One thing that I'm constantly shocked and astounded by are some of the morbid and morally questionable fairy tales, fables, nursery rhymes and legends that children hear at such a young age. Stories like Hansel and Gretel, Three Blind Mice or even the Dr. Seuss story of The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins are surprisingly dark and grim. But now as an adult, I love when someone has the creativity to take these twisted stories and make them even more vicious. Such is the case with THR's report on an adaptation of the comic book The Piper, a twisted, contemporary take on the classic legend of The Pied Piper of Hamelin. The comic centers on a bullied high school band student who unintentionally channels the spirit of the mysterious Pied Piper and triggers terrifying consequences of his actions beyond his control. Sounds like Carrie meets Bully, and I'm just fine with »

One of the bright spots in Jaco Van Dormael's mess of a movie, playing the teenage version of the film's protagonist role played by Jared Leto, newbie Toby Regbo might easily be Mr.Nobody's most alive characters. Playing Nemo at age 16, the actor is mostly paired with Juno Temple - their unique love story is the film's heart pumping portions and plays a lot better than the artery clogging other brushes of romance. Regbo was also at Tiff for Glorious 39 and will next be seen in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Uno. - #6. Claire Danes was terrified pairing up with hunky actor Zac Efron for upcoming film Me And Orson Welles - because she was constantly forced to fend off mobs of lusty teen fans.
The actress, who counts Leonardo DiCaprio and Jared Leto among her previous leading men, insists she's never seen anything like Efron's magnetising effect on legions of screaming girls.
And after playing Efron's lover in the period drama, Danes admits she was still awestruck by the throngs of devotees yearning to catch a glimpse of the 22 year old.
She explains, "He's like, really famous. It's different. It's wild. I've never seen a person have that kind of effect on many, many teenagers. It was crazy, there were girls camped outside of our hotel room for days, literally chanting, 'We want Zac!' It was kind of terrifying." »

You can’t buy the kind of publicity Playgirl magazine has received for getting Levi Johnston to pose naked.
Well, actually, I guess you can. What did the magazine pay the ex-future-second-son-in-law anyway? Given all the ink and pixels that have been spilled over this, it was pretty good deal for Playgirl, especially since the word now is that he didn’t even do the whole lumberjack.
Not surprisingly, the magazine is said to be eagerly looking for other famous folks willing to disrobe.
We have some suggestions.
But let’s face it: Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Evans are never going to pose naked for Playgirl. The same goes for virtually every other person on our annual Hot 100 list. These folks are at the very peak of their careers, and they need neither the money nor the, uh, exposure.
That said, there are plenty of other familiar faces (and bodies »

It wasn't until I started writing about movies online that I found a shared love with Fight Club, but it actually seems like every single movie blogger running a movie news driven website has a special relationship with this film. As a matter of fact, I thought I loved this movie, but now realize I am a mere fan compared to the legions of followers Tyler Durden and David Fincher have amassed. Luckily this film hasn't inspired a legion of Project Mayhem followers as much as it has inspired folks to journey on a path of loving film and Fox has put together an impressive Blu-ray to make sure they can continue down that path and do so in superior high definition.
The Fight Club Blu-ray, as evidenced in the screenshots you can see at DVD Beaver, is vastly superior to the excellent 2-disc DVD I'm sure adorns every fan's shelf. »

Now this is a film I really can't wait to see again. Mr. Nobody is a French sci-fi drama starring Jared Leto, Rhys Ifans, Sarah Polley, and Diane Kruger. This new French poster comes from our friends at IMPAwards. I'm featuring it not necessarily because I like the design, but rather because it's a film I'm happy to put in the spotlight. I finally got to see it at the Toronto Film Festival a couple months ago and quite enjoyed it. It's got some flaws and problems, but overall it's a fascinating film about love and how one decision can change so much of your life forever. It's a very interesting concept to see on film. Anyway, take a look at it below. We also featured an early trailer for Mr. Nobody back in May that I suggest everyone also watch right here! Nemo Nobody (Jared Leto) leads an ordinary »

Blu-ray Review
Directed by: David Fincher
Cast: Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, Meat Loaf, Helena Bonham Carter, Jared Leto
Running Time: 2 hrs 20 mins
Rating: R
Due Out: November 17, 2009
Plot: An insomniac thirty something (Norton) with no purposeful existence meets an anarchist (Pitt). Together they start a “fight club,” which evolves into an underground society that offers men more happiness than the possessions that have ruled their lives.
Who’S It For? By appearance, Fight Club is a guy’s movie, a bonanza of machoness that has dudes beating each other in order to achieve catharsis. However, the mind of Fight Club extends far beyond the action movie genre, and is presented with an aesthetic brilliance that is worth a viewing itself.
Movie:
In honor of the tenth anniversary release of the amazing Fight Club, I am adding a few things to the organization’s list of rules, as things »

In keeping with the grand tradition of pretty much everything they do, 30 Seconds to Mars' upcoming This Is War album will feature — no lie — 2,000 different covers, each showing an image of a fan.
And, unbeknownst to them, Cobra Starship's Gabe Saporta too.
Confused? Well, let us get you up to speed. Back in June, as they were putting the finishing touches on War, 30Stm decided to involve their fans in the creation of the album artwork, asking them to submit pictures of themselves. The band would then select the 2,000 best images, which would be used as covers for the album itself and shipped randomly to stores around the world.
Seeing this as a relatively huge opportunity, »

30 Seconds to Mars' "King and Queens" music video has just made its way out for viewing pleasure. "We're doing all-night shoots. That was my big, dumb idea, to shoot at night," frontman Jared Leto told MTV about the video.
"But I think this city is a beautiful place at night, and we have these empty streets, and it's kind of a haunting, forgotten landscape," the vocalist continued. "It's been an incredible adventure, but it's also been really difficult, because there are so many people, and we're shutting down streets of Los Angeles."
"Kings and Queens" is the first single taken from 30 Seconds to Mars' upcoming third studio project "This Is War" which is due for December 8 U.S. release. Sharing what they have been going through in getting the album done, Jared said, "I don't know what to say. We spent two years of our lives working on that record, »

When 30 Seconds to Mars sat down to talk with MTV News on Wednesday evening about their upcoming album, This Is War, they were less than 12 hours away from the premiere of their much-anticipated "Kings and Queens" video. But there was a problem: They hadn't finished editing it yet.
"I'm not quite done with it, which is sort of worrying," frontman Jared Leto laughed. "I may look slightly tired, because I've been in the editing room late, late night finishing some of the post [production]. But yeah, right now, we're still not done."
Somehow, Leto — who directed the "Queens" video under the alias of Bartholomew Cubbins — managed to finish the final cut, and at around 3:30 Thursday morning (November 12), the clip made its world premiere on 30 Stm's MySpace page. Clocking »

'It was a time to redefine, rediscover, reinvent, reinvest in each other,' Jared Leto says of This Is War.

By their own admission, 30 Seconds to Mars went to hell and back to make their new album, This Is War, so you can't blame them for being a little hesitant to talk about the process. Sometimes, words aren't enough.
"I don't know what to say. We spent two years of our lives working on that record, and it was us against the world. We didn't have outside influence or help, we didn't have a label, we had us, betting the farm, and pushing ourselves," frontman Jared Leto sighed. "There were times that it was overwhelming. Everything that was going on was brutal, but there were beautiful moments as well. There was so many outside influences that were »

Band's new LP is massive and shiny, but also cold and empty, in Bigger Than the Sound.

Here is the best way I can describe 30 Seconds To Mars' This Is War, an album born out of rather intense struggles and big ideas, one loaded with icy synths and screaming falcons, epic chorales and windswept sonic expanses (and the occasional Tibetan Monk): Listening to it is like being inside a gigantic silver weather balloon, one ascending into the upper reaches of the stratosphere. It is massive and shiny and beautiful, but also cold and empty.
That's not meant to be a slight — actually the opposite. War is a shimmering epic of an album, to be certain, but as is often the case when big rock bands strive to go even bigger with their sound (the most obvious example I can think »

Continuing Simon Augustine's countdown of the Most Disturbing Movies (Read Part 1 for the first 13). [<< #7]
6. Requiem For A Dream (2002) 9 (gross out)/8 (artistic merit)
Darren Aronofsky, the Diy auteur who burst onto the scene with the black and white religious-techno fable Pi, and more recently made the wrenching The Wrestler, may have reached a creative peak with this adaptation of a novel by one of the stars of the disturbing branch of the literary world: Hubert Selby, Jr., who also wrote the book Last Exit to Brooklyn. In perhaps the most jarring and skillfully unnerving chronicles of drug addiction ever made, we witness the destruction by heroin and prescription pills of a mother, her son, his girlfriend and best friend (Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, and Marlon Wayans, all top-notch). »

Band has created an epic video, and the roll-out is epic as well.

Thirty Seconds To Mars have already gone to great lengths to make sure that their "Kings and Queens" video is a thoroughly epic production. They've filmed in and around some of Los Angeles' most iconic landmarks, recruited scores of extras and all manner of surrealist street performers to make cameos. So naturally, they want to roll the thing out in an equally epic manner.
Last week, they unveiled a 30-second teaser trailer for the clip, one that features a fire-breathing clown and an army of gas mask-wearing bicycle messengers patrolling the streets of L.A. And now, they're unveiling a second teaser video: right here, right now.
On Monday (November 9), Jared Leto sent MTV News a 30-second clip — called, appropriately enough, "The Horse" — that shows a majestic white »

What follows is my original top ten list of 2000... or rather the revised version I published in 2002. Let's discuss each year of this decade as it winds down! Who's with me?!? It's always interesting to see which films remained at the forefront of our memory and which fade... both for a variety of reasons, quality being only one factor. New comments are in red.
Please note: This list was based on NYC release dates in the year 2000. Some movies are listed as different years at the IMDb based on when they were released in their home country or in La or whatnot.
Runners Up (in descending order): Une Liaisons Pornographique, Nurse Betty, You Can Count On Me, Before Night Falls, Pola X, Chicken Run, American Psycho, Wonder Boys and Billy Elliott Um... What The Hell are some of these movies doing outside the top ten list? You Can Count on Me »

EA is continuing its long and difficult campaign of convincing people that "Dragon Age: Origins" is not quite as nerdy as it appears. Today's featured attempt? Bringing 30 Seconds To Mars into the mix. The band contributed one of their new singles, "This Is War," for use in the game. The song is the title track from their upcoming album which drops on December 8th.
Jared Leto, the band's front-man, provided this canned, somewhat antiseptic statement:
"We always like to push the envelope in the entertainment and media space and debuting our title track in a game of this caliber is a great way to communicate our music to fans around the world. We've come a long way from having to rely solely on radio to approach and engage music fans, and 'Dragon Age: Origins' is the perfect game to do this with."
