Tom Waits in 'The Hobbit'?

3 December 2009 9:10 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Hobbit film rumors haven’t exactly been in short supply, but here’s a new one that sounds interesting: Internationally-recognized singer, songwriter, and actor Tom Waits could be joining the cast.

The news comes from AICN-Downunder, which reports from what sounds like a trusted source that Waits is someone the production is seriously considering. AICN-Downunder previously claimed Brian Cox would be playing a dwarf in The Hobbit, a rumor that has yet to be confirmed. So far, only Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving, and Andy Serkis are confirmed as being in the cast.

Waits has released a number of albums, and his music is known for incorporating blues, jazz, and vaudeville. In addition, his singing voice is distinctive: critic Daniel Durchholz once described it as sounding, "like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car. »

Natalie Portman on Thor secrecy

2 December 2009 8:26 AM, PST | Filmonic.com | See recent Filmonic news »

It’s widely known that studios are highly protective of scripts, especially for films they are ploughing $150+ million into. Ian McKellen recently revealed that when he got his script for The Hobbit someone came round to his house and took it away to be shredded, and it seems Marvel has a similar paranoia regarding it’s [...] »

Allan Hyde and his friend Hadleyk

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear. Yes, we're serious.

Because we all previously enjoyed seeing Allan Hyde (Godric in True Blood) in his wolf T-shirts, above we have a still from a short film he did with his buddy Hadleyk called Smile. Hadleyk seems to film a lot of silliness and post it on his website. While Smile is safe for work, some of the videos he tweets definitely are not. And I'm not paying your therapy bills if you watch them. The abs in the teaser photo belong to Taylor Lautner, the 17-year-old werewolf from Twilight. He's had a weird week. His movie made another $66 million, setting another record. And he was on the cover of Rolling Stone, but the interviewer kept asking him if he was gay. And apparently, »

The Hobbit To Start Shooting In Summer 2010?

30 November 2009 8:46 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

One of the most eagerly anticipated and discussed upcoming movies is Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson’s upcoming adaptation of The Hobbit. Little snippets of sometimes true and sometimes false information keep rolling out almost like clockwork, with the last one reported on being just this past weekend when producer Peter Jackson talked about the fact that he’s been scouting shooting locations for The Hobbit, and confirmed the film would Not be coming to us in three-dimensions (thanks God, I say).

However, today we get some more information on The Hobbit, following and related to the news that the script for at least the first part is done and handed into the studio who seem to be happy with it (remember, the film is being split into two parts and released a year apart from one another). A quote from TheOneRing.net, which originated over at a German site called MovieReporter. »

Probably Hollywood’s most-anticipated post-Avatar blockbuster, The Hobbit looks like it is going to be slow off the starting blocks. According to Gandalf himself, Sir Ian McKellen, the shoot was originally expected to be underway in Spring 2010. Now Peter Jackson has given a more conservative estimate of starting in the middle of the year, quashing any hopes of getting our hands on any casting notes or on-set pics for a few more months. McKellen Slams Lucas Over Gay Portrayal

30 November 2009 4:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Gay actor Sir Ian McKellen has slammed British comedian Matt Lucas for his portrayal of homosexual characters - because he fears the camp comedy sketches fuel prejudices.

The openly gay comedian pokes fun at homosexuality in hit TV show Little Britain, playing a flamboyant Welshman who dresses in tight latex clothing and proudly proclaims himself "the only gay in the village."

But McKellen thinks such outrageous television skits only serve to publicise offensive stereotypes.

He says, "I have to confess that I am a little disquieted at times by the way that gays are portrayed, particularly on television. I know Matt Lucas will say that he is gay and it is not offensive but I don't think it gets the right message across. If you are gay you don't have to be camp."

And the veteran star wants the word "gay" to be dropped altogether in a bid to curb prejudices: "The word gay has become used as a derogatory term and this is something which education can help to resolve. Either that or we choose another word to describe ourselves. I rather like another G word - glorious.

"People come to know themselves at different times. I was 49 before I understood who I was. I think that if the world had been different when I was young, then I might have had the courage to come out sooner." »

Boyzone Slam Sex Stories About Late Stephen Gately

Ronan Keating, Mikey Graham, Keith Duffy, and Shane Lynch have reacted to gay model Georgi Dochev's sex stories about the last hours of their band mate in Boyzone, Stephen Gately. "The lads are horrified," a source close to the band began blasting the Bulgarian model at a tribute concert for Stephen in London on Sunday, November 29.

"It was a day for celebrating Step's life - not dwelling on the night of his death," the source went on detailing. The source, moreover, told The Sun that Boyzone's manager Louis Walsh was angry upon knowing Georgi sold the stories about the 33-year-old singer. "Everyone is just sick that this man is profiting from Stephen's death," the source added.

On November 29, Georgi came up with news that he was in bed with Stephen's gay partner Andrew Cowles while the singer lay dead in another room. "At 12 I got up. I went into the »

Peter Jackson Updates The Hobbit & Tintin

27 November 2009 1:55 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

We recently learned that the script was done for at least the first part of Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro’s highly anticipated adaptation of The Hobbit. It’s now in the hands of the studio, who Jackson says, “seem to be happy with it.”

Jackson talked, during a press conference for his drama The Lovely Bones, about the fact that he thought it’d be difficult to get back into the groove of writing “Lord of the Rings style” since it’s been about 8 years since they wrote the script for that trilogy. However, once they got started it was “easy,” said Jackson.

On top of that info about the first script being finished and handed in, Jackson spilled some more beans to the BBC, again during a press conference for The Lovely Bones. He talked about the fact that he’s been scouting locations in New Zealand »

Peter Jackson Discusses 'Tintin' and 'The Hobbit'

25 November 2009 12:37 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

In a new interview with the BBC, Peter Jackson expresses no concern about handing over the reins of The Hobbit to Guillermo del Toro, and talks about his own next step as a director, the 3-D animated Tintin. "Tintin is great. It's made," Jackson says of his co-production with fellow celluloid hero Steven Spielberg. "The movie is cut together and now [we] are turning it into a fully-rendered film".

The process of taking the edited footage and transforming it into the Tintin we'll see in theaters should take a little less than two years, meaning Jackson will be inordinately busy in the fall of 2011, talking both that film and The Hobbit, still scheduled for a December release that year. There's a chance it might be delayed - I'm speculating here - because of the thin ice under MGM's feet right now.

But Jackson doesn't think bringing in a new director, even »

Peter Jackson Updates The Hobbit and Tintin

25 November 2009 5:38 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

With his Lovely Bones opening next month, writer-director Peter Jackson spent some time talking with the British press about a few of his upcoming producing projects. One of the most-anticipated is The Hobbit, the sequel to Jackson's Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Jackson told In The News that an initial script has been delivered to the studio.

The Hobbit will be two movies and we've written the first script and delivered it to the studio who seem to be happy with it. We're now halfway through the second script and Philippa [Boyens], Fran [Walsh], Guillermo [Del Toro] and myself are doing the scripts and having great fun. It was an interesting experience because eight or nine years have passed since we wrote the Lord of the Rings screenplays and I was worried it'd be weird or hard or uncomfortable to go back there, but as soon as we started writing the scripts it was fun, »

First Script For The Hobbit Completed!

For most movies, this wouldn’t be major news, but for Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro’s highly anticipated The Hobbit, I make an exception.

Following in the footsteps of the successful, awesome and critically acclaimed Lord of the Rings trilogy, we wait in patience as the mastermind behind bringing the J.R.R. Tolkien lore to life works with another wonderfully talented man to bring the prequel novel to the big screen with a pair of films based on The Hobbit.

While we’re eagerly awaiting to find out which lucky actor will get the chance to portray the title character amidst other casting rumors, we do have an update on the status of the scripts.
