I root for Michael Mann even when he missteps, because he is one of America’s premier filmmakers, and one of the great visionaries of cinema. And, really, he’s only been building up steam. TV seemed to occupy him in the 80’s (even with three efforts, the best being Manhunter), but it wasn’t until 1995 that he really struck gold with Heat, and followed that up with The Insider. Both of which qualify as two of the best films of the 90’s. Since then it’s been a film every two or three years, and though none have been as great as those two, they run from the interesting to awesome. Public Enemies falls more into the interesting than awesome camp, but it is definitely solid, albeit familiar ground. My review after the jump.

For Those who were frustrated over the absence of the Watchmen Director's Cut in the UK, you can find peace and happiness again on Monday (November 30).
Paramount Home Entertainment is releasing the Watchmen (Two-Disc Director's Cut) (Cert 18, 178 mins) on Blu-ray here at last.
The Director's Cut came out in the USA in July and, having been too impatient to wait, I purchased it from the States a while back and can confirm it plays on UK Blu-ray machines.
But for fans who held on to hope of a release over here, or were nervous of ordering the import, your time has come.
This new cut of Zach Snyder's adaptation of the graphic novels runs 17 minutes longer than the original, complete with extra footage not seen in cinemas.
Travel back in time to a very different vision of the mid-1980s. Relations between America and the Soviet Union are strained, to say the least, »

The leading ladies of The Private Lives of Pippa Lee hit the red carpet in NYC on Saturday evening. Blake Lively didn't address rumors she's going into business with Victoria Beckham as she smiled for the cameras, while her boyfriend Penn Badgley mingled with fellow Gossip Girl actor Chace Crawford behind the scenes. Robin Wright Penn, meanwhile, showed off her new dark hairdo as she posed alongside Julianne Moore and Keanu Reeves. The film's writer and director, Rebecca Miller, brought along her husband Daniel Day-Lewis. He, in turn, was accompanied by a few of his costars in Nine, like Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard. Both films hit the box office in the coming weeks, but it looks like the two casts have nothing but support for each other. View 35 Photos › To see more from the bash, just read more. Too many stars to fit in one frame: Anthony Mackie, Brooke Shields, Jennifer Aniston, David Cross, Liev Schrieber, Naomi Watts, Jeremy Sisto, Emmy Rossum, Julia Stiles, and Gaby Hoffmann are among the cast members taking a curtain call after performing in the 24 Hour Plays. Kevin Mazur/Getty Images. It has been an unusually starry fall on Broadway—Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig in A Steady Rain, Jude Law in Hamlet, and, later this month, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury in A Little Night Music, just to name a few. But rarely has there been such assemblage of big names on one Broadway stage as there was last night at the American Airlines Theater. Among the performers were Jennifer Aniston, David Cross, Billy Crudup, Rosario Dawson, John Krasinski, Ashton Kutcher, Eva Mendes, Demi Moore, Rosie Perez, Sam Rockwell, Liev Schrieber, Brooke Shields, Julia Stiles, Amber Tamblyn, and Naomi Watts. Jason Reitman, Judah Friedlander. From PatrickMcMullan. On Thursday night Travel & Leisure hosted a viewing of Jason Reitman’s new George Clooney–helmed vehicle Up in the Air, believing that the upcoming Oscar contender captured the woes and blessings of travel that the magazine’s readers know so well. Reitman took the stage before the screening, singling out friends in the audience (Juno actress Olivia Thirlby gave a shy wave in response to his boisterous shoutout, while Billy Crudup seemed delighted to remain under the radar) before introducing his two inspirations: father and co-producer Ivan, as well as Walter Kirn, whose novel provided the movie’s basis. After the film, the crowd convened for supper at Rouge Tomate, though the thought-provoking story remained on the minds of many. Kirn was thrilled with the way that Reitman updated the novel that he had written pre-9/11: “I think the book has been »

What follows is my original top ten list of 2000... or rather the revised version I published in 2002. Let's discuss each year of this decade as it winds down! Who's with me?!? It's always interesting to see which films remained at the forefront of our memory and which fade... both for a variety of reasons, quality being only one factor. New comments are in red.
Please note: This list was based on NYC release dates in the year 2000. Some movies are listed as different years at the IMDb based on when they were released in their home country or in La or whatnot.
Runners Up (in descending order): Une Liaisons Pornographique, Nurse Betty, You Can Count On Me, Before Night Falls, Pola X, Chicken Run, American Psycho, Wonder Boys and Billy Elliott Um... What The Hell are some of these movies doing outside the top ten list? You Can Count on Me »

What's happened to all the great movie nudity lately? Billy Crudup started the year off with a bang, so to speak, with his big blue penis in Watchmen, and Marcus Nispel's Friday the 13th reboot featured sweaty sex and generous amounts of naked female flesh, but the summer and fall seasons have been curiosly bereft of talked-about sex scenes or body parts. Jessica Biel's bravely-bared breasts and backside in Powder Blue went direct to video, Hayden Panetierre nonchalantly limited her exposure to 'side boobage' in I Love You, Beth Cooper, and Megan Fox decided to keep her nipples to herself in the proudly feminist relationship drama ('cause it sure wasn't horror) Jennifer's Body.
In my youth, movies educated me about the wonderful diversity of naked bodies. Today, television and the Internet have stolen much of the thunder once claimed exclusively by the theatrical experience. (Case in point: Susan Sarandon's daughter, »

Okay. Ladies and Gentlemen of the media, please! Enough with this David Letterman hoopla already! You know something? I Don't Care! I don't. In fact, I don't even want to know about Dave's indiscretions, just like I didn't want to know about John Edwards' (I still can't believe that dude thought he could be president), or Bill Clinton's, or about that time when Billy Crudup left pregnant Mary Louise Parker for Claire Danes. And I really, really don't want to hear another word about this Jon Gosselin character or if he's back together with the nanny after his fling with the reporter from Ok!, okay? I realize that public figures in the public eye must open their lives to public scrutiny. Tabloid magazines need to sell, and I certainly respect that (hey, I spent a summer... »

Contrary to reports in a certain section of the media, Sharmila Tagore was definitely in her husband Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi's ancestral town Pataudi, in Haryana, last weekend when Julia Roberts was shooting in the same town.Sharmila had said on-record in a taped interview to Subhash K. Jha: 'Tiger and I are here. He dragged us out here in this heat, much to our annoyance. Saif and my two daughters Sabah and Soha are also here for a Mewati Akikah ceremony, which is a traditional Muslim mundan.'However, Sharmila and her family had no intention of meeting Julia Roberts. The clarification by the author follows an agency report quoting Sharmila as being 'furious' over media reports that her family, including Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, spent last weekend at their ancestral palace in Haryana, where Julia Roberts too is staying. She told the agency: 'Nobody from our family went to the Pautadi Palace. »

Celebrities are known for pushing the envelope when it comes to naming their babies — to say the least! Nameberry.com co-founder Linda Rosenkrantz notes that recently some celebrities have been blazing a different trail, however. “One of the latest trends among celebrity parents is the trend away from trendiness,” she notes. “Even though we still see some extreme choices like Bandit and Bronx, more and more celebs seem to be opting for classic, traditional, ‘normal’ names.”
Although it’s possibly a backlash against all the negative publicity provoked by their “kooky” celebrity baby name counterparts, Linda suspects that “a bigger »
