliams, and leads Zach Galifianakis, Paul Rudd, and Steve Carell. Hit the jump for more details.
“Schmucks” is a remake of the 1998 French film “Le dîner de cons,” (released in the U.S. as “The Dinner Game”) where a group of jerks have a weekly dinner where each asshole brings the dumbest person they can find and whoever has the dumbest guest wins. Looking at these six cast members, the challenge is in discerning who’s playing a dummy and who’s playing an asshole (of course »

Dinner for Schmucks is already a collection of amazing comedic talent-- Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Zach Galifianakis are already playing the lead roles, and up and comers Lucy Punch and Stephanie Szostak are on board too. But someone has to play the snarling bad guys somewhere, and who better to do it with a smile than Bruce Greenwood? Greenwood, whom we all fell in love with over again in Star Trek, will play a billionaire investor, while British comedian David Walliams plays a Swiss banker whom Rudd's character is trying to impress. Variety doesn't make it clear how these financial dealings work into a plot about guys who have weekly dinner parties with terrible guests, but I guess there has to be some kind of plot other that Carell, Rudd and Galifianakis making each other laugh. »

With each month comes a new “Dinner for Schmucks” casting decision. In August Zach Galifianakis signed on board; in September, Stephanie Szostak came onboard as the female lead; and now Bruce Greenwood and David Walliams are having a seat. Greenwood will play a billionaire and Walliams a Swiss banker Paul Rudd tries to impress. More on the actors and film after the jump.
Earlier this year, Bruce Greenwood played a pretty memorable role in “Star Trek,” as Capt. Christopher Pike. You know, the man who dared Kirk to do better. He’s a great actor with good comedic timing–he should fit in. And if you’ve ever seen “Little Britain” (or “Little Britain USA”), you know David Walliams is a real talent. I wish that show would drop the laugh track, but I still found it pretty funny. Check this out.

Kelly Reichardt remains a very, very small-scale director, even after movies like Old Joy and Wendy and Lucy won rapturous reviews from critics (like me) and attract name talent like Michelle Williams. Given that she films outside of Hollywood with shoestring crews, it makes sense that the beginning of filming of her next film, Meek's Cutoff, flew under the radar. In today's Variety piece about Paul Dano joining the cast of Wichita, the final paragraph mentions that he's part of the Meek's Cutoff cast, alongside girlfriend and theater actress Zoe Kazan, Bruce Greenwood, Michelle WIlliams and Shirley Henderson. The fact that there are so many moderately well-known actors in the film suggests that there are a lot more characters operating in this one than in Wendy and Lucy, and maybe a lot more money too. Not that any of these actors are demanding huge salaries, but simply having that many »

- I love how Variety makes a casual, end-of-article mention that is all alarm bells and whistles for us. In a Paul Dano casting update for the James Mangold project, comes word that Kelly Reichardt is in Oregon currently shooting a period pic that has her re-teaming with Wendy and Lucy's Michelle Williams, and has the filmmaker working with her biggest cast yet additionally working with Dano, Bruce Greenwood (probably suggested by Todd Haynes), Shirley Henderson and Zoe Kazan. We reported that the filmmaker was fleshing out a Western-themed project, so it looks like she'll be well-prepared for working in difficult terrain. Written by Jon Raymond (who wrote on her previous film and Old Joy), the film's title Meek's Cutoff is based on the tale with perhaps Gerry-like consequences. The year is 1845, the earliest days of the Oregon Trail, and a wagon team of three families has hired the »

Philip Seymour Hoffman and Catherine Keener in Capote
Photo: Sony Pictures Classics As I said in my What I Watched column on Sunday, I finally got around to watching the 2005 and 2006 Truman Capote films, Capote and Infamous. The first earned five Oscar nominations and one win for Phillip Seymour Hoffman who played the eccentric author to the delight of many. The second was released just over a year later to absolutely no attention whatsoever. This isn't a surprise. Technically Capote is a better film and was deserving of its nomination of Hoffman in the lead role, but to say it is a quality Best Picture candidate, Director or Adapted Screenplay is pushing it, but also comes in large part due to what I perceive to be a poor year in quality film. I mean, Munich was a Best Picture contender and Crash came out on top. Yikes. However, my commentary »
