The Crillon Ball: 24 Princess Gowns and One Lady

3 December 2009 1:40 PM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

This past Saturday, 24 lucky teenage girls had a chance to shine at the 19th annual Bal Crillon des Debutantes (that's the Crillon Ball to you), held at Paris's Hotel de Crillon. Huate houses from Chanel to Lanvin outfit the girls in gorgeous gowns—and why not After all, the event benefits children's charities in Asia. This year's debutantes included Jason Wu-clad Autumn Whitaker, daughter of actor Forest Whitaker and model-actress Keisha. Also at the ball was Sea of Shoes blogger Jane Aldridge, who was swathed in Chanel. (You'll have your turn, Tavi!) And while all 24 young women were princesses for the night, one debutante's royal bearing is for keeps: Lady Kitty Spencer. »

A Single Shot to the Arm for David Jacobson with Fassbender Onboard

30 November 2009 1:32 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Screen Daily reports that Jacobson will be working with the not too shabby foursome of Michael Fassbender, Forest Whitaker, William H. Macy and Thomas Haden Church this January on A Single Shot. - I'll always wonder how much of an impact a negative box office result can have on a burgeoning career of an indie filmmaker. Profit margins is obviously not a tool to evaluate talent, and while we have ample proof of what a breakout hit can do, I'm guessing that bad B.O can surely put a hamper on future projects. David Jacobson will surely leave a larger imprint than he did with Down in the Valley, with the project he'll be shooting in the new year. Screen Daily reports that Jacobson will be working with the not too shabby foursome of Michael Fassbender, Forest Whitaker, William H. Macy and Thomas Haden Church this January on A Single Shot. »

Film review: Where the Wild Things Are

27 November 2009 2:08 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A frequently beguiling yet oddly frustrating film version of Maurice Sendak's 1963 children's book

Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are is a 1963 children's book, nine sentences long and illustrated from a moonlit palette, that spins the tale of Max, who sails to a land of monsters and returns to find supper still hot. In a few deft strokes, the book appears to suggest there is a world of adventure, and a safe place to come home to, and that monsters we meet on our travels are not so different from you and me. In Max's case, they may even be aspects of his unconscious: horned and furry demons to be soothed and brought into line.

Sendak's wild things have been harnessed anew, courtesy of this frequently beguiling yet oddly frustrating film version by Spike Jonze and the novelist Dave Eggers. The problem is not that Jonze and Eggers »

Mr. Social: Ashton Kutcher Plans to Be the Next New-Media Mogul

Dude, Wheres The Cash? Here's what scares Kutcher: "When I have a conversation with someone and they say, 'I'm not worried about monetization yet.' " | Photographs by Jill Greenberg

How Ashton Kutcher is pioneering a new kind of media business, bridging Hollywood, technology, and Madison Avenue. Really.

On The Job Everyone at Katalyst has a role in the Katalyst HQ mockumentary Web series, including cofounder Jason Goldberg, left, and new-media director Sarah Ross, above right. This year's sponsor is Nestlé's Hot Pockets, below right.

I've walked into the middle of a swine flu outbreak.

"Here, put this on!" Ashton Kutcher bounds from around the corner in his loft-style Hollywood office, wearing a paper face mask and holding another one. "You can choose whether to wear it or not, but we all are. We can't afford to get sick!" Within seconds, I am surrounded by a fast-moving herd of masked Flip-cam marauders, »

Jekyll and Hyde Coming from Action Jackson Films

18 November 2009 4:54 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Those of you who’ve listened to the Driller Killer commentary track already know that director Abel Ferrara is completely out of his mind. But in case you aren’t so sure, I call your attention to this story, wherein we told you about a Ferrara-helmed reimagining of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde starring Forest Whitaker and 50 Cent as the deranged duo.

Today we got word through Variety that the adaptation will come from Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s own newly formed production company, Action Jackson Films. No relation to the Carl Weathers classic where he took on Coach himself, Craig T. Nelson.

Warner Brothers will be rolling the dice on this utterly baffling outing by releasing it theatrically. We’ll bring you more as it hits the newsroom.

Warner Bros. Acquires 50 Cent Starrer 'Jekyll and Hyde'

18 November 2009 4:06 PM, PST | bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news »

Warner Bros. Pictures has acquired domestic rights to Abel Ferrara's Jekyll And Hyde, which stars both Forest Whitaker and Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson. The film will be a re-imagining of Robert Louis Stevenson's "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," which will be contemporized and titled "Jekyll and Hyde." Whitaker plays Dr Jekyll, a rich doctor of great generosity who lives on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Mr Hyde (50 Cent) is a sadistic murderer with a reputation that strikes fear in to the hearts of people throughout New York. Peter Utterson, Dr Jekyll's lawyer and friend, investigates the mystery of who Mr Hyde is and why he is the sole beneficiary of Jekyll's will. The devastating answer is that Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde are the same person and the urgent problem is how to kill the beast without destroying the man. »

DVD Review: Spectacular ‘The Shield: The Complete Series Collection’

13 November 2009 11:32 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – All seven season of the Emmy-winning, groundbreaking “The Shield,” easily one of the best programs of the ’00s, have been collected into one absolutely gorgeous set for “The Shield: The Complete Series Collection”. This time of year usually produces several complete series sets to essentially re-sell already available programs to holiday shoppers. This is one of the best.

DVD Rating: 5.0/5.0

The 88 episodes of “The Shield” have been collection on 28 Dvds, beautifully housed in a 34-page bound anthology book filled with photos, quotes, and a special letter from Shawn Ryan. Purely from a packaging perspective, “The Shield” is one of the most beautiful sets that a TV fan could include on their shelf. Sometimes complete series sets are literally nothing more than the previous releases crammed into one box. That’s not the case here as the entire show has been lovingly bound like a book you want to read again. »

Dolph Lundgren May Get Small Role in Conan Remake

10 November 2009 4:28 AM, PST | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

MTV News caught up with Dolph Lundgren who said that he is talking to producers of Conan and might be making an appearance in the reboot.

“I’ve talked to the producers about doing something for ‘Conan,’” Lundgren said, as he cautioned that casting is still going on and whether there is a role for him at all likely wouldn’t be decided until 2010…It’s too early,” he said, explaining that he didn’t expect to know more until “probably next year.”

Directed by Marcus Nispel, the Lionsgate film is based on Robert E. Howard’s mythical conqueror Conan the Barbarian. The new version is expected to be more faithful to Howard’s original creation than were the Arnold Schwarzenegger films.

I have been weary about this film from the start only because I love Schwarzenegger’s original so much. Secondly the plot of the film really didn’t get me going. »

Robert Pattinson Would Love To Host 'SNL' -- If He Could Write Episode

'That would be fun, but, I think that's kind of against the protocol,' 'Twilight' star says.

Drew Barrymore was 7 years old when she first hosted "Saturday Night Live." Macaulay Culkin was 11; Jodie Foster was 14, and Lindsay Lohan was 17. Heck, this past weekend, Taylor Swift reached an industry milestone when she hosted and appeared as a musical guest at the age of 19.

And the question Twilighters everywhere are asking — especially after last week's hilarious "Firelight" Digital Short — is why hasn't Robert Pattinson hosted "SNL" yet?

"I don't know what the actual details of it," the 23-year-old British heartthrob told MTV News, acknowledging the fans' increasingly vocal lobbying (including Web sites and petitions) for him to follow in the footsteps of everyone from Steve Martin to Justin Timberlake. "But I'm terrified of doing stuff like that."

Christmas came early for Disney with A Christmas Carol. The motion capture Jim Carey film managed to snag around $31 million over the weekend.

Michael Jackson’s This is It banked about $13.4 million over the weekend after dropping less than 42 % from last weekend.

George Clooney’s The Men Who Stare At Goats and Milla Jovovich’s The Fourth Kind were almost neck and neck over the weekend with a weekend take of just under $14 million for each film.

Paranormal Activity just keep knocking at the door marked profit with another $8.5 million.

Cameron Diaz’s The Box opened with a disappointing $7.8 million. This poor opening means that the Richard Kelly film will not be in the financial Darko for a while. »

First Look: Adrien Brody & Forest Whitaker in The Experiment

5 November 2009 11:19 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Haven't heard of The Experiment? Don't worry, there are always plenty of great indies you've never heard of! Our friends at Bloody-Disgusting got their hands on a few new photos from The Experiment at Afm. The film, which is a remake of Oliver Hirschbiegel's Das Experiment, is about a group of ordinary people who are chosen to participate in the roles of guards and prisoners in a psychological study that examines how the effects of assigned roles, power, and control affect the participants. Obviously it spins out of control. Adrien Brody, Forest Whitaker, Elijah Wood, Cam Gigandet, Clifton Collins Jr. and Maggie Grace all star in this. I love these types of films. I'm already reminded of The Killing Room, which is another great "experiment" film, and I need to watch the original Das Experiment before this as well. There's also another German film called The Wave that played »

Casting Notes: Michael Fassbender Fires A Single Shot; William H. Macy and More in Dirty Girl; Goth Icon Peter Murphy Cameos in Twilight 3

5 November 2009 9:50 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

It's casting notes time again! First up, Michael Fassbender, the British film critic lieutenant from Inglourious Basterds, has been cast in the thriller A Single Shot, working under director David Jacobson. He's appearing alongside a great cast: William H. Macy, Thomas Haden Church and a newly slim Forest Whitaker. (Seriously, check out this pic of Whitaker in The Experiment. Give the guy a sandwich!) Fassbender will be a poacher on the run from killers -- we don't yet know the killers, but it's not difficult to speculate that Church and Whitaker might be the guys.[Variety] After the break, more William H. Macy news, with Juno Temple, and an on-the-nose vampiric turn from the guy who reminded us that Bela Lugosi is dead. Macy will also be in Dirty Girl, with a cast that now includes Lisa Kudrow, Sally Hawkins and Juno Temple. First-timer Abe Sylvia is directing the film about »

Michael Fassbender Takes A Single Shot

5 November 2009 3:29 AM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

Michael Fassbender has signed on to star in the upcoming David Jacobson pic, A Single Shot. Fassbender joins Forest Whitaker, William H. Macy and Thomas Haden Church and will play a poacher on the lam from a pair of killers.

Fassbender recently starred as Lt. Archie Hicox in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and in the critically acclaimed Fish Tank. His magnanimous portrayal of Bobby Sands in Steve McQueen's Hunger proved that actors, unlike Orson Welles - bless him for trying in The Lady From Shanghai - don't have to be Irish to do an Irish accent.

So it would seem Fassbender is set to dive into mainstream stardom. The brilliant actor is on George Miller's shortlist to star in Mad Max IV: Fury Road. Although not entirely bankable as an action star at this point, he seems to be testing the water with the lead in Neil Marshall »

Afm: First Still from The Experiment Remake

5 November 2009 1:15 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

The first official still from the Paul Scheuring directed remake of Das Experiment (review), called simply The Experiment, debuted at Afm today, and the only words that come to mind for us are -- Please. Someone. Anyone. Get Adrien Brody a sandwich. Thanks.

The Experiment stars Adrien Brody, Maggie Grace, Forest Whitaker, Clifton Collins, Jr., and Cam Gigandet.

For those not in the know the story shows what happens when a research study on a group of ordinary men recruited to take on the roles of guards and prisoners goes terribly out of control. Brody will portray the de facto leader of the prisoners while Whitaker will play a guard who's corrupted by the power he's given. If you're unfamiliar with the actual Stanford Prison Experiment, click here to read all about it.
