Carriers gets early rental release...

3 December 2009 12:05 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

While the Paramount Vantage thriller Carriers (see our review here) is slated for a DVD release on December 29th (pre-order here), the rental market will get an early peek starting next Tuesday. The film has been scheduled for a December 8th rental release, with the title being made available through most DVD and/or digital rental channels. The film had a limited theatrical run back in September that bypassed most major markets (see story here) after being buzzed-about for over a year.

In a recent Fangoria Radio interview, filmmakers Alex Pastor and David Pastor revealed details on their next foray into genre fare, including their own take on the vampire/werewolf genre. Click here for details on that, and check out the latest trailer for Carriers below.

Starring Piper Perabo (Coyote Ugly), Chris Pine (Star Trek's new Kirk), Emily VanCamp (Everwood), Lou Taylor Pucci (Fanboys), and Christopher Meloni (Law »

People's Sexiest Man Alive issue: 10 Things Learned

23 November 2009 11:20 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

By now, you may have paged through People's Sexiest Man Alive issue. If there was any doubt that Johnny Depp deserved the title, which he also earned in 2003, it ends when you read about him hiding in the bushes on his daughter's first day of preschool. Here are some other interesting tidbits that can be gleaned by "reading" this year's installment. • Your 62-year-old mother is way into Depp, but doesn't get Alec Baldwin or Christopher Meloni. Thank you, People. • Jake Gyllenhaal is a Sexiest Man Alive in training. Or, at least that's what I got reading Natalie Portman's description »

Oprah's Leap From Series To Network Should Inspire These Five Shows To Follow Her Lead

20 November 2009 1:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The Queen of Daytime Television is dethroning herself. On September 9, 2011, Oprah Winfrey will take her last bow as the host of the Oprah Winfrey Show, almost 25 years to the day since the program initially launched.

But Oprah's televised days are far from over, as the media mogul plans on launching the Oprah Winfrey Network — appropriately abbreviated as Own — in early 2011. Once her show ends, she'll focus much of her energy on the brand new network.

Honestly, it's a pretty brilliant career move. In fact, it's one that several television franchises could probably follow with great success — or, at least, hilarious results. Following Oprah's move from television host to network overlord, I think these five franchises could take a similar leap from series to channel.

Have You Been Happy with November Sweeps?

17 November 2009 11:55 PM, PST | TVStar | See recent TVStar news »

Television sweeps are the best; the writers save up all the juicy storylines and make them explode during the pivotal time for networks. Sweeps Week is so important because the data that is collected by the Nielsen Rating is used by networks to set advertising costs based on their results. Because of this, many networks pull out all the stops and this year is absolutely no different. Many of the sweeps episodes have aired and later this week we will see what else the networks have in store for us, but we want to know what you think so far! CSI Trilogy: CBS took three of their most popular shows and brought fans a multiple night CSI event spanning CSI: Miami (TV), CSI: NY (TV) and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (TV). The teams from each city work together to help bring down one of the largest prostitute rings and by »

Hey Hideous Man…yeah I’m talking to you

11 November 2009 11:57 AM, PST | OriginalAlamo.com | See recent AlamoDrafthouseCinema news »

It’s no secret that men are the worst.

Despite our best efforts to hide that fact, enough ridiculous words and actions have drooled out over the past 100,000 years or so to prove that underneath whatever manly exterior we’ve built up around ourselves, there really is only one common, wretched motivation- conquest and dominance.  Even the nice guy that finished last was in the race- if he didn’t want to win, he shouldn’t have been running.  It’s why we invented guns, it’s a short-cut across the track.  Just horrible, terrible things we are.

Ok, maybe I’m just projecting my own miserable insecurities onto an entire gender, but at least I’m owning up to it.  Usually we’ll only expose weakness in the event it might aid our pursuit to manipulate a situation.

Which is why I’m excited about Brief Interviews With Hideous Men. »

The Office’s John Krasinski brings his directorial debut to the Ritz for the Austin Premiere!

4 November 2009 2:06 PM, PST | OriginalAlamo.com | See recent AlamoDrafthouseCinema news »

Look at this man.  Take a good, hard look at this man to the left.

Nothing immediately jumps out, right?  Jaw not as chiseled as, say, a Pitt or a Skarsgaard.  Eyes not quite as comforting as a Brimley or even a Jim Lehrer.  But there’s something about this man- something genuine and sincere- even if you can’t quite put your finger on it.  Something that after only five seconds of screen time as Jim Halpert on The Office made you say to yourself, “I want to be friends with that guy.”

Well, that guy is a man named John Krasinski, a Brown University educated actor and playwright who has, through incorruptible likability alone, catapulted himself into the limelight, and with his talent held his ground.

The story goes that a staged reading of David Foster Wallace’s novel Brief Interviews with Hideous Men is what first inspired Krasinski to become an actor. »

Carriers Carried to DVD this December

3 November 2009 11:08 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Paramount's Carriers is coming to rental DVD on December 8th, 2009, from Paramount Home Entertainment with a full DVD release expected in four to six weeks afterwards.

Co-starring Piper Perabo (Coyote Ugly), Emily VanCamp (“Brothers & Sisters”), and Emmy®-nominee Chris Meloni (“Law and Order: Svu”), Carriers is a terrifying journey into a world where laws and rules no longer apply and no one can be trusted – not even your friends. The film was written and directed by Alex and David Pastor.

Synopsis

A deadly virus has spread across the globe. Contagion is everywhere, no one is safe, and no one can be trusted. Four young attractive people race through the back roads of the American West to the pounding beat of a vacation soundtrack. Their aim is to retreat to a secluded Utopian beach in the Gulf of Mexico, where they could peacefully wait out the pandemic and survive the apocalyptic disease. »

'Lobo' Casting Poll Names James Preston Rogers Fans' Favorite Czarnian

20 October 2009 7:46 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

The poll results are arriving a day late this week due to yesterday's glut of comic book movie news, but we're not ones to complain about a good thing when it comes to updates on projects like "Thor," "Iron Man 2" and "Spider-Man 4." However, it's an entirely different sort of comic book movie that we asked fans to cast last week—and much like our Wonder Woman poll from a while back, the winner of our "Lobo" casting poll has a loyal fan following that played no small part in determining the winner.

In the end, former "Thor" hopeful James Preston Rogers was named MTV readers' favorite choice for the role of DC's Main Man, Lobo. The musclebound actor is probably best known for his role as a hulking barbarian in the vikings-vs-aliens film "Outlander," but he was also the subject of an extremely active fan campaign to cast him »

Alynda Wheat's Beat Cop: We come to bury 'Svu,' not to praise it

16 October 2009 10:54 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Now it’s official. Law & Order: Svu is on the crazy train, jumping tracks and stranding passengers in Nowheresville. Some of us (okay, mainly me) carped about Christine Lahti’s role as fill-in Ada Sonya Paxton from the beginning. When she wasn’t belittling Stabler (Christopher Meloni) she was sneering at Benson (Mariska Hargitay) or taunting suspects, all the while teary-eyed and callow. The character was inconsistent, insulting, and insufferable. Wednesday night we learned it was all, theoretically, because she’s a lush. Oh, let us rewind this one, because there was plenty to gnash at in this episode appropriately titled “Hammered. »

Who Should Play Lobo?

13 October 2009 2:52 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Lobo first roared into the DC Universe way back in 1983, and the "Main Man" has been fraggin' anyone who looks at him funny ever since. Originally created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen as the natural evolution of antiheroes like Wolverine and Punisher, Lobo was recently tagged for solo movie treatment courtesy of director Guy Ritchie. So the question becomes: who can bring the "Ultimate Bastich" to life on the big screen?

Early last month, we gave you our picks for who should play Lobo, and we followed up with actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan today regarding his willingness to portray the baddest of DC's good guys. But now it's your turn!

I've compiled a list of our picks for the role, as well as actors suggested by Splash Page readers. From Christopher Meloni and Danny Trejo to Ron Perlman and Vinnie Jones, now's your chance to vote for the actor »

So Many Stepfather Remake Images Daddy May Let You Live

13 October 2009 11:16 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

A new batch of images from “The Stepfather” remake opening this Friday. The film stars that kid from The CW’s “Gossip Girl” show and that nice guy from The FX Channel’s “Nip/Tuck”, only here the nice guy ain’t all that nice. He’s practically evil. Murderously so, as it turns out. But really, when you’re trying to make the perfect family, what’s a little slaughter or two? The man’s just trying to strive for the American Dream, after all. Michael Harding (Penn Badgley) returns home from military school to find his mother (Sela Ward) happily in love and living with her new boyfriend, David (Dylan Walsh). As the two men get to know each other, Michael becomes more and more suspicious of the man who is always there with a helpful hand. Alynda Wheat's Beat Cop: In which Wentworth Miller, Cromartie, and Benjamin Button crash our sets

25 September 2009 2:32 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Come on, people, you never leave the perp with Wentworth Miller! That’s Article 96, Section 242, Clause 3 of the Procedural Code! Wait, wait. Before we get too shouty about last night’s Law & Order: Svu, let’s call the meeting to order and go over some Beat Cop business. At our last meeting, commenter Judy Woodruff (let’s just assume that’s an alias, and the PBS anchor is way busy with actual news) asked if we’re going to loop Southland (tonight at 9 on NBC) into our discussions. This brings up an excellent point, Coppers: What counts as a procedural? »

'Ninja Turtles' Actor Elias Koteas Isn't In 'Green Lantern' (Even If Wikipedia Says He Is)

24 September 2009 12:39 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Actor Elias Koteas might be best-known to Splash Page readers for his role as Casey Jones in the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movies, but when we were getting ready to speak to him about his upcoming film "Defendor" with Woody Harrelson, we noticed an interesting entry in his online resume. According to Wikipedia (not the most reliable source of information, we know), Koteas has a role in the live-action "Green Lantern" movie scheduled for release in 2011.

According to Koteas, the "Green Lantern" role is news to him.

"Am I in the movie?" asked Koteas when MTV Movies Editor Joshua Horowitz brought up the project's presence on his wiki-based resume.

After confirming that he hasn't heard a thing about the film, Koteas said that doesn't mean he wouldn't be willing to join the cast alongside star Ryan Reynolds.

"Sure, the more the better. I need the work," he laughed, adding, "Maybe they're confusing me with someone. »

Film: Review:Brief Interviews With Hideous Men

24 September 2009 12:03 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

For most of its running time, John Krasinski’s adaptation of David Foster Wallace’s short-story collection Brief Interviews With Hideous Men consists of little more than a series of monologues, and plays like some abstract theater exercise, hosted by a college coffeehouse. Except that this college is populated by the likes of Bobby Cannavale, Timothy Hutton, and Christopher Meloni—veteran actors each taking a turn embodying Krasinski’s careful reductions of Wallace’s loquacious bastards. And unlike the book, Krasinski’s adaptation has a single protagonist: Julianne Nicholson, playing a grad student who intends to examine the impact of ... »
