Vampire Diaries: The CW has confirmed to us that Kelly Hu is the latest lucky bitc...er, fine actress to cozy up to the brothers Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley). Kelly just tweeted: "1st time in Atlanta 2 shoot Vampire Diaries. Thot I was going to get mugged on the way home from Whole Foods. That's ok, I know karate." Nice! Kelly will be appearing in flashbacks as an apothecary named Pearl, but contrary to other reports, she doesn't go door to door and accidentally try to sell vervain to Katherine (Nina Dobrev). We'll first see her on Jan. 28. Nicole Richie Show: The former Simple Life star and new mom has written on her website about her just-announced new ABC series: "I am creating a half... »

The Vampire Diaries doesn't return with new episodes until January 14.
But at least The CW hit is giving fans a lot of casting news to discuss in the meantime.
Last week, it was announced that Dexter star James Remar would appear on the show in the key role of Stefan and Damon's father, Giuseppe Salvatore.
Now, we can confirm - via the actress' own Twitter account - that Kelly Hu been cast in the possibly recurring role of Pearl.
Earlier this month, the network sent out a casting notice that described Pearl as:
Early 30's, Chinese, attractive. Seen in flashbacks, she is an apothecary for the town of Mystic Falls. Going door to door on sales visits she stops at the Salvatorre residence and meets Katherine. Unaware of what Katherine is, she tries to sell her vervain and quickly finds herself in danger.
Hu has guest-starred on a number of shows, »

Chicago - We’re approaching an entertainment apocalypse as the new four horsemen arrive on the hill: Redbox, Comcast, Marketeers and Spencer Pratt. In a decade, we’re going to be watching puppet shows on network TV and not even Jeff Dunham level puppet shows. But let’s give a run down of trainwrecks that will claim the lives of entertainment business models.
Redbox is a simple concept - a kiosk that allows you to rent a hot new DVD title for a $1 a day. There will be 20,000 of them across the country in grocery stores, drugstores and Wal-marts by the end of the year. They’re a mini-Blockbuster that’s doesn’t required a zit-faced dreamer to run the register. What’s the problem with Redbox? It’s killing to DVD sales market faster than Blockbuster and Netflix. Having Redbox inside Wal-Mart wrecks the impulse buying temptation of the giant sale bin. »

Every seven years, 30 of the world’s most deadly assassins take over a random city and compete for a ten million dollar prize. The rules are simple. The contestants have twenty-four hours to be the sole survivor, if not a tracking device implanted in their abdomen will detonate. Let the game begin.
If you’re a fan of action blockbusters like Transporter or Crank than The Tournament should excite you. The film is ninety minutes of explosions, slow-motion, 300-style fight sequences, and shoot-em-up action. But what really sets The Tournament apart from most films in this genre is the gratuitous gore, hence the appeal to fright fans. There are plenty of exploding heads/dismemberments and because the tournament takes place in a random city, there is no shortage of civilian casualties. The body count is high and unlike cartoonish films like Transformers, the mayhem is bloody and visceral.
But if you’re like me, »

Joliet, Il - Dan Aykroyd is on a mission from vodka. The Blues Brother is cruising around the country in a Damnation Alley Rv promoting his Crystal Skull premium vodka. He rolled into my town and I was compelled to see the man.
He was appearing at a liquor store on a Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. What sort of crowd could he draw? I showed up at 1 p.m. with my four month old designated driver. There was already 400 people in line. Another 300 people end up behind us. Luckily Dan’s traveling partner announced that even though Dan was schedule to leave at 4:30, he’d be signing his bottles until the last person went home happy.
Why not? Each bottle cost $50. I’ve been told that there’s only two types of vodka in the world: Good vodka and vodka that makes you go blind and piss blood. »

Chicago – Many editions of the DVD Round-Up have featured a different genre and focus for each title within it. This week seems a little more thematically linked as we have a trio of foreign horror films and a few more independent films than usual. Of course, there has to a holiday comedy to spice things up.
Consider this column informational with synopsis, tech specs, and special features info for titles that might go otherwise unnoticed, but if you’re looking for more critical opinion, we covered “Sauna” when it played at the EU Film Fest, “Medicine For Melancholy” when it was available on IFC Direct, and “Nothing Like the Holidays” when it played in theaters.
“P” and “The Tournament” were released on October 20th, 2009

The Tournament Quick Thoughts: The easiest question to ask before ever watching a second of The Tournament is why would the world's top 30 assassins get involved in a tournament in which the last person alive is the winner? Of course, you could say "the money," but these people are in a rather lucrative business where only a select few are involved, which would mean their income per job can't be all that bad. On top of that, just imagine if you are the one assassin that sits out the tournament, which is held every seven years, you and whoever ends up winning are now the top dogs in the industry. You're naming your own price. Bad guys who want someone dead are have only two options. Sounds like reason enough to me to sit out of a tournament you only have a 1-in-30 chance of winning.
However, let's say you get involved in said tournament, »

Of all the new releases, we’re particularly interested in the Blu-ray versions of movies and TV shows such as Blood: The Last Vampire, Easy Rider and the first seasons of Hawaii Five-o and Vega$. Plus, I think some movie with lots of robots, explosions and Megan Fox also came out this week as well.
Check them out.

The film that opened the Screamfest Film Festival this year The Tournament will be released on DVD beginning October 20th. A film with a plethora of big names including: Ving Rhames, Kelly Hu, and Robert Carlyle and a whole slew of action sequences means that this film will be a must have for 2009. Don't believe me? Then check out the trailer for The Tournament below and find out why this film was chosen as the premiere film at the Sff.

The Tournament may turn out to be one of the best action films of the year, and practically no one has heard of it. The title refers to a competition that has the world's best assassins pitted against each other in a random city, with the last man (or woman) standing the victor. It’s a very cool concept, and thanks to actor and martial artist Scott Adkins' fan page, we have this fight scene, between Adkins and Kelly Hu, the latter of which is protecting a priest (Robert Carlyle)... »

The Tournament is one of the year's best action movies. Yup, I said it. It releases on Tuesday, and I'll have a full review up on the same day, but for now trust me when I say this is one very cool and bloody romp. Unbelievable and highly implausible sure, but filled with fantastic fights, gunplay, and bloody squib-filled bodies. Every seven years thirty of the best assassins in the world descend on a small town where they proceed to fight to the death for a giant cash prize. Each player is surgically embedded with a tracker and given a handheld Gps so they can see the other assassins. The town is wired with closed-circuit cameras, the phone lines are rerouted to prevent pesky interference from law enforcement, and a room filled with wealthy gamblers watches the whole thing on CCTV and places their bets on who will win this year's contest. Screen Rant has been tracking the Scott Mann-directed action thriller The Tournament for a few months. The independent film by the UK director has been shopping for a distributor for awhile now and even opened L.A. Scream Fest recently in hopes of getting picked up for Us distribution. It would appear the struggling Weinstein Company has done just that but unfortunately it will be for DVD release only and it comes out this Tuesday, October 20th.
The Tournament stars Ving Rhames (Mission Impossible), Kelly Hu (X-Men 2), Ian Somerhalder (Lost), and Scott Adkins (The Bourne Ultimatum) as a group of elite assassins that converge on an unsuspecting town to compete in a deadly game of King of the Mountain where the last man standing wins $10 million dollars and the title of the world’s greatest assassin. Robert Carlyle (Stargate Universe) is a priest that gets unwittingly dragged into the »

Once every seven years, thirty of the world’s most deadly assassins gather together and fight for the grand prize of ten million dollars – there can be only one winner, only one survivor.
Normally this genre of Battle Royale-esque movie is set on an exotic island, or a mystic m’larkey temple, and here’s why I knew I was in for something different right from the start, The Tournament is set in no-m’larkey-at-all working class Middleborough, in the rainy North of England. Scott Mann’s action packed debut feature stars Robert Carlyle as a drunken priest mistaken for a hitman, and the beautiful Kelly Hu as a real hit woman. For a $12 million budget, you get a good bang for your buck. There are a »

The Tournament is a high octane, blood-bathed, British action thriller starring Ving Rhames, Robert Carlyle, Kelly Hu, Ian Sommerhalder, Liam Cunningham, Scott Adkins and Sebastien Foucan.
Scott Mann directs a screeplay by Jonathan Frank, Nick Rowntree and Gary Young.
Every 7 years in an unsuspecting town, The Tournament takes place. A battle royale between 30 of the world’s deadliest assassins. The last man standing receiving the $10,000,000 cash prize and the title of Worlds No 1 (which itself carries the legendary million dollar a bullet price tag). The Tournament is set up by a group of sick high stake billionaires who watch the mayhem unfold via CCTV and bet on its outcome.

In “The Tournament”, Robert Carlyle plays a small-town priest who gets unwittingly dragged into a bloody tournament taking place covertly in his town. Okay, it’s not all that covert, there are guys running around with sniper rifles and bazookas trying to off each other. Actually, it’s pretty obvious, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but there you have it. Here’s a clip from Scott Mann’s actioner “The Tournament”, featuring Carlyle’s character as he finds himself in the crosshairs of some killer types. Whoever said "there ain't no such thing as a free lunch" obviously never worked in the movie business, because there certainly is such a thing as a free lunch, as I've experienced on many occasions. The best part about these free lunches is, usually, you get to have them with actors or directors or other movie folk, which is exactly what happened when I went down to the Paramount lot for a press lunch with some of the folks that brought us Friday the 13th, Part VII: The New Blood and Friday the 13th, Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. Both of these films - the last of the series that Paramount produced - are being released in new Deluxe Editions on September 15 and I was invited down to the Paramount lot for a lunch with actors Kane Hodder, who played Jason Voorhes in both films, Vc Dupree, who played the »

I wasn't even aware of the film The Tournament until Peter pointed out the trailer this evening. Now that I am, I can see it being a crazy, fun time totally untethered to any sort of reality. That is, one of my preferred action movie modes. The Tournament posits that every seven years in a small town, the world's greatest assassins come together to compete for a tremendous cash prize and great renown. It's the cast that might get your attention, though: Ving Rhames, Kelly Hu, Scott Adkins, and, as the priest caught in the middle of the action, Robert Carlyle. Check out the trailer after the break. I thought of Smokin' Aces as the trailer started to run, but The Tournament seems intent on delivering a more pure form of action. The whole deal is that each assassin is fitted with a tracker and ID device. One of those »
