Mary

17 October 2008 8:16 AM, PDT | From NYPost.com | See recent New York Post news

'Mary" is a mess. An inter esting one, yet still a mess. But that's to be expected from its director, the erratic Abel Ferrara ("Bad Lieutenant," "King of New York," et al.).

The cast is noteworthy: Juliette Binoche plays both Mary Magdalene and an actress playing Mm in a movie called "This Is My Blood Matthew Modine plays the director of "Blood" and the actor portraying Jesus in it. There's also Forest Whitaker as a Charlie Rose-style TV host, and

Casting Bites: Gugino, Harris, and Dam-bi

13 October 2008 4:15 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

From one sexy role to another: Carla Gugino will soon (hopefully) be on the big screen as Sally Jupiter, hero and pin-up girl of Watchmen, and now she's taking on another seductive role. Variety reports the gal will be the last point in the romantic love triangle called Every Day, which got cooking earlier this month. Liev Schreiber plays a guy who writes for a "semi-pornographic TV show" (that wasn't in the earlier news release!) that gets propositioned by his colleague (Gugino). But the man already has wife Helen Hunt at home, and this "strains his marriage to the breaking point." Could you resist if Gugino was tempting you?

Meanwhile, we've got Rachael Harris, who stood her own against mockumentary heavyweights in For Your Consideration (she played Mary Pat Hooligan, the actress who played the lesbian coming out to her family in Home for Purim). Variety reports that she's going

Ellen and Portia Party to Spread Awareness for Animals

29 September 2008 2:00 PM, PDT | From Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news

Last week, Ellen DeGeneres used her blog to speak out against CA Proposition 8, but last night she switched gears to host a party with Portia de Rossi in support of Prop 2. Tobey Maguire, Jared Leto and Amy Smart were just a few of the celebs that came out to support the Proposition regarding treatment of farm animals. Ellen's doing her part to stay politically active before the elections in November, but she's also been enjoying her life as a newlywed. Ellen and Portia seem blissfully in love as ever, and hopefully these ladies will still be smiling no matter what happens come election day. To see more photos from the party, including Heather Graham, Olivia Wilde, and Amber Tamblyn, just read more. List: The 10 Most Slanderous Cinematic Slights*

28 July 2008 7:59 AM, PDT | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

By Stephen Saito

Usually when an actor or filmmaker reveals who inspired them in their creation of a character, it's the type of politically correct answer sure to offend no one. Johnny Depp had no problem explaining how he channeled Keith Richards for his role as Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean"; Dustin Hoffman sent up his pal, producer Robert Evans, in "Wag the Dog." But in a business where backbiting is common and screenwriters are urged to "write what you know," it's been a longstanding tradition to say the cruelest things about others under the guise of art. In a summer that will have Tom Cruise applying his considerable cackle to a Sumner Redstone surrogate in "Tropic Thunder" and a manscaping-derelict Bruce Willis doing his meanest Alec Baldwin impression in the adaptation of producer Art Linson's Hollywood tell-all, "What Just Happened?", we thought it was high time

Among this week's offerings: The pregnancy comedy goes pre-natal, the fate of all the jungle rests in the hands of the world's most lethargic endangered species, and Dario Argento has a new film, rendering the rest of this list mostly unnecessary.

"Dreams With Sharp Teeth"

Author Harlan Ellison is widely regarded as one of the finest writers of the 20th century. He is also, as this documentary readily highlights, abrasive, petulant, egotistical and prone to fits of belligerent rage. Collecting together more than two decades worth of footage and interviews, "Grizzly Man" producer Erik Nelson lifts the dust jacket off one of literature's genuinely larger than life characters and a man who has filed more lawsuits than the Aclu, proving that sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction, even Ellison's sci-fi tales.

Opens in New York.

Downey Jr missed out on Graham date

15 April 2008 4:51 AM, PDT | From Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news

Robert Downey Jr had no idea that Heather Graham wanted to date him after they played lovers in a movie.

The actor revealed that he felt so uncomfortable filming sex scenes in 1998 film Two Girls and a Guy that he failed to pick up on her interest in him.

Contactmusic quotes him as saying: "We're doing this scene, and she's basically masturbating me, and I'm giving her oral sex for the better part of two or three hours. Here's what I thought: 'I'm really hot and bothered. I hope she's not uncomfortable. Oh well, the day's . . .

Downey Jr. Missed Out On Graham Romance

14 April 2008 12:10 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Robert Downey Jr. missed out on the chance to date Heather Graham for real after they starred as onscreen lovers - because he felt so awkward during sex scenes, he missed the chemistry between them.

The pair had to get naked and perform sex acts on each other in the 1998 film Two Girls and a Guy - which Downey Jr found embarrassing. He was later shocked to discover Graham wanted to take their relationship further.

He says, "We're doing this scene, and she's basically masturbating me, and I'm giving her oral sex for the better part of two or three hours. Here's what I thought: 'I'm really hot and bothered. I hope she's not uncomfortable. Oh well, the days over.'

"And then I ran into her a year later, and she was like, 'Why didn't you just call me?' It was like a Woody Allen moment.

Despite the missed opportunity - Downey Jr. insists he's glad nothing happened: "It was fantastic, but to tell you the truth, I am more likely to want to work with Heather Graham now I am happily married, than if she and I had gone and done something seedy."

Heath Ledger Dead at 28

23 January 2008 | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Movie star Heath Ledger has been found dead in his Manhattan, New York apartment. The actor was declared dead by medics at his Broome Street, SoHo home at 3:30pm on Tuesday, according to the New York Police Department. A police spokesperson reveals Ledger was discovered by his housekeeper, after he failed to answer the door to a masseuse he had booked to give him a massage. While prescription drugs were found at scene, there were no illegal drugs discovered. The Australian Brokeback Mountain star, 28, was just about to start promoting the Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight, in which he plays movie villain The Joker. Born in Perth in 1979, Ledger made a name for himself in a series of brooding roles on the big screen; he was nominated for a 2006 Oscar for his portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in the gay-themed drama Brokeback Mountain. Fiercely private, Ledger has openly spoken about his public shyness, but he hit the headlines for romances with Heather Graham, Naomi Watts and his Brokeback Mountain co-star Michelle Williams, the mother of his two-year-old daughter Matilda Rose.

A star field hockey player and athlete, Ledger turned his attentions to drama in his teens and, when a friend headed to Sydney, Australia to chase an acting dream, the star-to-be went along for the ride. He landed a break as a gay cyclist in 1996's Sweat - a TV drama about a group of Olympic hopefuls - and then he portrayed the best friend of a rapist in low-budget 1997 movie Blackrock. Hedger left Australia to find acting work in America in 1999 and landed the lead in Aussie director Gregor Jordan's crime thriller Two Hands. That film helped him land the lead hunk role in teen movie hit Ten Things I Hate About You. He went on to play Mel Gibson's son in The Patriot and Billy Bob Thornton's troubled offspring in Monster's Ball. Both roles earned Ledger high praise from critics. But then came a string of critical flops - A Knight's Tale, Ned Kelly, The Four Feathers, The Order, Lords Of Dogtown, and The Brothers Grimm. But then followed Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain in 2005, which Ledger has often described as a major turning point in his professional and personal life. As awkward cowboy Ennis Del Mar, Ledger regained his position as one of Hollywood's top stars. The role led to a Best Actor Oscar nod and the coveted role of The Joker in the upcoming The Dark Knight, for which he's already receiving great acclaim. Ledger has also won acclaim for his role as Robbie Clark in quirky Bob Dylan-inspired movie I'm Not There. The tragic star was last seen publicly on the London set of director Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus on Saturday.
