Review: Ponyo Aka The Cutest Movie Ever

11 November 2009 2:33 AM, PST | doorQ.com | See recent doorQ.com news »

Okay, as the official anime nerd of DoorQ.com, it is my duty to bring to you the glory and wonders of Japanese animation. I've kinda been slacking on my blog posts for the past few months because of the new job and doing things even a censor bar couldn't protect you against with my boyfriend =)

No more, though! Back to my anime-gushing ways! I just spent a nice chunk of my raise (Can you believe it? People actually reward you for hard work and a good job) on some fabulous anime box sets spanning several different genres! This is gonna be Tight, Dawg!!!

*Ahem* Moving along... A few months ago, a bunch of friends of mine went with me to see Hayao Miyazaki's newest creation, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, as interpreted by Disney at a midnight showing on the big screen! The story of the »

Crashville: The Risky Route To Oscar Glory

6 November 2009 10:00 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

In March 2006 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sprung one of its annual surprises by awarding the best picture Oscar to Crash, rather than Ang Lee’s acclaimed gay cowboy drama, Brokeback Mountain. At the time it looked as though racism and multiple vehicular pile-ups had trumped homosexuality in the battle of the “hot button” issue movies. But perhaps the Academy was belatedly acknowledging the kind of ambitious, densely plotted, multi-character dramas made famous by the great Robert Altman. From 1975’s Nashville, to Short Cuts, Prêt à Porter and his 2006 swansong A Prairie Home Companion, Altman allowed audiences to immerse themselves in the cinematic equivalent of a book of short stories. Writer Alissa Quart has characterised these films with multiple intersecting plotlines as “hyperlink movies”, in which, “information, character, and action co-exist without hierarchy”. Now I’m a fan of Altman and I loved Paul Thomas Anderson’s, »

Channel Surfing: Sarah Wynter Gets "Damages," "Life on Mars" Creators Developing at ABC, "Party Down" in April, CBS Counts Down "Numb3rs," and More

5 November 2009 3:39 PM, PST | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

Welcome to your Thursday morning television briefing. Sarah Wynter (24) has joined the cast of FX's Damages in a recurring role on the series' third season, set to launch in early 2010. She joins the previously reported Reiko Aylesworth, Martin Short, Lily Tomlin, and Campbell Scott. Wynter will play a mysterious "'security specialist' helping a high-level assistant district attorney unravel" a financial scheme; Aylesworth will play the wife of Campbell Scott's character. [Editor: I've also just been informed that "Short's character is a high-powered attorney (family friend) who defends a prominent NY family accused of the financial scheme. Lily Tomlin plays the matriarch of the family."] (Hollywood Reporter) Life on Mars creators Ashley Pharoah and Matthew Graham have been commissioned by BBC Worldwide new drama czar Jane Tranter to write the script for an ABC drama pilot described as a "California cop show with a British twist." Should the project--executive produced by Julie Gardner--go to pilot, it would be produced by BBC Worldwide's Los Angeles production team and Pharoah and Gardner would remain heavily involved, unlike their limited creative involvement with the Us version of Life on Mars. »

Tomlin Stunned Hepburn During Backstage Meeting

23 October 2009 12:06 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Veteran actress Lily Tomlin once risked the wrath of Katharine Hepburn when she invaded the Hollywood icon's personal space to plant several kisses on her face.

The Desperate Housewives star was appearing in a Broadway production of one-woman play The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe in 1985 when she discovered top movie stars Barbra Streisand, Meryl Streep and Hepburn were sitting in the audience.

And Tomlin was so excited when Hepburn came backstage to meet her, she admits she may have overstepped the boundaries with the notoriously frosty star.

She explains, "One night I was on Broadway and Meryl Streep, Katharine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand came. I didn't know. I heard someone coming up to the dressing room and I saw Katharine Hepburn's face coming towards me. And I grabbed hold of her face and started kissing her.

"If you know Katharine Hepburn, she would not like that. And she didn't do anything! I was kissing her and she was so gracious, she didn't really say anything unpleasant." »

Marc Cherry Developing New Show for ABC

9 October 2009 2:24 AM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Now that "Desperate Housewives" has been running for five years, creator Marc Cherry is looking out to venture into another show. He has been in talks with ABC to develop a new series which previously was referred to as a spin-off to "Desperate".

The new series which is aimed for next season has since been granted a stand-alone status according to THR. Cherry is assisted in writing the project by "Desperate" executive producer, Alexandra Cunningham. Both of them will also be executive producing together with Sabrina Wind. There is still little detail about the project but it is said to have the same tone to "Desperate".

Regarding whether Cherry would leave his post on "Desperate", THR said that Cherry has committed himself to the very end of the show.

Back in May, there were reports circulating that Kathryn Joosten and Lily Tomlin from "Desperate" will get their own show. Their characters, »

Terrific Trailers: 9 to 5

1 October 2009 6:32 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If you are a regular around these parts, then you have probably noticed that I have a streak of feminism in me a mile wide, and while I've read all the great tomes on equality, most, if not all of my 'girl-power' tendencies can be traced back to Dolly Parton. So for today's installment of Terrific Trailers, I went back all the way to 1980 to bring you the trailer for the greatest feminist film ever made, 9 to 5. Colin Higgins' comedy was the story of three working women (played by Parton, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda) as they banded together to bring down their pig of a boss, and was the first time the idea of a 'gender divide' made it's way into my kiddie consciousness...and I've been a card-carrying little feminist ever since.

It's strange to see a trailer that looks nothing like what passes for a quality trailer or teaser these days. »

"Damages" courts Lily Tomlin

28 September 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

If you’re searching for a sign of intelligent life in television, look no further than this latest big of casting news. Next season’s nemesis for Damages’ Cruella-like attorney Patty Hewes will be played by our favorite multiple-personality lesbian, Lily Tomlin.

FX announced this week that Tomlin will guest star on Damages’ third season as the head of a powerful family. Campbell Scott will play her son and Martin Short will be the family’s “high-powered attorney.”

Yes, that Martin Short.

Damages resumed production this week after Close racked up her second Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama for the role of Hewes. Last year, Close became the first actress from a basic cable series to win the award.

Tomlin, believe it or not, turned 70 on September 1 and isn’t slowing down one iota. She has a full slate of live shows scheduled in addition to TV and movie appearances. »

Martin Short, Lily Tomlin, and more headed to Damages

23 September 2009 1:04 PM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Hewes & Associates is getting bigger.

FX announced yesterday that season three of Damages, which returns to FX in January and begins filming today in New York, has added four big names to the cast. Martin Short and Campbell Scott have both signed on as regulars and Lily Tomlin and Keith Carradine are joining as guest stars.

This news has me really excited. Last season, after William Hurt, Marcia Gay Harden, John Doman, and Darrell Hammond all signed on, I said it was arguably one of the finest casts ever assembled for a TV drama. With these new names added to the roster, this season is shaping up to be just as good, if not better. The only thing missing from this news? Confirmation that Ted Danson will return for at least a few eps to reprise his role as Arthur Frobisher - hopefully, he'll be back as well.
