Quentin Tarantino on why he turned down chance to direct Green Lantern

3 hours ago | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Given his very distinctive film-making style, what would a director such as Quentin Tarantino do with a superhero movie?

That may seem like a random thought with no basis in reality. But it transpires that Tarantino not only based his Inglourious Basterds on Marvel Comics' war series Sgt Fury and His Howling Commandos, but was asked to direct the big-screen adaptation of DC Comics' hero Green Lantern for Warner Bros.

Since then, Casino Royale's Martin Campbell ended up at the helm of Green Lantern, with Ryan Reynolds in the star role.

Tarantino explained to MTV: "I was offered the Green Lantern. Not since it's been a script, but just like, 'Hey we own the 'Green Lantern.' Would you like it?'"

He declined, although he insists he is a big comic book fan: "There's a little part of me that's like, 'Wow, if I was in my 20s, »

Will 'Twilight' Taylor Lautner's 'Max Steel' spark teen superhero casting?

5 hours ago | Zap2It - The Dish Rag | See recent Zap2It - The Dish Rag news »

Hollywood insiders are buzzing about "Twilight: New Moon" star Taylor Lautner being cast as "Max Steel" in a superhero movie about a teen recruited by a secret agency after (the usual story) an accident gifts him with super powers.

Many are wondering if the casting of 17-year-old Taylor signals the end of the old fart superhero and the reign of the hot teen heartthrob superhero.

Fact: the majority of superhero film fans who  go to the theaters are young. Oh, sure, there are still some old superhero geeks like Kevin Smith (joke, Kev).

But most movie-goers are not baby boomers or even baby boomers' kids. They are teenagers and young twentysomethings who like to see actors their own age. Not their dads or grandpas.

And judging by the success of "Twilight's" squeaky-clean romance, these young-uns don't even want/need to see sex scenes.

And fact: Thanks to Taylor's addition of »

A Trio of Poster Designs for Ryan Reynolds' 'Buried'

23 hours ago | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Quiet Earth got its hands on three posters for the upcoming Ryan Reynolds drama, Buried. The Saul Bass fan in me really likes the second design, but that and the third one were both apparently rejected, sadly. The first one is not nearly as interesting, but it does show Ryan Reynolds' face (well, kind of), and that's probably pretty important to the producers.

Sundance Reveals 2010 Non-Competition Slate

4 December 2009 5:24 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

On Wednesday the Sundance Film Festival unveiled the films competing in late January 2010.  Yesterday they announced the rest of the line-up of independent films vying for attention for industry types and the curious public.

The entire list of 53 films is below, but here are a few that stood out to me from the premieres alone:

Mumblecore directors the Duplass Brothers, have a new, untitled movie starring an unusually high-profile cast compared to their usual improvisational crew.  John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei, Jonah Hill, and Catherine Keener.  Reilly and Keener are actually in two films at the 2010 festival.

The Company Men, starring Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, Rosemarie DeWitt about corporate downsizing.

Rodrigo Cortes’ Buried, starring Ryan Reynolds as a man buried alive in a coffin.  I’ve read the script and its great.  More on that as soon as I can.

Well, it's Friday at last, Splash Page faithful. This wraps up a very big week on the site — mostly thanks to "Iron Man 2" and its armored duo of War Machine and Iron Man.

Here's how the week's top stories shook out:

10. Jeremy Renner clarified those pesky Hawkeye rumors regarding "Thor" and "The Avengers" in this interview with MTV News.

9. Hmm. Does "Avatar" star Sam Worthington have a secret connection to "The Avengers" he's not telling us?

8. If War Machine ever decides to go solo in Hollywood, here are five rules for making his big-screen spin-off a success!

7. The second "Iron Man 2" poster to debut this week offered a darker look at Tony stark.

6. Did this ad for the "Iron Man 2" toy line give us the first peek at Don Cheadle in the War Machine armor?

5. A bunch of new "Iron Man 2" images arrived online featuring Mickey Rourke, »

Official Poster for Buried

4 December 2009 2:20 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

After announcing that Buried would be shown at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, we get a look at the new poster (via /Film).  Buried stars Ryan Reynolds, and well, that’s it.  Reynolds plays a civilian contractor who is working in Iraq and wakes up to find himself buried in a coffin with nothing but a lighter, cell phone and a knife.  Sounds intriguing doesn’t it.

We originally heard about this film over the summer but haven’t heard to much since then.  I like the look of the poster even if it does leave me a little breathless.  I’m sure this film will induce a state of claustrophobia in several people, but I’m interested none the less.  It will also be interesting to see if Ryan Reynolds can hold a film together without the help from a supporting cast.  I think he’s talented and will be able to pull it off. »

New Poster for Buried Starring Ryan Reynolds and for Kick-ass

4 December 2009 11:57 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

With Buried (starring Ryan Reynolds) debuting at the Sundance Film Festival and Kick-Ass bowing in April, there’s not a moment to lose in marketing.  I mean that in all seriousness because I think Buried could be fantastic and I’ve heard that Kick-Ass definitely is.  While the poster for Buried is a little plain (especially when you compare it to the two which didn’t make the cut), the new Kick-Ass poster is apparently the second part of a series, this time focusing on the character Red Mist (played by Christopher Mintz-Plasse).  Hopefully character posters for Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz) and Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) won’t be too far behind.

Check out both posters after the jump along with a synopsis for each.

New Poster For Buried, Plus Two Rejected Designs

4 December 2009 8:27 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

If you haven't yet heard about Ryan Reynolds' next project, Buried, it's something to look into. If you are aware of it, but don't feel the concept is very interesting, something might be very wrong with your brain. Seriously, seek medical attention. The film centers on a U.S. contractor in Iraq during the on-going conflict who wakes up to find himself buried underground with nothing more than a lighter and a cell phone. Did I mention that Reynolds is also the only person who shows up on screen, meaning that audiences will be spending two hours underground with him? Something tells me that might be a bit suspenseful. Quiet Earth has just released the newest poster for the film, as well as two designs that didn't quite make the cut. While I like the one that they chose (anyone else getting flashbacks to Kill Bill 2?) I am kind »

Ryan Reynolds Gets Buried in his Work

From the boys over at Quiet Earth, some medium sized posters for Ryan Reynolds’ upcoming Iraq-set thriller “Buried”. In the film, Reynolds plays Paul, a U.S. contractor working in Iraq who, after an attack by a group of Iraqis, wakes up to find himself buried alive inside a coffin. With only a lighter and a cell phone trapped in the coffin with him, it’s a race against time to escape this claustrophobic death trap. The film is directed by Rodrigo Cortés, and will be set almost entirely in the coffin with Reynolds, which means if you can’t stand Reynolds’ handsome mug, you’re in for a rough time. »

Buried Movie Poster: Ryan Reynolds Is Not Happy

4 December 2009 7:35 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Hot on the heels of Rodrigo Cortes' Buried being chosen for the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, a poster has been released for the film (via Quietearth). We first got wind of this film back in summer, when it was revealed that the movie would primarily be a one-man show starring Ryan Reynolds. Reynolds plays a civilian contractor in Iraq who is kidnapped and buried alive in the desert, left with a lighter, a knife, and a cell phone to get himself out. Fans of The Tobolowsky Files will recall that in  episode 3, actor Stephen Tobolowsky revealed that he will play a voice in the film on the other end of a cell phone line (The film was already completed at that point and he was just doing Adr). Despite this, my understanding is still that Reynolds will be the only actor we will see on screen. Will Reynolds be able ... »

Impressive Official Poster for Ryan Reynolds' Thriller Buried

4 December 2009 2:20 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

It was just announced yesterday that Rodrigo Cortés' new thriller Buried starring Ryan Reynolds and only Ryan Reynolds would be premiering at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival coming up in January. To go along with that wonderful news is this poster, thanks to our friends at Quiet Earth. They somehow dug up (pun intended) the first official poster for the film along with two other posters that were created as mock-ups but were never used in the end. This is that film that's set entirely in a coffin and it's already one of the films I'm planning to catch at Sundance. I've got a good feeling it'll be a highlight of my fest. Check out these posters!   This looks much more like a sales flyer than an official poster (consider it's horizontal, not a vertical poster) but I still dig it either way. Quentin Tarantino Could Have Directed Green Lantern

4 December 2009 1:47 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

In a recent interview with MTV, Quentin Tarantino said that one of the inspirations for his latest film, Inglourious Basterds, was the Marvel Comics series Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos. With that in mind, the similarities between the two become evident, if only on the surface: Both Tarantino's movie and the Marvel comic feature elite soldiers fighting the Nazis behind enemy lines during WWII. Apparently, that's not Tarantino's only connection to comic books and comic book movies.

In a newly released excerpt of the MTV interview, Tarantino admitted to having been "a big comic book fan" in his 20s and said that he could have directed a movie based on a popular DC Comics character.

I was offered the Green Lantern. Not since it's been a script, but just like, "Hey we own the Green Lantern. Would you like it?"

Tarantino said that he has "kind of outgrown" his interest in comic books, »
