Screen Queens: Sally Bowles

8 November 2009 8:27 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

MattCanada here with another week of homo classics. Since I started writing this weekly column about a month ago, I have focused on films which have not been Oscar contenders and not featured the actresses which Nathaniel, me, and all the readers of this website respect (read: worship in a cult-like fashion). So on to Cabaret!

Liza Minnelli's Oscar winning role as Sally Bowles may well be the gayest Oscar win of all time. Now I am not a big Liza fan, actually I actively dislike her in anything else, but in Cabaret she gives one of the most amazing performances in the history of cinema in the greatest movie musical of all time. Not to be hyperbolic or anything, but Liza's Sally and Cabaret are earth shatteringly good. Liza is hardly the only reason to love Cabaret. You can get almost as much pleasure out of Joel Grey and Marisa Berenson's performances, »

Eric Roberts: The Hollywood Interview

(Eric Roberts in "Crash," above.)

Rediscovering Roberts

Eric Roberts never really left, but 2009 audiences are learning (or relearning) the charms of the actor Mickey Rourke has called the best he ever worked with.

By Terry Keefe

(This article is currently appearing in this month's Venice Magazine.)

Eric Roberts is the [expletive deleted] Man,” proclaimed Mickey Rourke at this past year’s Independent Spirit Awards, while accepting his trophy for Best Male Lead, at the very beginning of a speech which then saw him singling out Roberts, his one-time co-star in 1984’s The Pope of Greenwich Village, as someone who was worthy of a comeback like Rourke had with The Wrestler. From the audience, Roberts himself watched his friend at the podium with what looked to be a combination of embarrassment at being mentioned and some pleasure at the same, finally throwing it back at Rourke by shouting good-naturedly, “Accept your award!” For »

Kristen Bell will dance in "Burlesque"

12 October 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

I officially declare this the year of Kristen Bell. She's everywhere lately, proving there's a lot more to her than the soothing voice of Gossip Girl, so it's only natural that she'd come out of the shadows of voiceover work — and in a big way.

The Veronica Mars star will be seen in a handful of new movies this season, starting with Couples Retreat, which opened this weekend, and co-stars Vince Vaughn and Jason Bateman (who, like Bell, was the star of another insanely amazing television show that for some godforsaken reason only lasted three seasons: Arrested Development).

But enough of dwelling on the past: It was just announced that Bell has been cast as Christina Aguilera's rival in a new musical feature, Burlesque, which also stars Cher, Stanley Tucci and Twilight's Cam Gigandet. But back to the main point: Kristen Bell. Doing burlesque.

Kristen Bell to Dance 'Burlesque' with Christina Aguilera

9 October 2009 4:04 PM, PDT | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

Remember that burlesque movie starring Christina Aguilera? Well, it's happening – and not only has Cher been added to the cast (yes, remember Cher?) as a nightclub owner, but The Hollywood Reporter now tells us that sweet, innocent Kristen Bell is going to play Aguilera's rival. Oh yeah – it's on!   For those who don't remember, Burlesque will travel down a familiar road as it's about a small town girl with a big city voice (Aguilera) who heads to Los Angeles where she finds love and success as a dancer in a neo-burlesque club (picture Bob Fosse's Cabaret). It's at this club, however, that Aguilera runs into Bell, who plays Nikki – the club's loose-cannon lead dancer. Of course Nikki isn't going to be too fond of a hot shot nobody stealing her spotlight, and so...

Kristen Bell vs. Christina Aguilera In ‘Burlesque’

9 October 2009 10:30 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

If you were anxiously awaiting a movie featuring Kristen Bell and Christina Aguilera fighting it out to see who becomes queen of the neo-burlesque stage (undoubtedly while wearing skimpy outfits), then this is your lucky day. Why? Well, it seems Bell has signed to take a role in Screen Gems upcoming musical drama Burlesque, which features that exact scenario.

Just in case you’ve never hard of this movie or needed a minute because you were picturing Kristen Bell in lingerie, Burlesque tells the story of “an ambitious small-town girl (Aguilera) with a big-town voice who finds love and success in a Los Angeles neo-burlesque club, reminiscent of the nightclub in Bob Fosse’s Cabaret.”

Bell will play Nikki, the “loose-cannon lead dancer and main attraction” at the club who, to say the least, is not so pleased when Aguilera’s character suddenly gets the spotlight. Of course, an intense »

Kristen Bell Becomes a Burlesque Dancer

9 October 2009 7:48 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Cristina Aguilera's big-screen Burlesque debut is already a pretty interesting mix. We've got the slight girl with the powerful pipes, plus Cher returning to Hollywood as a nightclub owner and Stanley Tucci as the man who turns Aguilera's small-town girl "from bumpkin to bombshell." (Please tell me she's living in a lonely world.) But now, in a pretty wild twist, The Hollywood Reporter posts that Kristen Bell is joining the action as her rival.

As the story goes, Aguilera's girl has "a big-town voice" and "finds love and success in a Los Angeles neo-burlesque club, reminiscent of the nightclub in Bob Fosse's Cabaret." Bell enters the mix as Nikki, "the loose-cannon lead dancer and main attraction at the club who spirals out of control" when Aguilera steals the spotlight.

Now, there are a lot of women I could imagine battling Aguilera. At the top of the list would probably be Scarlett Johansson. »

Casting Notes: Kristen Bell, Parker Posey and Mia Wasikowska Have New Gigs; Eliza Dushku Teases Videogame Adaptation

Just because Peter is back on the scene with Page 2 doesn't mean I have to skip the occasional casting roundup. First up, Kristen Bell will appear opposite Christina Aguilera in the musical drama Burlesque, not to be confused with that Showgirls sequel we talked about the other day. The film takes place in "a Los Angeles neo-burlesque club, reminiscent of the nightclub in Bob Fosse's Cabaret." Bell will be Nikki, "the loose-cannon lead dancer and main attraction at the club who spirals out of control when Aguilera's character suddenly gets the spotlight." A few tickets were probably sold based on that paragraph alone. [THR] After the break, news on projects for Parker Posey, Mia Wasikowska and Eliza Dushku. Kristen Bell to Star Opposite Christina Aguilera in Burlesque

9 October 2009 12:10 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

The combination of Kristen Bell, Christina Aguilera and burlesque can only mean one thing: Justin Timberlake is a dirty rotten liar, because sexy didn't come back until just now. THR reports that Bell (Couples Retreat) will join singer Christina Aguilera in the Steve Antin directed feature  Burlesque, which follows the rivalry of the undoubtedly scantily clad characters of Bell and Aguilera as they fight for the spotlight in "a Los Angeles neo-burlesque club, reminiscent of the nightclub in Bob Fosse's Cabaret."  Bell joins a cast that already includes Cher, Stanley Tucci and the promise of a whole lot of musical numbers. While Aguilera plays an "ambitious small-town girl with a big-town voice" Bell will take on the role of her rival Nikki, "the loose-cannon lead dancer and main attraction at the club who spirals out of control when Aguilera's character suddenly gets the spotlight." Sounds a little too similar »

Kristen Bell Plans a Burlesque Beat-Down of Christina Aguilera

8 October 2009 11:05 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Look out Christina Aguilera, soon to be actor who we didn't know had any acting chops, you're about to run into all of 5'1" 90 lb. (soaking wet) Kristen Bell. That's the premise of the new Steve Antin-directed drama Burlesque. Aguilera will star as an ambitious small-town girl with a big-town voice who finds love and success in a Los Angeles neo-burlesque club. Allegedly it will all have a feel similar to the nightclub in Bob Fosse's Cabaret. It will just include a pop star and that Veronica Mars girl. Bell will play Nikki, the loose-cannon lead dancer and main attraction at the club who spirals out of control when Aguilera's character suddenly gets the spotlight. I can't knock Kristen Bell, as she a mostly underrated talent. Her all-too short stint on Heroes was disappointing and she was very flat in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. It will be nice to see her move into something as challenging »

Stanley Tucci Feeling Burlesque

24 September 2009 12:55 AM, PDT | www.canmag.com | See recent CanMag news »

The latest rage are musicals, as all the best actors seem to be leaning towards them. Okay, it's a bit of an exaggeration, but slightly true. The latest victim -- don't take that in a bad way -- is Stanley Tucci, who has agreed to join the cast of Burlesque. To be honest, this project was in need of some testosterone.

Stanley Tucci Sings Burlesque

Screen Gems has hired Tucci to star alongside Cher and Christina Aguilera in Burlesque, the musical to be directed by Steve Antin.

Based off a script by Antin, though revised by Susannah Grant, Burlesque will have Aguilera play an ambitious small-town girl with a big voice who finds success in a neo-burlesque club reminiscent of the nightclub in Bob Fosse's "Cabaret." Tucci will play the manager of the Sunset Boulevard club and the best friend and confidante of Tess (Cher), a former dancer who »

What can be said about a legion of glittering unitards, sparkling tights and an army of "Single Ladies" other than awesome?

Beyoncé, who hit the Vma red carpet in a red ruffled dress, stripped down to a sparkly leotard and one silver glove. Beginning her performance with a sexy, drum-led remix of her newest single, "Sweet Dreams," as she worked her way down the stage, B bounced into her Vma nominated "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" initially with just two background dancers.

Beyonce's Vma-Nominated 'Single Ladies' Video Began As An Afterthought

The most amazing thing about Beyonc&#233's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" video isn't the dancing, the leotards, the mesmerizing movement of the Queen B's hips or the set's eerie minimalism (though, all of those things are pretty epic). No, what's most amazing is that it was never meant to be a hit at all.

Seems "Single Ladies" — which is nominated for nine Moonmen at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, including Video of the Year — was basically an afterthought. Director Jake Nava got around to it only after wrapping production on "If I Were a Boy," a higher-gloss, higher-profile video that was originally intended to be the main attraction of B's first two I Am ... Sasha Fierce singles.

Exclusive: Bobcat Goldthwait Talks ‘World’s Greatest Dad’

19 August 2009 6:59 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Bobcat Goldthwait is many things - a veteran stand up comedian, an actor/writer/director/producer, a man unafraid of having an incredibly annoying stage voice. He took over Sundance last year with Sleeping Dogs Lie and just so happened to go two for two by delivering another fantastic film this year in the form of World's Greatest Dad. The movie is a either a comedic drama, a dramatic black comedy, or a Bob Fosse-style musical. Sometimes it's hard to tell which even though there are zero musical numbers. Fortunately, there are a ton of Bruce Hornsby jokes. Clever, endearing, challenging, heartening and triumphant - the film is a well-rounded look at what happens to one man whose dreams are farther and farther out of reach as the reality of his flailing job, his questionable romance, and what has to be the worst son in the history of progeny comes closer and closer into focus.
