DVD Playhouse—November 2009

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

Gotta love those dark Germanic fairy tales. They are ripe with strange folklore, the supernatural, and some of the most grotesque creatures ever imagined. These stories are intrinsically woven into the fabric of horror culture. You would think there would be more amazing fairy tale film adaptations, but only a few immediately come to mind: The Company of Wolves, Little Otik, Snow White and the Seven Dwarf and Labyrinth. Perhaps they hold more magic on paper, but it's inevitable that filmmakers will continue to turn to these tales for inspiration.
Earlier this year it was reported that Tommy Wirkola, the Norwegian director behind the Nazi-zombie flick Dead Snow will make his first U.S. feature with Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. The film is being produced by Gary Sanchez Productions--the Paramount company run by Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Chris Henchy and Kevin Messick.

Chicago – When I first heard about Will Ferrell’s one-man Broadway show in which he would deliver a nearly-90-minute monologue as outgoing President George W. Bush, I was both excited at the potential and nervous as to how on Earth the talented comedian could keep it interesting for its full running time. Wouldn’t it play like an extended “Saturday Night Live” sketch? “You’re Welcome America: A Final Night With George W. Bush” not only justifies its running time but is smart, clever, and well-written enough that I wished it was twice as long.
DVD Rating: 4.0/5.0
In his first-ever HBO special, Ferrell brings his Tony-nominated portrayal of George W. Bush to audiences who couldn’t make it to New York City earlier this year. Timed to coincide with Bush handing over the reins of the country to Barack Obama, “You’re Welcome America” is a searing, satirical look »

As a fan of director Tommy Wirkola’s Nazi zombie opus “Dead Snow,” I’m super jazzed about the filmmaker’s upcoming Stateside project “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,” a film that’s being produced for Will Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez Productions. According to The Hollywood Reporter, writer Dante Harper is set to handle scripting duties, which should be a pleasant surprise for fans of Charles Burns’ “Black Hole.” Harper, along with director David Fincher, had a hand in developing the comic book series. In case you’ve been out of the loop for a while, “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” follows the duo into adulthood, where they have become witch-hunting mercenaries. Co-producer Adam McKay, at one point, stated that he wanted to develop three of these, though I suspect his lofty ambitions will be greatly determined by the first’s box office success. »

Was it really April when I first covered this? Damn time flies…
Paramount Pictures have signed up Dante Harper to pen the script for their big screen adaptation of the children’s classic, Hansel and Gretal. The film, which is being directed by “Dead Snow” co-writer/director Tommy Wirkola for Paramount and Gary Sanchez Productions, sees the brother/sister pair as professional Witch hunters – so expect action aplenty!
The story takes place 15 years after the pairs first encounter with a witch, a story told in the classic tale first written by the Brothers Grimm, and the pair now make a living as bounty hunters – took that gingerbread house incident a bit seriously didn’t they?
According to THR, Kevin Messick, Adam McKay, Will Ferrell and Chris Henchy are producing the film, which is being described as a horror/comedy and is being likened to Shaun of the Dead. First film »

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marti Noxon will script the remake of the 1985 vampire fave Fright Night for DreamWorks and producers Michael De Luca, Michael Gaeta and Alison Rosenzweig. She’s an appropriate choice, given her experience writing and producing for TV’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel.
The new film will maintain the mix of chills and humor from writer/director Tom Holland’s original, which stars Chris Sarandon as a suave but deadly bloodsucker who moves next door to a horror-loving teenager (William Ragsdale), who turns to a washed-up TV creature-feature host (Roddy McDowall) for help. The FX will be “modernized” (read: lots of CGI); a director and cast have yet to be signed. Noxon’s many other TV credits include Grey’S Anatomy, its spinoff Private Practice, Prison Break and, currently, the hit series Mad Men.

Nearly 10 years into a world dominated by Shrek, it's hard to come up with a way to riff on fairy tales with even a hint of originality. By by God if a Norwegian hasn't figured out how to do it. Tommy Wirkola, who cowrote and directed the Nazi zombie movie Dead Snow, has hired writer Dante Harper to tackle Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. And yes, it is as awesome as you're thinking. According to THR, the movie takes place 15 years after the events inside the witch's house, and the brother-sister duo are motivated by their experience to become witch bounty hunters. Even better, the Gary Sanchez team that includes Adam McKay and Will Ferrell will be producing the horror comedy, which is obviously being compared to Shaun of the Dead. I firmly believe that there is only room for one Shaun of the Dead-esque movie in the world »

Ryan Reynolds is setting himself up to be for superhero movies what Will Ferrell is for sports movies. Earlier this year, he turned in a pretty decent performance as Deadpool which will eventually turn into its own series. Next he.s signed up to play Green Lantern. For the sake of this argument, I.m also going to count Van Wilder as a superhero character because that dude is just plain awesome. That's three, and it could have been four. It turns out that writer Bill Birch also thought Reynolds would make a great Captain Marvel. Segal is currently working on a script for Shazam, the film adventures of Captain Marvel. Talking to CineFOOLS, Birch stated: .I always thought Ryan Reynolds would have been interesting but now that he.s Green Lantern that.s not an option.. Captain Marvel, as some may remember, is the alter ego of Billy Batson, »

It's been about six months since we first heard about Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, the brainchild of Dead Snow co-writer/director Tommy Wirkola under the auspices of Gary Sanchez Productions and Paramount. Now finally the project has a writer to take Wirkola's idea and smooth it out a bit: Dante Harper.
Harper's last genre film was Black Hole, which David Fincher has been developing (also at Paramount). But as for H&G: Witch Hunters, "[Wirkola] pitched and plotted out the story line, which picks up the fairy-tale siblings 15 years after their traumatic gingerbread house incident, which provoked them to become witch bounty hunters.
Sanchez execs Kevin Messick, Adam McKay, Will Ferrell, and Chris Henchy are producing the horror-action comedy, which is pitched as having a gory-but-funny 'Shaun of the Dead' vibe."

The HBO show takes in almost all the categories possible for one show to achieve, only missing the spot in Favorite Drama Actor.
