There has been perhaps no better match between a comedian and a project this decade than with Jack Black and School of Rock. Sure, Will Ferrell's been memorable in a number of things, like Old School and Elf. Vince Vaughn was funny in Wedding Crashers, but his wisecracking motormouth shtick has since grown tiresome. Bill Murray found the role of a lifetime in Lost in Translation, but the film was more of a melancholic meditation on life and loneliness than a full-blown comedy. For our money, Black's infectious and warm performance in Richard Linklater's film is simply pure, unadulterated brilliance. Anyone who can make the cello joke at the two minute mark work deserves our praise. (Let's just pray the proposed sequel doesn't taint it.)

When talking Will Ferrell, some might say that Old School is their favorite, or Elf, or Anchorman. But for me, it's Stranger than Fiction -- one of the films in director Marc Forster's varied career. He's brought us the drama of Monster's Ball, the fantasy of Finding Neverland, and the flight of The Kite Runner, and now Bond wonder with Quantum of Solace. Not one to swim around in a rut, The Hollywood Reporter posts that he's now whipping up a remake with Universal of the 2000 Korean crime drama Die Bad.
Not quite the land of terrorist takeovers and one-man crime-fighting machines, the original Die Bad covers four interlocking stories focusing on the cause and affect of male aggression and gangster life, where the characters and stories intersect into each other's vignettes. Brad Ingelsby, who is currently writing The Low Dweller, is writing the script.

It was another celebrity-filled Lakers game last night at the Staples Center as the undefeated team beat the La Clippers. David Beckham continued be a loyal fan, so maybe Posh isn't the only one who is loving their La life. Becks and Marc Anthony chatted with Kobe Bryant, and the stadium upped its comedic factor with Jonah Hill, Jack Black, and Will Ferrell keeping the laughs going all game long. Kate Hudson was back in town and had a great time drinking beers with her brother Oliver. All in all it was a successful night for the Lakers and their A-list fans. Apparently someone at Twentieth Century Fox is reading SpoutBlog lists for inspiration: a month after we suggested a contemporarily set adaptation of Gulliver's Travels starring Will Ferrell, the studio has announced a contemporarily set adaptation of Gulliver's Travels starring Jack Black (really, though, the project has apparently been in the works for some time). Perhaps we'll soon hear about a Candide movie at Paramount? Speaking of literary adaptations, a new CG-animated version of L. Frank Baum's <a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117 ...

According to the trades Universal is in negotiations to remake the Korean film Die Bad, developing the drama as a potential directing vehicle for director Marc Forster, whose latest flick, Quantum of Solace, hits theaters next week. Brad Ingelsby is on board to write the script. Ingelsby is also scripting the Paramount Vantage drama Buried, with Todd Field attached to direct, Sleeper for Warner Bros and The Low Dweller, which Leonardo DiCaprio is slated to star in. Written and directed by Seung-wan Ryoo, the 2000 original consisted of four short films that told the story of the rise and fall of a gangster. The components are being combined for the English-language remake that will be set in New York. The original won the audience award at the Pusan Film Festival. The film will be produced by Forster and his Apparatus partner Brad Simpson, Vertigo's Roy Lee and Doug Davison and Rick Schwartz of Overnight Productions.

One of the more-intriguing releases on the 2009 movie calendar is The Hangover, a new comedy from Old School director Todd Phillips. After hitting the jackpot in 2003 with the help of newly minted "frat pack" members Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, and Luke Wilson, Phillips faltered with his next two releases, Starsky & Hutch and School for Scoundrels, before reportedly being booted from the Borat director's chair due to alleged "creative differences" with star Sacha Baron Cohen.
It seems appropriate, then, that Phillips chose to return to familiar territory for The Hangover, a raucous, irreverent comedy about three guys who throw an epic bachelor party for their buddy -- only to awaken the next day to find that the groom-to-be has vanished.
ReelzChannel.com recently stopped by The Hangover's set at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, where we spoke with Phillips and stars Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, and Justin Bartha.

As far as movie nakedness goes, do you prefer the comedic kind (think of Mike Meyers, John Cleese or Graham Chapman) or do your tastes run more towards the sexy stuff like Daryl Hannah, Brigitte Bardot and (sigh) Beverly D'Angelo in National Lampoon's Vacation! I only ask because a goofy little bracket game just went up at the Entertainment Weekly website, and since any blog post with the word "nude" in it gets massive traffic, I just figured the game was worth mentioning on a boring Monday afternoon.
Basically you click right here and then vote your way through a series of tourney-style brackets, picking the most memorable nude scene each time out. Of course Borat is in there, and so is Will Ferrell, so I'm thinking that Ew (and voxpop.tv) should have split the titillating tournament into two divisions: The silly stuff and the sexy stuff. Ah, but

Striking while the iron is hot, "Saturday Night Live" executive producer Lorne Michaels tapped Will Ferrell to return to the sketch show as current U.S. President George W. Bush. Ferrell did the parody on the show's "Weekend Update" on Thursday, October 23 night, appearing alongside Tina Fey's now-famous impersonation of Sarah Palin.
Among the things that Ferrell's Bush discussed in the skit was the election of between John McCain and Barack Obama. He commented that the presidential candidates are "heavily patriotized" and "display much characterization" and then he offered McCain and Palin, a "prime time, heavily publicized network endorsement from George W. Bush".
Fey's Palin then appeared, shook 'Bush''s hand and said that she has seen him on TV. When Ferrell said to her that the role of a vice president is "the most important in the land" and that president "can't do nothing without checking with the vice

Anne Hathaway has signed on to star in Burr Steers’s romantic comedy “The Fiance” for Warner Bros.
Variety says the film follows a woman who calls off her wedding and dumps her seemingly perfect fiancé in order to figure out who she really is. Her parents, however, have different plans for her.
Dyanne Stempel and Jennifer Robinson wrote the original script, with Etan Cohen doing the rewrite. Cohen recently wrote “Tropic Thunder” and just completed the script for an upcoming Sherlock Holmes project with Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen.
Hathaway, one of Hollywood’s busiest actresses, is currently onscreen in “Rachel Getting Married.” She will next be seen in Gary Winick’s “Bride Wars,” followed by Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.”
Steers, whose credits include 2002’s dramedy “Igby Goes Down” (interesting flick by the way), just wrapped “17 Again” with Zac Efron in the lead.

Actresses Natalie Portman and Rashida Jones have come up with a novel way of solving the global economic crisis - buying puppies.
In a new video for comedian Will Ferrell's website Funnyordie.com, the two stars come together to poke fun at the international economic downturn, and make their own suggestion about how best to solve the problem.
In the sketch, the pair says: "The global financial crisis is affecting all of us. The panic on Wall Street has now reached mainstream. There doesn't seem to be a clear answer. And the worst may be yet to come."
Portman adds, "After careful consideration, Rashida and I have determined the best course of action - puppies!"
The actresses are then shown rolling around a bed kissing and cuddling a number of cute pooches, before challenging viewers by saying in all seriousness, "So how about it America? Puppies."

Last week was a big week for movie-related Broadway stories with Spider-Man and The Goonies, and this week continues the trend with news that Will Ferrell will make his Broadway debut in January in the new solo comedy “You’re Welcome America. A Final Night With George W Bush.” Variety reports that the stage production will be helmed by Adam McKay, the writer-director of Ferrell pics “Step Brothers,” “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” and “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.” No details on the plot just yet, but the production begins previews Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, ahead of a Feb. 1 opening at the Cort Theater. The limited engagement is set to go dark on March 15th. The writing credits have not yet been confirmed, although it seems likely Ferrell and McKay will collaborate on the script, since the duo co-wrote the screenplays for all three of their prior film outings.

While Oliver Stone's W. hits theaters today and presumes to entertain you with the life and times of George W. Steve Martin is kind of a comedic genius of yore, his talent, and humour sometimes lost on the Will Ferrell-hungry generation that populates today's urban landscape. Well perhaps his inclusion in the new Nancy Meyers film, which co-stars comedy's nom-du-jour Alec Baldwin, will make his career once again relevant to all you young folks. In the untitled film, Martin and Baldwin play rivals for the affection of a woman, who will be played by some dame named Meryl Streep. I'm a huge fan of...

While I'm sure we'll all agree that these past few years have given us some wonderful little comedic gems, it's often unfortunate to see most of the attention thrown at one particular sex, or, in some cases, one particular man: Judd Apatow. But this post won't be about Judd Apatow, or Seth Rogen ,or Jonah Hill, or Michael Cera, or Will Ferrell, or Adam McKay, or Vince Vaughn, or Owen Wilson, or Kevin Smith ... or any of the male names that currently populate (and dominate) some of your favorite comedies. Nope, because it's about damn time we give the ladies some respect.
I'm sick of the female roles in comedies today. She's either the bland girlfriend, or the bland friend, or the bland enemy -- she's full of cliches, and only serves two purposes: 1) to help move the story along, and 2) to make her male counterpart appear funnier. That said,

It is common for millionaire movie stars to enjoy success on the big screen, sit back and enjoy their laurels, and become complacement, waiting simply for that next big Hollywood paycheck to come along. One thing I've always admired about Will Ferrell is that he is not content with simply collecting a check every 6 months while making his fans wait empty-handed in between films. He has chosen to take a proactive approach, taking full advantage of the interweb by giving us classic shorts...

Jeremy Piven used his Emmy win on Sunday to advertise his next big acting role - on Broadway.
After picking up his third successive acting award for his role in TV hit Entourage, Piven took a camcorder into one of the star-studded Los Angeles after parties - where he told celebrity pals about his forthcoming role in David Mamet play Speed-The-Plow.
In a staged skit, which appears on Will Ferrell's website Funnyordie.com, Laura Dern, Mary Steenburgen, Jamie Foxx and Seth Meyers all warn Piven against taking to the stage.
When he tells Dern and Steenburgen he came from the theatre, they say, "Don't go back." Foxx tells him, "Don't do theatre. Theatre is so, so not hot." And Meyers goads him by joking, "Anyone can do a play. It's what they do at school."
Piven starts his run in Speed-The-Plow on 3 October.
