directed by David Mackenzie
2009, 97 minutes, USA
Anchor Bay Films
Maybe it's a misnomer to hail an Ashton Kutcher indie vehicle the week's highest recommendation (the case certainly won't be made here that it's more or less worthwhile viewing than Up, Lake Tahoe or Ballast), but Scottish director David Mackenzie and writer Jason Dean Hall's clever, pruriently entertaining satire about a sociopathic hipster grifter deserves a better shot at exposure—no pun intended—after the damning reviews it's had since Sundance. It's a film that's easy to misread and dismiss as superficial pap simply because its characters are prone to repulsively opportunistic behavior.

Who needs critics? Who needs experts? Since the dawn of the internet and the democratization of entertainment, who really needs someone to tell them what is good and what is not good? Clearly, the people who made up the list of nominees below -- the 18 million voters of the People's Choice Awards -- need some assistance. It is sad -- void of great drama such as Mad Men and full of teenie-bopper schlock like Twilight -- but also triumphant, as it makes me feel great about my own job security. Thank you America, for once again proving that you need me. The 2009 People's Choice Awards will air on January 6, 2010 on CBS. For more, including all of the music nominations, check out People's Choice.com. All of the television, film and web-related categories are below. Too many stars to fit in one frame: Anthony Mackie, Brooke Shields, Jennifer Aniston, David Cross, Liev Schrieber, Naomi Watts, Jeremy Sisto, Emmy Rossum, Julia Stiles, and Gaby Hoffmann are among the cast members taking a curtain call after performing in the 24 Hour Plays. Kevin Mazur/Getty Images. It has been an unusually starry fall on Broadway—Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig in A Steady Rain, Jude Law in Hamlet, and, later this month, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury in A Little Night Music, just to name a few. But rarely has there been such assemblage of big names on one Broadway stage as there was last night at the American Airlines Theater. Among the performers were Jennifer Aniston, David Cross, Billy Crudup, Rosario Dawson, John Krasinski, Ashton Kutcher, Eva Mendes, Demi Moore, Rosie Perez, Sam Rockwell, Liev Schrieber, Brooke Shields, Julia Stiles, Amber Tamblyn, and Naomi Watts. Not much in the way of new DVD releases this week unless you're a Pixar fan, but then hey... who isn't a Pixar fan? Up is by far the biggest release of the week (so big that no one really wanted to go up against it) and I fully expect to hear reports of it breaking Blu-ray sales records at some point in the near future. Cars and Monsters, Inc. are also out on Blu-ray this week, along with both Heat and Red Heat. (That's called synergy.) Other new discs include The Ugly Truth starring Gerard Butler and Katherin Heigl, Spread starring Ashton Kutcher, and the 2008 Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner Ballast. What will you be renting or buying this week? Up [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) The Ugly Truth [3] (DVD, Blu-ray [4]) Ballast [5] In The Loop [6] (Canada only) Spread [7] (DVD, Blu-ray [8]) Ink [9] The Echo [10] (DVD, Blu-ray [11]) American Virgin [12] Summer's Moon [13] The Accidental Husband [14] The Merry Gentleman [15] Mamma Mia! »

Demi Moore is pretty much the first person that people think of when the word "cougar" is tossed around (maybe the second after Madonna), but Moore isn't crazy about the term, and would rather be called a puma. We're surprised she or her tweet-happy husband Ashton Kutcher haven't posted a slew of annoying tweets about it yet.In the new issue of W magazine (on which she graces the cover and looks almost frighteningly hot for a woman of 47) Moore says, "I'm certainly not the first person to be in a relationship with a younger man, but somehow I was plucked out as a bit of a poster girl. I don't know why that is. But I just kind of step back s ... »

After last week's jam-packed release schedule led by "G.I. Joe," we're given an opportunity to breath today with only two new theatrical titles coming to market, along with an assortment of action-filled catalog offerings making their way to Blu-ray. This is your DVD Report for Tuesday, November 9.
Disney's Pixar was flying high after the critically and commercially acclaimed "Wall-e," so naturally they looked to the skies for their next animated outing, "Up." The film focuses on Carl Fredricksen, an elderly shut-in who aims to pay homage to his late wife by relocating to the top of a South American paradise the couple had always dreamed of visiting. Equipping his home with hundreds of helium balloons, the house lifts off its foundation and floats away, inadvertently taking with it a young wilderness scout who grows attached to the grumpy septuagenarian at the start of a grand adventure.

Jennifer Aniston was in La last week for her stylist's wedding, but she popped up in NYC last night to take part in the annual 24 Hour Plays on Broadway. She joined a handful of actor couples for the evening, including Emily Blunt and John Krasinki as well as Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts. Demi Moore was a lot more covered up than her recent W cover, as she posed with husband Ashton Kutcher. Jennifer joined her fellow thespians onstage to sing "Yellow Submarine" and take part in the hastily-written theater exercise, which was held to benefit arts in education programs in public schools. She took her bow next to a similarly-dressed Brooke Shields before moving on for some after-hours fun with Ashton and Demi. View 35 Photos › To see more from the event, just read more. Jennifer Aniston took to the stage in New York City on Monday night to show off her singing skills in a star-studded theatre event.
The former Friends actress signed up to appear in The 24-Hour Plays, a series of six short works which are written, rehearsed and performed in just one day. The gruelling task gives actors less than 12 hours to polish their performance before the curtain goes up.
Aniston appeared in Ramen Noodle alongside Brooke Shields, and showed off her vocal ability with a rendition of Beatles classic Yellow Submarine.
Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore also appeared in the evening of short plays, as well as Naomi Watts, Liev Schreiber, Sam Rockwell and Julia Stiles. »

Up I just reviewed the Blu-ray version of this release and may I just say it is worth every penny. Pixar films look phenomenal in high-definition and the word "flawless" is by no means a stretch. Along with my review I have also included a clip from the new animated short "Dug's Special Mission," so just click here for the video and full review details.
Oh, and if you want to buy it in store you can get a $10 off coupon right here. Monsters, Inc. Yup, it's Pixar week on Blu-ray as Monsters, Inc. joins Up as well as a gift pack version of Cars and this one too manages to impress greatly. There are a few new features, which I detailed in my review and I also included a sneak peek at the new roundtable feature in my review right here. »

Demi Moore thinks the label "cougar" people address to her because she weds much younger actor Ashton Kutcher doesn't fit her and so prefers to be called Puma instead. In an interview with W's December issue, she says "I'm certainly not the first person to be in a relationship with a younger man, but somehow I was plucked out as a bit of a poster girl. I don't know why that is. But I just kind of step back sometimes and say, 'There is some reason, and what is it that I have to share in a positive way? ... I'd prefer to be called a Puma."

Demi Moore is on the cover of December's W wearing a festive holiday getup. The reigning Queen of Twitter talks about (what else?) being a cougar and how great Ashton Kutcher is. Feels like we've heard this all before from the actress, but let's do it anyway. While everyone considers Demi to be the O.G. cougar, she doesn't see it that way. "I'm certainly not the first person to be in a relationship with a younger man, but somehow I was plucked out as a bit of a poster girl," she says. "I don't know why that is. Demi Moore doesn’t understand how she became the poster child for cougars, the pop-culture term used for older women who date younger men. "I’m certainly not the first person to be in a relationship with a younger man, but somehow I was plucked out as a bit of a poster girl," Moore says in the Dec. issue of W magazine. "I don’t know why that is. I’d prefer to be called a Puma." Moore, 47, married Ashton Kutcher, 31, in 2005. She has three children, including actress Rumer Willis, with ex-husband Bruce Willis »

Demi Moore struck a gorgeous pose for the cover of December's W. She's the latest member of her extended family to pose for the publication, following Bruce Willis's saucy spread with his new wife Emma Hemming earlier this year. Demi is out and about promoting her movie with David Duchovny, The Joneses, as well as Happy Tears with Parker Posey. She sat down with the magazine to chat about her marriage to Ashton Kutcher and what she thinks of being labeled a cougar. Here's more: On being married to a younger man: "I’m certainly not the first person to be in a relationship with a younger man, but somehow I was plucked out as a bit of a poster girl. . . I don’t know why that is. But I just kind of step back sometimes and say, 'There is some reason, and what is it that I have »

"I don’t know why that is. Demi stays in shape by doing Pilates, yoga, and working out to P90X DVDs, a butt-busting home-fitness regimen that features cardio, strength-training and yoga programs. In addition, Moore follows an organic diet and practices portion control. »
