This week saw the too-rapid close of the Neil Simon revival Brighton Beach Memoirs on Broadway, as well as the opening of three Off Broadway productions: The Understudy, starring Justin Kirk, Julie White, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar (at left); Idiot Savant with Willem Dafoe; and Nightingale with Lynn Redgrave. Melissa Bernardo gave a B+ to The Understudy but dinged it for the cast's somewhat mixed on-stage chemistry. Thom Geier calls Idiot Savant "one strange, head-scratching evening" and gives it a C+. As for Lynn Redgrave's one-woman show, Nightingale, I gave it a C and took issue with the production because »

Last week, at the stage door of his Broadway plan, "A Steady Rain", Daniel Craig first revealed to fans that shooting on the 23rd James Bond film would kick off in late 2010.
Now, speaking recently on Regis & Kelly, Craig confirmed that filming will start at the end of 2010, with a 2011 release date being scheduled.
"The plan is to start shooting the next one at the end of next year," Craig said on Regis & Kelly, "so it'll be ready for 2011. We've got a lot of work to do."
Bond 23 is being written by returning Bond scribes Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, and The Queen and Frost/Nixon writer Peter Morgan. David Arnold will compose the score for this, his sixth 007 movie.
Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson will, of course, return as producers, but have yet to determine a director.

Daniel Craig is stepping off of the Broadway stage and heading back to the big screen–but not just in the role of James Bond.
Craig is moving from Pinewood Shepperton’s studio in Britain, where the James Bond films are shot, to the company’s Toronto location to star in Jim Sheridan’s psychological thriller Dream House.
In the film, Craig will be playing the role of a man whose family moves to a small town, only to find out they’ve moved into a house that’s being haunted by its previous inhabitants.
Although the Morgan Creek production is being shot at Pinewood Shepperton’s Toronto studio, the parent company in Britain will earn fees based on the revenue performance of the Toronto studios.
Dream House is scheduled to be shot from January 25th to April 9th, 2010.

Storms The Walls Of Castle
By
Actress Stana Katic is on a roll. After scoring supporting roles in two of last year’s highest-profile films, Quantum of Solace and The Spirit, the statuesque Canadian stunner landed the female lead in ABC’s new police drama/romantic comedy Castle, playing Detective Kate Beckett, a tough-as-nails NYPD officer who finds herself with the regrettable assignment of allowing cocky, best-selling crime novelist Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) to shadow her for research on his next book. Not only does she find that Castle’s creative instincts for the criminal mind help her solve some of the city’s most challenging murders, she finds her tough exterior melting under Castle’s considerable charms. The show airs Monday nights on ABC.

"Iron Chef" Mark Dacascos tried -- and failed -- to cook up some magic on the dance floor with Anna Trebunskaya while partner Lacey Schwimmer was on sick leave with the flu.
"My guess is either eliminated or dancing the knockout dance," Mark told "Extra" after his performance, which Carrie Ann called "a mess." Dacascos and Trebunskaya found themselves at the bottom after the group and individual dances last night.

With the likes of Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), James Bond (Daniel Craig) and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) celebrated for their sophisticated style; Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) and Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) setting young hearts a-flutter with their teen wear and rugged he-men like Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) flashing their muscles, it’s easy to pick a movie mentor to copy the fashions of. But a bearded goofball carrying around a strange baby? Yes, we’re talking about Alan, Zach Galifianakis’s character from this year’s break-out hit, The Hangover, who has become one of the pin-ups of 2009. Not content with coming in seventh on Fandango.com’s poll into this year’s Halloween movie costumes (see Related Content, right), his much-loved Human Tree T-Shirt has become an official style sensation. »

Chosen as the Sexiest Man Alive of 2008 by People magazine, Hugh Jackman has no hesitation to tell the publication that he wants to reclaim the title for this year. When asked by People on who he thinks deserves to be named the next Sexiest Man Alive, he said "Me! I want to be the first to have it back to back, buddy", while attending the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Concert on Friday, October 30 in New York.
"That would be fantastic!" he gushed. The 41-year-old movie hunk, however, didn't mention the reason why he deserves the predicate one more time. He instead shared with the weekly magazine about the pressure the title has caused him, saying "I thought there were thousands of other guys that deserved it, but it's been a great year. But now the pressures off. I can be a slob again."

As the one-year reign of Hugh Jackman as People's Sexiest Man Alive winds down, it's time to pass the crown to a new deserving hunk. So who does the Australian screen star, Oscar host and current Broadway leading man want to see take the title next? "Me! I want to be the first to have it back to back, buddy," Jackman, 41, told People's reporter on Friday in New York, while attending the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Concert (set to air on HBO Nov. 29). So Ricky Gervais has signed to host the Golden Globes, which means the pressure is on the Oscars to come up with a host or hosts equally as stellar. Or interesting. Or compelling.
One star who has removed himself from the running is last year's host, Hugh Jackman. He will not return as Oscar host when the show airs on ABC, March 7.
He's currently on Broadway in a play -- with 007 Daniel Craig -- and he "quietly turned down the job" according to sources. It's not because he was a bomb emceeing the proceedings either. He didn't do the "Oprah, Uma, Uma, Oprah" joke nor did he trip on his shoelaces in the opening number. Quite the contrary, in fact. Hugh Jackman was a perfectly fine host.
But he doesn't want to do it in 2010. Maybe he doesn't want to push his luck? Maybe he just doesn't want to work that hard. »

This week saw the opening of two new Broadway productions, both revivals: The Neil Simon Plays: Brighton Beach Memoirs, a comedy-drama starring former Roseanne star Laurie Metcalf (left), which I described as "a fine revival, easily the best show of a young Broadway season," and the musical Finian's Rainbow, which Tanner Stransky called "an odd, farcical muscial" that is "well cast and smartly performed." Disappointing news for everyone who enjoyed Hugh Jackman's performance as this past year's Oscar host: Variety confirms that the 41-year-old, Aussie star will not reprise the role next year. The upside is that even though Jackman won't be the main attraction when next year's award show broadcasts on March 7, he may host in the future.
For now, he's concentrating on completing his role in the Broadway show A Steady Rain, in which he stars opposite Daniel Craig. The show wraps up on December 6, at which point Jackman will begin preparations for his role as a boxer and promoter in the sci-fi action thriller Real Steel. The movie is being directed by Night at the Museum's Shawn Levy and takes place in a future where human fighters have been replaced by robots.

Despite earning rave reviews for his hosting duties, a popular actor won't host the movie industry's biggest award event next year. According to Variety, Hugh Jackman will not be hosting the 2010 Academy Awards.
Jackman, who is currently starring in the Broadway play "A Steady Rain" alongside Daniel Craig, had reportedly turned down the offer in the past few weeks. Jackman won't rule out ever hosting the awards gala again, but it was said that he didn't want to host the ceremony for two years in a row.
The 82nd Annual Academy Awards will air on March 7 and will be produced by Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman.
