Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: November 8, 2009

8 November 2009 10:08 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

This week:

The box office sings A Christmas Carol; Faceman visits Dark Fields; Michael Fassbender fires A Single Shot; High Fidelity guys re-team with Lay The Favorite and Helen Mirren sees Red.

Box Office

Christmas came early for Disney with A Christmas Carol. The motion capture Jim Carey film managed to snag around $31 million over the weekend.

Michael Jackson’s This is It banked about $13.4 million over the weekend after dropping less than 42 % from last weekend.

George Clooney’s The Men Who Stare At Goats and Milla Jovovich’s The Fourth Kind were almost neck and neck over the weekend with a weekend take of just under $14 million for each film.

Paranormal Activity just keep knocking at the door marked profit with another $8.5 million.

Cameron Diaz’s The Box opened with a disappointing $7.8 million. This poor opening means that the Richard Kelly film will not be in the financial Darko for a while. »

First Look: Adrien Brody & Forest Whitaker in The Experiment

5 November 2009 11:19 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Haven't heard of The Experiment? Don't worry, there are always plenty of great indies you've never heard of! Our friends at Bloody-Disgusting got their hands on a few new photos from The Experiment at Afm. The film, which is a remake of Oliver Hirschbiegel's Das Experiment, is about a group of ordinary people who are chosen to participate in the roles of guards and prisoners in a psychological study that examines how the effects of assigned roles, power, and control affect the participants. Obviously it spins out of control. Adrien Brody, Forest Whitaker, Elijah Wood, Cam Gigandet, Clifton Collins Jr. and Maggie Grace all star in this. I love these types of films. I'm already reminded of The Killing Room, which is another great "experiment" film, and I need to watch the original Das Experiment before this as well. There's also another German film called The Wave that played »

Casting Notes: Michael Fassbender Fires A Single Shot; William H. Macy and More in Dirty Girl; Goth Icon Peter Murphy Cameos in Twilight 3

5 November 2009 9:50 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

It's casting notes time again! First up, Michael Fassbender, the British film critic lieutenant from Inglourious Basterds, has been cast in the thriller A Single Shot, working under director David Jacobson. He's appearing alongside a great cast: William H. Macy, Thomas Haden Church and a newly slim Forest Whitaker. (Seriously, check out this pic of Whitaker in The Experiment. Give the guy a sandwich!) Fassbender will be a poacher on the run from killers -- we don't yet know the killers, but it's not difficult to speculate that Church and Whitaker might be the guys.[Variety] After the break, more William H. Macy news, with Juno Temple, and an on-the-nose vampiric turn from the guy who reminded us that Bela Lugosi is dead. Macy will also be in Dirty Girl, with a cast that now includes Lisa Kudrow, Sally Hawkins and Juno Temple. First-timer Abe Sylvia is directing the film about »

First it was a real life science project called The Stanford Prison Experiment, then it was a 2001 German film called Das Experiment, now it’s an American remake called The Experiment with Forest Whitaker, Adrien Brody, Elijah Wood, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Grace and Clifton Collins Jr. The film follows a group of volunteers divided up into prisoners and guards who are thrown into a simulation jail to see how they handle their newfound roles. In real life, the experiment was halted due... »

A Single Shot to the Arm for David Jacobson with Fassbender Onboard

5 November 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- I'll always wonder how much of an impact a negative box office result can have on a burgeoning career of an indie filmmaker. Profit margins is obviously not a tool to evaluate talent, and while we have ample proof of what a breakout hit can do, I'm guessing that bad B.O can surely put a hamper on future projects. David Jacobson will surely leave a larger imprint than he did with Down in the Valley, with the project he'll be shooting in the new year. Screen Daily reports that Jacobson will be working with the not too shabby foursome of Michael Fassbender, Forest Whitaker, William H. Macy and Thomas Haden Church this January on A Single Shot. Being packaged and sold at the Afm by HanWay Films, the thriller (which will shoot in the minus weather on tough, Canadian turf) is based on a screenplay written by Matthew »

Michael Fassbender Takes A Single Shot

5 November 2009 3:29 AM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

Michael Fassbender has signed on to star in the upcoming David Jacobson pic, A Single Shot. Fassbender joins Forest Whitaker, William H. Macy and Thomas Haden Church and will play a poacher on the lam from a pair of killers.

Fassbender recently starred as Lt. Archie Hicox in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and in the critically acclaimed Fish Tank. His magnanimous portrayal of Bobby Sands in Steve McQueen's Hunger proved that actors, unlike Orson Welles - bless him for trying in The Lady From Shanghai - don't have to be Irish to do an Irish accent.

So it would seem Fassbender is set to dive into mainstream stardom. The brilliant actor is on George Miller's shortlist to star in Mad Max IV: Fury Road. Although not entirely bankable as an action star at this point, he seems to be testing the water with the lead in Neil Marshall »

Afm: First Still from The Experiment Remake

5 November 2009 1:15 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

The first official still from the Paul Scheuring directed remake of Das Experiment (review), called simply The Experiment, debuted at Afm today, and the only words that come to mind for us are -- Please. Someone. Anyone. Get Adrien Brody a sandwich. Thanks.

The Experiment stars Adrien Brody, Maggie Grace, Forest Whitaker, Clifton Collins, Jr., and Cam Gigandet.

For those not in the know the story shows what happens when a research study on a group of ordinary men recruited to take on the roles of guards and prisoners goes terribly out of control. Brody will portray the de facto leader of the prisoners while Whitaker will play a guard who's corrupted by the power he's given. If you're unfamiliar with the actual Stanford Prison Experiment, click here to read all about it.

A Single Shot For Michael Fassbender

5 November 2009 12:10 AM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Michael Fassbender – who really should be a much, much bigger star than he is – has signed on to play the lead in the thriller, A Single Shot.Fassbender – so good this year in the hugely contrasting Inglourious Basterds and Fish Tank - will play a poacher on the run from a pair of killers in the film, which will be directed by David Jacobson.Forest Whitaker, William H. Macy and Thomas Haden Church round out the cast, although we’re not yet entirely sure who’s playing the killers.Fassbender is close to making the breakthrough to genuine stardom – word is that he was one of the shortlisted stars on George Miller’s Max Max list for Fury Road – but so far he seems to be targeting leads in lower-budget films, like this and Neil Marshall’s eagerly-awaited Roman flick, Centurion, perhaps as a way of proving that he can carry action films. »

Chuck Russell Enjoys Himself Some Arabian Nights 3D

4 November 2009 8:38 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Chuck Russell has been attached to a lot of movies since “The Scorpion King” in 2002, but as far as I know he hasn’t finished or actually come through with any of them. (What’s up with “Northern Lights”, Chuckie?) The latest project to strike his fancy is a $70 million dollar retelling of the classic “Arabian Nights” tale, in which Russell co-wrote the script and is attached to direct in the 3D format. Russell’s version of “Arabian Nights” will follow a young commander who, after his king is killed in a palace coup, joins forces with fellow good guys Sinbad, Aladdin, and his genie to rescue the comely Scheherazade and her kingdom from dark powers. Much CG carpet-riding and sword fights ensue. The boys at Inferno Entertainment will foot the bill. They have “The Experiment” with Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker coming up, and the action-thriller “The Killer Elite” with Jason Statham on tap. »

The creator of the landmark cable series talks about the new Complete Series DVD set, Terriers and more.

Back in 2002, a series aired that changed the face of television and became my favorite TV series of all time - Hands Down - The Shield. For seven seasons I was absolutely riveted by the exploits of the Strike Team in the fictional Los Angeles district of Farmington, and that of their leader Vic Mackey, played to utmost perfection by Michael Chiklis. Sadly, the TV series came to an end last fall, with a series finale that is, in my opinion, the single best series finale in TV history ( to read my farewell piece to this amazing series) and now viewers can relive the TV magic with The Shield: The Complete Series, which hits the shelves in a massive 28-disc set on November 3. I was fortunate enough to have an exclusive »

The Name Game: Down With Nouns

Thinking outside the box when it comes to naming babies goes part and parcel with being a celebrity, and in their search to come up with the perfect moniker some have clearly pushed that envelope more than others. According to nameberry.com co-founder Linda Rosenkrantz, word names are an increasingly popular way to do just that.

“When looking for a really unusual baby name, many celebrities have started to search the dictionary for a noun or adjective that will define their child, choosing words that have rarely, if ever been used before as people-names,” she explains.
