What's On: The Land of Poliwood

2 November 2009 4:00 PM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

On the eve of Edward Norton's By the People: The Election of Barack Obama's HBO premiere, Showtime rolls out Barry Levinson's Poliwood, a documentary examining the positive and negative effects that celebrities have on politics. The program revisits last year's Democratic and Republican national conventions to explore the public's take on movie stars' political outspokenness. The 90-minute film includes conversations with Ellen Burstyn, Susan Sarandon, Sting, Elvis Costello, Annette Bening, Tim Daly (who also produced the documentary) and many others. »

Movie Stars Featured In Levinson Documentary

2 November 2009 1:32 PM, PST | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

Producer/director Barry Levinson takes a look at the convergence of celebrity and politics in the documentary Poliwood, which airs tonight (Monday) on Showtime. Featured in the film is a raft of Hollywood celebrities, including Susan Sarandon, Spike Lee, Ellen Burstyn, Tim Daly, Anne Hathaway and the late Ron Silver. Levinson, a celebrity in his own right with films such as Rain Man and the political satire Wag the Dog and with TV shows like Homicide: Life on the Street and Oz, attempts to show not only what happens when celebrities come together with politicians but also with ordinary folks. Most critics suggest that the result is confusing. Boston Herald critic Mark A. Perigard says that Levinson's documentary is simply too simplistic. Levinson, he notes, calls his film an "essay." That, says Perigard, is "like calling the back of a cereal box a novel." The Wall Street Journal's Dorothy Rabinowitz comments that Levinson presents "a tonnage of vague pronouncements." Ellen Gray in the Philadelphia Daily News remarks that "for all the eye-rolling that goes on as noncelebrities weigh in on what they believe is Hollywood's undue influence, Poliwood doesn't pack much of a punch." And Alessandra Stanley concludes in the New York Times: "Poliwood feeds our prurient fascination with celebrities' fascination with politics, but Mr. Levinson's thesis is undermined by an election process that he bemoaned but didn't film." »

Tim Daly Makes It Clear: He’s No ‘Baby Hater’

2 November 2009 5:00 AM, PST | People - CelebrityBabies | See recent People - CelebrityBabies news »

ABC

If there’s anything Tim Daly would like to clear up, it’s that he, by no means, dislikes babies! After joking that he hated working with infants earlier this year, the Private Practice actor — who doesn’t “want to be known as a baby hater” — tells Parade that the comment was a complete misunderstanding.

“It was only true in the sense that I feel bad for the little ones on a film set because they’re babies and they should be at home playing and crawling around on the floor,” he clarifies. “Actually, I love babies, I love being with them. »

Aff Review: Poliwood

1 November 2009 12:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

It's not uncommon to hear people discussing -- or complaining about -- the ways in which Hollywood celebrities are involved in politics, whether they're airing their opinions during a concert or speaking in public on behalf of a politician. Barry Levinson (Diner, Good Morning Vietnam) thought this was an interesting enough topic to address in his documentary Poliwood, which focuses on the 2008 national Democratic and Republican conventions. Unfortunately, the documentary shows us little that we haven't already seen, and tends to preach to the converted.

Poliwood is subtitled "a Barry Levinson film essay," which signals us that this will be a more personal style of documentary. Levinson opens the movie with shots from his 1990 feature film Avalon and uses this footage to discuss the ways American lives have changed because of television. His focus is on the Creative Coalition, a non-partisan organization of celebrities that focuses on issues such as arts education. »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Superman Batman: Public Enemies’ Features Superhero Dream Duo

15 October 2009 11:13 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Batman and Superman have more in common than you might think and it’s not just that they both wear capes and try to stop evil from triumphing over good. The Dark Knight and The Man of Steel are both forced to hide their true selves and deal with significant personal demons. Superman has the power to destroy the world, something he has to rein in every day, and Batman struggles with his moral code, one that keeps him from getting the true revenge he needs for the death of his parents.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0

The comic book writers of Batman and Superman recognized that these two popular heroes could make an interesting duo years ago and started teaming them up in printed form, including a popular Jeph Loeb/Ed McGuinness comic series/graphic novel that inspired the latest DC Universe Animated Original Movie “Superman Batman: Public Enemies”. Review: 'Superman/Batman: Public Enemies'

4 October 2009 10:19 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

For the last 25-30 years, writers and artists have been having a wonderful time contrasting the differences between Superman and Batman. Prior to that, they were both happy-go-lucky super-heroes, brothers-in-arms with nary a problem twixt them. The team of Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness really explored the dichotomy between the icons in Superman/Batman, the modern day version of World’s Finest Comics. Their opening story arc, “Public Enemies”, was a major turning point in the Dcu, bringing down the curtain on one set of stories and kick starting threads that played out across the line for several years.

Any storyline that involved, could not possibly be well-adapted to an animated feature considering the lack of context most viewers would need to have. As a result, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies the direct-to-dvd release from Warner Premier, now on sale, had to make some modifications. Unfortunately, they were not all for the better. »

DVD Review: ‘Superman/Batman: Public Enemies’

29 September 2009 3:30 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

The animation departments of DC and Warner brothers has been on quite a hot streak since last year’s release of Justice League: New Frontier. Their releases of both Wonder Woman and Green Lantern films over the last year were both critically well reviewed and did well in the stores. Since New Frontier, this project is the first story that was taken almost directly from a published storyline, originally written by Jeph Loeb.

The great part about Jeph Loeb’s Public Enemies is he teamed up with artist Ed McGuinness, who is best known for his animated art style. This made the announcement of the direct-to-dvd feature all the more exciting. Not only was the source material well done, but casting director Andrea Romano was also able to bring back the dream team of DC voice actors to return to characters they helped make immortal.

The actor talks about voicing Superman in this brand new animated DVD

Tim Daly is an actor who is well-versed in both live-action and animated work. After providing the voice of the Man of Steel for the animated Superman TV series, Daly branched out into live-action work with roles in such hits as Joe Hackett on Wings and his current TV gig as Dr. Pete Weber on Private Practice. Weber has returned to his animated roots, though, providing the voice for Superman once again with Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, which just hit the shelves on DVD and Blu-ray today, September 29. We were provided with a new interview session that Daly conducted and here's what he had to say about this new film and voicing Superman in general.

"Superman/Batman: Public Enemies," the latest animated feature based on the DC Universe, arrives on shelves today.

Based on the first story arc from Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness "Superman/Batman" comic book series, "Superman/Batman: Public Enemies," chronicles Lex Luthor's rise to power in the White House and his scheme to put Superman and Batman on the wrong side of the law (including a $1 billion bounty on their heads that has every villain in the Dcu looking for them).

The film also features a who's who of voice actors from DC's animated (and video game) history. Kevin Conroy, who has become the voice of Batman over the last decade in various animated series featuring Bruce Wayne's alter ego (as well as the "Batman: Arkham Asylum" game), reprises his role as the Dark Knight. Superman/Batman: Public Enemies DVD Review

26 September 2009 7:07 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Superman and Batman have long been the top favorites in the DC Universe - and the only things fans love more than seeing them in their respective adventures is seeing them team up to take on evil. In fact, fans love the Superman/Batman pairing so much that in 2003, DC Comics launched an ongoing Superman/Batman comic book series as a reboot of the historic series World’s Finest Comics, which ran from 1941 to 1986.

The first six issues of the new Superman/Batman featured a story called “Public Enemies”, which was written by Batman scribe Jeph Loeb (The Long Halloween, Hush) and illustrated by Superman artist Ed McGuinness. The story centered on Superman and Batman taking on President Lex Luthor (you read that right) and a whole bunch of DC villains and heroes, who all believe that Superman is responsible for a Kryptonite meteor careening towards Earth. Exclusive: The Voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, Talks ‘Superman/Batman: Public Enemies’

24 September 2009 1:15 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Though many have thrown on the cowl and rubber boots on both the silver and TV screens, there has always been a constant when it comes to the voice of the animated Dark Knight, and his name is Kevin Conroy. For nearly 20 years, Conroy has been the voice of the bat in shows like Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League, and Batman Beyond to video games like Batman: Arkham Asylum. Now, he gets to don the animated cape once more in Superman/Batman: Public Enemies.

Not only does Conroy return as Batman, but legendary voice actors Clancy Brown and Tim Daly return as both Lex Luthor and Superman. We got a chance to talk to Kevin about his return to the role, and working opposite Daly in what he likes to call “a buddie cop movie” with capes.

Kevin Conroy Gets Vocal in Superman/Batman: Public Enemies

23 September 2009 6:22 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The actor who portrays the voice of Batman talks about this new animated DVD

Superman/Batman: Public Enemies will bring the next animated adventure of both Superman and Batman to DVD and Blu-ray on September 29, with Tim Daly voicing Superman and Kevin Conroy voicing Batman. Conroy, who has provided the animated Dark Knight's voice for almost two decades, recently spoke about this new DVD, and here's what he had to say.

You've been doing this role for nearly 19 years. Are there still challenges to doing the voice of Batman?

Kevin Conroy: I guess the biggest challenge to doing any kind of animation voice work is that you only have your voice to tell the story. And you want to keep it real and you don't want to get cartoony, especially now because the audiences are much more sophisticated. Anything over the top is going to read over the top. »

Private Practice Season Three: An In-Depth Preview

23 September 2009 9:56 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

The bad news: Private Practice does not premiere its third season until October 1.

The good news: Thanks to the in-depth preview below, there's plenty to talk about until then.

E! News spoke with Kate Walsh and other series stars ths week, inquiring about various upcoming storylines for the episodes ahead, such as who will actually be in charge of Oceanside Wellness. Let's take a gander at what they had to say...

Walsh, on Addison's family: "I'm not sure who's going to come over from the East Coast, but I'm sure they're going to be good and Wasp-y and awesome. When Grant Show came on last year as my brother, it was fun for me to see Addison in that lower-status position, as someone's daughter or little sister. It's really fun to play because she's such a fierce and agro personality at work, and then to see her smacked down at home is fun. »
