DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

Afm Debuts First Photos and Synopses from 6 Upcoming Movies Including Manolete, Mona Lisa, Small Town Saturday Night and The Long Good Friday

12 November 2009 8:18 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

When it comes to the first photos and synopsis from upcoming films, Collider has reaped great rewards from this year’s American Film Market (Afm).  For those who don’t know, Afm is where film buyers from around the world come once a year to buy movies and also pre-buy films in development.  Simply put, this is where a lot of money changes hands in the film industry and it’s where many decisions about what you and I get to see are made.  In an effort to try and raise a film’s profile or attract film buyers, many of the studios distribute full synopses and still images for their movies.

With that in mind, we have grabbed some of those synopses and images for Manolete (starring Adrien Brody and Penelope Cruz), Mona Lisa, PearblossomSmall Town Saturday Night (starring Chris Pine), and The Long Good Friday.  Hit the »

Focus Features Sets 2010 Release Dates for Six Films

12 November 2009 4:04 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The other day we premiered the first images and official synopses from Focus Features Greenberg, The Eagle of the Ninth, and Somewhere.  Now, thanks to Focus sending out a press release, we have an idea when some of them are getting released.

On March 12th, director Noah Baumbach’s Greenberg will hit theaters for a limited release. The film stars Ben Stiller.  After that we’re getting Thomas Balmes Babies on April 16th and director Anton Corbijn’s The American on September. 1st.  That’s the George Clooney assassin film.  Sometime in the third quarter will be Kevin Macdonald’s Roman adventure The Eagle of the Ninth, and in November It’s Kind of a Funny Story gets released.  The big question mark is Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere, which still doesn’t have a release date.

The thing to remember is release dates change all the time, so before you »

After all these years the Boondock Saints sequel is finally coming out. After years of rumors and all the die-hard fan’s heartaches, it’s now actually making it’s way to the big screen. In light of this, here’s what one of the film’s stars Norman Reedus had to say about the original, the sequel and what can be expected.

How was Comic Con?

Norman Reedus: Comic Con was nuts! I mean when we got on stage there was a lot of screaming people and the line for our panel was like a mile long.

Did you know before how die-hard some fans are? There are some insane ones.

Norman Reedus: Yeah, I have had experiences with people coming up to me with tattoos on their arms and some crazy stuff. I knew that we were in for quite a ride.

Yeah, those fans are »

Horror Plus Action: Blade

31 October 2009 1:16 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Happy Halloween everyone! If you’re a regular Screen Rant reader you’ll have noticed (and hopefully read) our Halloween lead-up series called “Horror Plus.” If not, just so you know it’s a feature which sets out to showcase one film that combines horror with another genre. Each instalment will basically serve as a review of the film at hand, explaining why it’s such a good example of genre merging.

So far we’ve had Horror Plus Comedy: Shaun of the Dead, Horror Plus Sci-fi: Alien, Horror Plus Thriller: 28 Days Later and Horror Plus Crime: Se7en. And finally we come to our final installment which is Horror Plus Action.

So which film have we chosen which merges both the genres of horror and action so well? After much deliberation I decided to go with Stephen Norrington’s excellent 1998 comic-book adaptation, Blade, starring Wesley Snipes as the titular vampire killer. »

'The Boondock Saints II': A cult hit gets a second shot

22 October 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

As writer-director Troy Duffy recalls it, the cast and crew of The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day were more than a tad nervous when they began work on their Boston-set, vigilante-action sequel. “Everybody was terrified to be the guy that screwed it up,” he says of the Toronto shoot for his movie, which is released October 30. “They knew the fans would find out where they lived and burn their f—-ing house to the ground." If you've never heard of Troy Duffy or his films you’re not alone. The Boondock Saints, a violent slice of Tarantino-esque Irishsploitation, was »

Scenes We Love: Blade

16 October 2009 4:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

It might seem to be strange to love a scene in a movie that frankly you are not all that attached to. But for today's Scenes We Love, I decided to pick one of my 'bittersweet favorites': the opening from Blade. Now why is it bittersweet? Well, because as much as I love this scene, when it comes to the rest of the movie, I kind of felt like it was all downhill from here. This is just my personal taste, but Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff) was never all that scary as the bad guy in the story, and, well, that chick kind of got on my nerves (hey, just my two cents!). But, I'm going to stand by the fact that despite a heck of an opening, the rest of the movie never quite lived up to this set up. I guess that's the problem with a great entrance »

Halle Berry went sexy in her cutout dress last night for Keep A Child Alive's 6th Annual Black Ball in NYC. She had her best accessory, boyfriend Gabriel, on her arm, as she walked the red carpet alongside Adrian Grenier and pregnant Padma Lakshmi. John Mayer made an appearance solo as rumors about his rekindled romance with Jennifer Aniston circulate, though you guys seem to think their giving it another go is a pretty terrible idea. Today happens to be John's 32nd birthday, so it looks like he got a head start on the celebrating. DVD Playhouse—October 2009

By

Allen Gardner

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner Bros.) A true highlight in digital restoration technology, Warner Bros. restoration of the 1939 classic is cause for celebration. The Technicolor of the late ‘30s looks as though it was shot yesterday, and is especially stunning on Blu-ray, which was produced by scanning each of the film’s original Technicolor camera negatives using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final “capture” master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film’s previous DVD release. Judy Garland’s Dorothy is charming as ever, and the entire cast: Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch, are all stellar. Four disc set bonuses include: Sing-along track; Documentaries and featurettes; Two 1914 silent films produced by Oz author L. Frank Baum, based on his stories »

[DVD Review] The Gate: Monstrous Special Edition

6 October 2009 2:26 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Oh, to be an adolescent in the mid-1980s. I was only learning to walk at the time, but if nostalgia for something I really wasn’t present for (I’m looking at you, my entire generation) and movies I didn’t see in their original release have taught me anything, it’s that there has never been any finer time to be alive. Nearly all actions were accompanied by a score that sounds as if it’s coming out of a midi file, completely ridiculous pieces of logic go totally unscathed, and you could frequently find yourself battling monsters and demons for no other reason than that they were there (and defeat them; don’t forget that part). With all of that being the case, one would think that The Gate would be awesome, but it’s not. It takes pretty much all of the aforementioned elements and tries »
