In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.
Carrie is the revenge tale of a high school girl who was picked on one too many times. Carrie White just wanted to be herself and have wonderful fun with her date at the prom. Instead she was forced to use her telekinetic powers to hurt those who were bullying her.
The screenplay by Lawrence D. Cohen is an impressive adaptation of the first novel by Stephen King. The adaptation was by no means an easy feat for the screenwriter. Lawrence D. Cohen had to construct a visual narrative from a novel consisting of police reports, diary and letter entries. The reader relates to Carrie White through other character’s points of view but never the character herself.

Amy Irving laughs on the telephone when asked whether others have commented on the fact that it's disorienting to see her playing the mother -- and not the daughter -- in Max Mayer's Adam. "Yeah, well, life happens," Irving says. "Time goes by." So, instead of playing Beth Buchwald (a role filled by Rose Byrne), love interest to the title character in Adam, she plays Beth's mother, a woman with troubles of her own to deal with. Irving, 55, and finishing a summer run in the Hamptons in Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie, says she wouldn't have it any other way. "Right now, I'm doing Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie and it's so much better than playing an ing... »

Pool Party. The Sag Harbor event celebrating Audemars Piguet’s new timepiece. From PatrickMcMullan.com. While the July Fourth weekend may have been a washout, the Hamptons picked itself back up this weekend as the girls of Manhattan jumped on the Jitney to take advantage of some of the few clear days we’ve had this summer. While the likes of socialite Harley Viera Newton and designer Charlotte Ronson enjoyed the sun, heiress Amanda Hearst hosted a small party at the East Hampton Intermix store, where Harvey Keitel’s daughter Stella Keitel was spotted. The fun didn’t end at sunset. Per usual, the Hamptons faithful washed off the sand and changed out of their Malia Mills one-pieces to head out for the night. On Friday evening the Parrish Art Museum held their Midsummer Party in Southampton. Guests such as New York governor David Paterson, painter (and Hamptons mainstay) Ross Bleckner, »

We've been looking at each Meryl Streep Oscar nod and its competitive field. Previously: 78, 79, 81, 82, 83 and 85
Meryl Streep's first act was the Liberated Lady. The second was The Chameleon in which Meryl was always the lead, always had new hair, voice and body language and basically controlled Oscar's Universe. It was as if there was only 4 spots for Best Actress, one reserved for her in perpetuity. This second act ended with her intense immersion into notorious dingo-hating Lindy Chamberlain in A Cry in the Dark. [Editor's Note: Yes, I'll do a top ten performance list when "Streep at 60" wraps in mid July. I've heard your requests and I've been rewatching all the movies.]
Starting in 1989 Act III of Streep's career began but we'll get to that shortly. First, let's look at her competition in the last two years of her legendary Act II.

We know that Mel Gibson has had a successful career for the last thirty years and hit the jackpot with "The Passion of the Christ" after taking a gamble on the controversial film. But how much is the legendary actor worth? According to Entertainment Weekly, Gibson has been able to accumulate a personal wealth of $1 billion, and now his low-profile wife is legally entitled to half of that after she filed to end their 28 year marriage. Celebrity divorce lawyer Raoul Felder doesn't expect for Mrs. Gibson to make this a drawn-out battle. "If she is like any other wife, she'll want her money now," he said. "She doesn't want to be a partner in a movie that may or may not be made 10 years from now. I think she'd want to be paid up front." Felder added that the divorce should not have much effect on Gibson's upcoming projects, unless »

Mel Gibson may soon be writing one of the biggest checks of his life - to his wife. With no indication that the estranged couple - who married 28 years ago - had a prenup, Robyn Gibson, 53, is legally entitled in their divorce to half of everything the actor-director-producer earned from their marriage in 1980 to the date of their separation: A fortune estimated at close to $1 billion. "This could easily be one of the biggest divorce settlements in Hollywood history," says Los Angeles family lawyer Lynn Soodik, who's not involved with the case. "Any attorney would advise her to take half. »

Note: Due to interviewing over 30 people and being provided with movie clips to almost every film at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, it’s taken some time to post everything on the site. The goal is to be finished with all the Sundance stuff this week. In case you’ve missed clips or video interviews, look for a big wrap-up article when it’s all online. One of my favorites from this year’s Sundance Film Festival was director Max Mayer’s “Adam”. The film is a love story between an elementary school teacher and aspiring children’s book author (Rose Bryne) and her neighbor Adam (Hugh Dancy), a man with Asperger's Syndrome. While the story is pretty straightforward, it’s the performances of both Hugh Dancy and Rose Byrne that make this movie. Both are dynamite in their scenes together and Hugh’s performance is especially great. And »

The dam finally burst and a flood of deals were unleashed today in Park City, Utah. (Please note: for the purposes of this article, we define "a flood of deals" as three (3)). But don't worry, America: Sundancers stopped to watch the inauguration live on TV.
Deals. (1) Fox Searchlight got things rolling with a worldwide deal for Max Meyer's romantic comedy Adam, starring Hugh Dancy, Rose Byrne, Peter Gallagher and Amy Irving; a 2009 release is planned. indieWIRE has the details. (2) Sony Pictures Classics picked up big buzz title An Education, Lone Scherfig's coming of age romantic tale, "after a heated bidding war," says Anne Thompson of Variety. Sony Classics reportedly paid $3 million for North American and Latin American rights and is eyeing an awards campaign launch in the fall. Thompson describes the film's star Carey Mulligan as a (the?) "Sundance 'It Girl.'" (3) Lionsgate acquired James Strouse's comedy/drama The Winning Season, »

In the run-up to this year’s Razzie nominations, to be announced Wednesday, January 21st for 2008’s “honorees” for the worst achievements in moviemaking, the longlist buzz is already getting press. If it’s any indication, 2008 must have been a stink-bomb banner year for movies as it’s rare for the press to report on the worst movies of the year just-passed, before the nominations are even announced.
Among the films emerging as leading contenders for 2008’s gold-plated raspberry statuette -- always bestowed on the eve of the “other” gold-plated statuette ceremony -- are: The Love Guru, Mike Myers’ laughless Bollywood debacle; Speed Racer, Disaster Movie, »
