Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden is about to fulfil a high seas dream - by christening a new cruise ship.
The actress will launch the Carnival Cruise Dream Ship on the Hudson River in New York next week and she can't wait for the champagne ceremony.
The excited star tells WENN, "It's a big deal because this is my city, where I grew up, and I get to bash champagne bottles against the ship.
"My dad was a naval captain and got to travel all over the world. He was stationed in Europe for a long stretch and he decided we would come back to America on a cruise. We came back and stopped in Hawaii and it was awesome.
"At that time those cruise ships were like dinosaurs compared to what cruise ships are like today with water slides and spas... It's a great way for families to be together and to bond together. I have been on a cruise with my family and it's beautiful being under the stars on the ocean."
And Harden is particularly pleased to be the "godmother" of the new Carnival Cruise ship - because it's going to be a floating charity boost for St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
She adds, "They're going to raise $3 million for these kids and they also have innovative ideas for families on the ship to take part in games together to raise money. It's great across the board because it raises awareness, it raises money and also families will be having a good time." »

There is nothing inherently wrong with movie and TV stars being big draws on Broadway, necessitating current top ticket prices of 140 bucks or so, along with seats in the mezzanine that are so narrow they make you feel morbidly obese. This is nothing necessarily improper with any of this, because, in the case of, say Yazmina Reza's Tony Award winning drama God of Carnage, a powerful Albee-esque drama starring the brilliant Tony-winning Marcia Gay Harden, along with James Gandolfini, Hope Davis and Jeff Daniels, the $81.50 you spend for a Tuesday night in the nosebleed seats becomes a transcendent theatrical experience at the Bernard Jacobs, with director Matthew Warchus expertly guiding two sets of parents into upper class warfare after one of their children has knocked out the teeth of the other. But as satisfying as God of Carnage is, there... »

We haven't seen anything yet. Or not much of it at least. Particularly when it comes to Oscar's Supporting Actress race. With so many presumed giants on their way whose cast lists tilt female (Nine, The Lovely Bones, Up in the Air, Precious) it's quite possible that not one future Oscar nominee has arrived in theaters yet. That's kind of a shame for those of us who enjoy actresses year round.
If you had a ballot sitting in front of you right now, for example, and the only films that were eligible were films that had already opened (at least on the coasts -- we'll cheat and include next week's Precious) which supporting performances would be on your ballot? The pickings might be arguably slim but I'd probably choose from these ten. Which boxes would you check off?

If you want to break the box office, you get an A-list star - and Broadway's learning that that's as true in theater as it is on the silver screen. With movie stars on the marquees of its plays, Broadway is seeing one of its best fall seasons in recent years, selling $21.1 million from Oct. 12 to 18, according to The New York Times. Both A Steady Rain has grossed over $1 million, thanks to stars Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman. Meanwhile, Shakespeare is hot as never before, with Jude Law raking in $904,914 last week, bringing total box office receipts for Broadway to »

Here's the deal. Whip It, the new Drew Barrymore/Ellen Page film, is tanking at the box office. We have to go see it. If we don't, the money's going to dry up for girl-power films. Not that you won't enjoy every minute. Whip It is the Real Girl movie of the year. Its motto: Be your own hero. The plot: Bliss Cavendar (Page) is a 17-year-old reluctant beauty pageant contestant, nudged along by her Good Girl mother (played by the terrific Marcia Gay Harden). Mom is a former beauty queen herself who sneaks smokes to project a Perfect Mom image to her daughter (and undergoes her own transformation in the film). When Bliss watches an all-female roller derby, she's enthralled. She sneaks off to tryouts and busts into the world of Austin derby. Bliss' team, the Hurl Scouts, is Real Girl heaven: women... »

Polarn O. Pyret
Why should the Swedes have all the fun? For more than 30 years, Polarn O. Pyret (Po.P) has made bold and colorful clothing and outerwear for European babies and kids. But now the company has just launched a U.S. site, allowing us Yankees to enjoy the line’s adorable striped T-shirts, warm fleeces and more.
Tiger Woods — whose wife Elin is from Sweden — dresses his children in the reasonably-priced brand, as does Oscar-winning mama Marcia Gay Harden. The clothes fit up to 11 years old and the line is eco-friendly (they only use 100 percent organic cotton).

Rhianwen Benner: It's a "girl power" flick that's long on entertainment but comes up empty in the empowerment department.
The Lowdown
Ellen Page stars as an underage Texas teenager feeling pressure from her mother (Marcia Gay Harden) to become a beauty queen when a chance trip to a roller derby changes her destiny.
Why You'll Love It
The cast is great. Besides Page, there's Kristen Wiig, Eve, Zoe Bell, Andrew Wilson, and Drew Barrymore, who pulls double duty as director. Everyone gets laughs, particularly Wiig during a monologue describing the origin of her case of crabs (you'll die laughing, until you realize your kids are right there too).
While roller derby isn't all that suspenseful of a sport -- the point of the game, after all, is to skate in circles -- it's definitely fun to watch. Things get rough and tumble, and there are unexpectedly fun moments when the team gets experimental with strategy. »

Coming-of-age stories always retain a certain formula that usually consists of a teen full of angst breaking free from the shackles of expectations. Either placed on them by their parents or society as a whole, the subject usually discovers a passion which is usually not accepted by the film’s oppressors until the end, usually concluding in a tearful moment. The same is true for Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut with Whip It. Though the story, based on the novel Derby Girl by Shauna Cross who also adapted the story for screen, seems awfully generic on paper, it flies across the screen with warmth, genuine authenticity and crushing elbows to the face.
Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) isn’t like all the rest of ‘em. Growing up in the small town of Bodeen, Texas, 17-year-old Bliss is surrounded by grunting jocks and done-up pageant goers, something lost on the porcelain-faced girl. »

Drew Barrymore makes an impressive directorial debut with this coming of age story set in the world of Roller Derby. This is a sports movie for women, by women, starring women. I suspect men will have little trouble enjoying it as well. Adorable Ellen Page (Juno) plays Bliss, a socially awkward teenager from Bodeen, Texas, who is thrust into the world of pageants by her mother (Marcia Gay Harden). One day while shopping in a thrift store, she sees three women skate into the store and leave some fliers about an upcoming Roller Derby.
Intrigued, she recruits her best friend Pash (Alia Shawkat of Arrested Development) to venture into Austin for the event. She is immediately captivated by the sport. She dusts off her old Barbie skates and tries out for the team. After making the team, she becomes an unlikely hero, using her small stature to weave in, out, »

Kristen Stewart has just won the Digital Spy Moive Awards Actress of the Year award. According to Digital Spy, the contest was voter-driven, and Stewart won when "readers voted in huge numbers" for her. DS refers to Stewart's impressive catalog of films as "formidable and eclectic." Very true, Digital Spy, very true. Included in Stewart's "formidable" resume are over a dozen and a half completed films, with The Twilight Saga: Eclipse nearing completion, The Runaways completed, and K-11 on the way. In addition to winning MTV Movie Awards and Teen Choice Awards, Stewart has been nominated for Young Artist Awards a whopping four times, and she has also been nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for her work on Into The Wild (alongside her castmates Emile Hirsch, Marcia Gay Harden, Catherine Keener, and William Hurt, amongst »

Fox Searchlight's new action, comedy, drama, "Whip It," hit theaters this weekend. It featured Drew Barrymore's first work as a director, which she also acted in. It stars : Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Julieete Lewis, Eve, Jimmy Fallon, Daniel Stern, and Drew Barrymore. I would say,not a bad job for Drew Barrymore. I liked the film. It had inspiration, action, drama, and at the end,it just kinda made you feel good. The Movie focused on a girl named Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) who has spent her life sort of just doing what her mom tells her to do. Her life is pretty dull. She works at a small restaurant and enters pageant shows because of her mom. »

Whip It 2009, USA Directed by Drew Barrymore Written by Shauna Cross (also novel) Starring Ellen Page, Alia Shawkat, Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig Whip It is not for me. And I mean that literally: it wasn’t made for me. The producers of the film probably couldn’t care less what a 20-something male thinks of their attempt to market roller derby as a form of tween-age rebellion somewhere between black nail polish and a giving a blowjob to the Raconteurs’ bassist. They’re interested in an age group outgrowing their Jordin Sparks CDs, not film critics pissed off Suicidegirls.com is blocked by the office firewall and looking to ogle some tattoos. But you know what? I liked it anyway. Despite its clumsiness, its cheesiness, and a plot so far beyond formulaic it makes algebra look like chaos theory. Whip It stars Juno’s Ellen Page as Bliss Cavender, »

Director: Drew Barrymore Writer(s): Barry Mendel, Drew Barrymore Starring: Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis, Jimmy Fallon, Daniel Stern Bliss (Ellen Page) is a misfit – at least as far as rural Texas standards are concerned – high schooler. Bliss’ mother (Marcia Gay Harden) wants Bliss to be a beauty pageant queen, just like she was; but when Bliss shows up at a beauty pageant with blue hair, we all know that Bliss doesn’t share her mother’s aspirations. One day, Bliss’ mother takes Bliss to Austin to do some shopping. She reluctantly agrees to buy Bliss a pair of combat boots, until she notices that the boutique also sells bongs. Bliss buys the combat boots with her own cash, and picks up a flyer on the way out…the flyer is for a female roller derby exposition match in Austin. Bliss drags her »

The players: Director: Drew Barrymore, Writer: Shauna Cross, Cast: Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis
Facts of interest: Drew Barrymore's directorial debut.
The plot: Ellen Page plays a Texas teenager who's fed up with beauty pageants and discovers her happiness in roller derby.
Our thoughts: Drew Barrymore celebrates her feature directorial debut with “Whip It,” and the result sure isn’t bad. The film is by no means perfect, but a terrific Ellen Page and a solid supporting cast inject a lot of energy and heart into Shauna Cross’ script, based on her novel about the world of women’s roller derby. »

Zombieland Studio: Columbia Pictures Rated: R for horror violence/gore and language. Starring: Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin Directed by: Ruben Fleischer What it’s about: After the zombie apocalypse, only a few people are left to walk the earth. A young man known as Columbus (because he's trying to get to Columbus, Ohio) teams up with an expert zombie killer named Tallahassee and two grifter sisters to try and find a piece left of humanity... in the form of a Twinkie. What I liked: While I've never been a huge fan of straight-up zombie movies, I have enjoyed this rash of zom coms that have come down the pike, including Shaun of the Dead and Fido. Zombieland does exactly what it needs to... it infuses a healthy dose of fun and silliness with an otherwise distasteful subject matter. Jesse Eisenberg's wit and dry delivery gives us a good main character, and »

Welcome to what is shaping up to being an interesting week at the Reject Report. We have three new movies in Whip It, Zombieland, The Invention of Lying, a 3D re-release in Toy Story, and an expanding release in Capitalism: A Love Story. In the meantime, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is still in theaters making money, but it is starting to sink a bit, and it sure looks as if the defending champ could be duck soup this weekend and fall victim to a concerted attack by the zombies and other things. I might as well begin with Capitalism: A Love Story which rolled out on four screens last weekend and made a per theater average of $60,000!!! Pretty big stuff. It rolls out to 1,000 theaters this weekend and should make a lot more money. Bashing capitalism has been good financially for Michael Moore, and with this movie he takes on the easiest target ever: your »

That Whip It shows Drew Barrymore to be a gifted filmmaker does not come as a surprise. She’s been around Hollywood her whole life and, given her lineage, movies run deep in her blood. One could reasonably assume she’d pick up enough from one of her countless collaborations with gifted directors, or conversations with relatives, to ably make the transition. However, successfully directing a movie is one thing. Making a picture so full of energy, one that expertly blends bone crunching sports scenes with an earnest look at a chic counterculture and an honest depiction of a mother-daughter relationship? That’s something else entirely. And that’s exactly what Barrymore’s done in her raucous tribute to following your heart and finding your niche, a classically constructed coming of age story that fully embraces its girl power attitude. Neither groundbreaking in content or construction, the film contentedly offers recognizable characters, trades »

Directed by: Drew Barrymore
Cast: Ellen Page, Kristen Wiig, Alia Shawkat, Marcia Gay Harden, Daniel Stern
Running Time: 1 hr 51 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: October 2, 2009
Plot: Bliss (Page) wants more out of her small town life than the beauty pageants her mother pushes her toward. Bliss jumps at her chance to join the roller derby team, but then must live a double life so her parents don’t find out.
Who’S It For? Ladies who are sick of men getting all the roles in sports movies. Anyone who believes Page could be one of the best young actors working today.
Expectations: I like everyone involved in this film and I can harken back to a time when I used to watch roller derby on the USA network (I think) when I was a wee lad. It’s a great topic for the flick, so I was pumped. »

We bought (and played) into the Whip It hype from the moment Drew Barrymore secured the rights to produce and direct Shauna Cross' young adult novel, Derby Girl. The female-directed, female-scripted, predominantly female-acted film opens in the theaters today, and after catching the sneak peek last weekend I can confidently tell you that with Whip It, Barrymore didn't make any promises she couldn't keep.
Whip It is a smash-and-bash, coming-of-age fairytale that is thoroughly predictable in every way, yet still manages to come off fresh. Maybe it's the infusion of rollicking feminist sentiment, or the girl-heavy soundtrack that swings easily between Tilly and the Wall and Dolly Parton. Or maybe it just feels good to occasionally watch someone get elbowed in the face on purpose.
For those of you who need a refresher: Whip It follows Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) as she lies about her age and goes against »
