Weekend of November 14 – 16, 2008
“Quantum of Solace” crushed its competition at the North American box office this weekend with a whopping $70.4 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Marc Forster’s 22nd official James Bond adventure scored the best opening for a Bond movie ever, beating the opening weekend gross of predecessor “Casino Royale” by $29.6 million. That currently makes “Solace” the worldwide box office leader.
Last week’s winner “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” slipped to No. 2, earning an impressive $36.1 million to reach a domestic total of $118 million after only two weeks in release. The sequel to the 2005 hit features the voices of Ben Stiller, Jada Pinkett Smith, Chris Rock and David Schwimmer.
At No. 3, David Wain’s comedy “Role Models” picked up another $11.7 million, lifting its total haul to $38.1 million after a solid two-week run. Starring Seann William Scott and Paul Rudd, this R-rated comedy follows

Opened in 4,056 theaters across North America starting on Friday, November 7, "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" steals the box office crown from "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" over the weekend. The sequel of 2005 hit DreamWorks animation comedy, "Madagascar", has shot to the top of three-day weekend box office, earning $63.1 million.
Outgrossing the first "Madagascar" movie by 35 percent, the tale of stranded zoo animals on their way home has become the biggest weekend bow since "The Dark Knight" collected $158.4 million back in July. To top that, it also scores the biggest debut for a CGI cartoon movie since "The Simpsons Movie" and is the second-best premiere ever for a non-summer animated movie right behind "The Incredibles".
In addition, "Escape 2 Africa" has outdone "Bee Movie", the CGI family comedy which kicked off the 2007 holiday season, by 67 percent. On the amazing run by the toon voiced by Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett Smith,

Miami, Fl (Cns) -- Moviegoers couldn't escape a trip to theaters for "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa", the sequel to the 2005 hit Dreamworks animated comedy.

The second highest debut came from the R-Rated comedy "Role Models", earning .5 million. The film stars Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott as two slackers who must perform community service as mentors to troubled children.

Marty the zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer) and Alex the lion (Ben Stiller) in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
Photo: DreamWorks Animation For the last week I have been working on a major overhaul to the backend systems of RopeofSilicon and it has caused me to feel a little out of touch with the world of movies recently. The election on Tuesday was another wrench in the works making it feel like a mid-week holiday only to have Friday sneak up on me out of nowhere. So here I sit on a late Friday night/early Saturday morning and finally feel like I am catching up only to realize the weekend box-office is a blur to me. I wrote the reviews and expected Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa to land big, but the numbers mean nothing to me. However, I think if I focus hard enough I can guide

Director: Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath
Writer: Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath and Ethan Cohen
Starring: Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett Smith
Studio/Run Time: DreamWorks Animation, 89 mins.
Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa borrows so much of its plot from The Lion King that it’s fortunate it steers away from the drama of Disney’s film and heads straight for the funnies. After a flashback, where baby Alex the lion is taken away from his family in Africa and rescued by the Central Park Zoo, the film picks up where Madagascar left of, with the four friends—Alex (Ben Stiller), zebra Marty (Chris Rock), giraffe Melman (David Schwimmer) and hippo Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith)—trying to leave the island. They take off in the carcass of a crashed plane piloted by the quartet of penguins, who again steal the show every time they’re on the screen.

Facts of interest: This is not the last "Madagascar." A third one is on the way already.
The plot: This time, Alex, Gloria, Melman and Marty try to fly back home to New York. Unfortunately, they end up crash-landing somewhere in Africa.
Our thoughts: “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” feels more like a déjà vu than an all-new animated adventure starring familiar characters. The sequel to the 2005 DreamWorks Animation hit “Madagascar” lacks all the ingredients of an inventive sequel, offering instead a boring 89-minute show with a shallow story and plenty of rehashed gags.

I didn't think much of Madagascar, which had an unfocused story, no internal logic, and only a few laughs, scattered mostly among the minor characters. It relied too much on pop-culture references, too, a common problem these days in animation. So I'm glad to report that the sequel, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, is an improvement. The story has a clear protagonist (instead of the lion and zebra battling for screen time), it's a bit more straightforward, and the movie references are all but gone. It's still primarily the supporting cast that's funny, not the leads -- but hey, if Dreamworks were capable of doing everything right it would have to change its name to Pixar.
The sequel, again directed by Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath, finds our heroes having repaired a dilapidated airplane and now preparing to fly themselves back to New York. But instead, they crash-land not far from

Photo: DreamWorks Animation I will always remain baffled at how 2005's Madagascar was loved by so many and ended up raking in over $193 million at the box-office. In my eyes the film was hardly worth the celluloid it was shown on. Taking that into consideration I walked into the screening of Madagascar Escape 2 Africa with trepidation and concern I was in for another 90 minutes of boredom. To my surprise my experience couldn't have been much better. While this sequel to a lame duck animated flick that wildly over exceeded its quality isn't the best animated film I have seen this year, it is far from the worst and holds a lot of laughs. The primary problem with the first Madagascar was that the story essentially went nowhere. The four

It isn’t just the oh-so-clever use of a number in the title that hints that this is a sequel – Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa feels obligatory and tired, like a lot of sequels do when there’s not much story left to tell. Perhaps it fits this case better to say when the wrong story appears to be told.
Escape 2 Africa isn’t bad; it’s just not that memorable. And the things that were funny and different about the original film, which was released in 2005, are pushed into the background in favor of struggling storylines involving escaped zoo animals Alex the lion (Ben Stiller), Marty the zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the hypochondriacal giraffe (David Schwimmer), and Gloria the hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith).

Melman, David Schwimmer's character in the Madagascar films, is a giraffe. David Schwimmer is a human being. Still, he continues to marvel at how much the giraffe looks like him, particularly in a scene from the sequel Madagascar: Escape to Africa.
David Schwimmer Goes Giraffe for Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
"I've seen a rough cut of it many months ago, but it was early in the movie when the plane is going down, and the crash, and I blurt out, 'I love you Gloria,'" Schwimmer recalled. "Then the other two guys turn around and just look at me, and I just kind of froze with, 'I love the beach, or good book, or, the beach.' When I saw that, I was like, how did they get my face? Just because, that was my timing, I think. I remember that distinctly."

Eliza Dushku reunites with "Wrong Turn" director Rob Schmidt for this supernatural riff on the infamous Alphabet murders that took place in Rochester, NY in the early '70s. Dushku stars as the lead investigator in a series of brutal child killings who's struck down by a severe mental breakdown. On the same day that the new James Bond saga Quantum of Solace (Sony) set a new opening-day record in the United Kingdom, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (DreamWorks/Paramount) broke all-time opening-day records for an American-made film in both Russia and Ukraine. This is just the beginning for Alex the Lion (Ben Stiller), Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer) and Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith). The movie opens in the United States this Friday, and it is a surefire homefront blockbuster.

Former Friends star David Schwimmer has quashed rumours of a movie version of the hit TV series - blaming the press for fuelling speculation about a reunion.
The show came to an end in 2004 after 10 seasons, but the cast have been dogged by rumours of a possible big screen adaptation ever since.
TV shows including The Simpsons and Sex and The City have translated into hit movies - and it was rumoured that Friends would be the next programme to make it to the big screen.
But Schwimmer insists there has never been any plan to reunite the cast one last time.
He tells Parade magazine, "I'd like to say in regard to the rumours that - I think are only perpetuated by the press - there's never been any talk of a Friends film, at least as far as I know.
"The series is definitely not a part of my daily consciousness until either a fan comes up or I'm asked about it in some interview. It is like having a relative visit because it's been more than four years since really we all were in the same room even."
