Deepa Mehta to make film on Rushdie's 'Midnight's Children'

New York, Acclaimed Indian-Canadian film director Deepa Mehta will make a film based on "Midnight's Children", the Booker of Bookers Prize winning novel of India-born British author Salman Rushdie. The writer himself will appear in the film, which is expected to be completed by 2010, Rushdie and Mehta announced at a press conference here Thursday.Actress and social activist Shabana Azmai has agreed to act in the proposed film, so has Seema Biswas of the "Bandit Queen" fame. Actress Nandita Das will also be in the cast. Making the announcement on the sidelines of the ongoing Miaac Film Festival, Rushdie and Mehta said they will be co-writing the screenplay on the novel, which is spread over 600 pages. Rahul Bose was conferred with Eminent Citizen Journalist Award, held on October 16 at New Delhi. Bose was honored with the award for openly voicing against issues such as terrorism and his active involvement and support for various other social causes. The entries for the various categories were shortlisted by a group of eminent jury members, including Kiran Bedi, Prasoon Joshi, Madhu Trehan, Arvind Kejriwal, Nandita Das, Neelam Krishnamoorthy and Rakeysh Mehra.

In an unusual act of altruism only found at Telluride, author Salman Rushdie has championed the small Indian movie, Firaaq. He is introducing the screenings with the first-time director and acclaimed actress Nandita Das, and he's conducting the Q&A afterward. Asian and Spanish titles announced for Tiff 08

A host of both Asian and Spanish-language films have been announced as part of the Toronto International Film Festival 08 lineup and they are scattered over all different parts of the program. Anime fans will be glad to hear Mamoru Oshii's The Sky Crawlers will be having it's North American premier in the Visions section. Plastic City, the joint Brazilian/China effort about the mafia and salvation will also be getting it's North American prem. One of the most interesting sounding film's on the list is Albert Serra's Birdsong (El Cant dels ocells) which is a reinterpretation of the biblical journey of the three wisemen and their search for the Messiah. It's shot with only natural lighting. Check out the whole list following!ww
