I hope I don't go out therer and freeze my tail off just to see...I don't know, a documentary about a former Pakistani prime minister or something silly like that. Here's the lineup so far: Premieres To showcase the diversity to contemporary independent cinema, the Sundance Film Festival Premieres section offers the latest work from American and international directors as well as world premieres of highly anticipated films. I feel a special bond with the Sundance Film Festival. Not because I’ve been there, but because the guy in charge of it this year, John Cooper, shares my name. Because we share this bond, I feel that I’m able to take license in referring to the man as Coop for the rest of this article.
For the annual event held in Park City, Utah from January 21-31, thousands of films are submitted and screened — this year, 3,724 films were viewed by the festival’s ten programmers. I wonder when they slept.
Coop has high hopes for the festival as a whole:
“We may even be going into a golden age for independent films, in that the technology will make it possible for the films to be made and for audiences to see them. The industry is going through a major evolutionary stage right now, there’s no doubt about that, »

Sundance Institute has announced the line-up of films competing for jury prizes during the 26th Sundance Film Festival's U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions. Among the wide-ranging list of movies selected for the competitions are Kristen Stewart-starring drama "Welcome to the Rileys", family drama "Blue Valentine" starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, and James Franco's non-fiction drama "Howl".
Speaking about this year's selection, newly installed director of the festival John Cooper said, "A lot of our films are hard to describe, and that's very attractive." He then added, "We put marketability on the sidelines for a while and said, 'Let's just go for films that were highly original and pushed the envelope.'"
The 2010 Sundance Film Festival that runs January 21-31 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah will include new non-competitive categories called Spotlight, for what are viewed as particularly audience-friendly films, »

The Sundance Film Festival has unveiled the lineup of films playing in competition from January 21 through January 31, 2010. The early fest typically debuts some of the best films the year has to offer, like 2009’s Precious, (500) Days of Summer, and Moon.
I’m bummed I won’t be in Park City, Utah next month because the lineup looks great, and these are just the films playing in competition. Here’s a few that stood out to me:
The Allen Ginsberg trial film Howl starring James Franco, a documentary by Alex Gibney (a truly great filmmaker) on Jack Abramoff, Mark Ruffalo’s directorial debut Sympathy for Delicious, a doc about Joan Rivers, the directorial debut of “How I Met Your Mother” star Josh Radnor titled Happythankyoumoreplease (I wrote a glowing script review of it here), Hesher with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman, and Blue Valentine starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.

Photo: Sundance Today the Sundance Institute announced the films that will be in competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival in both the U.S. and International dramatic and documentary categories. The festival will run from January 21-31 in Park City, Utah. There are a few changes this year as there will be no opening-night picture and the festival will take select festival films to eight cities during as the fest plays out.
Last year notable films such as this year's major Oscar contenders Precious and An Education debuted at Sundance 2009 as did audience and critical favorite (500) Days of Summer.
As for this year's crop I have highlighted a few titles among the list below in red, but I have primarily done so considering the names attached to the pictures not necessarily based on any advanced buzz I've heard around any of the films. Names to look out for include Ryan Gosling, »

The Sundance Film Festival is where some of the great films of the year will get their first viewings, and if you don’t believe me, here’s just some of the great films this year that made their debut at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival: Precious, World’s Greatest Dad, Big Fan, Bronson, Moon and even (500) Days of Summer, which I didn’t care for but made a big splash.
The festival is where buzz starts happening and now Sundance has released the list of which films will be in competition for 2010. Keep in mind that there are plenty of other films which play out of competition and can be just as great. But some of the big names fighting for the crown are the Allen Ginsberg obscenity trial film Howl starring General Hospital’s James Franco, Hesher starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo’s directing debut Sympathy for Delicious, »

Nick Cassavetes likes plucking heartstrings and he’s not afraid to dig into your chest to do so. Unfortunately, the digging is sort of a laborious process and it can take Cassavetes an hour or two to even scratch the surface. Maybe you were swept away by his romantic tale of Alzheimers-afflicted love in The Notebook? It did have a surprisingly strong cast (Rachel McAdams, Ryan Gosling and James Garner) and whether you like the movie or not, chances are your body either produces a healthy share of estrogen and you loved the film or your body doesn’t but someone from the first category insisted you watch it. Yet, he also directed Alpha Dog, so his tendencies towards emotionally manipulative clearly aren’t his only option. My Sister’s Keeper, however, plays directly into his manipulative side; if you’re a crier then you’ll get that cathartic sobbing »

John Hillcoat's The Road didn't make a huge impression in its first weekend in theaters, making a little over $1.5 million in limited release. Hard to blame Hillcoat, though, for a movie that people expected to see a year ago, even if it does have a few problems.
He's moving on, however, and by the cast he's assembled for his next film, it's clear that Hillcoat will come out of The Road with a higher profile and probably more clout. Collider say a new poster for the adaptation of Matt Bondurant's The Wettest County in the World at the American Film Market, which touts a brand new star. Amy Adams will join Ryan Gosling and Shia Labeouf in the Depression-era saga now called The Promised Land.
Gosling and LeBeouf will play bootleggers and brothers in the film, and Collider notes there's not a major female character in the book, »

Given his deft handling of Cormac McCarthy's novel for the big-screen version of The Road, John Hillcoat is earning plenty of deserved attention as a director to watch. Even as The Road was beginning its run in theaters, Hillcoat's next film was getting promoted at the American Film Market-- and subtly, there was some casting news there too. JoBlo picked up on some info in a poster snagged by Collider at Afm, which confirms that Hillcoat's next film will be called The Promised Land, a change from the title of the novel he's adapting, Matt Bondurant's The Wettest County in the World. While it had been previously reported that Scarlett Johansson would star alongside Shia Labeouf and Ryan Gosling as a pair of bootlegging brothers during the Depression, it now seems that Amy Adams has taken her place. The real question remains which role Adams will play, given »

Earlier today, JoBlo posted some interesting news regarding the next project from Australian director John Hillcoat, who helmed The Road and The Proposition. According to a newly released poster, the title of the project is The Promised Land. Shia Labeouf and Ryan Gosling are confirmed as cast members. However, Scarlett Johansson, who was also expected to star, is missing from the list. In her place is Amy Adams, who was nominated for an Oscar for her work in Doubt and most recently starred in Julie & Julia.
Nick Cave is adapting the screenplay from Matt Bondurant's novel The Wettest County in the World, which tells the story of a family of thieves and smugglers in Virginia during the Great Depression. The novel is based in part on the experiences of Bondurant's family.
While Labeouf and Gosling will likely play brother members of the "Bondurant Boys," it's unclear what Adams's role will be. »

As director John Hillcoat continues to impress people with his adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's The Road, he's looking to set up his next film, an adaptation of Matt Bondurant's "The Wettest County in the World." The original scoop was that Shia Labeouf, Ryan Gosling and Scarlett Johansson were all attached to the film and that seems partly correct. Collider saw a promo poster for the production at Afm and it reveals the film has a new title and a new star. The poster reveals a... »

If you're into dull knifes and further endurance tests, then you might want to seek out Danny Boyle's next project which comes with the title/amount of time mountaineer Aron Ralston's right forearm was pinned under a boulder. - Not sure about you cinephiles out there, but I feel as if Kevin MacDonald's Touching the Void said everything that had to be said on why ice/rock climbing isn't all it's cracked up to be. Though the The Road only just recently hit theaters over this past Thanksgiving weekend, director John Hillcoat has already been hard at work on a variety of different projects. Though we pointed out a few of them back in September, one that we overlooked is a potential adaptation of The Wettest County in the World, scripted by Nick Cave and based on the novel of the same name by Matt Bondurant. Now, through deductive logic, Collider reveals that the film is now called The Promised Land, via a plain promo poster on display at the American Film Market listing actors Shia LeBeouf, Ryan Gosling and Amy Adams. However, the catch (as SlashFilm carefully observed) is the tiny print at the bottom of the poster that states "credits not contractual." So while it sounds like the rumors earlier this month have some validity, nothing is certain yet, and that includes the »
