The American Film Market, currently going on in Los Angeles, is where a lot of indie movies have the opportunity to pitch themselves to potential buyers, trotting out whatever materials they've got to make their movie look like the next big thing. But when you hear "indie," don't assume it's all no-name actors acting on crappy digital video-- the movies up for sale this year include the likes of Ben Stiller, Mark Wahlberg, Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst, George Clooney and Channing Tatum, with Mike Leigh, Sofia Coppola, Robert Redford and plenty more behind the camera. Collider visited Afm and came away with stills and synopses for lots of these projects, many of which are still in production. You can see the first batch here and the second batch here, and below are a few of the most interesting shots, along with the synopses. Look out in the next few days »

Afm* fun continues with the first images and full synopses for All Good Things starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst, Pirhana 3D starring Elisabeth Shue and Richard Dreyfuss, Shanghai starring John Cusack and Ken Watanbe, and The Fighter starring Christian Bale, Mark Wahlberg, and Amy Adams. These are all films that should be on your radar because there’s a good chance that these films will be getting some major marketing when they hit theaters.
I write and read about films every day and with the exception of The Fighter, these films weren’t really on my radar. After reading the synopses and seeing some shots from these movies, I’ll definitely be on the lookout for further news about them. Hit the jump to check out debut photos and what you need to know about these upcoming flicks.

Rumor on who is going to play the villain in "Spider-Man 4" has spread out. "Mean Girls" star Rachel McAdams, as reported by Mania, is said to be the strong contender to play Felicia Hardy who is most known as Spider-Man's villain, Black Cat. There is no confirmation yet that 31-year old Rachel is set as the feline villain, but it is said that she has met the producer concerning the role she's going to play.
Black Cat herself is a skilled cat burglar. The character was first created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Keith Pollard and appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #194 which was published in July 1979. The character Felicia Hardy first wears the Black Cat costume in her attempt to release her father from jail. On the same night, she meets the web-slinging superhero and becomes obsessed.
"Spider-Man 4" will be directed by Sam Raimi. Tobey Maguire »

Fox Searchlight and director Danny Boyle have worked out a deal for their next collaboration and the anticipated follow-up to Oscar winner Slumdog Millionaire.
Titled 127 Hours, the film will tell the survival story of mountain climber Aron Ralston who had his right arm pinned under a rock for five days. He ultimately used a dull knife to amputate the limb and crawl to safety. It’s expected for a late 2010 release, presumably for awards season.
Boyle plans to direct and has already written a treatment, but Slumdog screenwriter Simon Beaufoy will re-team with him to flesh out the script. The director is considering options for Ralston, but so far only Ryan Gosling has been named in rumors, according to Variety.
In an interview with indiewire, Boyle said he wants to shoot the first hour entirely free of dialogue. Ralston was climbing alone during the 2003 incident, so there won’t be any witty exchanges added in. »

2008 was quite a year for Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle, and as he has been winding down from the roller coaster ride that was Slumdog Millionaire, he has also taken some time to carefully choose his next project. He had been attached to possibly direct a handful of projects including Johannesburg (a movie about South Africa based on the novel Ponte City by Norman Ohler), and Solomon Grundy (which has since been shelved due to its similarity to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). There had also been rumours [1] about him possibly returning to direct another sequel to 28 Days Later. This week, Variety [2] has confirmed that his next movie will be none of these. Instead, Boyle will helm a project called 127 Hours, about a mountain climber named Aron Ralston. Ralston had a pretty harrowing experience during a climb in Utah in May, 2003, when his right arm was accidentally pinned under a boulder. »

Some smart people on the Internet had deduced this a few weeks ago, but now it's official-- Danny Boyle's next project will be 127 Hours, a movie about Aron Ralston, a rock climber who cut off his own arm in the Utah wilderness after it was pinned underneath a boulder. And you thought the kid jumping into the poop in Slumdog Millionaire was bad! Despite rumors that Ryan Gosling would play the lead role of the fearless climber, Variety reports that they're still in the casting process, for a role that probably every actor south of 35 is dying to play. For extra good luck Boyle is reuniting with screenwriter Simon Beaufoy and producer Christian Colson, less than a year after all three won Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire. Fox Searchlight, of course, will also distribute. It seems like a smart move for Boyle, who's never made a movie exactly like the »

- Not sure about you cinephiles out there, but I feel as if Kevin MacDonald's Touching the Void said everything that had to be said on why ice/rock climbing isn't all it's cracked up to be. But if you're into dull knifes and further endurance tests, then you might want to seek out Danny Boyle's next project which comes with the title/amount of time mountaineer Aron Ralston's right forearm was pinned under a boulder. 127 Hours will begin production shortly for a late 2010 release by Fox Searchlight who is financing the project with Pathe. Simon Beaufoy should take over from the treatment written by Boyle. Those following the project's development at ThePlaylist know that Ryan Gosling has been mentioned as the possible candidate to play Ralston. We want to see cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle join the pic as well. ... »

Hard to believe but the oft shirtless and sometime drunken bongo playing Matthew McConaughey turns 40 today. He still looks mighty fine, but you know how Hollywood likes shiny new things — so we were wondering who might succeed him as the undisputed king of Hollywood romantic comedies.
Speaking of bongo playing...
There are so many handsome actors out there to choose from, but we decided to take this thing seriously and only consider actors who are 1) under 40, and 2) are already in the movies. (That means current soap actors, Broadway performers and the like are out of the running.)
"No Broadway performers you say? Thank God,
I thought I was going to have to go up against Nick Adams."
Using those parameters we came up with 13 potential chick flick friendly movie star successors to Matthew McConaughey. You can either peruse the following pages for a photo gallery of our worthy usurpers to »

Adolescence can be a crazy time. Focus Features' latest film shows exactly how true that statement can be.
Focus has announced plans to start production on "It's Kind of a Funny Story," a movie by filmmaking team Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, adapted from Ned Vizzini's novel of the same name. Production - overseen by Misher Films' Kevin Misher and Wayfare Entertainment's Ben Browning, Michael Maher and Peter Rawlinson - will begin in early December in New York. Major casting for the project has also begun. Among the actors already attached are Keir Gilchrist, Emma Roberts, Zach Galifianakis, Lauren Graham, Jim Gaffigan, Zoe Kravitz, Viola Davis and Aasif Mandvi.
The story follows Gilchrist as 16-year-old Craig, who decides to get away from his hectic teenage life and his parents (Graham, Gaffigan) by committing himself to a mental health clinic, only to wind up in the adult ward rather than the children's. »

"Transformers" star Shia Labeouf and "The Notebook" actor Ryan Gosling are a step closer to land roles in "The Wettest County in the World". The news was spilled by director John Hillcoat, who has been circling the upcoming movie project. Being interviewed by Atomic Popcorn about his latest film "The Road", he has given few updates about the thriller film.
"Yeah it's west Virginia, moonshine, backwoods, and Prohibition," said John when describing what the movie is about. "Nick Cave has written the script and we've got a phenomenal cast. Hopefully, but - it's really tough out there." Asked who has been attached to the film, the helmer answered, "Um... Ryan Gosling and Shia Labeouf." Realizing that he has talked too much about the progress of the movie, he then told Atomic Popcorn, "But yeah, I shouldn't really talk about it cause it's in the middle of all sorts of stuff. »

A month or so ago it came to light that The Road's John Hillcoat was hoping to get an adaptation of Matt Bondurant's prohibition-set novel The Wettest Country in the World up and running. No paperwork had been signed, but he was reported as having the support of Ryan Gosling, Shia Labeouf, Scarlet Johansson and Paul Dano, who all wanted to be in it.Along with confirmation of that from the horse's mouth (well, Hillcoat's) Atomic Popcorn have just learned that a script has already been written, by a certain Mr Nick Cave.Cave dabbled with film as an actor in the 90s, with roles in Johnny Suede and Ghosts of the Civil Dead, but after a long hiatus during which he seemed to leave the cinema well alone, he's made a slight return in recent years, writing the music, along with constant collaborator and Bad Seed Warren Ellis, »

John Hillcoat is the director of The Road, which has had a publicly difficult path from page to screen. But that hasn't stopped him from lining up a few potential follow-ups. We've talked about these more than once over the last months, but now that Hillcoat is doing domestic publicity for The Road a few more details are starting to trickle out. After the break, we've got positive news on casting for his adaptation of The Wettest County in the World, and his plans for Nick Cave's recent novel The Death of Bunny Munro. AtomicPopcorn spoke briefly with Hillcoat, who confirmed previous word that Shia Labeouf and Ryan Gosling are interested in his Wettest County adaptation. He describes the film as "West Virginia, moonshine, backwoods, and Prohibition. Nick Cave has written the script and we’ve got a phenomenal cast. Hopefully, but — it’s really tough out there." It must be hard for director John Hillcoat, whose film The Road has been pushed back and forth by The Weinstein Company more times than any other film since, well, The Weinsteins did it to Kyle Newman's Fanboys. And for shame, I say, as The Road is a great film and a wonderfully true adaptation of one of Cormac McCarthy's most iconic works. But even with the film's quality and almost certain critical praise, it still must be hard for a guy like Hillcoat to move forward on another project without a bit of doubt in his mind. That said, the folks at Atomic Popcorn are reporting some casting for one future project that I'd like to see Hillcoat take on. Titled The Wettest County in the World and based on a novel by Matt Bondurant, this family saga follows the Bondurants, bootlegging brothers runnin’ stills, runnin’ loads, and »

Yesterday I had the great opportunity of speaking to director John Hillcoat to discuss his latest film The Road. During this period John was nice enough to confirm casting on The Wettest County in The World and that The Death of Bunny Munro will most likely be made into a television series.
I know you’re circling a few projects right now, can you give a few updates?
John Hillcoat: Well, one touchwood that’s most likely to…
The Wettest County?
John Hillcoat: Yeah it’s west Virginia, moonshine, backwoods, and Prohibition. Nick Cave has written the script and we’ve got a phenomenal cast. Hopefully, but — it’s really tough out there.
Who’s attached to that?
John Hillcoat: Um… Ryan Gosling and Shia Labeouf. But yeah, I shouldn’t really talk about it cause it’s in the middle of all sorts of stuff.

Even though not all that many people say Half-Nelson, the film that officially announced what kind of talent Ryan Gosling as, even fewer saw Sugar, last year's film by the writer-director combo Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden. However, the pair does have a very promising film coming together for Focus Features called It's Kind of a Funny Story.
The studio (via MovieWeb) announced that principal casting has been completed, and it goes a little something like this: Zach Galifianakis, Emma Roberts, Oscar nominee Viola Davis, Jim Gaffigan, Lauren Graham, Zoe Kravitz, and Aasif Mandvi. Man, Galifianakis has had the best year, hasn't he? From The Hangover to casting news for about half a dozen movies (or so it seems) all since June.
It's Kind of a Funny Story is based on the 2006 novel by Ned Vizzini, and it will begin filming next month in someplace called New York City. Here's the official synopsis, »

Ryan Gosling kept his head covered yesterday while out for a walk in La. He's home again after a short tour of the country with Dead Man's Bones, which we checked out earlier this week in Sf - check out his tactful response to some rather inappropriate comments from the ladies in the crowd. Ryan and his bandmate Zach Shields apparently love a good costume, so appropriately enough, they're wrapping things up with one last show tomorrow night. View 5 Photos › »

Jim Sturgess, last seen onscreen in the indie drama Crossing Over, has joined Kirsten Dunst to star in Upside Down, a sci-fi film set up at Onyx Films. According to Variety, Upside Down will have a Romeo and Juliet vibe.
Cinematographer Juan Diego Solanas wrote the script and will be directing the film. Shooting is reportedly set to begin in February in Montreal. If so, this may be a tight squeeze for Dunst who will be starting work on Spider-Man 4 in March, if the fourth Spider-Man movie continues on its current schedule.
Dunst recently wrapped work on All Good Things with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Ryan Gosling and based on an unsolved New York murder case. Sturgess just completed work on Peter Weir's The Way Back, a fact-based drama set in Siberia. Sturgess is also part of the voice cast of Zack Snyder's first animated film, Guardians of Ga'Hoole, »
