Nothing better than a planned family gathering getting all evil because of an ancient pact your elders made with a sprit of their ancestor, know what I mean? That’s what goes down in Robert O’Hara’s freshman feature effort, My Place in the Horror, which Black Film is reporting has just added voiceover master Keith David and easy-on-the-eyes Golden Brooks to its cast.
The story concerns a black family’s reunion that turns bad when the patriarchs of the family make good on a promise made to one of their ancestors, and the younger generation is forced to make the ultimate sacrifice, which I can only assume means themselves. They won’t go quietly into that good night, though, believe me.
Cameras will roll on My Place in the Horror in New Mexico next month; keep your eyes on Dread Central for more details on it as we bring them to light!

It's the new film from author Neil "godlike genius" Gaiman and stop-motion direct Henry "godlike genius" Selick, so you just know we're excited about Coraline. Which means that we're doubly excited to bring you the brand-new international poster for the film, showcasing its quirky, spooky look. The story follows the titular Coraline, an ordinary girl who moves into a flat in a new house with her parents. Quirky strangers live in the other two flats of the house - retired actresses Miss Forcible and Miss Spark next door, and retired circus performer Mr Bobo upstairs. But it's in a fourth part, behind an apparently bricked up door, that Coraline finds a fantasy world inhabited by her Other Mother and Other Father, who initially seem better than the real thing, but are terribly anxious to convince her to stay with them instead of returning home. The film's voice cast includes Dakota Fanning as Coraline,

Moving on from her sexually promiscuous role of Samantha Jones in "Sex and the City", Kim Cattrall is going to take on an even raunchier character. Giving more on the 52-year-old's character in "Miss January", reports claimed that her 1980s cinema siren part is actually an '80s porn star named Monica Velour.
While Cinematical pointed out that Cattrall's character has been said to have "no gag reflex", MTV noted that the Velour is now known by the name of Linda. In "Miss January" itself, the character has been described to be a 50-year-old single mother who is in the middle of a child custody battle.
"Miss January" is a comedy movie from director/writer Keith Bearden. Starring also Dustin Ingram, Brian Dennehy, Keith David and Sam McMurray, the film is produced by Gary Gilbert and Jordan Horowitz for 2009 release. Currently undergoing production, it will tell the story of a

Not long ago we told you how Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall had signed on to star in a new film called Miss January. In the original article over at Variety, they described her character as a "1980s cinema siren who is now a 50-year-old single mother in the middle of a child custody battle." Now, what they don't tell you -- and what a little birdie just whispered to Cinematical -- was that Cattrall's "1980s cinema siren" is actually a 1980s porn star named Monica Velour. Our tipster adds that "she has no gag reflex." Well okay then.
Miss January is currently in production, and also stars Brian Dennehy, Dustin Ingram and Keith David. Unfortunately for all you Cattrall stalkers out there, the film takes place years after the character was a porn star, and so chances are the sex in this city will be rather tame

Now this is what I call a well-stacked site! Sure it may not be the most spooky of places right off the bat, but the official Coraline site has got a lot of goodies to explore and eventually you’re bound to find something that gives you the chills.
The new film from Nightmare Before Christmas director Henry Selick is the story of Coraline, a young girl forced to move to a new place that is far too big and far too boring for here vivid imagination. She finds a secret door that leads to an alternate version of her reality where everything is just as she wishes it were, but there’s something very nefarious going on with her “new mother”.
Not all the content is up yet, but there’s still plenty to do and if nothing else, the soothing voice of Keith David will keep you warm.

Once you get a taste of Smart People, deal with Eddie Murphy's Nowhereland, take on a stalkerific Sandra Bullock, and then steal Kate Hudson's work, it's time to get into some dark drama.
Variety reports that Thomas Haden Church has signed on to star in a new indie film called Don McKay, with the likes of Elisabeth Shue, Melissa Leo, M. Emmet Walsh, and Keith David. Coming from writer/director Jake Goldberger and shielded by a Screen Actors Guild waiver, the $5 million project just started production in Boston. The film focuses on a man who leaves his hometown after a tragedy forces him to do so. Twenty-five years later, he comes back when he hears that "his long-lost love is dying." Not surprisingly, his return spins "a web of confusion, deceit, and murder." Old secrets never die in the movie world.

While most of the world had its eyes on Beijing and the Olympics this past week, DC's intrepid reporters Butane, Syxx, Foy, Uc, and yours truly have been scouring the globe for genre news and views to send your way. Although I'm not following the Games much myself, I thought for this August 9-15, 2008, Weekly Wrap-Up, I'd join the fray and employ an international theme focusing on projects outside the good ol' Us of A.
Considering this is also the week that brought news of a possible Bigfoot being found, it makes sense to start with a nature-run-amok item. Coming soon from Korea is Chaw, about a man-eating, mutant boar with a bad attitude. The producers are promising some realistic, frightening effects despite the creature being mostly CG, and we'll see how they do. Rogue managed to use CG successfully; hopefully Chaw will too.
Speaking of that big lovable croc-a-palooza
