Review: "RocknRolla"

12 November 2008 7:52 AM, PST | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Seen on: November 1, 2008

The players: Director: Guy Ritchie, Writer: Guy Ritchie, Cast: Gerard Butler, Tom Wilkinson, Thandie Newton, Idris Elba, Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges, Mark Strong

Facts of interest: None.

The plot: A lot of money and a valuable painting are up for grabs in London, and everybody in the city's underground world seems to be after the same thing.

Our thoughts: Boys will be boys, even when they’re men who haven’t been boys for a very long time. They like to get their guns out and smack ‘em around in the other boys’ faces, all in an effort to prove who’s the baddest boy on the playground. It doesn’t matter to them that the playground has progressed into the entire city or that the guns have gone from plastic toys to the real deal.

It's all dead bodies and ravers behind the scenes of scifi actioner Game

3 November 2008 2:20 PM, PST | From QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news

Think you know what to expect from Gerard Butler's upcoming scifi actioner Game? Think again... we've been hearing rumors of some strangeness going on behind the scenes so we went looking for proof. Well we found some strange images indeed.

Between Hookah smocking ravers, apocalyptic landscapes, and a villainous Michael C. Hall hanging out with little Brighid Fleming, it seems like Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylora a putting together a very surreal affair. We've got images of Ludicrous, Butler, John Leguizamo, Michael C Hall, and loads of weirdness in our ongoing Game gallery after the break.

Butler Turned To God To Kick Nicotine Habit

2 November 2008 6:02 AM, PST | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Movie star Gerard Butler had an epiphany at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, Israel - but it wasn't enough to stop him smoking.

The 300 star turned to prayer after hypnotism and patches failed to work, and for a moment, he thought a higher power had helped end his nicotine addiction.

Butler says, "I'm thinking, 'If this guy (Jesus) can die for mankind, the least I can do is quit smoking.

"I really felt an epiphany was happening. I even thought I saw a light around me. Four hours later, I bought a packet of Marlboro Reds. Who am I kidding? I need a cigarette."

Multpile Personality Disorder Report

1 November 2008 9:44 AM, PDT | From QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news

Since it's been a while since we slapped a Multiple Personality Disorder Report on the site I'll just remind everyone that these reports are our way of quickly running through some news from the past week that, while cool, just wasn't quite worthy of a full spread of valuable Qe real estate. Things have been pretty crazy around here these days, what with so many cool movies and books coming into the office everyday, but we'll be trying to post these weekly reports a bit more often. Now let's get to it.

One of the biggest bits of news was probably that Martyrs director Pascal Laugier is in the final stages of signing on to direct the remake of Clive Barker's 80s classic Hellraiser. To The Hollywood Reporter Laugier said; "This is a dream project for me," Laugier said. "I know Clive Barker's work very well, and I

Movie Drinking Games: RockNRolla

31 October 2008 1:48 PM, PDT | From FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news

Guy Ritchie may be leaving his Madonna, but he’s coming back for London gangster films. His latest movie RockNRolla shows Gerard Butler and a bunch of crooks in some compromising situations. They live hard, they live fast, and they drink. So let’s join them. And now, to cover our butts... This ...

Toby Kebbell as Johnny Quid in RocknRolla

Photo: Warner Bros. As a fan of Guy Ritchie's Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels I was anxious to see RocknRolla, a film billed as Ritchie's return to the genre that made him popular -- Blighty gangstas! -- and it delivers in all its familiar fashion. Of course, such delivery can alternatively be seen as a negative considering much of the film has that "been there" feel since Ritchie's style of directing and zip-bang editing has been copied and even spoofed since he first embraced the style with Lock Stock back in 1999. Luckily for me, I like it -- a lot actually -- and welcome back the man that mastered it. In terms of story, it's fast paced and intricate so keep up with me here. I'll skip over the film's opening and begin by introducing Lenny Cole (Tom Wilkinson

Movie Review - 'Rocknrolla'

31 October 2008 12:04 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Rocknrolla

Starring Gerard Butler, Tom Wilkinson, and Mark Strong

Directed by Guy Ritchie

Rated R

It has been a long time since Guy Ritchie made a film worth talking about, or at least, one worth talking about positively. His career began with a sonic boom: Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. are two of the great crime comedies of their generation.

But it was all downhill after that, with a tragic re-reading of Swept Away with his now-estranged wife, Madonna, which was until earlier this year, the worst film I'd seen as a critic. That was followed three years later by a confused flick called Revolver, which had more people in its cast than in its audience.

Neither one of those films followed the director's tried and true formula, and whether or not the decision to return to what he knows best was conscious or not, RocknRolla is

RocknRolla

30 October 2008 10:56 PM, PDT | From The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news

RocknRolla Directed by: Guy Ritchie Cast: Gerard Butler, Tom Wilkinson, Thandie Newton, Jeremy Piven and Ludacris Running Time: 1 hr 55 mins Rating: R Plot: Sometimes it's easier to actually do the things happening in Guy Ritchie plots than describe them. But here goes: members from the underground and the upper class become intertwined in an intricate scheme involving millions of dollars available from a real estate scam. Problems increase when "rocknrolla" Johnny Quid (Toby Kebbell) obtains a painting that Johnny's scam-involved father, Lenny Cole (Wilkinson), is also seeking. Who’s It For? This one goes out to anyone who likes a little substance to their gritty rock 'em sock 'ems. This isn't a Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels or a Snatch., but it will pacify Guy Ritchie fans who share his enthusiasm for anti-gangsters that

'Outlander' To Show Moviegoers What's Underneath a Kilt

30 October 2008 12:33 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

All right girls, which one of you out there sold your soul for Jamie Fraser to finally make it to the big screen? Because you succeeded! According to Variety, Essential Films has optioned the enormously popular Outlander series, and snagged none other than Braveheart scribe Randall Wallace to write it. The script is being shopped out to directors as we speak, with an eye to making it a franchise.

For those of you who haven't had the pleasure, Outlander is a series of historical romance novels by Diana Gabaldon. They center on Claire Randall, a strong-willed English nurse who has just been reuinted with her husband after World War II. While on a second honeymoon, Claire steps through a stone circle and is swept back to 18th century Scotland. She becomes ensnared in the life of the Fraser clan -- and is forced to marry the impossibly handsome Jamie Fraser.

If you check the 'yes' box next to liking Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and the film Snatch then here's another one for you. British gangsters deliver popcorn violence in quirky heist film

A decade ago, Guy Ritchie became the new British icon of pop violence with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. His visual assault of gunfire camera cuts and cockney one-liners made him the international competition to Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avery’s exploitation renaissance. After the combined disappointment of Swept Away and Revolver, Ritchie returns to form with RocknRolla, a hyper-stylized crime ensemble with just enough bombast for a modest career resurrection. The film stars Tom Wilkinson as Lenny Cole, a traditional gangster whose real-estate monopoly is pursued by an Eastern Bloc crime lord (Karel Roden) and a troupe of modern opportunists led by One Two (Gerard Butler). A boring exposition and clichéd archetypes trail into colorful bits of hilarity,

Police 'Raid Hudson Party'

28 October 2008 5:10 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Hollywood star Kate Hudson's Halloween party attracted some unusual guests - a squad of Los Angeles cops reportedly swooped on the bash and ordered revellers to tone it down.

The Almost Famous star, 29, was dressed as a 1960s flight attendant when Lapd officers arrived at her Brentwood, L.A. home at 1am on Sunday morning (26Oct) to move revellers inside the property and warn them to keep the noise down.

The hit party was attended by Courtney Cox, dressed as a witch, and husband David Arquette as a warlock. Actress Winona Ryder went as a mouse, former supermodel Cindy Crawford turned up as U.K. hellraiser Amy Winehouse outfit.

But it was 300 star Gerard Butler who was the biggest hit at the bash

A source adds, "All the girls at the party were lining up to talk to Gerard. He left with two very sexy vampires."

RocknRolla (review)

27 October 2008 11:14 AM, PDT | From www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news

Guy Ritchie would surprise us if he surprised us. RocknRolla, his latest mockney crime caper, is exactly what you expect it to be, if you saw his Snatch or Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Hell, it’s exactly what you want it to be, if you loved those films for their exuberant cartoon aggression and winking, wicked wit. After all, no one complains when one Bugs Bunny cartoon is pretty much the same as the one before. No one minds when the Road Runner shows up the Coyote once again. You’d be disappointed, in fact, if you didn’t get what you paid for. Speaking of cartoons: Gerard Butler’s (P.S. I Love You, 300) One Two -- that’s his name, though presumably not the one his mother gave him -- is kinda the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote wrapped up into one delicious-looking if agreeably dumb package.

Jennifer Aniston Adds Gerard to Her Tower of Dinner Dates

27 October 2008 9:00 AM, PDT | From Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news

Jennifer Aniston was dressed casually in baggy jeans and a tank as she visited a friend in La on Friday. The actress is keeping John quiet on their relationship, although the latest rumor about Jen involves another tall, handsome man. She recently had an affectionate dinner with Gerard Butler and a friend at Tower Bar, where they all but ignored the third person at the table. While these two have been linked before, it's of course very possible they're out for work or just as friends, but it seems as if most of you never wanted a Jen and John reunion so maybe you'd be happy with Gerard being the reason for Jen's secretive smiles. An Early Review of Gerard Butler's 'Game'

23 October 2008 4:32 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

As I discovered yesterday, it doesn't always pay to make assumptions, so this time I'm going to let the news speak for itself. Over at AICN, a loyal reader and reviewer named "Sexy Whisk" managed to score a seat at an early preview of Gerard Butler's Game and provided us all with some very special deets. Judging from what they had to say, it's not looking good for the video game-inspired flick. So where to begin? According to the review, the action is a let down, the cast is wasted, and most of the film rides a fine line of creepy and offensive (if you don't believe me, you can read the full review here).

Game stars Butler as the leading player in an online fight to the death. This Running Man-style narrative has the added twist that the players in this game are controlled by the viewers (apparently

F. Gary Gray a 'Law-Abiding Citizen'

18 October 2008 2:23 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

I have zero ill will towards F. Gary Gray as a filmmaker, but if he's stepping in for the guy who directed Shawshank Redemption on a new movie, then maybe Law-Abiding Citizen isn't all it's cracked up to be. Again, Gray has done some good stuff, especially The Italian Job, but you just have an expectation when you hear something is going to be a Frank Darabont film and a different one when you hear it will be directed by F. Gary Gray.

Having said that, Darabont really hasn't made anything good in over half a decade, so perhaps that gap is closing.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Gray will replace Darabont, who abruptly left the film after creative differences were cited. He inherits a project starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx, which isn't a bad place to start.

It's been a big week for Gray, who was previously announced
