MattCanada here with another week of homo classics. Since I started writing this weekly column about a month ago, I have focused on films which have not been Oscar contenders and not featured the actresses which Nathaniel, me, and all the readers of this website respect (read: worship in a cult-like fashion). So on to Cabaret!
Liza Minnelli's Oscar winning role as Sally Bowles may well be the gayest Oscar win of all time. Now I am not a big Liza fan, actually I actively dislike her in anything else, but in Cabaret she gives one of the most amazing performances in the history of cinema in the greatest movie musical of all time. Not to be hyperbolic or anything, but Liza's Sally and Cabaret are earth shatteringly good. Liza is hardly the only reason to love Cabaret. I officially declare this the year of Kristen Bell. She's everywhere lately, proving there's a lot more to her than the soothing voice of Gossip Girl, so it's only natural that she'd come out of the shadows of voiceover work — and in a big way.
The Veronica Mars star will be seen in a handful of new movies this season, starting with Couples Retreat, which opened this weekend, and co-stars Vince Vaughn and Jason Bateman (who, like Bell, was the star of another insanely amazing television show that for some godforsaken reason only lasted three seasons: Arrested Development).
But enough of dwelling on the past: It was just announced that Bell has been cast as Christina Aguilera's rival in a new musical feature, Burlesque, which also stars Cher, Stanley Tucci and Twilight's Cam Gigandet. But back to the main point: Kristen Bell. Doing burlesque.

Remember that burlesque movie starring Christina Aguilera? Well, it's happening – and not only has Cher been added to the cast (yes, remember Cher?) as a nightclub owner, but The Hollywood Reporter now tells us that sweet, innocent Kristen Bell is going to play Aguilera's rival. Oh yeah – it's on! Cristina Aguilera's big-screen Burlesque debut is already a pretty interesting mix. We've got the slight girl with the powerful pipes, plus Cher returning to Hollywood as a nightclub owner and Stanley Tucci as the man who turns Aguilera's small-town girl "from bumpkin to bombshell." (Please tell me she's living in a lonely world.) But now, in a pretty wild twist, The Hollywood Reporter posts that Kristen Bell is joining the action as her rival.
As the story goes, Aguilera's girl has "a big-town voice" and "finds love and success in a Los Angeles neo-burlesque club, reminiscent of the nightclub in Bob Fosse's Cabaret." First up, Kristen Bell will appear opposite Christina Aguilera in the musical drama Burlesque, not to be confused with that Showgirls sequel we talked about the other day. Kristen Bell will sing and dance to get her spotlight back in "Burlesque". The latest news related to the actress best known for her title role in TV series "Veronica Mars" unraveled that she has signed on to join the cast of the musical drama for Screen Gems, and is set to star as the rival of Christina Aguilera's character.

Look out Christina Aguilera, soon to be actor who we didn't know had any acting chops, you're about to run into all of 5'1" 90 lb. (soaking wet) Kristen Bell. That's the premise of the new Steve Antin-directed drama Burlesque. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kristen Bell is going to star as Christina Aguilera's rival in Screen Gems' Burlesque.
The film is being directed by Steve Antin.
In the movie, a small-town girl (Aguilera) with a magnificent voice "finds love and success in a Los Angeles neo-burlesque club, reminiscent of the nightclub in Bob Fosse's Cabaret."
Bell will play the role of Nikki. She is sharp tongued lead dancer and the main attraction at the club. She can't handle it when Aguilera's character finds herself in the spotlight.
Cher is cast as the nightclub owner. Stanley Tucci will play he man who helps turn Aguilera's character into bombshell.
The film will start shooting November 9. Its release is planned for Thanksgiving 2010.

The latest rage are musicals, as all the best actors seem to be leaning towards them. Okay, it's a bit of an exaggeration, but slightly true. The latest victim -- don't take that in a bad way -- is Stanley Tucci, who has agreed to join the cast of Burlesque. To be honest, this project was in need of some testosterone.

The most amazing thing about Beyoncé's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" video isn't the dancing, the leotards, the mesmerizing movement of the Queen B's hips or the set's eerie minimalism (though, all of those things are pretty epic). No, what's most amazing is that it was never meant to be a hit at all.
Seems "Single Ladies" — which is nominated for nine Moonmen at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, including Video of the Year — was basically an afterthought. Bobcat Goldthwait is many things - a veteran stand up comedian, an actor/writer/director/producer, a man unafraid of having an incredibly annoying stage voice. He took over Sundance last year with Sleeping Dogs Lie and just so happened to go two for two by delivering another fantastic film this year in the form of World's Greatest Dad. The movie is a either a comedic drama, a dramatic black comedy, or a Bob Fosse-style musical. Sometimes it's hard to tell which even though there are zero musical numbers. Fortunately, there are a ton of Bruce Hornsby jokes. Clever, endearing, challenging, heartening and triumphant - the film is a well-rounded look at what happens to one man whose dreams are farther and farther out of reach as the reality of his flailing job, his questionable romance, and what has to be the worst son in the history of progeny comes closer and closer into focus.
