The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Review

15 October 2009 2:29 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

I had a friend who had done some jail time. I was always very curious about this because I knew that it would be hugely unlikely I would ever see the inside of a cell (knock on wood). He told that one of the most beloved movies by prisoners was Wizard of Oz. This made all the sense in the world. Wizard of Oz is the ultimate escapist fantasy, which betrays the film’s original message. My thoughts after the jump.

Ironically, what people remember most is the vivid Technicolor of Oz more than the sepia toned world of Kansas. We love our family, but the imagination is stirred by everything that happens when not at home, when not in a safe place. And yet that simple message that there is no place like home, that desire to return to one’s family is pretty profound in the movie. Wizard of Oz, »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Wizard of Oz’ Given Release Befitting a Classic

12 October 2009 7:57 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The Warner Brothers Blu-Ray release to mark the 70th anniversary of the beloved “The Wizard of Oz” is perhaps the most exhaustive and complete “Collector’s Edition” release to date. Warner Brothers, a studio that knows how to treat their classics, releasing gigantic sets for “Blade Runner” and “Casablanca” in recent years and with another for “Gone With the Wind” coming soon, has done it again, and arguably better than ever.

Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0

As for the film itself, what more could possibly be written about “The Wizard of Oz”? By some standards, it’s the most watched movie in world history, a film that has transcended its genre to simply become a part of the history of the planet. Have you ever heard someone criticize or complain about “The Wizard of Oz”? Me either.

The Wizard Of Oz – 70th Anniversary 2-Disc Special Edition

28 September 2009 1:18 PM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Hitting shelves tomorrow, The Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary DVD Editions are amazing treatments for the classic film. Newly remastered and filled with bonuses, the DVD releases are absolute must-owns. The Blu-Ray release is obviously the clear winner here, but this is a great example of not skimping for those who haven't made that upgrade yet. The 2-disc edition gives you a treasure trove of bonuses, and a brilliant-looking version of the film that gives you the advantages of the 8K resolution scan remastering, which results in an instantly noticeable improvement over previous DVD releases. The 2-disc includes - Disc 1 Remastered feature with Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio (New) Sing-along Track (New) Commentary by John Fricke with Barbara Freed-Saltzman (daughter of Arthur Freed), Margaret Hamilton, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, John Lahr (son of Bert Lahr), Jane Lahr (daughter of Bert Lahr), Hamilton Meserve (son of Margaret Hamilton), Dona Massin (MGM choreographer), William Tuttle (make-up artist), Buddy Ebsen, »

The Beverly Hillbillies: What Happened in the Last Episode "Jethro Returns"

27 September 2009 2:17 AM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

In 1962, a truly strange TV show hit the airwaves, The Beverly Hillbillies. The sitcom revolves around a poor mountaineer, Jed Clampett (Buddy Ebsen), who discovers oil on his backwoods property. Now a multi-millionaire, he's encouraged to move to Beverly Hills with his spunky mother-in-law, "Granny" (Irene Ryan), beautiful daughter Elly May (Donna Douglas), and dim-witted nephew Jethro (Max Baer). They try to understand their strange new surroundings and are aided by selfish banker Milburn Drysdale (Raymond Bailey) and his bookish secretary, Miss Jane Hathaway (Nancy Kulp).

It may be hard to imagine it now but in its day, The Beverly Hillbillies was a massive hit. Though hated by most critics, several episodes of the series are among the most-watched TV episodes in history, having drawn as much as 44% of the viewing households. A 1964 episode titled "The Giant Jackrabbit" is still the most-watched half-hour program »

Reading Rainbow: Why Is the Cancelled Show Leaving the Airwaves after 26 Years?

29 August 2009 12:57 PM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

At least for now, it looks like the story of PBS' venerable Reading Rainbow has ended. For the first time in 26 years, young viewers won't find the show on their television sets.

Hosted by LeVar Burton, Reading Rainbow first debuted in 1983 and was designed to inspire a love of books among young viewers. Each episode revolves around a single theme and children are exposed to books that they can read for more information. In later years, the program highlighted tough issues like poverty, prison, and the September 11 attacks.

A regular feature of the show is a celebrity reading a full story. Over Reading Rainbow's 155 episode run, the diverse group of readers have included Julia Child, Bill Cosby, Buddy Ebsen, Peter Falk, Jim Henson (as Kermit the Frog), Jane Pauley, Lou Rawls, and Patrick Stewart.

Review: 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' Centennial Collection

13 January 2009 12:29 PM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Paramount Home Video concludes their Audrey Hepburn review with the fifth entry in their Centennial Collection, the classic Breakfast At Tiffany's, on sale today.  It’s interesting that they’re celebrating a century but the first five releases are all from the same era, the 1950s and while this was released in 1961, still has that same look and feel.

The film has withstood the test of time very nicely given the loving touch of director Blake Edwards who oversaw this adaptation of Truman Capote’s novella and made it uniquely his own.  In the prose, Holly Golightly never sang “Moon River” nor did she really have a happy ending.  Characters differ between story and screenplay and by now, most people know Capote always envisioned Marilyn Monroe in the lead. He was crushed when Hepburn was cast.

While Monroe would have been good in many ways, this was all about style and elegance, »

Breakfast at Tiffany’s: Centennial Collection – 2-Disc

7 January 2009 10:38 AM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

DVD Review Breakfast at Tiffany’s: Centennial Collection – 2-Disc Directed by: Blake Edwards Cast: Audrey Hepburn, George Peppard, Mickey Rooney, Buddy Ebsen Running Time: 1 hr. 55 mins Rating: Not Rated Due out: 1/13/2009 Plot: Based on Truman Capote’s book, Holly Golightly (Hepburn) is a New York socialite who is getting by on her charm and looks. Along comes Paul (Peppard) as a struggling writer. Her goal is to marry a millionaire, his is to get back to writing, but Holly is pretty easy to fall for. Who's It For? The easy answer is that this one is for the girls. But pretty much everyone should sit through this film at least once. Movie: Holly is a brilliantly damaged character, especially since it was written over 40 years ago. And it’s great to see Peppard in a non-“A-Team” role »
