Top 7 Movies That Make The End of the World Sound Hilarious

13 November 2009 2:18 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

Somehow, the end of the world has become a form of entertainment. Instead of being scared out of our wits of apocalyptic thoughts, we enjoy plunking down $10 to watch them become realized by big budget blockbusters. Hollywood serves it up, however: whole cities are destroyed, hundreds of thousands of people die, the fate of mankind is brought into question, and sometimes, Randy Quaid becomes our savior.

Which brings us to a certain theme that has been continued through a legacy of doomsday movies – they’re funny as hell. More unintentional than not, these movies are loaded with goofy movie milestones that make the blockbusters seem like gargantuan scaled jokes, with their characters, dialogue, and special moments serving as a type of punch line. Many disaster movies seem to be plagued by an air of idiocy that moves from one big budget movie to the next, »

Rossum Upset By Manson/McGowan Comparison

13 November 2009 11:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Emmy Rossum turned frosty during a radio interview in Los Angeles on Thursday when the host suggested her romance with rocker Adam Duritz was like Marilyn Manson dating Rose McGowan.

The U.S. media has been critical of the pretty 23 year old's relationship with the 45-year-old Counting Crows frontman, and the Poseidon star decided enough was enough when radio presenter Valentine likened the romance to that of goth-rocker Manson and actress McGowan.

Rossum, who started dating Duritz this summer after splitting from her husband, took exception to the comparison, stating, "No, no, no, no..." before begging the DJ to change the topic.

She said, "How about my movie...? Anything but my personal life."

And when Valentine pressed her further about the odd romance, suggesting Duritz, whose past girlfriends have included Mandy Moore and Courteney Cox, wouldn't be the obvious choice of mate for young stars, Rossum quipped, "I'm much more mysterious than you know." »

Q&A: Emmy Rossum Plans to Name Her Children Oscar, Tony, and Grammy

13 November 2009 8:09 AM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Photograph at left by Adam Kuehl. Do you remember what you were doing when you were seven years old? When I was that age, I was playing with Star Wars action figures and seeing how much Bubblicious I could cram into my mouth. But not Emmy Rossum. At the tender age of seven, she was making her professional operatic debut. She performed in Carmen at New York's Metropolitan Opera, and The Damnation of Faust at Carnegie Hall. She shared the stage with Luciano Pavarotti and Plácido Domingo, acting in dozens of productions in six different languages, all before she turned 18. Emmy Rossum is living proof that you probably wasted your adolescence. She's also done pretty well for herself as a young adult. Remember when child actors used to burn out on drugs and become tabloid fodder? Rossum decided to skip the Drew Barrymore fuck-all-of-you-i-want-more-pain-meds stage of her career and move directly into making movies. »

Rossum Opens Up About Secret Marriage - And Divorce

12 November 2009 5:31 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Emmy Rossum kept her failed marriage a closely-guarded secret - because she didn't want the union to be picked apart in the press.

The Phantom of the Opera star spent a year as Mrs. Justin Siegel - and even her biggest fans had no idea until the pair split this summer and began divorce proceedings.

Speaking candidly for the first time about her secret marriage, Rossum told Los Angeles radio DJ Valentine, "It's hard to have a private life and keep it private and hope that people don't pick you apart and that's kind of what's difficult about this job."

Siegel is now seeking to end the union, citing irreconcilable differences, and, according to court documents, the producer is asking his estranged wife to pay for the cost of the divorce - and spousal support.

But Rossum, who is now dating rocker Adam Duritz, insists she wants nothing in the divorce settlement: "I'm not asking for anything except freedom, so I can move on to another chapter in my life and find happiness." »

Rossum Not Ready To Follow Rihanna's Lead And Go Public With Violence Story

12 November 2009 5:31 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Emmy Rossum had a very special reason to publicly thank Rihanna for speaking out about domestic abuse - because she too is a victim.

The Poseidon star took to her Twitter.com blog to praise the R&B star for her bravery after Rihanna agreed to be interviewed about her infamous attack at the hands of ex-boyfriend Chris Brown.

The singer's candid conversation aired on TV in America last week (05-06Nov09), and Rossum was among the first celebrities to salute her.

She wrote, "Just saw the first half of the interview of (newswoman) Diane Sawyer speaking to Rihanna about domestic violence. She speaks honestly, bravely. So many of my friends have experienced this, it's very close to my heart. I urge young women - & really women of any age - to watch it."

And the Poseidon star used the blog to encourage domestic abuse victims not to suffer in silence, even providing the number for a support service.

And now Rossum has taken a step closer to her own big domestic abuse reveal, after appearing on Los Angeles radio show Valentine in the Morning on Thursday and admitting she's more than just a concerned star.

Asked what compelled her to post her comments online by host Valentine, who suggested she hadn't suffered the same brutality as Rihanna, the actress shot back, "You don't know that I haven't."

The DJ stuck with the story and asked Rossum, "Would you have come forward if you had been in her spot like that?" prompting the actress to stumble over her words, stating, "Like she (Rihanna) said, there's a lot of shame that comes with somebody hurting you and you take a lot of responsibility for it and it's very confusing and upsetting..."

Valentine then asked the star if she had a domestic violence story she'd like to share with his listeners.

Nervous Rossum said, "I'm just not at a point in my life where I'm ready to talk about it." »

Cancelling "Dollhouse" disappointed a lot of Joss Whedon fans when Fox announced that it had pulled the plug, but Eliza Dushku felt the brunt of the decision as hard as anyone. She faced her Twitter followers with the news today and a sad smiley.

Mike Tyson, meanwhile, reportedly faced a paparazzo, landing at least one good punch, and Kirstie Alley has his back in Twitter-Wood. There were a few great pics today in the feed, too, including a shot from MoMA's new Tim Burton exhibit and Sarah Silverman's birthday tribute to her show's multi-talented producer, director and writer Rob Schrab, better known to any comic book readers out there as the creator of "Scud: The Disposable Assassin." Check those out after the jump and find out which "Twilight" actor visiting Alex Rodriguez's home. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for November 12, 2009.

The Week in Film: Oscar Bait

12 November 2009 9:02 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Why, hello, folks! Another week means another week closer to December, which means it’s another week closer to Oscar bait movies. Aren’t you curious? I know you are, so let’s begin!

First up, we have 2012. It’s one of those natural disaster movies, but this time, on a global scale. The whole thing is based on the end of the world that in turn is based on the Mayan calendar. Expect super visual effects in the likes of things blowing up, giant tsunamis, raining meteors, skyscrapers collapsing, and Godzilla. Oh wait, scratch that last one.

Okay, sure this isn’t Oscar bait. But still, if you’re feeling like July in November, go for it! Oh, yeah, 2012 stars John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Oliver Platt, and Amanda Peet.

The second of the two wide releases this week is Pirate Radio. In the 1960s, a bunch of DJs went on a boat, »
