On top of the titles listed below I also watch the Criterion Blu-ray for Howards End and the Blu-ray for Warner Home Video's North By Northwest, both of which will be reviewed on Tuesday along with the Criterion Blu-ray for Wings of Desire. On top of that I watched the Blu-ray for Disney/Pixar's Up, which will be reviewed in a couple of weeks along with the Blu-ray versions of Monsters, Inc. and Cars.
As for the titles listed below, the first three are the final three of Sony's November 3 release of Film Noir Collection Volume One after I discussed my thoughts on The Sniper and 5 Against the House last week. You can get more details on the complete set right here and a link to buy the set is included with all three films below. As a quick note, the only one of the five I didn't particularly »

More good news for my favorite film genre! Back in May, I attended and wrote about the great “I Wake Up Dreaming” noir film festival at San Francisco’s Roxie Theater, hosted by Elliot Lavine. Showcasing old and rare B-movies from the 30s to the 50s, the festival was so successful that it was extended for another week.
Consider this a further extension two changing seasons later, as starting this Thursday Mr. Lavine will once again bring 22 rare noir gems to the Roxie for two weeks of betrayals, knife-sharp suspense and treacherous women.
This time around, the films are newly restored 35mm archive prints from Columbia Pictures—directed by acclaimed directors like Nicholas Ray, Fritz Lang, Samuel Fuller, Don Siegel, and king of gimmicks William Castle. As with “I Wake Up Dreaming,” the films are shown as double features: two films for $11.
This collection offers a couple of noir-horror hybrid, »

There are several yearly television events that I really love. Watching Miracle on 34th St. on eighteen different channels at the same time in December. Watching Groundhog Day... well, you know. Watching A Christmas Story for 24 straight hours on TBS (see below). There are a lot of these television traditions around my house, as you might guess, but none of them quite blows the doors off the whole television theory like August on TCM. This will be the seventh year of Summer Under the Stars, and it is an absolutely amazing trip through classic cinema. Best of all, the films are uncut and commercial free. Just to have Glenn Ford day (August 7th) is a treat, and while Ida Lupino (August 27th) might not be the name everyone gravitates immediately toward, but man is that a schedule. »

We've all used the expression "they just don't make 'em like they used to," but in the case of Happy Birthday to Me, it's more than just a cliche. And now that the film is being re-released with the full restored score, we can hear it just like it was intended to sound.
Bo Harwood and Lance Rubin composed the film’s haunting orchestral score. Happy Birthday to Me was directed by Academy Award® nominee J. Lee Thompson (The Guns of Navarone, 10 to Midnight, Murphy’s Law) and stars Emmy Award® nominee Melissa Sue Anderson (“Little House on the Prairie,” “Midnight Offerings”) and Golden Globe Award® winner and Hollywood legend Glenn Ford (3:10 to Yuma, Blackboard Jungle, The Big Heat, Superman), along with such familiar co-stars as Lawrence Dane (Scanners, Of Unknown Origin, Bride of Chucky), Daytime Emmy Award® winner Tracy Bregman (“The Bold and the Beautiful,” “The Young and »

Clifton Collins Jr. talks Boondock Saints 2, Extract, directing music videos and much more
A few days ago, I mentioned on my Facebook page that I was extremely excited to be interviewing a favorite actor of mine, Clifton Collins Jr. I was also rather dismayed that there were many friendo's of mine out there who didn't know who he was, by name anyway. Some would recognize him when I mentioned he was the homosexual hitman in the critically-acclaimed film Traffic, or the crazy drug dealer in the equally-underrated The Rules Of Attraction (which is one of my favorite performances of his), some recognize him as the confused killer Perry Smith in Capote, a performance that some think is just as Oscar-worthy as Phillip Seymour Hoffman's Oscar-winning portrayal of Truman Capote. Oh yeah, and, of course, there were those who just recently saw him on the silver screen as Ayel, the »

Well, kids, it looks like we have yet another flick to add to the remake pile and, as is occurring more and more these days, it's gonna be in *surprise* 3D!
According to a report from Bloody-Disgusting, the 1981 Canadian slasher that starred Glenn Ford and Melissa Sue Anderson is being eyed for the redux treatment.
If it's been a while since you saw the original Hbtm, here's a brief synopsis: A number of teenagers from an elite prep school get into mischievous sexual situations fueled by alcohol and pot smoking. As teens start to disappear, murdered in a variety of violent ways, the film suggests a number of suspects. Is the killer the troubled girl (Anderson) who lost her overbearing, social-climbing mother in a car accident that she survived? Or is it the stern school mistress; the wacky, cool social clown; the social misfit; or none of the above? The »

The B Noir festival is a hit! It's always a delight to hear about retrospective programming doing well. There are still people out there interested in and trying out old movies in theaters. Or maybe the San Francisco noir crowd is just that strong. I'd written about "I Wake Up Dreaming" a couple of weeks back (read it here); I have since went and saw some of the movies they're playing.
If you're in the Bay Area and you haven't spared the time, there's good news. The festival was supposed to end this Thursday, but I have just been informed that since it is selling out so well, they've decided to add another week of showings!
The list of extra screenings is at the bottom, but before that, I want to recommend trying to get to this Friday's showing of The Devil Thumbs a Ride, which I managed to catch on the fest's opening night. »

Few composers have such a long past in network television music as Dick DeBenedictis. A native of New Milford, New Jersey, DeBenedictis never saw himself as a film composer right up until his first commission! He was thrown into the deep end so to speak... Over four decades he provided music for classic episodes of Columbo, Matlock, Father Dowling, Diagnosis Murder and tons of other series' which may not be as well known today. This was all written in addition to a rich background in writing for musical theatre, another major forte of the composer. In my interview with Dick DeBenedictis, we revisit all these shows with a special focus on select episodes of Columbo where Dick had to write music for murderous musicians!
How did your fascination with music begin?
I began piano lessons at the age of ten or eleven, then I attended Ithaca College. I got a »

The finest American Westerns have a characteristic that "3:10 to Yuma" shares. The story may be simple, but only in the way that parables are simple.
Beneath the surface, there are larger issues being explored that cut to the essence of life - the struggle to survive, the struggle to maintain integrity, the nature of good and evil, and the things of value that can be passed from father to son.
In "3:10 to Yuma" director James Mangold has made himself a grand Western. A remake of the 1957 Glenn Ford and Van Heflin film, which was based on Elmore Leonard's short story, the new film lacks the self-conscious modernism of most Westerns like "Unforgiven". The modern influences are there, in its harsh language and realistic violence, but there's no sense of straining for effect. It just tells a story and, seemingly incidentally - though no movie can be this »
