Birthday Suits: Immortal Beloveds

Who needs holidays? Make your own with the birthdays of movie people.

Parker, Oleg and Vlad the Impaler (as interpreted by Gary Oldman)

Today's Birthdays 11/08

1431 Vlad the Impaler would have turned 578 years old today if not for that stake through the heart. To be accurate, his exact birthday is unknown but sometimes he's listed on this date which probably has something to do with...

1847 Bram Stoker who wrote the original Dracula, which gave Vlad the immortality that he had mythically already won as the original nosferatu... vampyr. The cinema loves him harder and deeper than Lucy Harker ever could.

1900 Margaret Mitchell wrote Gone With the Wind. She didn't have to impale anyone or renounce heaven to achieve immortality. She just had to write one mammoth book. The movie based on her novel is still the highest grossing film of all time when adjusted for inflation. One of only four films »

Three Rivers: Poor Premiere Ratings; Cancel It or Keep It?

5 October 2009 4:37 PM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

Many Moonlight fans are still upset over the cancellation of CBS' Friday night vampire series. CBS is counting on viewers wanting more of the show's star, Alex O'Loughlin, and put him front and center in the new medical series, Three Rivers. So, will O'Loughlin's physician outlive his vampire character?

Three Rivers revolves around a team of elite surgeons who work in the high-pressure and emotional world of organ transplants. The leader is Dr. Andy Yablonski, (O'Loughlin) a workaholic with a quick wit.

His co-workers include rebellious Dr. Miranda Foster (Katherine Moennig), womanizing Dr. David Lee (Daniel Henney), inexperience coordinator Ryan Abbott (Christopher Hanke), dedicated head of surgery Dr. Sophia Jordan (Alfre Woodard), and Pam Acosta (Justina Machado), Andy's best friend.

Many have suspected that the drama was in trouble even before it got out of the starting gate. Amid some »

TV Review: CBS’ Generic ‘Three Rivers’ Needs a Creativity Transplant

4 October 2009 12:31 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – “Three Rivers” takes its title from the Pittsburgh heart transplant hospital at which it is set but even the dull, “easy listening” name of the show should tell you something about the earnest, drab series debuting tonight on CBS. Generic, manipulative, and almost purposefully wasting the talented cast assembled, “Three Rivers” may satisfy viewers tired after a long weekend of football but only because it’s so safe and predictable - two words that never stopped a show, especially one on CBS, from becoming a hit.

Television Rating: 2.0/5.0

There is nothing overtly “wrong” with “Three Rivers”. The cast isn’t bad and the plot of the premiere is certainly about good people doing great things, but with such a glut of medical shows this year - “Nurse Jackie,” “HawthoRNe,” “Mercy,” “Trauma” - doing “nothing wrong” is the same as doing nothing at all.

Halle, Oprah, Beyonce, Mariah & More Rumored To Be In New Tyler Perry Film

25 September 2009 2:22 AM, PDT | The Humor Mill | See recent The Humor Mill news »

A couple of weeks ago it was reported that Lionsgate Films had tapped Tyler Perry to write, direct and produce an adaptation of the 1975 play "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf." The film is slated to be the first project for Perry's 34th Street Films production company, housed at Lionsgate.

Well during that time we discovered that "For Colored Girls" will begin shooting in Atlanta in November, with Lionsgate planning a release next year. In case you hadn't heard the play is a series of 20 poems telling stories of love, abandonment, domestic abuse and other issues faced by black women.

Since the news broke about For Colored Girls, we have heard a rumor about the casting of the film, and rumor has it that Halle Berry, Oprah Winfrey, Cicely Tyson, Kimberly Elise, Ruby Dee, Maya Angelou, Angela Bassett, Thandie Newton, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, »

Three Rivers Premiere Episode Swap

22 September 2009 3:06 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

CBS has a great track record with their shows and they get some pretty decent ratings from their present collection of programming. On top of that, I know there are some shows that folks are eagerly waiting for.

For instance, I know many Alex O’Loughlin (The Shield, Moonlight) fans are probably looking forward to the October 4th premiere of CBS’s Three Rivers.

Today, CBS presented a few press releases where they announced the swapping of episodes.  Specifically, the first two episodes.  That means that now the episode originally scheduled to be 2nd is now showing as the premiere episode, and the original premiere will be following the week after.

If this were Fox, I’d be suspicious that they were doing what they usually do with promising shows, but I don’t know what to think about this move from CBS.

Maybe they know what they’re doing. »

Kate Moennig goes long for "Three Rivers"

15 September 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

When is a new hairstyle not just a new hairstyle? When it’s the hairstyle for the most obsessed about former fictional lesbian hairstylist in all of the universe.

New promo shots of Kate Moennig were released with the artist formerly known as Shane is sporting long, lovely locks.

Kate’s new medical drama Three Rivers, about a team of elite surgeons who perform organ transplants and the patients they work with, has undergone several changes since its pilot.

Julia Ormond played Dr. Sophia Jordan, the head of surgery at Three Rivers Hospital, originally. But four-time Emmy winner Alfre Woodard has stepped into the role since the series was picked up. The first shots of her in the cast were also released.

Another noticeable change will be the doctors’ scrubs. In the pilot they were quite snug and form fitting. But for the series the clothing has become looser and more professional. »

Kate Moennig plays doctor in the first promo pictures for "Three Rivers"

3 August 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

You know who is not looking very Shane today? Kate Moennig. The first cast promo shots for the former The L Word star’s new medical series, Three Rivers, were released recently. Can I just say, whoa.

Ok, before we can proceed we must discuss this image. First, I’m not sure Shane would approve of this haircut. Also, is it just me or did the marketing department find a “Femme-Up” tool in Photoshop and just go crazy? Though, I am happy to see Kate’s patented pout is still alive and well.

The show follows organ transplantation from three points of view: the doctors, the donors and the recipients. Kate plays Dr. Miranda Foster, a member of the elite surgical team who has a rebellious streak and fiery temper. She also happens to the daughter of the revered surgeon the medical wing is named after. I wonder how wardrobe »

Three Rivers</i>" style="margin:0 5px 5px" />CBS' new organ transplant drama, Three Rivers, has made organ donors of its stars. Most of them, anyway.

Castmates Alex O'Loughlin (Moonlight), Alfre Woodard (St. Elsewhere), Justina Machado (Six Feet Under) and other series regulars addressed the issue during a set visit as part of the Television Critics Association fall press tour.

O'Loughlin said he's been a donor since his teenage years.

"It just seemed like the cool thing to do," he joked, before adding, "I don't need it anymore, and I don't have any religious beliefs or anything that keep me from doing it."

The show, debuting Sunday ...

Alfre Woodard is moving to "Three Rivers"

28 July 2009 9:26 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Pittsburgh just got a little more interesting.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has reported that Alfre Woodward (Desperate Housewives) has joined the cast of CBS’s new Pittsburgh based hospital drama Three Rivers. Alfre will play lead doctor Sophia Jordan, who was originally played by Julia Ormond in the pilot.

Three Rivers chronicles the lives of three different worlds. First, the lives of the doctors who work in transplant surgery, second, the family of the transplant giver, and lastly, the transplant receiver. The series also stars among others, Moonlight’s Alex O’Laughlin as Dr. Andy Yablonski and Katherine Moennig as two docs that are could be a little too passionate for the patients, which causes them to butt heads with Dr. Jordan. Alex and Katherine will return to Pittsburgh to shoot on location for multiple episodes the Post Gazette also reports.

Red Carpet: Blood Suckers and Beauties

It's that time again. A random selection of actresses that were out and about last week. You can always interpret "random" to mean: people Nathaniel wants to say something about.

Anna Paquin.

Who knew when she was hyperventilating onstage at the '93 Oscars that she'd make good as an adult star, too? She never found a film role as magical as her debut (The Piano) but her career suddenly has new life, courtesy of the undead (True Blood). And she looks pretty good in a cheongsam too. That Globe win didn't convince Emmy to bite but they've long had a history of ignoring younger actresses (Claire Danes' immortal portrayal of "Angela Chase" didn't win) and snubbing women in genre shows altogether (Sarah Michelle Gellar's Buffy, Mary McDonnell's President Roslyn... Three weeks after Farrah Fawcett died, she earned the fourth Emmy nomination of her career, as executive producer of "Farrah's Story." The documentary detailed her courageous but ultimately losing battle against cancer. Viewers who tuned in to the May 15 special on NBC saw up close the valiant struggle of this onetime "Charlie's Angels" star. Television's highest honor eluded this small-screen icon, who earned three acting Emmy nominations during her three-decade-plus career. "Farrah's Story" was one of 43 shows in competition for the final five slots on the Emmy ballot for outstanding nonfiction special. Marisa vs. Miranda vs. Judy ~ 1992 Smackdown

31 May 2009 2:25 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

I regret to inform that I had to bow out of StinkyLulu's Supporting Actress Smackdown for 1992. I haven't participated in a long time and I had really hoped to. 1992's women offer a wealth of Oscar discussables and tropes: the wisecracking dame, the old biddy, the longsuffering spouse, the maligned winner, the nominee who maybe isn't being thanked for the performance she's nominated for but for her entire year, the Woody Allen player, Oscar's perceived anglophilia versus its perceived nationalism.

The nominees were:

Judy Davis, Husbands and WivesJoan Plowright, Enchanted AprilVanessa Redgrave, Howards EndMiranda Richardson, Damages

Marisa Tomei, My Cousin Vinny

My vote would have gone to Judy Davis (Husbands and Wives) and by quite a large margin. To drive the point home further, she is roughly tied with Julianne Moore (Boogie Nights) for my favorite supporting actress performance of the 1990s altogether. Unless you count Michelle's Catwoman (Batman Returns) as supporting. »
