John and Madhavan's meeting with Jet Li

5 December 2009 4:01 PM, PST | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Charity initiative of former United States President Jimmy Carter called 'One Habitat', which aims to building houses in Thailand for the less privileged, brought together action superstar Jet Li and our very own John Abraham, Pooja Bedi and R. Madhavan.

Abraham and Madhavan spent a couple of days in the country building houses for the charity. Says Madhavan, "Jet Li is an extremely intelligent and well read person, and I cannot begin to describe how fantastic the experience has been for us. Li feels very responsible when it comes to charity, and he goes out of his way to do so." »

Killer Imports: Kung Fu Cyborg

4 December 2009 5:54 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Killer Imports [1] is a regular feature on Film Junk where we explore foreign-language films from around the world that haven’t yet had their chance to shine. Kung Fu Cyborg: Metallic Attraction opens with a promising title sequence. On a plain white background befitting a technologically sterile environment, a headless robotic body performs various human movements like training on a Wing Chun dummy and playing an erhu, a Chinese musical instrument. Unfortunately, the rest of the movie was rather disappointing although it does have a certain amount of charm. I had not heard or seen anything about this movie when I noticed its clunky title on the DVD cover. Since the images on the cover were rather indistinct, I imagined either a martial arts Terminator wreaking havoc or an Ultraman-like hero dispatching evil-doers. What I got instead were Transformers in a meandering mess of a plot meant to please everyone. »

Sylvester Stallone's upcoming action flick "The Expendables" promises movie goers that it's going to be packed with balls-to-wall mayhem and why wouldn't it be? The film has a star-studded cast that includes Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mickey Rourke, Brittany Murphy, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, Eric Roberts, Steve Austin, Terry Crews and much more! All that we know about the film so far is that a team of mercenaries head to South America on a mission to overthrow a dictator. To overthrow a dictator? Ninja Assassins Movie Review

1 December 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

Ninja Assassins Gives birth to a new action star I grew up watching “Chop-Socky Flicks” which is all Ninja Assassins is with a bit more spit and polish. The CGI computer graphics amplify the gore and add matrix-esque quality to the actors martial arts skills. This movie and essentially all the Kung-Fu/Karate genre movies owe their existence to four Bruce Lee Films. Bruce is often imitated but never duplicated. The common flaw is the heroes just do not have the charisma nor the acting chops of Bruce Lee.

With a barrage of fast paced multiple fight scenes, action is certainly the foundation but they must be anchored by star power to succeed. Few come to mind: Steven Seagal, Jean Claude Van Damme, Jackie Chan, Jet Li and some of Chuck Norris’ films accomplish this but Bruce is like james Dean or Elvis - the total package. ‘Ninja Assassin’ Movie Gets Mediocre Reviews From Top Movie Critics

27 November 2009 10:29 AM, PST | OnTheFlix | See recent OnTheFlix news »

'Ninja Assassin' movie gets mediocre reviews from top movie critics. Warner Bros. Pictures new action flick, "Ninja Assassin" didn't amaze the critics with its debut this weekend. It stars : Rain, Naomie Harris, Ben Miles, Sho Kosugi, and Rick Yune. The critics gave it pretty mixed reviews, but overall, they were mediocre. Wesley Morris from the Boston Globe gave it a C-. He stated, "this long, thanklessly repetitive slice-kick-and-shoot-’em-up has nothing to offer but the aggravating awareness that Jet Li and Jason Statham have done it better." Geoff Berkshire over at the Chicago Tribune gave it a D. He said, "The rotten clichés pile up faster than the bodies in this Z-movie disaster." »

'Red Cliff' Just the Latest Film Re-Edited for American Consumption

26 November 2009 9:10 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Last Friday marked the arrival of Red Cliff (read our review here) the new war epic by Chinese action-meister John Woo. But this wasn’t the same version that graced Asian theaters prior to its international release: In its home country, Red Cliff was released as two films, the first in mid-2008; the second in early 2009.

Rather than unleash a nearly six-hour magnum opus on audiences worldwide, Woo pared both films down into a single two-and-a-half hour cut. In interviews, he said the deleted scenes mostly placed the film’s events in historical context, which might not have appealed to Westerners unfamiliar with Chinese history. Woo’s movie depicts the famous Battle of Red Cliffs, which was fought around early 200 A.D. between warlords from the northern and southern regions of China.

It’s too early to tell how successful Red Cliff will be with North American viewers (In mainland China, »

Trailer: The King of Fighters

26 November 2009 10:23 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Old school video game fans are not going to be happy with this! A trailer for the live-action adaptation of the classic Snk 2D fighting game The King of Fighters has surfaced online and it looks as though it’s a serious contender for the worst video game-to-film adaptation ever made.

Starring Sean Faris (Never Back Down), Maggie Q (Live Free or Die Hard), Will Yun Lee (Elektra), and martial arts expert Ray Park (Darth Maul from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace), The King of Fighters is directed by Gordon Chan, who although was behind the terrible Jackie Chan film The Medallion, also made the much loved Jet Li classic Fist of Legend.

The film’s premise is wildly different from the game it’s based upon. According to Movieset:

The King of Fighters movie will introduce a new science fiction spin into the setting established in the games’ universe »

Rain and James McTeigue Talk Ninja Assassin

25 November 2009 9:02 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Our thanks to Diva Velez for the following interviews with Ninja Assassin star and director Rain and James McTeigue.

Rain

The Lady Miz Diva:  Ninja Assassin is a really violent, bloody film.  Were you concerned that so much of your fan base, which consists of younger kids and people who might not usually go to this type of movie, wouldn't be able to see your big Hollywood film?

Rain:  Yeah, I know, but it's gonna be huge.  I believe they will like my movie.  I am a little bit worried, but it's something different from what I've done, so it's interesting that way.  And I believe more male fans will be interested in this movie.

Lmd:  Raizo is a full of a lot of rage.  What did you find inside yourself to create that constant anger he feels?

R:  Well, before the shooting the Wachowskis and James McTeigue always »

2nd Joel Silver Interview Ninja Assassin. Plus Info on Dark Castle Projects, Remakes, Sherlock Holmes, More

24 November 2009 8:49 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

At last weekend’s press junket for Ninja Assassin, I had the opportunity to speak with producer Joel Silver twice.  The first time was an exclusive TV interview, and the second time was during a roundtable interview the following day.  While I normally would be happy to use just one of the interviews, since Joel Silver is producing so many high profile projects (Lobo, Sgt. Rock, The Apparition), I knew getting to speak with him twice would be a good thing.

Also, what a lot of people don’t realize is how much info a producer can tell you.  While it’s always great to talk with an actor, unless you’re a Brad Pitt, most actors don’t have that much juice to get a project made.  So that’s why getting to speak with Joel Silver is so great, because not only can he talk about all his projects that are getting made, »

A Bruce A Day: Fist Of Fury

24 November 2009 5:00 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

[We continue our A Bruce A Day run through the career of Bruce Lee with his sophomore starring role in Fist Of Fury.]

Just a year after making his leading man debut with The Big Boss Bruce Lee would reunite with director Lo Wei to tackle one of China's most popular folk heroes, Chen Zhen, in Fist of Fury.  The favored student of legendary martial arts master Huo Yuan-Jia, the story of Chen's return to Shanghai on the death of his master and subsequent clash with the Japanese occupying forces is a favored rallying point for Chinese patriotic pride and one that has been told many times with this film and later Jet Li star vehicle Fist of Legend being the most high profile examples.

The most drama and character oriented of all Lee's films, this is the one occasion in his big screen career where Lee was asked to step in to an already existing - and very popular character - rather than creating a new character from scratch.  As a result, »

More Hong Kong Classics Hit Blu Ray!

23 November 2009 7:32 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Oh, the BluRay revolution is going to get expensive with lots of films I love but never picked up on DVD suddenly becoming available all gussied up and purty.

On the Jackie Chan front, Police Story originally hit BluRay a couple months back but that original film is now about to be followed by Police Story 2 on November 27th and the double bill of Chan at his absolute peak is too tough to resist.

And Jackie's not alone in having his classics reissued.  Nope, they're doing Jet Li's Once Upon A Time In China series, too.  Again, part one was out a while ago and part two drops November 27th.

As a reminder, these releases are all English friendly and with Hong Kong being part of BluRay Region A, these are playable in any North American BluRay player.

Rain Interview, Ninja Assassin

The role of Raizo called for an actor with a special intensity, who could convey a lot of emotion in a very subtle way. »

‘The Treasure Hunter’ Featuring Kato from ‘Green Hornet’

19 November 2009 8:37 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

There are few people that are aware of the growing movie market overseas. Thailand is emerging as a serious threat in the marital arts action genre with the help of Tony Jaa (Ong Bak); Russia is proving they can make a slick and entertaining film thanks to studios like Disney (Black Lightning); and, of course, Japan has always been the source for many Hollywood studios’ “inspired” horror remakes (The Ring, The Grudge). One foreign market that tends to be brushed off as only doing kung-fu or martial art films is China.

Today we have a trailer for a new Asian film which has the odd IMDb genre label of romance/sci-fi called Ci Ling (Treasure Hunter). Why are we at Screen Rant sharing this trailer with you? Because Treasure Hunter stars an actor most English-speaking audiences may not be familiar with yet, but will be next year: Jay Chou. Chou »

Killer Imports [1] is a regular feature on Film Junk where we explore foreign-language films from around the world that haven’t yet had their chance to shine. Whenever I appear on the Film Junk podcast and review a film, I invariably have a negative opinion. And when I write film reviews for the Film Junk web site, I invariably have a positive opinion, even for films that many Film Junk readers would consider bad. The discrepancy has to do with the fact that I don’t get to choose which films to review on the podcast. I find it easier to give reasons on why I like something rather than why I don’t like something. So for me, writing a positive review is easier to write and seems more worthwhile since someone may be influenced by a positive review to watch a film that I feel deserves attention. No »

Madhavan may be totally immersed in the promotion of his upcoming release 3 Idiots. This would be for an organization called 'Habitat for Humanity'. Says a source from the organization, "Maddy (as he is lovingly called) has shown great passion in this cause. As a part of this program, we construct houses from scratch for the needy people and hence provide them safe, decent and affordable shelter." An organization that began operations more than 20 years back, it has already built close to 30000 houses across the globe, including India. Black List Screenplay Once Upon a Time in Hell Bought by Phoenix Pictures

4 November 2009 1:15 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Ever since Sergio Leone made his pair of 'Once Upon a Time..." movies (a masterful pair of films at that) other writers and directors have cribbed the title for their own work. Jet Li gained popularity with Once Upon a Time in China. Robert Rodriguez obviously nodded to Leone with Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and Quentin Tarantino did the same with the title card and early tagline for Inglourious Basterds. ("Once Upon a Time in Occupied France...") Now Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy will be able to add their script, Once Upon a Time in Hell, to the list. After being listed on the 2009 Black List of popular unproduced screenplays, their work has been bought by Phoenix Pictures. The big question is: how has a movie not already been made with this title? The story is based on the classic revenge story by Alexandre Dumas, The Count of »

Rediscovering Roberts

Eric Roberts never really left, but 2009 audiences are learning (or relearning) the charms of the actor Mickey Rourke has called the best he ever worked with.

By Terry Keefe

(This article is currently appearing in this month's Venice Magazine.)

Eric Roberts is the [expletive deleted] Man,” proclaimed Mickey Rourke at this past year’s Independent Spirit Awards, while accepting his trophy for Best Male Lead, at the very beginning of a speech which then saw him singling out Roberts, his one-time co-star in 1984’s The Pope of Greenwich Village, as someone who was worthy of a comeback like Rourke had with The Wrestler. From the audience, Roberts himself watched his friend at the podium with what looked to be a combination of embarrassment at being mentioned and some pleasure at the same, finally throwing it back at Rourke by shouting good-naturedly, “Accept your award!” For »
