This past fall saw the debut of the supernatural horror/comedy Jennifer’s Body, and with the film's Blu-ray and DVD release being only a few weeks away (December 29th), I thought it might be interesting to take a look back at some of the most successful high school horror films that have been released over the past 10 to 15 years.
Jennifer’s Body is a slick production, equipped with fresh young stars, a hip soundtrack, and, of course, strings of "clever" dialogue. And that’s the criteria I’ve chosen to adhere to when working on this top ten list. Some of the films included here aren’t necessarily my favorites, but they’ve been impactful and deserve the call-out all the same. At the risk of spoiling some of the choices, I chose 1996 as the eligibility year for the simple reason that it was the beginning of the glossy, »

Possession(s), a new Australian short, featured one of the most notable launches in recent memory. To coincide with the film’s release a famous Peter Booth artwork, Painting (Man With Bandaged Head), was sold off in The Deutscher and Hackett Important Fine Art Auction.
The tie-in between the film and the auction comes in the shape of actor Laurence Fuller who used the painting, which he owned, as inspiration for the dark, brooding short. His character Frank, upon seeing the Peter Booth work, becomes embroiled with a sense of obsession; he simply has to own the piece and will do anything to make it so. However, it soon becomes clear that Frank is not the only one consumed by the desire to possess.
Laurence Fuller shines in the lead role and it is easy to see why he is a much sought after young actor. Having attended the Method »

Kelly Reichardt is in Oregon currently shooting a period pic that has her re-teaming with Wendy and Lucy's Michelle Williams, and has the filmmaker working with her biggest cast yet additionally working with Dano, Bruce Greenwood (probably suggested by Todd Haynes), Shirley Henderson and Zoe Kazan. - I love how Variety makes a casual, end-of-article mention that is all alarm bells and whistles for us. In a Paul Dano casting update for the James Mangold project, comes word that Kelly Reichardt is in Oregon currently shooting a period pic that has her re-teaming with Wendy and Lucy's Michelle Williams, and has the filmmaker working with her biggest cast yet additionally working with Dano, Bruce Greenwood (probably suggested by Todd Haynes), Shirley Henderson and Zoe Kazan. We reported that the filmmaker was fleshing out a Western-themed project, so it looks like she'll be well-prepared for working in difficult terrain. »

This partisan politico-drama focuses on the Cuban missile crisis, with only a cursory glance in the direction of Havana and Moscow. With Kevin Costner in the starring role, we wouldn't expect anything else
Director: Roger Donaldson
Entertainment grade: B+
History grade: A–
The Cuban missile crisis of October 1962 was a nuclear stand-off between the United States and Ussr. The Soviets placed missiles in Cuba, so the Americans blockaded the island. For two weeks, there was a serious danger that the confrontation might result in a third – and potentially devastating – world war.

The film focuses on John F Kennedy's appointments secretary, Kenny O'Donnell (Kevin Costner). O'Donnell begins by establishing that he is an all-American hero, breakfasting with his 400 or so apple-cheeked children and flirting manfully with Jackie Kennedy. Though he was a member of Ex-Comm, the committee which advised Kennedy during the crisis, O'Donnell was a minor figure. It's conspicuously »

And by Spock I mean Leonard Nimoy, not Zachary Quinto – there’s no chance J. J. Abrams would leave out the logical half of the dynamic duo, but word comes from MovieWeb that Nimoy may not be in the expected sequel.
He told MovieWeb:
If J.J. asked me to come back, I would consider it. But I don’t think it is necessary, nor do I think that is part of J.J.’s plan.
It’s a gracious touch from such an iconic character, particularly as it was his presence in Abram’s fast paced blockbuster that gave it the necessary sense of legacy and gravitas. While it is a shame to think of Star Trek without Nimoy the new cast need to forge a path for themselves, so it makes sense.
Also when chatting with Bruce Greenwood MovieWeb asked him about Captain Pike’s role in the »

We were recently at the DVD launch party for the summer blockbuster Star Trek, which is currently available on DVD and Blu-ray shelves now. Among the many actors we spoke with at the event was Bruce Greenwood, who played Captain Pike in the film. He revealed that he'd like to appear in Star Trek 2, but isn't sure it will happen.
"I know they're writing the film right now, but I'm not sure if we'll see Pike or not," Greenwood said. "He was mainly there to bring Kirk aboard the Enterprise and it's hard to say if he'll be popping up in the sequel."
Greenwood also spoke about his history with the series and what he learned from his predecessors who played Captain Pike in the past.
"I did go back and look at Jeffrey Hunter's performance in the original series," Greenwood said about his preperation for the role. "This »

Paramount held a red carpet event for the DVD/Blu-Ray release of Star Trek on the 17th at the famous Griffith Observatory. It was a star studded event, but as with all red carpets, sometimes you get quite a few minutes with the stars, other times you get a minute before the publicist is sticking a knife in your shoulder telling you the star has to move on.Despite the limited time with some celebrities, I got a lot of good info on some of their upcoming projects. Oh, sure. We talked about the DVD a little bit and the special features, but we also got some info on the sequel and weighing the pros and cons of an appearance by Khan as the villain. Also got to talk to the creature designer for Star Trek Neville Page, who is also working on Tron: Legacy, Avatar and Green Lantern. Producer »

Franchise reboots have become a go-to moneymaker for Hollywood in the past few decades. Find a popular, but overexposed series of films that has all but breathed its last breath. Add a new cast of pretty, bankable faces, updated and explosive special effects and a script that toes the line between tribute and parody, stir, and hope audiences will show up for the results. But nine times out of ten, a franchise reboot pales in comparison to the original and succeeds at little but making the audience long for the movies they initially loved. Thankfully, J.J. Abrams' reboot of the 'Star Trek' saga avoids all of these pitfalls and emerges as a smart, fun and original version of the world of the U.S.S. Enterprise.
Star Trek starts from the very beginning as George Kirk is named captain of the Enterprise for 12 minutes before a tragic »

"J.J. leads with a sense of humor," Quinto adds, "and that makes it a lot easier when you're undertaking something as large as this project was." So who had Quinto cracking up the most? "Simon Pegg »

Space. The Final Frontier. A place few were willing to venture with the last two Star Trek: The Next Generation helmed films. On virtual life support, J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot collaborators reinvented the iconic franchise into something hardened Star Trek fans and casual moviegoers without an ounce of prior interest in the series could equally digest and enjoy. His efforts carried Star Trek into a new frontier of success and riches at the 2009 box office, to a place where Paramount's treatment of the Blu-ray Disc release should . and marvelously does - fall into the esteemed category of exemplary.
Star Trek's reboot begins with a huge bang, a knockout prologue that chronicles the birth of James T. Kirk and the death of his father, a Starship Captain (for twelve minutes), all during a surprise attack by a renegade Romulan Nero (Eric Bana). Flash forward a quarter of a »

The cast for Jay Roach's comedy Dinner with Schmucks is getting downright epic. The French remake already stars Steve Carell as the world's worst dinner guest and Paul Rudd as the guy who invites him, and over the past few weeks we've seen names like Zach Galifianakis, British actress Lucy Punch, Stephanie Szostak, Bruce Greenwood and another Brit, David Walliams, added to the crew. Now they've picked up a guy who's been tragically underused in movies lately. Ron Livingston, who popped up memorably but thanklessly in this summer's The Time Traveler's Wife, will join the dinner party in an unknown role, at least unknown by Variety. The story revolves around a group of friends who invite over, well, schmucks in order to make fun of them, and I can easily see Livingston as one of the regular guests ready to lay into whichever poor sap they invite over next. »

Ron Livingston is the beating heart of Mike Judge’s Office Space, a movie that has transcended cult status and is pretty much one of the finest comedies to be released in the 1990s. He’s also pretty notable for the role of Captain Lewis Nixon in Band of Brothers on HBO.
Now, he’ll be joining director Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents) for his new film Dinner for Schmucks.
According to Variety, the film “is an adaptation of the Francis Veber-helmed French film Le dinner de cons, in which a group of bourgeois friends regularly invite the biggest schmucks to dinner to ridicule them.”
The cast that’s shaping up for this film is phenomenal. It’ll be headed up by I Love You, Man’s Paul Rudd and The Office’s Steve Carell, who of course acted together in The 40-Year-Old-Virgin. They’ll be joined »

While we assumed we had already received our monthly casting fix for “Dinner for Schmucks” with the news of Bruce Greenwood and David Walliams joining the cast a couple weeks ago, it turns out that everyone wants a seat at the table for Jay Roach’s upcoming comedy, “Dinner for Schmucks”. The latest addition to the party is Ron Livingston who joins Greenwood, Walliams, and leads Zach Galifianakis, Paul Rudd, and Steve Carell. Hit the jump for more details.
“Schmucks” is a remake of the 1998 French film “Le dîner de cons,” (released in the U.S. as “The Dinner Game”) where a group of jerks have a weekly dinner where each asshole brings the dumbest person they can find and whoever has the dumbest guest wins. Looking at these six cast members, the challenge is in discerning who’s playing a dummy and who’s playing an asshole (of course »

Dinner for Schmucks is already a collection of amazing comedic talent-- Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Zach Galifianakis are already playing the lead roles, and up and comers Lucy Punch and Stephanie Szostak are on board too. But someone has to play the snarling bad guys somewhere, and who better to do it with a smile than Bruce Greenwood? Greenwood, whom we all fell in love with over again in Star Trek, will play a billionaire investor, while British comedian David Walliams plays a Swiss banker whom Rudd's character is trying to impress. Variety doesn't make it clear how these financial dealings work into a plot about guys who have weekly dinner parties with terrible guests, but I guess there has to be some kind of plot other that Carell, Rudd and Galifianakis making each other laugh. »
