A host of stars gathered in New York on Thursday night to pay tribute to Hollywood funnyman Ben Stiller.
The actor was honoured at the city's Museum of the Moving Image gala for his contribution to film, with past recipients of the award including Tom Cruise, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.
And a string of celebrities turned out to congratulate the star on his achievement, including Robert De Niro, Sean 'Diddy' Combs, Mike Myers, Adam Sandler and Jack Black - who all gave their own tributes to Stiller at the Big Apple's Cipriani venue.
Rapper Combs joked with the crowd, "I put Ben in my video for Bad Boy for Life. I thought he'd return the favour. But I guess I wasn't black enough to be in Tropic Thunder. Robert Downey Jr. was a little blacker. But that's fine."
Austin Powers star Myers added, "Ben is really good-looking and, because of my arrogance, I assumed he wasn't funny."
And once Stiller took to the stage to accept the honour, he set about dedicating the award to his favourite musician - U2 frontman Bono.
He told the audience, "Just so I have something in common with him other than knowing all the words to Achtung, Baby."

It’s amazing how different America and indeed the world have become since the last Mid Week Movie News Wrap Up. No I’m no talking about the Us Presidential election - I’m talking about some of the nasty comments aimed at me following my Quantum of Solace review.
This week:
There’s movement on another Smokin’ Aces; Antonio Banderas is Dali; Jack Black Travels while Soderbergh goes Gilda and Gangster.
1. Joe Carnahan has stated on his official blog that a prequel to his action packed, star-filled film Smokin’ Aces is in the offing.
Old Smokin’ Joe said:
“Finally, some actual ‘Smokin Aces’ news. Universal has officially greenlit the
prequel and we are underway. Cameos will abound. Trust me.”
Does this mean Ben Affleck, Alicia Keys or Ryan Reynolds? Who knows, but the sequel will be going Direct to DVD so don’t expect a whole lot of top tier talent.

Spider-Man, her new show - extravaganza, really - whose budget has ballooned to $40 million, making it the most expensive production in theater history. Some of the people involved (there are dozens and dozens, with more being added daily) are starting to blanch at the price tag. With straight faces, a few are running around town saying things like: Well, it's $40 million now, but we think we can get it down to $35 million. - - - - - - That's the blurb of New York Post's Michael Riedel (http://www.nypost.com/seven/10082008/entertainment/theater/taymors_web_of_riches_132605.htm). Apparently, Julie Taymor's follow up to her Beatles-inspired musical Across the Universe might become the most expensive Broadway production ever. Most of the money are supposed to be spent for designs. Riedel added: There's a set designer and a costume designer and a projections designer and a fight designer and

Move over, Kevin Bacon. John Mayer has his own celebrity name game – and Paul Newman is the undisputed champ. The singer-songwriter recently took to his blog to explain the game and, more importantly, to honor the late screen legend. "I used to play this game with my friends where we'd try and figure out who the 'heaviest' legend was in terms of having the clout to bump another superstar from a reservation at a packed restaurant on a Saturday night," Mayer wrote. "It starts to get fun when ... [you're] bickering about whether Robert De Niro bumps Bob Dylan, or Springsteen bumps Bono.

U2 frontman Bono has urged the U.S. government not to forget the world's poor despite the country's current turbulent economic climate.
The human rights campaigner joined former U.S. president Bill Clinton at his 4th annual philanthropic summit in New York on Wednesday and accused the West of abandoning their duty to help impoverished nations.
The singer also criticised the Bush administration for using $700 billion (GBP388 billion) to bail out Wall Street investment bankers instead of clearing Third World debt - branding the move "mad".
He told the summit, "It is extraordinary to me that you can find $700 billion to save Wall Street and the entire G8 can't find $25 billion (GBP13.8 billion) to save 25,000 children who die every day of preventable treatable disease and hunger. That's mad, that is mad."
Clinton added, "This crisis is not an excuse to walk away from the world's challenges, but a compelling reason to intensify our efforts to meet them, around the corner and around the world."
In 2005, the G8 vowed to raise $50 billion (GBP27.7 billion) in annual aid by 2010, with GBP25 billion (GBP13.8 billion) going to Africa. However, as the U.S. financial system faces its biggest crisis since the Depression era of the 1930s, the G8 will fall $40 billion (GBP22.2 billion) short of its promised sum.
But Bono believes there should be no room for compromise.
He adds, "Bankruptcy is a serious business and we all know people who have lost their jobs. But this is moral bankruptcy."

There are really only a handful of musicians that I'd actually ever want to see in theaters - U2 is one of them, as is Coldplay. Blue Man Group is another. Earlier this year we had U2 3D in IMAX, now we're getting Blue Man Group 3D. Producer Charlotte Huggins, who brought us Journey to the Center of the Earth this summer, is partnering with the Blue Man Group to develop a musical that will premiere in IMAX 3D in 2010. While exact details about the production are being kept a secret, original Blue Man creator Matt Goldman says that "it's going to have a story, believe it or not. It's going to have real science content, and we're excited about being in the neuroscience space." They're currently looking for a director who can actually tell a story and shoot comedy, all in 3D. Sounds trippy... I was initially excited about

Sitting on a diamante "M" throne in a fringed black leotard and over-the-knee leather boots, Madonna kicked off her Sticky and Sweet tour Saturday night at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium in Wales, opening with "Candy Shop." The 40,000-strong audience was in for a night of treats, including onscreen appearances by Kanye West, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, who dueted on "4 Minutes." The image of rapper West encircled the stage for "Beat Goes On" as fans screamed and Madonna cruised through on a white vintage convertible car. Spears made her virtual guest spot during "Human Nature," writhing while trapped in an elevator as Madonna played the guitar.

He proposed on Christmas Eve 2006 at her grandparents' home in Gainsville, Texas. "Originally I was going to do something very special," Kattan told People about the engagement. As McA of the Beastie Boys, Adam Yauch has rapped about "Three MCs and One DJ," but as a filmmaker, he's had to learn to go solo. With his latest documentary "Gunnin' For That #1 Spot," Yauch is continuing the tradition of musicians who crossed over to direct movies, something that started all the way back when Frank Sinatra sat in the director's chair for 1965's World War II drama "None But the Brave." From documentaries to narratives, here's a list of modern musicians who have become filmmakers in one form or another in recent years.
Madonna
It seems as though the one place Madonna has never been able to reinvent herself is on the big screen, but that might change. Although she's had an almost disastrous track record as an actress (particularly when working with whomever was her significant other at the time), one forgets that Madonna

Actors Kevin Spacey, Kate Beckinsale and Hugh Grant helped to raise more than $4 million (GBP2 million) for cancer research, after attending a charity auction in London on Saturday.
U2 frontman Bono, Pirates of the Caribbean hunk Orlando Bloom and his model girlfriend Miranda Kerr were also in attendance at the Raisa Gorbachev Foundation Gala, which was held in the grounds of Hampton Court Palace - the former home of British royal King Henry VIII.
Philanthropist Bono made a surprise appearance on stage hailing the work of the organisation, before making way for Notting Hill star Grant to begin the auction.
And Grant showed his generous side by bidding $250,000 (GBP125,000) for a chance to have dinner with the former president of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, who founded the organisation. The money will go towards funding cancer research in the U.K. and Russia, reports People.com.
Bloom admitted he was thrilled to be a part of the event - and would have loved the chance to dine with the former Soviet leader had it not been such an expensive auction item.
He says, "It is amazing to come and support something associated with Mikhail Gorbachev because of what he did. He's going to go down in history because of the way he changed the world."

Channel 4 has issued an apology after airing an episode of The Simpsons in which Mr. Burns calls U2 "w****ers". Earlier in the show, U2 member Larry Mullen is seen using the insult - which is not considered offensive in the Us - on his bandmates. Mr. Burns imitates him during the closing credits. Usually the swearing would be cut out for British television but the offending instances slipped past Channel 4 staff preparing the April 15 episode. Broadcast regulator Ofcom received 31 complaints about the show. "Channel 4 apologised for this offensive language (more)

The second annual American Idol charity show, Idol Gives Back, saw its audience decline from last year Wednesday night even as an all-star list of personalities appeared on the show, urging viewers to help the disadvantaged at home and overseas. The primetime portion of the show between 8:00 p.m. and and 10:00 p.m. (it began at 7:30 p.m.) averaged 17.5 million viewers versus last year's 26.9 million. The final hour averaged 18.1 million. Among those pitching for contributions were Brad Pitt, Fergie, Miley Cyrus, Tyra Banks, David Spade, The Jonas Brothers, Reese Witherspoon, Gloria Estefan, Billy Crystal, Victoria and David Beckham, Bono, and former Idol contestant Daughtry, now a recording star in his own right. So many entertainment celebrities participated that the three major presidential candidates, who had each taped appeals, were bumped to tonight's (Thursday) special telecast. (New York Times TV critic Alessandra Stanley commented, "Idol Gives Back would have given the politicians an opportunity to link themselves to the stronger allure of celebrities and their high-wattage charitable causes. But American Idol producers evidently felt that the candidates didn't have the same cachet.")

U2 frontman Bono has compared environmental campaigner Al Gore to an Irish priest to whom he can confess his ecological sins. The hitmaker shared the stage with the former U.S. vice president at a conference in Davos, Switzerland on Thursday - Bono was there to promote his campaign to alleviate world poverty, while Gore was continuing his plea for the reduction of global carbon emissions. And the singer insists he can't help feeling guilty about his lavish lifestyle when around Gore. He says, "It's like being with an Irish priest. You start to confess your sins. Father Al, I am not just a noise polluter, I am a noise-polluting, diesel-soaking, gulfstream-flying rock star. I'm going to kick the habit. I'm trying father Al, but oil has been very good for me - those convoys of articulated lorries, petrochemical products, hair gel." Gore was one of the key figures behind 2007's Live Earth concerts to raise awareness about climate change. He was the subject of the Oscar-winning environment-focused documentary An Inconvenient Truth and he was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his dedication to green issues.
