Rowling's Potter Prequel Helps Set Book Record

8 August 2008 12:06 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Author J.K. Rowling's new Harry Potter tale has helped a new book to become the fastest-selling collection of short stories of all time in the U.K.

The writer penned an untitled prequel to her popular Potter series for What's Your Story?, a collection of 13 tales by authors including Tom Stoppard, Doris Lessing, Sebastian Faulks and Irvine Welsh.

Rowling's 800-word story is set three years before the boy wizard's birth and focuses on Harry's father, James Potter, during his teenage years with his friend Sirius Black.

She signs off with the words: "From the prequel I am not working on - but that was fun!"

Rowling released the final book in the franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, last year, although she is also set to release a small series of fairy tales from the last Potter novel, entitled The Tales of Beedle the Bard, in December.

What's Your Story? was released in Britain on Thursday, when it sold more than 10,000 copies - with some stores completely sold out within just a few hours.

The profits from the book will be donated to charities Dyslexia Action and English Pen, an organisation that aims to promote literature between different cultures.

Shakespeare on Film: Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead

11 July 2008 3:01 AM, PDT | From MovieMaker.com | See recent Movie Maker news

Tom Stoppard originally sold the screen rights to Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead, the stage comedy which made his name, soon after its 1967 premieres in the West End and on Broadway. He wrote a screenplay for MGM, then saw the project languish for twenty years until the rights were bought back and he rewrote the script and filmed it in what was then still Yugoslavia. With a cast featuring Tim Roth and Gary Oldman, Stoppard portrayed the events of Hamlet entirely from the point of view of the Prince’s doomed friends as they travel to Elsinore, kick their heels ‘off stage,’ and sail to England.

Actor Ethan Hawke is set to fulfill his lifelong dream of appearing in a London stage play, after making his debut in a double-bill production in the West End.

The Dead Poets Society star is set to appear in a new adaptation of Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard by Tom Stoppard, and Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale. Both will be directed by American Beauty filmmaker Sam Mendes.

In 2002, Hawke was quoted as saying: "I really have a big dream of being in the West End. I love the work that happens here, and the fact that people go to the theatre, and how good the theatre is here."
