I get all excited when I see that something is filming in my neighborhood. Yes, I live in Manhattan, where not a day goes by without a film shoot, but there's still a joy in seeing the place where you ride your bike on the big screen. So the new thriller Columbus Circle, with its story about an upscale Manhattan apartment building and title referring to the location of my Whole Foods, sounds like exactly the kind of set I will complain about for months when it blocks traffic, and then be happy to see on the screen. Except that it's filming in Los Angeles. And that's no fun at all. So now it's up to the cast-- Selma Blair, Amy Smart, Jason Lee, Giovanni Ribisi and Kevin Pollak-- to make the whole thing worth watching. THR writes that Blair will play a reclusive heiress wrapped up in a

On a recent episode of his internet talk show, Pollak revealed that the idea for the film came on a plane ride back from the Cannes Film Festival after producer Christopher Mallick had lost the rights to a remake of a Korean film. The indestructible hopped-up hitman Chev Chelios, played to the hilt once again by Jason Statham, returns in Crank High Voltage, picking up where the first film left off -- except this time, Chelios is chasing a Chinese gangster who hijacked his heart and substituted it with a mechanical one that needs to be jolted with an electric charge to stay pumping. Great choreography can’t sustain clumsy swing-dancing film
It’s sad that the one way Love N’ Dancing is a unique movie doesn’t even come from its dancing, but rather from how little it seems like its writer, director, actors, or pretty much anyone else involved with the picture were trying. For starters, its story is almost impossibly lazy and clichéd. Jessica (Amy Smart) wants to take her fiancé (Billy Zane) to dance lessons, but when he’s too busy with work to learn she ends up falling in love with her dance instructor (Tom Malloy) instead. Unfortunately, that’s all there is to the plot, and with not a twist in site the story really can be

Having shown its domination at 2009 MTV Movie Awards, "Twilight" is on its way to sweep away another awards, the 11th Annual Teen Choice Awards. Following the announcement of the awards' nominees for 2009, it is uncovered that the vampire drama movie led the fields by grabbing the most nods, twelve in all.
Among its nominations, the Catherine Hardwicke-directed movie scored Choice Movie: Drama as well as Choice Movie: Romance. It also put up several of its cast members, including Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Cam Gigandet, to compete in the performers categories. Beside nabbing nominations from the movie field, it also landed a nod for its soundtrack.
Aside from "Twilight", another movie collecting multiple nominations was "High School Musical 3: Senior Year". The first feature film made out of Disney's popular musical series "High School Musical" garnered 10 counts, including for Choice Movie: Music/Dance. It also placed its actresses,

Guitar Hero's highly anticipated spinoff game, DJ Hero, launched in La last night, already boasting quite the celebrity following. Eminem looked a lot more comfortable rapping with Jay-z yesterday than he did at the MTV Movie Awards, though the show's writer admitted that the stunt was all staged and rehearsed. DJ Am showed off his real-life turntable skills for the crowd, which included Matthew McConaughey, Camila Alves, Abbie Cornish, and Ryan Phillippe. Despite the news that Pete Wentz's NYC bar is temporarily shutting down for serving minors, he and Ashlee Simpson joined the bash. Kim Kardashian came to hear Eminem's shoutout to her live as they partied the night away months before the game's release this Fall. Movies like Love N' Dancing are a dime a dozen. Regardless of the highlights, and there are a couple, you've seen so many movies aiming for the exact same target that it's hard for this one to stand out. Worse, the film feels like it's Ok with its mediocrity. The acting's derivative without being distracting, the story's only so-so, and the depths are pretty shallow.
Low budget films face some huge hurdles, no doubt about it, but it would be easier to form a connection with a movie made outside the system if it didn't resemble a movie made within the system several times a year.

Whether you're tired of people texting during the movie, want to relax on your couch or have a fear of catching swine flu, there's plenty of entertainment options that you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home this summer, whether it's On Demand, Online, or On DVD. A helpful guide is below, and don't forget our look at the indie films that are hitting theaters this summer.
On Demand
Our sister company IFC Films will have quite the busy summer, providing at least one film a week to watch on demand and nowhere else. The company's Festival Direct summer schedule recently kicked off with the Robert Pattinson teen drama "How to Be," and will be followed on May 6th by the premieres of Pablo Proenza's haunted house thriller "Dark Mirror" and the Patrick Wilson-Amy Smart romantic dramedy "Life In Flight," which premiered at last year's Tribeca Film Festival.

Atom Egoyan landed himself a Palme d'Or nomination at last year's Cannes for the latest of his patented multi-stranded narratives of introspection, this one a meditation on the marginalization of truth and the role of technology in the post-9/11 mindset. Devon Bostick stars as Simon, an orphaned student whose class assignment translating a newspaper article about the would-be martyrdom of a pregnant woman has personal ramifications when he writes a fictionalized op-ed from the perspective of the now-grown child that takes on a life of its own once it hits the web.
Opens in New York and Los Angeles.

Environmentally-conscious celebrities headed to the National Resources Defense Council's 20th Anniversary party in Beverly Hills on Saturday night. It was no surprise to see two of our favorite eco-loving celebrities Cameron Diaz and Leonardo DiCaprio walking the red carpet. Cameron's also had some fun movie news to celebrate - she's in talks to star in a legal comedy called Bobbie Sue. Jon Hamm was also there showing off some scruff while still looking dapper in his suit. Earth Day was on the 22nd and a party celebrating our natural resources was the perfect way to end a particularly environmental week. When we last left anti-hero Chev Chelios (Jason Statham), he was plummeting to earth after leaping out of a flying helicopter. So how do writer/directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor explain his miraculous return for an even more ridiculous sequel? They don’t.
At the start of Crank: High Voltage, the indestructible Chelios is literally scraped off the pavement with a shovel and scooped into a van by a gang of unforgiving henchmen. He’s transported to a facility where he lies conscious on an operating table watching surgeons remove his heart and replace it with a piece of machinery. I’m no doctor, but there’s something not quite right about that scene. Why a snow shovel?
When the procedure is complete Chelios kick starts a rampaging ride of violence that plows over anyone who stands in the way of retrieving his superhuman heart. The 96-minute surge of

Lionsgate Home Entertainment and Ghost House Underground have given Fango the on-line premiere of their trailer for Seventh Moon, the supernatural thriller they’re releasing on DVD later this year. You can see the preview, which we debuted at our West Coast convention this past weekend, below.
Seventh Moon, directed and co-written by The Blair Witch Project’s Eduardo Sanchez, stars Amy Smart (currently on screen in Lionsgate’s highly recommended Crank: High Voltage) and Tim Chiou as a honeymooning couple who run afoul of ancient spirits in China. Other movies coming later this year from Lionsgate and Ghost House Underground include Tom Shankland’s much-praised The Children and Andrew van den Houten’s Jack Ketchum adaptation Offspring. You can see our previous chat with Sanchez about Seventh Moon here and an early minireview here.
