Well there's not a heck of a lot to say about this as of yet, but the good folks over at JoBlo [1] managed to score the very first image from Wes Anderson's upcoming animated film, Fantastic Mr. Fox. I've been pretty interested in this project seeing as it is Anderson's first attempt at adapting someone else's work, but also because it will use stop motion animation. I guess that's the thing about this image though: it actually just looks like CG. To be fair, the picture is pretty small, so it's hard to make out much in the way of detail. Based on the children's book by Roald Dahl, the movie's voice cast includes George Clooney and Meryl Streep as Mr. and Mrs. Fox, plus a who's who of previous Wes Anderson collaborators that include Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman, Anjelica Huston and Roman Coppola (among

Wes Anderson’s next film is an animated take on Roald Dahl’s classic Fantastic Mr. Fox, and I gotta say, I’m very excited! I’m a huge fan of Anderson (Rushmore is in my top 10 favorite films of all time), and it looks like this Fox Searchlight movie has an incredible cast, led by George Clooney as the title character.
Adapted by Anderson and co-writer Noah Baumbach (whose Kicking and Screaming is a classic 1990’s indie film), the story follows Mr. Fox as he takes a meal every night from one of three farmers to feed his family. The farmers decide to team up to take down Mr. Fox.
It does seem a little bit odd that Anderson is doing an animated film as his follow-up to , but it does make sense. Harry Selick (classic animator behind Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline, and many others) provided the stop-motion sea

The Joblo folks have debuted the first image from Wes Anderson’s upcoming stop-motion animated film Fantastic Mr. Fox. The film is an adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl story of the same name, which centers on Angry farmers who, tired of sharing their chickens with a sly fox, look to get rid of their opponent and his family. It arrives in theater in November. Hopefully we’ll get that elusive teaser trailer soon. Anderson co-wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale) and the film features an all-star cast of voice talent including George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Michael Gambon, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Adrien Brody, Brian Cox, Anjelica Huston, Helen McCrory and Jason Schwartzman.

- #8. Fantastic Mr. Fox Director: Wes AndersonWriter(s): Anderson and Noah BaumbachProducers: Anderson, Allison Abbate and Scott RudinDistributor: 20th Century Fox...or perhaps Fox Searchlight? The Gist: The book tells the story about a fox, simply named Mr. Fox. At night, he steals animals from the farms of Bunce, Boggis, and Bean, three mean farmers, to feed his family with. The farmers are fed up with this, and try everything to kill him. They surround the hill he lives in with men armed with guns. After three days of starving, Mr.Fox and his children dig a tunnel to Boggis' chicken house number one, and steal a few chickens. They also raid Bunce's storehouse and Bean's underground cellar of apple cider. They invite everyone to a feast made from the loot and decide never to go above ground anymore. Fact: Anderson and Noah Baumbach also co-wrote The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou

But before the movie... the tour! It starts in just under three weeks in Denver. I'm not getting paid for this but I'm going to shill because live theater needs to be promoted. It's so much cooler than TV ... even if Corporate America can't profit off of it as much (finite audience = number of seats in house) and thus makes it seem uncool by ignoring it or dismissing it as irrelevant.
Oscar winner Estelle Parsons, 81, headlines the August tour
And given that The Movie -- all caps because if it's any good it'll be Big -- is going to be the subject of much discussion whenever it begins to film and especially once it's in theaters, you'll want to be in the know early on. Even if you're not normally a theater person. If you haven't been following theatrical buzz and awardage these past couple of years, it's

It's that time again, Red Carpet Lineup. Here's a (truly) random sampling of actors at events this past week. Let's check in with...
Ever classy Lindsay Lohan who celebrated her 23rd birthday (it's actually tomorrow) at a Vegas pool wearing that, flashing a peace sign, and sporting bright blue contacts. Unless she's been spending too much time on Nevada's nuclear testing grounds, those are contacts. I should never ever look at Lohan as she's become the avatar of Lost Potential. She found the empty calories of fame more enticing than the rich nutrients of good actressing.
Public Enemies opens today and it should be an interesting test of Johnny Depp's box office pull. The public is generally averse to period dramas but they do like gangster crime films so it's a bit of a toss up, really. It's already on IMDb's Top 250 but that's typical for masculine "cool" movies when they first open.

Veteran actress Anjelica Huston is set to be honored at the 21st Galway Film Fleadh. The Oscar Award-winning star will be presented with the inaugural Galway Hooker award, named after the famous local fishing boat.
The festival spokesperson, Felim MacDermott said, "It is very fitting that Anjelica is our guest of hhonor in our 21st year, as in our very first Fleadh, in 1989, she featured with her father John in a documentary about the local Galway Blazeers hunt."
"Anjelica will also introduce some of her films, such as James Joyce's 'The Dead,' which was directed by her father, during a mini-retrospective of her work at the Fleadh."
The 57-year-old actress, who won an Academy Award for her performance in 1985's "Prizzi's Honor," will be participating in a public interview in the Town Hall Theater on July 12 so audience members can ask her questions.

Here are a few words on Michael Jackson from Diane Fredel-Weis, a Los Angeles-based writer. Diane worked on the marketing for Jackson’s “Captain Eo,” a 3-D sci-fi short featured as an attraction at Disney theme parks. The film was directed by Francis Ford Coppola, produced by George Lucas and starred Jackson alongside Anjelica Huston and Dick Shawn. Diane, who met the late pop star while working on “Eo,” was kind enough to detail some of her experiences for MTV readers.
by Diane Fredel-Weis
When I walked onto the Culver City soundstage of “Captain Eo” in early 1986, it was a thrill on many levels. The sets were mind-blowing. Dark, complex, coiled metal environments. Actors walking around in alien costumes. Dozens of people busy with the production. And of course, the star of the film, Michael Jackson, was there.
I was on an assignment for Walt Disney World marketing to watch

Yes, he was the punchline of approximately a quarter-million Tonight Show jokes. But Michael Jackson's stop-on-a-dime dance moves and sensual soprano have influenced generations of musicians, dancers and entertainers, and the man was so much more than what the tabloids made him out to be. One of entertainment's greatest icons, he was incredibly gifted, and like most gifted individuals he was an equally troubled genius who kept us captivated at his most dazzling, and at his most appalling moments. The New York Times once described him as one of the six most famous people on the planet. I'd like to up the ante: he was the most famous person on the planet. He influenced artists ranging from Justin Timberlake to Madonna, and genres from rock to pop to R&B to even rap. No other artist has been as unifying. Jackson also helped elevate the music video, turning it

This past Thursday, shortly after Michael Jackson’s untimely passing, a sick Internet rumor started that veteran actor Jeff Goldblum had died. His reps were quick to point out that the actor was, in fact, very much alive and well. For any of you doubting Thomases out there, here’s photographic evidence of the actor’s good health, taken just a couple weeks ago:
Of course, as many here in the MTV offices will attest to, Jeff Goldblum is king. He will always be David Cronenberg’s original “Fly” of course, but I love him best for starring alongside a young Laurence Fishburne as a high-class drug dealer in “Deep Cover.” And a designer drug dealer at that. In the honor of the fact that Jeff Goldblum still walks among us, I present to you this little photographic tour through his career.
I’ll admit, my heart skipped a beat

A sad day indeed. Michael Jackson wore many hats over the course of his long career. He was an international superstar, and he leveraged that status to dip his toes into anything that interested him. In the world of film, Jackson enjoyed unparalleled access. He worked with luminaries, artists and auteurs who shaped the course of the medium as strongly as the pop star himself did in the music world.
Jackson was a pop cultural icon and his touch will forever be felt in all facets of entertainment. Here are just a few of the stars he hitched to in film during his long and storied career.
Sidney Lumet is a director’s director. He gave us classics like “12 Angry Men,” “Dog Day Afternoon,” “The Network,” “Serpico” and the modern-day masterpiece “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead.” He also gave us “The Wiz,” a playful recasting of

Michael Jackson's talent as an entertainer was arguably beyond comparison, yet his music was only the starting point for a career that spanned multiple mediums: film, television (including a Jackson 5 cartoon), video games, theme-park attractions and more. While his appearances in films were relatively few and far between, his magnetism translated easily to the big screen.
Jackson's first major film came in 1978, with director Sidney Lumet's "The Wiz." In the musical fantasy, adapted from L. Frank Baum's "The Wizard of Oz," Jackson starred as the Scarecrow alongside Diana Ross' Dorothy, Nipsey Russell's Tinman and Ted Ross' Lion. "The Wiz" is an urban fairy tale set in

The King of Pop is dead. Long live the King of Pop! As I'm too distressed to work, as I'm sure you are too, I thought we could celebrate Michael together with something from his prime: 3-D Disney parks cinematic odyssey Captain Eo -- which, many tend to forget, was one of Francis Ford Coppola's lesser-heralded works. That's Angelica Huston as the licorice-tangled Supreme Leader ordering Eo and his crew to be turned into trash cans, before Michael saves the day by singing "We Are Here To Change The World" and shooting purple lasers out of his wrists. Captain Eo premiered at Epcot September 12, 1986 and had its last public showing at Disneyland Park Paris on August 17, 1998. Goodbye, Michael. There will never be another you. I wish it all had a happier ending.

For no reason whatsoever I have declared today 1984 day! It's a 25th Anniversary Jamboree or some such. (Don't ask questions. Just go with it) Herewith a tripled top ten: What the public liked, what Oscar liked, what I liked from the year that was. All movie title links go to their Netflix page in case you're interested in giving them a looksie. First a little historical entertainment context: Vanessa Williams was not starring on Ugly Betty but resigning her Miss America tiara due to nude photos (the more things change...), Ricky Martin was a new member of Menudo, people were just discovering what Madonna looked like on MTV, and Scarlett Johansson was fresh out of the womb.
What Oscar Liked
The Oscar nominees for Best Picture were the Mozart bio Amadeus (11 noms / 8 wins), the legendary David Lean's swan song A Passage to India (11 noms / 2 wins), Roland Joffé's war

NBC scored some interesting guest stars - Rumer Willis, Anjelica Huston and Balthazar Getty - on Monday's "Medium." Jake Weber and Emmy winner Patricia Arquette star as a husband and wife who deal with Arquette's character Allison's unique Esp visions that help crack troublesome police cases. There may have been rumblings that Lindsay Lohan could leave acting for good, but she's not done quite yet. Variety reports that she's going to star in a new indie fantasy comedy called The Other Side, which has a rather interesting cast list. La Lohan will be joined by: Woody Harrelson, Giovanni Ribisi, Dave Matthews, and Alanis Morissette. I almost feel like I catapulted back to the '90s.
The kicker: This sounds like a cross between Shutter Island and Mister Lonely... So, she'll play a grad student who nabs a summer job working at a science institute on a remote island. There, she comes across an eccentric community (of musicians, one would assume by this roster) who are hiding a big secret about a tragedy that happened years ago. I can only imagine that Dave Matthews went down on Alanis in a theater, driving Harrelson to become a serial killer who kills a discontented,

It's a test screening exclusive. My pal "txt critic" strikes again. He managed to get into a test screening of Wes Anderson's animated film Fantastic Mr. Fox. It happened yesterday here in New York. Here's what he had to say about the movie which is based on the Roald Dahl book. Keep in mind that the movie is still a work in progress.
terrific! like a beautiful union of filmmaker and material. you could sense the love and reverence for the dahl story but he absolutely put his stylistic stamp as a filmmaker all over it, without one overwhelming the other. it Felt like what a wes anderson movie would be if animated. same title/caption font, hip soundtrack (though the only song i specifically remember is "i get around" by the beach boys), slo-mo dance sequence
very dry humor. i dont know if it's really for kids

Twitch asked a great question on Friday that has been dancing around in my head naked all day: which auteur would you like to see handed a huge pile of money ($100 mil') and complete freedom to make whatever the hell kind of picture they wanted to make with it? Our pal Ja answered (always worth a read) and I should, too.
My five.
Jonathan Glazer. Birth and Sexy Beast are both so well directed and imagined with limited budgets. They're also the kind of features that scream 'this director will have trouble getting his films financed!' Imagine how pissed the cinephiles of 2050 are going to be if his feature career ends with Birth, only his second, a movie that will undoubtedly be revered by then.
Terry Gilliam. He makes every list like this... and that's out of more than pity. Even when he doesn't have a lot of money,
